The new Xperia SP is tempting me (video)... - Xperia Z General

I've been waiting for the 1900MHz HSDPA version of the Xperia Z, I'm still waiting patiently, or at least the ZL
...but today I saw THIS http://youtu.be/pgA4YCAIGBI
and boy I must say I love the design
Sort of mixing all the 2012 NXT phones into one:
S's screen res andd transparent bar
P's aluminum body
U's transparent bar with colours
Sola's "floating touch" tech
Looking amazing

Samsung Galaxy S2 over xperia aRc

Hi guys,
Currently m using aRc, can u help me to know the pros n cons of SGS2..
I am planning to buy one!!
Thanks in advance.
sent from Xperia Arc
SGS II has:
faster processors
A LOT BIGGER rom space (ROM space of arc is just unacceptably small)
more RAM
arguably better screen
thinner & lighter
I've had both but sold my Arc.
SGS2 is much faster and smoother in day to day use.
Lack of Ram seems to cripple Arc a little.
Camera is at least as good on SGS but video recorder is much better than Arc.
Codec support on music and videos ostensibly once again better on SGS2.
Screen quality is much more subjective - i actually thought the Arc screen was really good.
Arc has the better design although it feels a bit long and thin compared to the SGS2. The SGS2 feels like it has a much bigger screen?
Build quality wasn't great on my Arc - felt even more plasticky than the Samsung and the battery panel creaked all the time on the Arc. SGS2 feels much more sold.
Hope that helps

It's kind of amazing as to how can you buy say Arc,Desire S & all those single core superphones & than try to compare them with Atrix/Optimus 2x/SGS 2.
All these phones Arc/Desire S{single core is what i meant} are more than a very capable smartphones, can do most of the daily work.
But put them next to any of the dual cores & differences are there.
Why have you gone for Arc when SGS 2 launch was so near?

you are right except 1 point and that is the screen. The colors of the ARC is more realistic and the screen is the best screen for in direct sunlight. No other screen comes close to it.

Dual core is not everything, before the SGS2 comes out. Those dual cores like the LG and Atrix does not prove to be faster. Actually the LG pretty sucks for a dual core phone. Single core phone is faster then the LG and that says alot.
More ram on S2, if you do a lot of browsing on the device like me, you will come to appreciate the extra ram, something that used to piss me right off about my S1!

Display
Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc comes packing a dazzling 4.2-inch scratch-resistant LED-backlit LCD display, capable of excellent colour reproduction, which is hugely responsive. When you add to that mix Sony's Bravia Mobile engine you end up with a truly noteworthy screen, capable of rivalling, or even surpassing, virtually anything on the market – everything, that is, apart from the Samsung Galaxy S II.
The Galaxy S II brings the latest in a long line of amazing Samsung screens to market, in the form of a cutting-edge 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, which not only renders colours faithfully, and offers unsurpassed sunlight legibility, but sucks up about 1/3 as much power as the LCD on the Xperia Arc.
Winner - Samsung Galaxy S II

In regards to the screen size, Galaxy S II offers a slightly bigger screen at 4.3 –inch compared to that of Xperia Arc (4.2-inch). Samsung Super AMOLED display provides excellent sunlight legibility and needs only 1/3 of the power amount used by Xperia’s LCD display.

please dont compare the phones as they are not even in the same level.
Arc is more of an Galaxy 1 line. the difference is they have HDMI support.
hell the galaxy 1 has 2 cameras " at least for us in europe and asia "
the only 2 phones that are close to SGS2 but " dont beat " the SGS2 in terms of performance is the Atrix and Optimus 2x.
I had the Arc, don't have my Galaxy S2 yet, so I can't compare, so take my words with a grain of salt:
The Arc is a very nice looking phone, with a great screen, and it was running very smooth out of the box. But the ROM size was a joke, RAM could have been bigger for a high-end phone released in 2011, and the position of the headphone jack and the camera/lock keys were extremely annoying.
I love the design, but I don't like the form-over-function approach. Furthermore, I didn't find a single unit (not the two I had, not on any picture on the net), that didn't have a raised upper left corner of the screen, what was visible to me even when looking from the front.
It's by no means a bad phone, but the S2 offers much more on paper, and it's the price is only a little higher where I live.
I'll keep an eye on Sony's Dual-Core phones (they'll come sooner or later) though. And as far as I know, Sony even produces AMOLEDs, it would be nice if they'd use it for their phones.
You'll get dual core phones from Sony Ericsson when everyone else have started to produce quad core devices.

