Hi All,
I've done lots of searching but I'm stumped. Any help appreciated.
Device - Verizon Razr M. New - came with JB.
Rooted using motofail2go JB Superuser. Worked.
Installed Safestrap 3.12 from here.
Was attempting to install EnergyROM following Cheezzzz's Guide.
The instructions don't match what my Safestrap menu looked like, but I thought I had everything going okay. But the ROM wouldn't install. Errored out right away when trying to flash, so I figured I'd boot back to stock and come back later. Now I'm bricked.
The only thing I can get is the initial Safestrap menu after holding Power & Vol up + Vol Dn. It appears for about 10 seconds, but neither the "Recovery" or "Continue" buttons are responsive, then it powers back off.
I'm sorry if this is something simple to get me to where I can RSD, but I'm coming from 4 years on different HTC models, so Motos are a new beast for me.
Thanks in advance,
John
Okay - so I was really just pressing/holding combinations of buttons and I managed to get to the original recovery. Got it in fastboot and am flashing with RSD now.
Edit: RSD flashed back to stock.
Did you have the device plugged in during all this? That stalls Safestrap because the phone is just doing a lazy boot to the battery charging graphic. Glad you fixed it though.

Pwr+vol up+vol down until you get to recovery menu. Vol dn until you get to the choice you want, then vol up to choose what you want (vol up is how you select from recovery, fastboot, etc. You can only go down in this menu, not back up. If you miss your choice, just wait and the phone will reboot if you wait too long.) If you choose the recovery option in the beginning menu, you will get the red M and then an Android on its back. At the Android, hold vol down and tap vol up. This will put you into stock recovery.
That combo wouldn't work for me.
If I held down the vol keys and power button, nothing would happen. I tried holding it for three minutes, and nothing. When I let off the keys, the red would pop up after 3-4 seconds and than the SS splash would pop up again without working softkeys.
I came to find that if I started holding down the three keys right when SS splash popped up, I could get into the fastboot menu

I noticed a lot of people having trouble booting into recovery mode from the phone. This is how to do it. With the phone turned off hold the power button +vol down button until you see the "Vibrant" logo on the screen. Once you see the logo, take your finger off the power button but keep pressing the vol down untill you see the recovery image. Ive tried every other way that people have posted and this is the only way I could get it to work. Sorry if this is already posted somewhere else but I couldnt find it. Hope this helps.
Open terminal emulator
Code:
su
reboot recovery
....Or are you not rooted yet?
And you have to hold its BOTH volume buttons not just volume down to boot into recovery.
- Hold both volume buttons
- Press power button
- When vibrant comes up, let go of power but continue to hold the two volume buttons
- Bam Recovery
I always let go of all the buttons when the Vibrant logo comes up, and it goes to recovery just fine.

I can second this. I am my own little vulcan deathgrip to press them all at the same time though, and still be able to release without dropping the phone.
You could also download quick reboot from the market for those already rooted, it has an option to reboot into recovery.

This ... or use the Reboot Into Recovery option from the Clockwork ROM Manager, which I would expect most Vibrant users to have right now if they're rooted.
What if none of this works?
I've a Vibrant (one week old) rooted. Clockwork installed KiNgxKernel-Vib-3-2.6.29.6 etc. However unless I use clockwork I can't get into recovery mode. Would really like to know a working key press combo if possible.
I read somewhere about some Vibrants being hardware locked. Assuming this is true perhaps that's what this phone is.
I recently installed the Acer Iconia Phone Disabler app, and promptly forgot the instructions to disabling it before updating. I tried to install Virtuous Picasso, now it's stuck on the Acer logo screen.
I can't even get CWM to boot (tried powering up pressing vol down and power), but no joy.
Any suggestions?

Well you're either booting it wrong or you've written it wrong. You don't power up the device then press the keys you just press volume down and hold power until the device goes into recovery. So basically you power it on with those buttons.
And the brick could be because you didn't wipe the device. did you do it?
I don't think that app is your issue, because that ROM would have re-written those apps anyway.
See the thread from SC2K on how you might be able to get back to boot.

OK, I wasn't doing it right, apparently. My phone is a Samsung Fascinate, when booting it into recovery I can let go of the buttons once it powers on. The difference is the Acer has to have the buttons held down until you actually see the recovery text appear in the upper left corner of the screen.
So anyhow...after doing it properly, I was able to get it to boot into recovery. Thanks for the suggestions. I've got my tablet back on its' feet, and restored (thank you Titanium Backup!)
Glad you've got it fixed.
And yes this tablet can confuse you because you have to hold the button for quite a long time.

I'm new to nexus family too and had a lot of problems with it. (Never have problems but this recovery cost me a lot of time).
The solution is:
When you are EXACTLY at the red exclamation mark screen.
1) Press and hold POWER
2) Press volume UP.
That should show the options in less than 2 seconds.

