I did a DIY digitizer replacement a month or so ago, and its been working great up until a few days ago. Now, when I go to touch one of the soft buttons or type on the keyboard, the phone "flips out" and starts registering inputs in all random spots, sometimes getting stuck on that spot. I am totally stumped.
I double checked and all the ribbon cables are seated and such, and tried flashing over to Modaco rom from Cyanogen (thinking it might be software)... no luck. Can't even replicate it consistently, it seems to have a mind of its own.
Any thoughts as to what is going on?
Well I know that it has been an issue for some people and the general idea is that if you push the power button and put the screen to sleep and then wake it back up 20 seconds or so later it will work again. I have to say to also wipe your screen clean as well, build up on the screen can cause wonky behavior as well. Good luck.
Mike
this sounds exactly like the glitch that all nexus ones have, stock ROM. just lock then unlock the screen and it fixes itself.
the word is that it will be fixed with the 2.2 update. fingers crossed.
I thought it was that issue I read as well, but the power button glitch-fix everyone speaks of doesn't work.
I actually used my pry-tools to unseat the digitizer from the rest of the phone and kinda let it dangle, and 90% of the issues disappeared.
I am wondering if it might be the digitizer pressing up against the metal backing thats causing it to ground out and cause these issues, since the original phone was held in by a foam-type adhesive which I don't have on it now.
that's very possible. the power button resets my glitch 100% of the time. so sounds like something else is going on with yours.

I don't think its the famous touchscreen issue that we've heard because it was reported to register a click few centimeters below the touch point. Here in this case, the guy says that it randomly registers clicks at different spots.

I hope that reboot fixes this problem....
I've given up on the task for now, went back to my iPhone 2G till I can figure this out... its definitely not software though... and the digitizer still registers accurately when I don't have it seated into the phone...
No issues here on cyanogen 5. 0. 6 I love this Rom and have 0, yes I said it zero issues..... running solid for almost a month.... sorry ya have them issues I hope ya get em figured out...
As others says, just a quick lock & unlock fixes this. No need to wait 20 secs, I do it right away. Power, power, slide to unlock and I'm back in business.
For me I'd say it happens maybe a couple times a week? What about other people?
On stock it happened like once a week.... for me
none on custom so far after 3 weeks
yeah a couple times a week is it for me too. I wonder if view identified the issue and fixed it in the update. I'm sure some Google employees experience the bug.
So I've had my Nexus One since release at the beginning of 2010, and I'm finally coming out to ask: does anyone else have occasional trouble with their touchscreen detecting touches at completely the wrong places? At random points while using the Browser (maybe once or twice a week) I'll be trying to scroll and I'll get a quick zoom instead. Also, if I touch about 1 inch above the Back/Menu/Home/Search keys, they will be recognized as those keys instead of touching the screen! This bug happens outside of Browser too (though it always seems to start there) and has been consistent across CM6, MM's Gingerbread Builds, and several other ROMs. It always goes away with a reboot, but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had similar problems
I'd bet 99% of Nexus owners have this problem. You don't have to reboot, just turn your screen off and on again to reset it.
It's a hardware problem, the touchscreen panel isn't very good in the Nexus One..
But, It's fine in the newer phones like G2 and Nexus S
yup I have the same issue not a major issue I think battery draining & memory has been my main issue at the moment.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878477
Since getting mine back from repair the problem occurs less often but is still there.

Same to you, I have this problem either.
I have swapped my n1 3 times and finally got one without this problem. I mean completely gone, not occur even once. So I suggest you swap it.
Same here. Yesterday, the half upper screen doesn't recoginze any input

Same here. My first one had the issue a couple times a day, the next phone was particularly bad with my screen screwing up every few minutes. This current phone hasn't had the issue in the month I've owned it.
Part numbers and the touchscreen panel part numbers are the exact same in the last two.phones.
This bug is a year old.
Amazingly I've never had that issue so I don't think its universal though my screen sometimes fails to respond at all but that'll go away after a minute or so.

It's not a bug, it's a hardware defect. There is no way to prevent this in the software.
I only seem to get it when on charge, and there is a thread about the same thing in the NS forum, so it's not just us.

Granted. However I can envisage a piece of software that cycles the screen off/on momentarily every few minutes that may in practical terms fix it.
My first N1 was only slightly effected by the screen fault, even after going back to HTC for a new power button. When the power button failed a second time I elected to go for a refurb on the second warranty return. Unfortunately the refurb is quite badly effected by the screen alignment fault.
Most annoying thing is when the alignment goes out, I have no choice but to use the power button to cycle it off. I am trying at all cost to avoid using the power button on my N1 to defer its inevitable next failure.
There's a fix for it
I can confirm that replacing Radio to "Korean Radio" solves this problem!
Verified in 4-5 different devices.