I used both and sold S II. The main reasons I sold S II:
1. AMOLED colors are not for me. Looks too fake/retro.
2. Felt too wide. With screens over 4" it's already a pain to reach to the top of the screen. With the width, it's tough on thumb for my medium size hands.
3. Hated Samsung color selection on UI. Or, it could be I liked SE more classy interface.
4. Phone design has no style and looks like a copycat of iPhone.
Good things about SG II
1. In my two days of use SG II seems to perform buttery smooth while Arc starts to lag once you start to install some apps and widgets. Could be related to these apps.
2. Phone ugly and cheap but it atleast feels solid unlike Arc whose battery cover squeaks somewhere in the middle. I had to put a small folded tape in there to fill the gap inside to stop the squeaky feel. What's funny is most of the SE phones always had problems with battery covers :-(
3. Front camera + all the killer specs
Why I kept Arc?
1. Screen colors
2. Gorgeous style (Misty Silver) and phone feels more ergonomic in my hand
3. Almost everyone I showed pick Arc over Samsung. Of course, once I told the specs, SG II started to get selected.
4. I like SE UI. Dialer looks absolutely stunning compared to any other dialer I saw. I wish it had smart dialing feature.
You should seriously give S II a try if you think you can easily sell it. I was fortunate to make over $60 profit on it after using it for couple of days as it's not available easily to buy. If you are happy with the S II design and AMOLED colors, it's an easy choice to make. SE flunked big time with the specs on Arc. It almost feels like X10 came in a different package and Gingerbread.

to each has his own. as hardware design. i like the Arc. and so i did like the xperia. sony has a style in everything they do. thats sony. their user interface is always sleek and high class. i dare to put them in the same level as apple if not higher.
but thats as far as it goes. everything else fall apart. specs wise. the arc is really old generarion. its same level as galaxy 1. and we passed that since the beginning of new year when dual core started showing up . there is no excuse to what sony is doing. they are 6 months late at LEAST in terms of technology. they are not keeping up with other companies.
HTC dual core within this month or next.
LG already out with new core. first in the market
Motorolla since Feb .
Samsung since May with 1.2 dual core.
Apple with Ipad 2.
what are they exactly waiting for. i am not going to get fooled again and buy a device based on its look like how i did with the xperia x10. one is enough. as long as they dont keep up. iam not going to bother.
also. 4.27 is big when 4 is ok ? its .27, its pretty much nothing. plus the phone is super slim. so that makes it up.
and you dont like the colors of SG2 when everyone praised it ? hell ok. even if you didnt. you could have picked the option " Movie " in the backlight option and you would get narutal colors.
again. i am not judgnig you. i just find it odd that you sell the best phone in the market and keeping and old tech one. unless there is another reason like money etc.

That's the mode I used mostly as the colors look way too over saturated in the other two modes. But, like you said, "to each his own". I guess that is why there are so many phones. I happen to prefer Arc screen, style, and UI more than GSII.
All, thanks for ur comments..
To be very frank I never like samsumg phones. I knew that SG2 is just around the corner but still I gonne for aRc..
Arc has got class, it has best UI (other phones UI almost looks same n ugly)
I am Ok with single core atleast for a year, the only annoying thing is INTERNAL MEMORY...

Can't believe nobody's mentioned it here, but I originally chose the Arc for the camera and design. Come to find out the camera was a lot of hype and the design was pretty much ruined by the fact that it felt plasticky and I constantly had to clean it from finger prints.
Finally got fed up when the creaking back component showed up on mine. But the fingerprint issue is just awful on the Arc. Can't speak for the SGSII as I haven't got mine yet, but I returned the Arc within a week.

