[Q] Use of Thumb keyboard - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I use Thumb Keyboard (Phone/Tablet) for some time now. First on ma TF101 Asus tablet, without any problem, and now on my Nexus 10. It sometimes "hangs" meaning is stopd with last character used highlighted. After some time it releases again. Anyone having same problem? Suggestions?

I am using it on my N10 and haven't had that happen yet. Running Paranoid Android ROM.

Hangs on my N10 as well. I think it's been that way since the change to 4.2.2.

I've been using SwiftKey tablet keyboard and it's awesome... I has both a regular keyboard with swipe and a thumb keyboard that you can control the long press duration

mine hangs on thumb keyboard also. but after constant use it doesn't. I think its the initial use.

[INFO] to people with the keyboard. the keyboard disabled bug

I'm just curious since i've now experienced this disabled keyboard where it's still plugged in and you can see the mouse but the keyboard stops working until you undock and redock it.
But i've noticed the ONLY times it's happened to me have been in the browser.
in no other app have i personally had this bug show up, but in the browser, i'd say every other time i go into it.
i enabled the debug settings and disabled openGL rendering and not only did that get rid of the lag while typing, but also seems to of helped with the keyboard.
i'm just wondering for those of you with the keyboard, have, and where have you gotten this bug?

What setting is that? I haven't seen that anywhere.
Haven't had this problem yet
What build and mobiledock version are you using?
Also having a random issue where the wifi gets turned off on it's own. luckily it's just a button press to turn it back on, but thats seriously annoying. and only happens with the keyboard.
@SilentMobius: in the browser put the URL as about:config and then go into the settings. it helped with the lag abit, but now it's just as bad. need a tablet version of firefox asap.

Maybe you have a defective keyboard?
honestly starting to think that.
Keyboard still disconects sometimes, trackpad dosn't work at all now, and my music buttons don't control the music player,
and when i press play it plays some german song for about 30 seconds and then stops.
aye wtf.
*edit* well i figured out wtf song it's playing. one of the default songs that game with the device.
*edit2* alright so erased that song, and fixed the trackpad, somehow it thought i pressed the disable trackbad button, haven't gotten a disconnect in a bit either. Music buttons still refuse to work. thinking maybe it's because i have poweramp installed...
*edit3* fixed the music buttons. Opened a music file through the file manager HD app and told it to always use music to open it.
Apparently if you don't have a specific app selected, the buttons don't work since they don't know what app to control. kinda dumb but understandable.
Also had another disconnect, and now i'm 99% sure it's due to the multitouch/scrolling since thats what caused it again.
So going to try not using MT on it and see what happens.
*edit4* alright well everythings fixed except the disconnect which seems to happen every 30 seconds to 5 minutes constantly. and is really ****ing annoying.
i have the exact same issues with my keyboard. Its disconnected about 12 times today for no apparent reason. Seems to be mostly in the browser, but its hard to say if there's any pattern. I'm frustrated as hell right now.

This is crazy. I decided to disconnect the keyboard altogether for now. The Eee Pad is virtually unusable with the keyboard right now. I've opened a support ticket with Asus to see if they can help. I'll update here when I get a response.
aren't we all glad the keyboard has updateable firmware
Actually I notice there is a message when you plug in your keyboard telling you to change your default keyboard to Asus keyboard. I'm going to try that out now.

Same here. I just changed my settings from US keyboard to ASUS keyboard. Let's see if that makes a difference.
If it makes you feel any better, mine works for ~30seconds-1 minute before either hanging or shutting down completely..

Same here. Then, when I tried to restart the tablet, it hung on the ASUS logo. It wouldn't completely restart until I separated the tablet from the dock.

its starting to seem to me that the issue is with the trackpad. anytime i have it off, it's fine. but once i start using it for a bit, then it goes.

I think you may have figured it out.
I've been using the keyboard now for the last 30 minutes without th trackpad enabled and no disconnects at all. I couldn't use it for more than 5 minutes before without the keyboard freezing.
I can at least get some use out of the keyboard now.
More of us should report this issue to ASUS Support. Here's the link to open a support ticket with them:
http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx
The ASUS Eee Transformer is an option on their support page, but not the keyboard, so I entered my Transformer S/N into the form, but included my keyboard S/N in the comments.

What is up with the keyboard on 3.1?!

Has anyone else noticed the keyboard has taken a turn for the worst in 3.1? Multi touch no longer seems to work, nor does holding a key produce key repeat or shift characters. What the hell?! Can someone shed some light on this? Pretty please? It's driving me crazy.