I am experiencing the same "no command" issue, already tried the volume up + power and nothing happens, if I flash CWM touch 6.0.3.1 everything works but I can't go back to stock recovery no matter what, any advise?
Already flashed stock recovery using Wugfresh's Nexus Root toolkit but the "no command" problem persists.
Thank you.

Yeap, same thing, I press and hold the power and then I press the volume up, nothing happens. I even formatted the phone completely using the 4.2.2 image from google, nothing, the no command error keeps coming up, the only way to have a recovery is flashing CWM touch.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM ----------
I've got my N4 maybe a month ago, I installed the 4.2.2 OTA as soon as I got it, the I proceeded to unlock it and root it, one day someone recommended to clear the cache of the phone using the stock recovery (which I thought I had / to fix another problem that I was having) I went to fastboot and tried to access recovery, BOOM, just an android laying down with a red exclamation mark, no "no command" error at all. I downloaded CWM touch and flashed it using Nexus Root Toolkit, that worked fine, but I didn't want a custom recovery and also I needed to fix a 3G latency problem that I was having, after some reading I saw that someone recommended a full flash using the stock google image.
A couple of days I proceeded to flash the factory image, I installed it, after that I did a factory reset from android itself. After doing all that I wanted to clear the cache with the stock recovery just in case, BOOM, an an android laying down with a red exclamation mark and this time with a "no command" error. Tried the trick of holding the power and pressing the volume up, NOTHING HAPPENS!
Right now I am using CWM Touch.
Any suggestion?
Thank you.
No real solution??? Sad...

Nothing, this answer is unhelpful
I have this issue as well. I tried to "unroot" my N4 (and Im a noob at this), and I think I did something wrong because when I access recovery mode from the bootloader I see the "dead android" but no matter what I do I dont see the control/menu. I tried:
- holding all buttons at the same time
- holding the power button and the down button (in sequence)
- holding the power button and the up button (in sequence)
So now I can not boot my Nexus, I can not wipe my Nexus and I can not access it from the PC. I was running 4.3 and I used the "How to Unroot Nexus 4 to Stock 4.2 Jelly Bean on Windows!" youtube guide ( I am not allowed to post links) to unroot my device (nexus 4), where I fail at 8:45, I simply dont see that menu popping up. Instead, my Nexus shuts down or reboots.
Please help
Is there no fix for this?
I decided to go back to stock to get 4.3. I flashed 4.2.2 using the Nexus toolkit and then got 4.3 via an OTA after this I rooted my phone. As the OTA worked I would imagine that the stock recovery was working. When I tried to install the latest OTA I got the no command issue. I can flash cwm recovery no problem. But when I try to flash stock recovery either via a toolkit or via fastboot command it does not work - no command. And holding in power and then volume up doe nothing. Any advice? I suppoe I cando a full wipe flash the stock 4.3 image and see if this helps. Has anyone had any success fixing this problem?
I have the same issue.
Even when trying to get to stock recovery through Nexus Root Toolkit gets me a NO COMMAND screen.
It seems like the recovery is not there.
Still looking for an answer - any help?

When you get the no command prompt do the following.
Press and hold the power button followed by pressing and holding the volume up button. Release only the volume up button after 2 seconds and you will be in recovery.

Seems that you have the stock recovery installed (that Android laying on its back with a red triangle is the stock recovery).
If I'm not missunderstanding your issue, it shouldn't really be an issue but it's just like how it should be.

"No Command" issue solved for Zuum 9330
I want to thank every one of you guys. I had same issue with my phablet. By reading your comments I got ideas to try some key combinations, and factory reset my phone. Here is what I did:
1) Power down the phone
2) Press and hold "volume up", then Press and hold "power" button until Android logo with the message "no command" shows up
3) Press and hold "volume down", then Press "back" button then release "back" button and the menu will show up. Then release "volume down".
4) use "volume up" or "volume down" to navigate menu
5) to execute selection, use "home" button
I hope it helps someone.
If so, please tell me.
Total first timer, flash to stock as had messed up sd card partition trying to flash custom ROM, really worried when couldn't access recovery after stock flash. Thank you thank you thank you, this totally worked!!!
thank you a lot. saved my phone. i thought i will through away the nexus 4 but the combination of no command power button and volume up did well
Hope this helps, you press and release volume up! worked perfectly
Performing a factory reset may take some time, so make sure that you plug your device into a power source before you start. If your phone becomes unresponsive at any point during these steps, you can restart it by holding down the Power button for several seconds.
If your phone is on, turn it off.
Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery".
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command".
While holding down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button once.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Power button to select it.
Press the Volume Down button seven times to highlight "Yes - erase all user data" and press the Power button to select it.
After the reset is complete, press the Power button to select the option to reboot your device.
When you've finished, follow these steps to restore your data.
For some reason I can't boot into recovery mode. Yesterday I tried to flash the PAC ROM but got stuck in the "PAC is loading" screen. I had to turn off and flash back to stock with RSD light. Now, I can't get into my recovery (TWRP 2.5.0.0). When I use adb to get to recovery I get a screen with a fallen over android with its hood open and a a red triangle with a exclamation mark in the middle. I've tried to re-flash TWRP but that doesn't change anything. I'm assuming this is some kind of error, anybody know what to do? I've also tried to use cwm but I can't get into that either.
Also, how do I not get stuck in that "PAC is loading" screen when flashing?

