4.2.2 and .48 radio on T-Mobile - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody else having data issues when it comes to the newer .48 radio with T-Mobile? My data is constantly dropping and I'm in a great coverage area. (Always 3-4 bats with hpsa+) I wasn't having this problem with 4.2.1 roms and the .33 radio. I tried to revert back to using the .33 radio and the .27 radio with my 4.2.2 rom but no luck. I don't hear audio in calls and it seems like .48 will only work. Anybody else in this dilemma and how have you solved it?
To be honest, the data drops don't annoy me as much. It's the reconnecting that bugs me. Some times it takes 1-2 minutes to reconnect.

It's weird. I've heard a few people got it to work with 27 but not others. I'm the unlucky batch that can't get .27 to work.
Simms, you're located in New York right? I wonder if that has to do with anything. I'm from Sf/ bay area.

try redownloading/reflashing it?

Same here.
Constant dropping. And sometimes it will stay in E/G mode and not switch to H even when in a known strong H area.
Losing signal all the time as well.
I can barely make phone calls and when I do, there is static.
Starting to HATE t-mobile....the data speeds are fast, if only you can get a signal.
I've even tried new sim cards, and no change.
Anyone have any other suggestions on Carriers for this phone? plan price is not an issue, I just want quality.

I've noticed similar issues with my TMo sim but not my straight talk at&t one. I just attributed it to bad service or coverage by TMo. If it is a radio issue however, and someone can confirm it, this could be very interesting. Would be willing to downgrade to .27. Tried .33 but noticed little difference except larger battery drain. Glad I'm not only one experiencing this issue as well though.

I tried flashing the 27 radio again. Everything works, except the damn audio while in call. It sucks too because my internet speeds are so much better on .27! I hardly see a loading screen. Haha.
Maybe it's time to go back to 4.2.1 rasbean for good. But that means no more flashing
Edit: I wonder if using a different recovery would effect it. I'm using twrp recovery, but maybe should try it with cwm recovery. Or even fast boot.

I'm curious which ROM or kernel you may be using. I have been thinking of trying this baseband out. Even though I rarely make calls, the times I do I would prefer the audio to work. I'm using Franco kernel r102 and trailblazerz11's CM 10.1.

Installed the 27 radio this a.m. after reading your post and I'm having best results ever with this phone (data) and EVERYRHING works including calls .... AOKP/FRANCO 4.2.2.-- AT&T Anchorage ,AK
THANKS !!

I'm on At&T and all the basebands work fine.. I did try out tmobiles prepaid $30 plan to try and cut costs but my area sucks for t mobile I also could only get .48 to work on T-Mobile with multiple roms otherwise I had no audio in calls.. So sticking with AT&T here

Switched to the. 27 radio and I'm getting data speeds i didn't know i could get in my market. I was getting 5-7 mb down now I'm getting 16-18. In Orlando FL on tmobile. On trailblazer s cm10.1 stock kernel. So far everything seems to be working
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

Trying .27 right now on trailblazerz11 and recent Franco milestone with no issues.
Audio in calls is working fine. All other baseband related functions work well. Good signal strength. Think I'll stick with it.

i definitely wouldn't go flashing any 'ole radio just because its available for other phones. proceed at your own risk everyone...his boost could easily be coincidence. youre not gonna get that much change.

This radio works fine on the Eris. Still, use caution when flashing it and if your phone explodes don't spam the dev forum asking for help.
No more not being able to make/receive calls as of yet. Also it seems my wifi tether works now but may have been the new ivan rom that came out.
I recommend against flashing non-Eris specific radios.
Do it at your own risk.

Yeah, that's not true dude. Flashing an incorrect radio update CAN completely brick your phone. Flashing a radio update updates your SPL. If the SPL isn't compatible with your phone/kernel, it could very well completely ruin your phone beyond recoverable.
You're lucky, but for future reference, it's a really bad idea to go flashing any ol' radio update except one that's been tested and working with your phone and kernel.

so awesome
This is why I felt comfortable with flashing the radio...
The ONLY reason I flashed this radio is due to the fact that others did this with no bad side effects (so far). Also, toastcfh has tested other heroc radios on an Eris with no bad side effects (so far) as well as done some good research for us by flashing the radios and seems to be quite knowledgeable when it comes to them.
I'm not authorizing that you should go flashing "any 'ol radio" but heroc and desirec radios seem to be created with the intention of being used on Sprint and Verizon according to research by toastcfh.
toastcfh said:
now for the question about why some radios say heroc instead of eris...
the heroc radio are just that... heroc radios from sprint. its a cdma radio so it works the same as verizon radio. dont believe me?! do a strings | grep on all the radios and u will see they are all using both sprint and verizon logins and such. also as right now im running the latest radio which is the heroc one. everything works fine and its the one ive had best results with on both my Sprint Hero and my wifes Verizon Eris. although others may find better results with other versions.

I believe that was/is a bug with the nexus lock mod. I remember when lwp mod first came out I tried it and noticed the sim card message. I have not gone back to that since so I can't be 100% sure.