I thought so at first, too, especially since I'm not used to tap typing at all. I swipe using Ultra Keyboard on my Evo. But after a little while, it became pretty easy. Easier, of course, in portrait, especially for small hands like mine, but I don't have much problem now in landscape, either.
i agree. Its pretty frustrating actually

I reapplied the 3.1 update, and that seems to have solved the issue, although I have to start from scratch again. Thanks for your help, everyone.
Edit: Nevermind. The problem's back.

Two suggestions that may or may not help:
Go into recovery and
1) Do a fix permissions.
2) wipe dalvik cache in advanced. (note: this will cause a longer that usual boot up time on the next reboot)
3.1 rooted wifi, no problems here
Latest version of thumbs keyboard has a mode to go back to the full keyboard.
Click the thumbskeyboard icon and it will switch modes
Thanks again, everyone. Third time wiping and reflashing was, apparently, a charm. Hopefully it's for real this time, otherwise my Xoom might just find itself transformed into an expensive frisbee. I still don't know what went wrong. I never did get a chance to try fixing permissions or wiping Dalvik cache. Anyway, it's appropriate that today is Friday the 13th.
i never rooted the Zoom and I have that problem with my keyboard too. Long press on the / sign and the @ don't pop up like it used to. Or any other keys showing there alternate. Or holding the Backspace button and it doesn't delete charectors all together?

How do you do this?
2 factory resets fixed the problem. Wtf
Same problem on my wifi only xoom non root. Is there a way to get this keyboard working without having to factory reset as more then half the memory is already used and I really don't want to move it to my computer.
just switched to thumb keyboard and did a long press and it worked like normal so I left it in caps lock and switched to the stock keyboard and it starting working again.
I'm really confused about this now???
Working just fine here.

Keyboard Issues...Just me?

In the past few days, my keyboard has been acting up. I've been using Smart Keyboard pro since the day I got my phone and LOVED it, but for the past few days, it's been acting the bollix. Basically, I could be pressing the delete button for maybe 4 or 5 times, and it would enter 2 z's and delete 3 charachters?
I thought that it might just be the keyboard, so I switched to the default one, and it did happen, but not as much. I have just installed the Gingerbread Keyboard from the market, and it seems to be working ok, but it's still annoying. Anyone else had any problems with their keyboard entering random letters?

Try removing the factory installed screen protector... it does wonders for touch sensitivity and brightness of the screen. I highly recommend it.

already done that
I too have had this problem twice now.
The first fix was to install Gingerbread Keyboard and it seemed to fix.
Then i had the same problem again (If i pressed "p" it would also press "t" and pressing "delete" would also press "c") and fixed it by cleaning the screen with a wet wipe.
The problem for me when it happens is basically when you press the right hand side of the screen in landscape mode, it also think you are pressing the middle of the screen at the same time.
Its only happened twice so im not all that bothered.
Try cleaning the screen with wet wipe and see if it fixes.
I've been using swype...and as cool and innovative as it is...I'm always having to double our triple check my text msgs and posts...lately I've been having to correct my corrections..its a bit ridiculous so I'm trying to get into the habit if reading what I type every few words..

I just posted a thread about a multitouch issue on the xperia play. I think it may be causing your problems. It may not make sense what I am saying right now but if you read my thread it might make sense.
Basically when you are typing fast you will definitely have 2 touch points on the keyboard. and the Xperia Play is counting more than 2 touch points. So your third touch maybe registered as a 3rd finger.
Here is my post if you want to take a look
OK. I've just cleaned the screen with a wet wipe. I'm going to post this message and leave it if it makes any incorrect entries.
Seems to have worked. I will now try landscape orientation.
OK, so portrait seems to have worked well enough. I'm trying out the landscape input now. Seems to be working. I was kinda worried about this problem, but cleaning the screen seems to have sorted it out.
Also, I have installed swype, but I do not really like it. Its awkward. I used to love it on my WinMo 6.1 phone (Omnia) however, I do not feel that i should be restricted to what keyboard I can use because of the phone not responding to input properly.
Back to portrait, OK. Seems to have worked. Nope, its doing it again now. Dunno why?

I have a question.
Is this problem consistent like it happens every single time or does it come and go?
I personally use swype and I love it. I have not had this problem yet.
It's not a software problem, it is hardware.
When mine has had the problem, it does it on stock keyboard, chinese keyboard and gingerbread keyboard.
Basically, for me, when i touch the furthermost right hand side of the screen in landscape mode, it also registers as touching in the middle of the screen too.
Well it only started happening in the past few days. I'm gonna reflash back to 2.3.3 stock and see does that fix the issues. If not what's everyone's suggestions?