I was not going to bring up the creaking and weird way it felt in the hands just so that we can come back and read the complaints when people buy it. I don't or did own an Arc but one of my friends did, went through 3 of them in fact. They all creaked and the battery cover was weird so he eventually give up and got a refund.

I found it the other way around.. SGS II display is a bit dark, but maybe that's all the video camera's fault too.
Yeah I thought the GS2 looked very blue when they were both displaying a white background.

No it look like that on the camera. i also had that when making a movie of the screen between lcd and amoled. Amoled looked always better but in reality they where the same. and sometime the arc screen was better (playing movie).
so don't be mislead with what you see on camera

I had both phones and the main reason I stayed with Arc is because of display. GS2 colors are way-off from reality. Darks look very dark. For example, my contacts photo looked terrible when they had shadows on their face while on Arc, they looked like they looked on my PC LCD Monitor.
Arc color with Bravia Engine looks very natural where SG2 looks very artificial. I like Arc's display the most.
speed aside, arc wins over sgs2 hands down and the stock home launcher is actually the prettiest-looking among other manufacturer IMO
The speed difference is NOTHING for real usage.
In reverse Samsung looks like cheap **** and Arc looks like a masterpiece.
It's design is real. Samsung is just disgusting. The same with UI.
(My opinions).
And one very important thing:
Arc may be tad slower sometimes but do you see HOW MUCH LAG SGSII has EACH time coming back to homescreen?! Outrageous considering it's DOUBLE POWER.
And besides that SGSII has some serious flaws like NO multiple email delete (!!!).
Those things are "kindly" omitted BTW in Eldars review proving again that he's manipulator and cheater.
C'mon guys. Double core will be something next year. Now it's just a gimmick.
OK, go look at 1st video:
- at 6:20 :
See how well-lit the left wall and the ground on SE Arc, while GS II display really dark color
- at 6:29 :
The surrounding around 2 pillars are still well-lit on SE arc, not so much in GS II
- Rotating planet at 6:35:
SE arc shows a nice blue space on the background, while in SGS II, it's darker. You can also see the total-roundness of the orange planet, while in SGS II you don't see it.
From the video, that's what I noticed in display.
EDIT:
Although at 6:44, the rotating DNA animation, the blue displayed in Arc is a bit more cyan-ish, while in SGS II display a deep blue. Which one is the correct one? idk.
Im still happy with the arc i dont give a crap!

You talk about Eldar?
arc just beats the crap out of galaxy s2.. sony is sony.. sony means style, sony means design.. no one can reach up to it.. s2 is nothing but a big brick..
arc nails in terms of design and style.. performence is just behind a fraction of seconds.. who cares about that.. if that little fraction of second is what the advantage of a dual core device.. then **** it..
i still have an x10.. and after using it.. all other phones just look crap.. styleless.. if thats a word..lol

Next Xperia Phone?? Xperia S or ION

Hi Guys,
What will be your next choice of phone, is it Xperia S or Xperia ION or some OTHER phone.
Please VOTE & provide the reason for choosing S / ION / OTHER
to be honest design wise, the pure white arc S still looks better than any of those
but if i were to choose, i prefer the xperia ion
always been a fan of big screen phone's, and better design compared to xperia S
Others
The new Sony phones look worse than Arc, no sd slot and my Arc is just 6.5 months old.
Gonna buy a newer Sony phone or change brands (HTC or Samsung).

I might go for Xperia S when it comes to our country. I don't care how it looks like outside ... It's the hardware which I care the most
Sony Xperia™ ION
But only bad is that is for US market only, what i know
Other. Both look awefull, a little bit like the old X10 wich i hate. I Like the look of my Xperia Play very much, if they bring a second one with the specs of the Ion/S and real analogsticks and a good design i am definetly going to get it.
I'd also buy the Xperia Ion, but it's only for US market, so I'll buy the Xperia S.
I'm using SE for over 7 years now, nothing could change it in the future.