Is anyone experiencing any issues with this one, I have flashed this radio and my 3G signal is not as good as it used to be.
I have 2 Eris' one stock (baseband 2.32.40.11.09) and one rooted with 2.42.00.03.10. The stock gets 4 3G bars with -70dBm while the rooted Eris gets 2 or less bars with -52 dBm.
From what I'm seeing, 3G speed is also suffering on the Eris with the newer baseband. Can anyone make sense of this?

yeah that's what doesn't make sense to me. the rooted phone says it has a better signal strength, but I'm only getting 2 3G bars (at most!).
I would like to test it but I am unable to find the original 2.32.40.11.09 radio image.
@above
metering has changed in more recent radios. aka bars vs signal strength is different.
soooo is this a yes or no go for flashing?
I tried this out, no noticeable difference in signal strength or speed where I am. Flashed it back to the newest ERIS radio...

I have already loaded a rom sorry I should have mention that before. I have loaded the EVO ZONE rom and ClockMod Recovery. Can I flash a up to date/ better radio with out flashing the entire rom?
Just try to update profile and update prl and see if that works. You should do that after flashing.
I did it but my 3G speeds are bad. I ran a speedtest while in a good 3G service area and was getting 0.4kbps down. I would like to go back to the stock Sense rom but dummy me didnt back it up.
I'm also experiencing the same issue(s)
I totally agree with ropodope. It can definitely be the rom, I used the original Miui and noticed I had poor reception where I would normally have good reception. It could be the radio or maybe even the kernel, my suggestion would be try different roms and kernels because you can find what works best on your phone.
Good luck.

Yes you can download updated radios or previous radios to find your trouble spot. Just dl them to your sd card and flash as you would a rom or a kernel. Wipe your cache and dalvik cache first. Wait a couple of minutes to allow the radio to write the image. When done flashing, just reboot. The radios are on here. Just do a search.

You have any suggestion on getting a good radio to flash?
You should try downloading rom manager from the market. I'm sure there is a few stock evo roms on there. If you can't find a rom that is to your liking you can check the roms in the evo 4G development forums here on XDA. Be sure to read about the roms and what others are saying about the rom before you flash. A lot of the time I find that after seeing 10 to 20 people complain about the same or similar issues I wouldn't be satisfied with that rom, but that's just me.

I love my AirRave! Def great where Sprint signal isn't avail!
Here are your radios, and other nifty updates: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
As far as 3g I have tried this fix with good results:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
To be honest, Ive had bad reception with PRI 1.77 and 1.90. Also my roms are varying day to day i try new ones.
roms i think are good are MikZ, mikG, Evokings and other sense roms.
When I got my phone in January I had GREAT signal here at work. I noticed that after I rooted it I lost that great signal. Now I'm back to 1-0 bars all day. I think something in the rooting process screws the signal, I don't know much about it so I'm not sure what that could be. All I know is before I rooted my phone I sat at work with 3g signal in the basement of the building. After rooting I'm lucky to get 2 bars in the parking lot. I ran just the rooted stock for 2 months hoping it would magically clear itself up but of course it didn't
I've tried 3 ROMS so far. Fresh 4.0, MikFroyo & VaelPak. Of the 3 I seem to get a slightly better signal with VP.

I made a post about this last night. But on my 2x unlocked/rooted Nexus 4s I no longer get 4G with LTE enabled. Instead I see them switching 3g/h+ but have no/limited connectivity. And when they can connect out it is extremely slow.
Have tried multiple roms, multiple radios... different kernels. Also, have one Nexus that is bone stock, not even unlocked.rooted (so it never had lte enabled) and it is experiencing the same issue.
At the sametime I have a couple other phones on tmobile (htc one, note 2 and an s4) as well, and they are all fine.

[Q] Switching between 3G and H is such an annoyance... Any help?

I've read up on this and understand it is supposed to be normal, but man does it make my phone so much worse. Every single time a page loads it has to switch from 3G to H. My reception seems like it sucks so bad because of this. Sometimes it doesn't switch. I get good bars everywhere I go, but it feels like I have terrible reception.
I've never understood radios and such. I'm rooted with the stock rom. Would this be better if I tried cyanogenmod with a different radio? There has to be a fix for this issue.
If you solve this for me, I'll kiss you through the internet.
I don't think kissing anyone over the internet would make them want to help you any more
Its how the phone works, its supposed to switch to 3G to H. H comes on when data is more active.

the bars are for your gsm radio, telephone calls. they dont give you an idea on data speeds. do a speed test to see how good of a data connection you have.

I knew the bars are for phone calls, but I'm in the city of Chicago and have a hard time believing my data is as bad as it seems. I'll have plenty of times where it shows 3G connection and doesn't switch to H, therefore no data comes through. I've had plenty of times where I didn't believe I wasn't getting data, so I reset my phone and sure enough - data!
I do believe something could be wrong with my specific phone. I might need to try a full reset or flash cyanogenmod. I just didn't want to do that. Especially without checking with you genius's beforehand!

The radio is .48.. Baseband is Radio. You can go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227 and try out other radio to see if you get better reception.