Well that was just my theory to the OP. The multitouch problem does exist but I thought the problems with the OP's keyboard was related to this. Turns out its not.
I flashed CM7 and haven't experienced this problem yet, but I'm sure I will at some stage... *sigh*

typing too fast; keystrokes not registering

hey guys
does anyone else have a problem with their atrix, where if you type extremely fast (2-3 char per second), the atrix does not register the key?
i'm not talking about they normal keyboard lag (type and then then 3-4 sec later it shows up on the screen, got rid of that by turning off haptic feedback), my issue is that when I type fast, i can see the popup for a key, but it won't register on the screen.
for example, if i type happy, i would see the popup on the keyboard for each individual letter (H A P P Y), but it would only register H P P Y, almost like the multitouch isn't working properly.
the effect is very pronounced on aftermarket keyboards (i've tried a lot, ICS, GO, swiftkey), and they are all WORSE than the stock keyboard. the simplest fix is to type slowly, but that just ruins my train of thought.
can anyone help?

yeah I noticed this too, it seems like the multitouch doesn't work properly. What ROM are you using? I'm on WetDream 1.2 still. I don't know why it's this way but it makes me very sad. It's very annoying. Anyone else have this?
I have this problem as well. I went on a rampage downloading a million different keyboards, but to no avail.
I have the same problem. Could it be the digitizer?
Are you guys running any CM9 ROM? If so, that's your problem. Since these ROMs are using older drivers that are not made for ICS, you are going to face these problems until Motorola....more like MotoLOLa....releases the ICS drivers later this year.

I accidentally hit the "thanks" button when I meant to hit "quote" but anyways, I'm using cm7 and this problem happens on every different rom that I have tried. I have never had so much problems with a new phone before that I'm starting to think that motorola can't even make phones that work anymore.
Yes I believe the problem is poor implementation from Motorola.
IF you use the stock keyboard (the multittouch one) this problem goes away. Just figured this out this morning.
I am using a blur based stock rom (one of nottach's) so I still have that keyboard available. I think this will be enough to keep me on stock based roms or at least roms that will have that keyboard.

That is very weird. When I was using CM7, I never faced any keyboard issues. It kills me that the Atrix's worst keyboard, IMO, was when I was using stock GB. Absolutely the worst thing ever.

bump for more attention.
I've always had this issue on every ROM with every keyboard I've ever used including the stock Motorola one. I just chalked it up to the multitouch not working since it doesn't seem to work correctly for anything.

I've only ever had this problem with the stock ICS keyboard on a CM9/ICS Rom, the 'solution' was to disable either the keyboard's or android's spelling correction. Can't say I've know exactly what's causing it on anything else, I'm afraid.

Workaround / partial fix for Android 4.3 bluetooth keyboard problems

I have an Avantalk bluetooth keyboard. When I installed 4.3 I found that whilst the letter and number keys worked as normal, control keys such as the arrow keys, spacebar, shift, capslock and tab did not work.
I use an app called "external keyboard helper pro" already, and I found that I could use it to program the keys to do what they ought to do in the first place, and I'm using my keyboard now. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is that in order to type a capital letter I have to type it twice.
I do think it's extraordinary that Google can release an update to Android that breaks a major function. It's even worse that they don't publicly acknowledge the issue.

Missing Space Key option
I'm having the exact same issues since updating my Nexus 7 to 4.3. I also own External Keyboard Helper Pro and have remapped most my keys. However I can't find the option to map my 'space' key. (Which would make this all rather redundant if I can't hit space....). Netwizuk, you said you were able to map your 'space' key?
Can you elaborate on how you achieved that? What option you chose?
Thanks!
I don't have a problem with the spacebar on mine. However, have you tried this?
In ekhp
- advanced settings
- customise keyboard mapping
- add new mapping
- with the cursor in the scancode field, hit the spacebar. This should enter the number '57' (don't know if it varies by keyboard)
- in the 'normal' field type 0x0020
- save
See if it works
I now have the new Nexus 7 FHD, and find that the keyboard works better (although I still need the re-mapping). May be something to do with processor speed.

My Fix (unfortunately)
Last night I was fed up with this whole bluetooth keyboard issue and I finally backed everything up, restored to 4.2.2, and now everything is perfect again. Took a while to get everything set back up, but honestly it was my only option. I'm happy I did, because now my battery lasts a week again (with light - medium usage) as opposed to the two days I got on 4.3 (that's a separate issue that I couldn't figure out either).
Hopefully you guys figure out a better way of doing things, although this is always an option. Good luck!