Xperia S, theres always something I liked about it when it first leaked out. Would never go for sumsung or htc worst phones ever tbh. They feal so rubish in the hand especially samsung.
Yes other manufacturers suck for me too especially in design and UI aesthetics.
Let's just keep fingers for NO collapses like Xperia X2 problems SE served to us.
I can say these are one of the few really interesting devices on the market.
Its still not in market, i hope Sony will release their phones before Barcelona event in Feb...samsung galaxy III is expected soon !!!

obviously the Xperia S in pure white oO the hardware is impressive.. and the design doesn't suck that much imo. although it's not as precious as the arc..

GN Multimedia - Xperia Arc
Since I got my X10, the "Sony Ericsson Era" began for me
and even though I have come to realise that SE doesn't focus on hardware
but is more about the looks, I am OK with it because no matter which beast-hardwared phones I've held in my hands and played around with (HTC, Samsung), after all is said and done, I want to wake up next to a gorgeous device.
I think I'll go for the white Xperia S when I get bored of my Arc S.
I really liked Xperia S design, and I live in Brazil, so it's better for me.

Why I chose Sony

My main reasons were the beautiful physical design on the phone but more importantly the software and UX. But recently Punit Soni, Software Product Management at Motorola, went over Motorola’s tenets when it comes to software development on Android and two of them ironically enough described why I like Sony, even though he was talking about Motorola phones. Here's the 2 that stood out:
1. Ensure that we build on a foundation of pure Android
MotoBlur’s long gone. Expect the user interface on all new Motorola Android devices to look and feel like “stock” Android - not far off from a Nexus or a Google Play edition device. Motorola doesn’t want to take over the Android interface.
2. Build experiences that compliment Android and Google services, not compete with them.
I realized after reading this that this is more or less the same direction Sony has chosen to take as well. Good for them! :good:
Why I chose Z1 (Sony)
- Most premium feeling smartphone in my opinion:
The 1 piece aluminum body with glass on front and back looks and feels so premium, also a slightly heavier weighing phone is a big addition to me in this department. I don't like very light phones.
- Sony firmware:
By far the most beautiful UI. Sony theming is really beautiful, the media apps upto settings, home launcher etc everything just fits. It makes vanilla android look boring to be honest.
- Long software support:
Sony doesn't abandons support for phones too fast nowadays, it's great to see how T , TX, V will still receive 4.3 and get a lot of new features.
- Updates which introduce something new every time:
When you receive a major update from Sony (4.2 to 4.3 for example) they always introduce some nice and new features. Most of them aren't even gimmicks like Samsung for example.
- less devs so more fun and challenges for me and other devs

Why I chose Sony...
1. Build Quality
2. Screen ( I actually love it and the viewing angles don't bother Me)
3. Connectivity with the Sony eco system
4. Software. I love their UI
I came from HTC (which I loved) and before that Samsung (which I hated)... And now with Sony I've never been happier!
Sent from my C6916 using xda app-developers app
Why I chose Sony?
1. The Sony convergence. From Bravia, to Cybershot, Walkman, to Playstation, all of the Sony's in-house technologies in the power of one.
2. Build quality. Although I was bothered on my Xperia Arc days when there are a lot of paint chippings on my silver cover,
3. Sony's Android development. Every Android iteration from Sony introduces new (but helpful) features. From ICS (Album, Walkman and Movies integration), to Jelly Bean 4.1 (although Small Apps were introduced post-ICS days of T,TX and V), to 4.2 (new lockscreen and ecosystem), to 4.3 (Xperia themes and Xperia camera),
4. Last but not the least, I started with a Sony Ericsson T68i way back 2003, and I will end (not hopefully the soonest) with Sony
Why I choose Sony?
I don't know. I didn't figure it out yet. I think something is wrong with me!
I love Sony phones. Back 5-6 years ago, we all used Sony Ericsson phones. Everybody was telling me that they have the best camera. My girlfriend still have her Sony Ericsson k800i phone that had the best camera back then. Of course, with Xenon flash!
I chose Sony mobile phones for the main reason that I love the great and unique design. The software interface is also better looking (for me), than the stock Android interface.
For me, right now, Z1 have the best design that I've seen. We'll see in future.
Thanks!