I can do that, but I'll first have to figure out how to do it. For some reason my drivers say they don't work and it won't let me flash clockwork mod. I was going to make another post about it after I figured this out. Do you think radio could be the issue?
Also, I am on Tmobile, but I thought LTE didn't really work since it was ATT band 4 or something and only very specific areas had it?

Well, I just found out my APN was the one used when you are on LTE. I changed it to the non LTE version and will test over the next few days. If that was my problem, I'm going to be upset at the Tmobile lady who put in that info.
Please do let us know if it's any better after using the epc APN.
If you flash to the .33 radio, the LTE will turn on and it's very good at holding a data connection. It's just when it's not available and my phone connects to hspa+. I have similar problems as you. My signal indicator works great and its blue but no internet. I'm wondering if i'll need to keep switching apns. I hope not.

If you flash to the .33 radio, the LTE will turn on and it's very good at holding a data connection. It's just when it's not available and my phone connects to hspa+. I have similar problems as you. Hmm. Some good points. I'll let you know in a few days. If it works better, then I might just leave it. It is interesting that you are in Chicago and LTE works. Makes me want to try it. I'll see how this goes first.

Well, I did my commute this morning and there really was no change. It could be a combination of poor data reception areas and slow switching. I'd like to try to flash a new radio, but I don't know how. I can start a new thread about this, but I'll at least mention my problem here. I installed the Nexus 4 Toolkit and went through all the steps to make sure the drivers were installed correctly and such. I did this a long time ago when I rooted the phone. But something is wrong and it doesn't let me flash clockworkmod. It tells me to go through the steps again, which I have tried.
Is there a way to flash a new radio without clockwordmod?

I've been tempted to try messing with lte on my nex 4 as well...live in chicagoland...just worried about how good the coverage is and how well the phone would perform outside lte coverage since I drive all over the tri state area and need my phone to be stable for work.

Lte is amazing in Chicago but not as strong in Chicagoland. However, hspa+ is garbage in Chicago but better in Chicago land.
As for cwm, I prefer twrp. You can just download goo manager from the app store and it will install twrp for you. As far as I know you need to use a custom Rom that supports the older radios or else your calling might mess up. I use aokp.

Well, I tried to use goo manager to install aokp. It seemed like it would work, but nothing happened when I flashed it. It reset and seemed like it was installing something, then I rebooted with no change. Strange.

Just wanted to let you know... I flashed Cyanogenmod and the 33 radio. Everything is so much better. Connection is quicker when switching, but also the 4G is fast! I should have done this a while ago. Been testing for 2 days. I'm in the city, so not sure about the burbs.

I actually tried that a few weeks ago, before I knew what I was doing. I wasn't able to flash it because I didn't have a custom recovery. I'm glad I went to CyanogenMod though. It seems to be faster and there are little things that make it better than stock.

Yeah I was running paranoid android for awhile, currently running stock for the 4.3 update, contemplating cm 10.2 when that gets solid or PA again once they get everything sorted out from the 4.3 hijinks.

I didn't think it would be worth it to switch, but it is. Stock is great, but CM is better. I haven't used paranoid android.

Yeah CM has a lot of nice additions, Paranoid is pretty slick...been a fan of that one on multiple devices. It's built around swapping ui dpi...so you can set your phone to act like a phablet or tablet per app...ie...make gmail look like it does on your tablet on your phone. Let's you drop out the soft keys and replace them with a pop up slide wheel/etc and has a lot of the AOSP and CM features like the quick notification toggles etc.

MHC19I radio T-Mobile

Anyone seeing worst reception with T-Mobile on the newest radio for MHC19I? Im wondering if it's just me or if it's hanging out the last tower I was near for too long before switching to the next tower? This is what I'm seeing myself. And what radio for T-Mobile works best for some of you if you've tried a few out? Thanks to those who may reply.
Not t-mobile but for me reception with Verizon seems worse with MHC19I's radio

So which radio are you using?
I'm on T-Mobile running the latest build. No issues to report here.
on tmobile with the latest update, no issues here.
T-Mobile also no issues and LTE works better with latest radio.... I'm on a custom aosp ROM.

Are you guys all running stock rom? I have LTE connectivity issues but installed a custom rom within hours of getting my 6p and am curious if I just need to go back to stock. I'll probably try going back to stock anyway... it's so frustrating having to keep the phone on 3g to maintain data.

No I'm not the stock ROM. I'm using uberstock which is for the most part plain aosp.

OK, well I just flashed back to latest stock & unroot with no improvement. Signal still drops, returns, drops. [emoji20]

Just move my N6P from Sprint to TMobile and im seeing an improvement on my signal even getting better battery life which could be related to the signal.

I'm on Fi but T-Mobile is the stronger signal at my house. After March update I am still at around -95 dbm. So no change in signal. However my battery use from cell standby has dropped and I get better battery life.
Agree with you, data not good here in Cali after the MHC update, i might go back to the build before this

You could just change your radio
I'm having the same issue on T-Mobile with the newest radio. Reflashed 2.50 and back in business.