The easiest way to get into recovery is to power down, hold all three buttons and select recovery. Try wiping data after flashing PAC. Make sure your boot loader is unlocked.

couple of things:
1.) battery could be low, and thus unable to boot up. I would suggest plugging it in (outlet, not PC). let it sit for 15 minutes. you should see the battery charging screen. after waiting 15 minutes, try to get into recovery via power+volume up+ volume down, then select recovery
2.) doing the RSD could wipe the recovery - are you able to boot up normally into the ROM? if not, make sure you have all of the drivers installed on your PC, and re-read the installation instructions (I'm sure you already have, but sometimes going over them again might open your eyes up to something you forgot)
I'm not sure where it is, but see if you can boot into safemode (google search for it).
my only similar experience is when I tried to install a custom kernel on PAC, and nothing would display on my screen (despite me hearing notifications). I tried several times to get back into TWRP, but finally got it after pressing the three buttons, waiting about 10 seconds, pressing volume down one time, then volume up once (the pattern to get into recovery)
hope this helps.
RSD flashes your stock recovery again.
Hold volume up + down + power, wait for 5 seconds for the phone to power off.
Then hold the same, volume up + down + power to get into your menu screen, select adb fast boot and flash your recovery. (fastboot flash recovery YOUR_RECOVERY_FILE.img)
Power + Volume Down (-) = Reboot
During reboot:
Press and hold Volume Up (+) = Recovery
Press and hold Volume Down (-) = Fast Boot
Press and hold Volume Up (+) and Volume Down (-) = Boot Menu

In Developer options, enable the Advanced Reboot.
The 3 button combo will work, it's just a matter of timing. Remove and replace the battery, hold vol up + home, then power, holding all three, and when it vibrates, let go of power only.
You could also hook up in USB Debugging mode and issue the command:
adb reboot recovery
And if you don't have a developer option go into about phone and tap build number 7 times.

Some people, including myself, cannot get it to work with the standard procedure...the solution is to basically do it twice. Here's a copy/paste of the instructions:
Long press the power button and choose "power off". Give your phone a few seconds to turn off completely. Once it's off, press and hold these 3 buttons at the same time: POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME. Look at the top left of the screen - as soon as you see little blue text saying entering recovery, let go of all buttons immediately...but be ready...if your phone vibrates (it might be trying to reboot normally again), press and hold those same buttons again until you see the blue text again...then let go immediately. Now you will see your recovery!

Cool
CWM recovery only requires you to push the volume up key and then press the power key until the phone vibrates and then let go of the power button only. When the blue lettering appears, let go of the volume up. The home button should only be required with TWRP.

Whatever the reason, that is not the case with my phone and many others. I've read several threads of people having the same issue. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the OUDHS CWM w/ auto-loki or what.
I've never heard of letting go of the power button only while still pressing volume up, but I gave it a try just to see...it did get me into CWM recovery but only after doing it twice, similar to the method I wrote above.
I have tried letting go of both volume up and power (no pressing home at all) and never found a way to get into recovery.
Anyways, it seems there's no harm in pressing the home button either way and it's probably easier than letting go of the power button and still holding volume up...and easier to explain too lol.

Can you get the blue text in the upper left corner of the screen to appear at any time?
In my case, trying to get into recovery via the 3 buttons is a matter of very precise timing if I try pressing all 3 buttons at the same time. The instant I see the blue text I let go of everything and it works. Hold it for even a fraction of a second longer and the blue disappears and it goes into a normal boot. It works much better if I press Vol Up, then add Power, then add Home. I'm doing that sequence fairly quickly but the point is I'm not trying to press 3 buttons at the exact same time.
But I'm using CWM so I don't need the 3rd button...
From a powered-down state I hold Vol Up then Power and hold both through the vibration until the blue text appears and it goes into CWM recovery just fine. There seems to be a bit more leeway in terms of how fast you need to let go this way although I just tested and holding about a half second too long caused it to bounce out of recovery and do a normal boot. Let go immediately when you see the blue.
Phone won't boot..
So after using CASUAL, my phone rebooted, and got stuck on the splash screen with RECOVERY BOOTING.. in the top left corner. I pull the battery, try to do a normal reboot; takes me to the same screen. Trying the 3 button combo for recovery; same thing. Any suggestions?? I am NOT on MF3 Firmware.