Agree with you. The reasons why I recently switched from a Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900) to the Sony Xperia Z1 (C6903) are:
Sony's device build quality starting from the Xperia Z are outstanding next only to the iPhone and Nokia Lumia designs
The device designs are not generic and cheap looking
The Sony Software UX is overall pretty good and WAY better than all other manufacturers especially Samsung and their Touchwiz UX. HTC is at par with Sony in Android Land
Plus, Samsung's recent region locking stupidity really tilted the odds against it. And, the nerve of these people to ask for close to US$ 70-80 for removing the lock and the device goes out of warranty once it is done. WTF? I bought the device and it's not subsidised by any carrier and I travel to different regions!!!! None of this is applicable to other manufacturers.
So, I guess the current best in terms of specs, handling and design and UX in android land is definitely the Xperia Z1. Followed by Z Ultra and HTC One (if we discount the Snapdragon 600).
Proud owner of Xperia Z1!
Camera, design and Software.
Camera - the best camera on any Android Smartphone if you give it a try.
Design - It's just beautiful
Software - No software gimmicks. Media apps are just awesome.
Well, I had to choose Sony since I lost my Galaxy Note 3 yesterday, and the Xperia Z1 was the best camera phone available (and it was cheap second-hand). Just bought it a few hours back, and I quite like the software's looks and performance. I hate the display though, it's so much behind compared to other flagships (viewing angles do matter to me, and Sony's displays just go bad in an instant at even small angles, I also don't like Sony isn't using Gorilla Glass), though it does look good when viewed straight. The camera isn't exactly great either (the Note 3's 13MP photos were better in that there was lots of detail in outdoor photos and very little to no noise) but it's certainly there at the top.
Hoping to stick it out with the Xperia Z1 for the months to come, let's see how it goes (I do love that Sony gives long support for updates, though I hope KitKat will come soon as it has on the competition's devices.)
Oh, and I also like the fact that Sony has brought back some amazingly useful things that manufacturers have forgotten in their quest to copy Apple and make things as inconvenient as possible, like a slot for a lanyard and the camera shutter button. Seriously, it's amazingly sad how these things have been ignored, especially the lanyard slot which makes protecting your phone while in use so much easier!
Just started using Z1 and i was on Samsung phone for many year. Never to buy Samsung in future. Looking for phone with water resistance, lanyards and the camera button so I choose Sony. It was outstanding among all other brands. I can upgrade/downgrade the software without problems. Well designed and came with 3000mah battery which can last me at lease 8 hours of heavy used, S4 only last me less then 5 hours. Now I rooted it with dual recovery and never gave me flash counter/know warranty void problems like Samsung phone . With xpose framework and gravity box, which made it very useful and enjoy! Cheers.

my Sg device: Z1 rooted136 ROM by NUT with 2.7.86 dualrecovery, mod by GavityBox 2.9.6. Samsung S2 standby for Z1 when Z1 no power.
I probably have the simplest reason:
It was the only phone in current gen with quad core, great camera, enough ram, AND MICRO SD!
So I had an XZ and I loved it to death. Unfortunately the screen cracked, but I carried it to a repair guy, who repaired the screen...but damaged other stuff in the process -_-. He gave me a new Samsung S4 in replacement of my XZ....I was disappointed...the S4 was just not what I was used to in a Sony phone. Reading this thread encouraged me to sell that S4 plastic mess and I got my XZ1 yesterday....
1. The appearance of this phone...just sheer beauty, I have the white one. Was in town with it and people were just staring lol
2. The feel of it is like what people describe as "premium", but that word just doesn't justify the feel of this phone in my hand...have to make up another word for this.
3. The smoothness, speed and beauty of the UI is incredible. Every time I pick up my phone and use it I feel refreshed.
4. A freaking phone made me emotional!!!....

You know you're a nerd when you get emotional from phones :crying:
I actually understand it though. I've ordered myself an Xperia Z1 today and I can't wait to see how much of an upgrade it really is from my current Xperia S. I'm far from rich, but I really love Sony devices and the Xperia S just can't keep up with me. I figured I'd be able to afford it if I wouldn't buy anything else in the coming two years anymore :fingers-crossed:

You certainly won't regret having the Z1! great phone... I love mine...

Anyone else think Sony has "downgraded" it's UX?

I mean I welcome a cleaner interface, I love how close it resembles AOSP but the launcher... I miss the Xperia Z1 slide from the left to bring up short cuts to the Play Store, etc.
I haven't had the phone long enough but the camera has had a huge improvement in terms of UX.
Also I am hoping they introduce more software features in the Marshmallow update since not much has changed on a software level from the Z1. I never paid attention to the Z2 or Z3+ as I was generally satisfied by the Xperia Z1 up until now. I would have got a Galaxy S6 if the Z5 wasn't waterproof/Galaxy S7 around the corner = me no patience.
I also miss the slide from the left and also the home rotation

I hope Marshmallow brings even more stock Google experience personally

I agree, it has gone backwards slightly. Nexus devices are stock and in my opinion drab. I appreciate the OEM customization layers.

That's a slippery slope and one I don't necessarily agree with. Touchwiz on Samsung, for instance crippled the S6 so badly it is ridiculous. HTC Sense caused problems as well. Google's vanilla experience is slick and fast and Android's openness allows you to find a launcher to suit your needs. Odds are there is one that will emulate whatever experience you are looking for. I switched to the Z5 in large part because of its light touch coupled with the hardware features I really wanted (bigger battery, weatherproof, expandable storage).

I think our point is they have reduced the functionality of their own software from an initial perspective. I like the labels below the icons on the home screen but the slide to the left thing was really useful, now I have to click the menu button to sort apps, which is about 3 more clicks compared to just 1 swipe and a single click. I may sound tedious but the launcher is a step back, the camera's most recent update however makes it imo the best on Android (the UX itself, I have access to an LG G4, and a SGS6 and Sony's Camera UX is pretty impressive)
Overall the stock firmware is much better than my Z1 (which by todays standards is pretty outdated) but I'm glad I never got a Z3+.
I also hope Sony has kept back some goodies for Marshmallow.
Coming from a Note 3 and a OnePlus One, both running CM12.1, I'm pretty happy with the current Xperia firmware. I was hesitating between the Z5 and the S6 Edge: The almost stock firmware is what made me choose the Z5. I'm glad Sony decided to stick with the (almost) stock Quick Toggles/Notifications panel
Google themselves are putting pressure on manufacturers to not bloat there phones so I think you'll see slimming down of software so that performance isn't affected to much have to say coming from a nexus the raw Google experience is slick, in fairness though pretty happy with the Sony doesn't seem to laggy at all just a few software glitches every now and again, it used to be the manufacturer would skin Google to make it a viable seller but that's less and less necessary these days
Sent from my Sony Z5 ooossshhhh
I was hoping they would make the graphics a lot closer to their whats new UI, and add multi screen support for god sakes,
What I like is that unlike LG, Samsung and xiaomi, Sony has a good balance between stock look and cudtomisation. Its not bloated with confusing and unnecessary features like others but it still has some features that stock is missing.

Me!
I really loved the android 4.1.2ui on my xperia ZR with its fluid animations. Then the 4.3 came with white ui and i got used to it and it's themes.. The kitkat was even better bringing transparent status bar and good..
Then lollipop came and i felt the ui not that great compared to the kitkar or jb ones..
Now i tried my friend's Z5 and it looks even bad at some places
I mostly like the new UI. But it just has too many top-bar colours.
I liked the white classy 4.4... But only in the top bar context.
Actually all pop-up windows are looking really good on 5.1, they looked awkward on all previous Androids.
So it's a mixed bag. And I don't miss the left-side menu on app drawer.
However I still prefer Sony's elements over Android's stock ones.
please no
new interface is beautiful looks a lot as AOSP but still have SONY style, new app drawer is nice, i do feel it lacking something but its definitely not the left swipe thing in most SONY phones nowadays, i feel like the app grid is huge we need smaller icons , but those thing doesn't really bother me in experience the phone I love it