That's not entirely true... I'm on that radio and I have this issue from time to time.
As above, radio isn't a fix, can't think why it would be.

i avoid the power button too when i need to cycle the screen. i use cyanogen ROM which has the Zzz button in the drop down shade, which blacks out the screen. then just hit trackball to wake it back up. power button avoided!

There is an app in the market for a buck, it's called screen off. It comes with a widget or app and one of the choices is an invisible widget so if you don't want to see it you don't, (just remember where you put it)...........
I use it for shutting my screen down all the time for saving battery life.

I'm using the Lock widget to power down...it's free on the market! There's a transparent version in the Android theme section.
So I just booted up my new tab, started setting it up and it worked great. Started up a youtube video, then it locked up. Touchscreen stopped working, power buttons still work though. WTF? should I return it? It It turns on when I press the power button, but that its. Touchscreen is no responding
Lmao messed up the title : (
Is there a way to reboot it?
Try holding down the volume down(the left one) and the power button down for 5 seconds to force the tab to shut off. Then turn it on and see if the problem is still there. If so then return it and get a new one.

I've noticed this a few times on mine. A quick press of the power button usually fixed it.

I am having the same issue. I had a 32GB 10.1 from Amazon.com that worked flawlessly and then I saw the deal on eBay from Datavis for 529.00 so I ordered one from them. I never had this issue with the Amazon unit.
I wonder if I should return it or wait until something is addressed by Samsung.
Return it right away if it is freezing. That is only going to get worse.
Mine did that aswell, got so bad it would lock up then i hit the lock button and unlcok the tab is starts working then 1 minutes later same thing this happened for about a day or so then i called amazon they sent a replacement but then my tab just stopped doing that its been more than a week and hasn't done it since. im thinking of just returning the replacement back to amazon since the whole process or regetting apps is a pain.
I had to return mine, since it was not responding at all, no reboot or any power button presses would resolve it. It happened suddenly, before it was working just fine.
I'm on my 3rd (and final) Galaxy Tab... the two previous ones I had exhibited the same behavior. Unlock the screen, but the touchscreen doesn't work. It shouldn't do that, and if this 3rd device does that even once, it gets returned, I get my money back, and I'll stick with the Asus Transformer.
Hi! First post so sorry if its been asked before, is there any way to disable that annoying feature that makes the defy and others ignore a touch if held for so long? It makes some games unplayable (jet car stunts anyone?) Because you need to hold a button and you can't cos it ignores you after about 30secs, also is there any way I can boost touch sensitivity? I find the defy a bit shaky on recognising some touches, especially when typing, thanks for any help or infos
p.s I'm on CM7 cherry picks

When you touch and hold an area of the screen after about 30secs the touch will no longer register even though your thumb is still there. Apparantly its to stop the screen staying awake if you get water on it, I want to disable this, sorry hope it makes more sense now D:
Noone has a solution to this? I can't sprint on Nova 3 in multiplayer for long because it stops responding
then u go for the never turn off option in the display menu..screen will stay awake until u press the power button..hope it helps..defy's touch is too gud man..i nevr had any problem..

I really should explain better, thanks but that isn't what I mean, the screen will still be awake, just the touch will become "invalid" somehow if you hold the same spot too long, to demonstrate download multitouch visualiser from the market and hold 2 points, if you hold for long enough the touch disappears
I totally got your point as it happens to me too.. but occassionaly... i think its a hardware fault in the touchscreen.. like you said, it stops getting the point after 30 seconds, actually, the problem is that it starts reading your touch at another point on the screen, so you cant accelerare or sprint in jet car stunts and nova because when you tap the respective buttons, the touchscreen recognizes it as you are tapping somewhere else... i myself didnt found a solution to this problem, i just turn the phone on, wipe the screen and my fingers clean, and turn the phone on, sometimes its gone sometimes not.. and 30sec is too much.. my touch lasts for only 3-4 secs... hope we'll get the solution one day.. did you got your phone repaired? I got my touchscreen replaced few months ago but i think this problem was before too

No its an actual feature according to cyanogenmod forums to prevent "phantom input" caused by water on the screen, I dunno whether the digitizer handles this or its a driver, because if its software controlled theoretically it can be disabled

No just a fixed point or small movements, large movements is fine, its not practical to constantly move or let go during some games, and once it goes it doesn't reset instantly it goes crazy for a while, you try and press again and it "flickers" on and off if that makes sense
I've had that issue in 2.2 (Stock), CM7 and now, in CM9, as well...
A friend of mine made me aware of that (I hadn't and probably wouldn't have noticed).
I understand this happens only in Defies (not in Droids), so it shouldn't be impossible to avoid.

Actually some of the Droid series do, if you look on the webpage for jetcar stunts they've even identified it as something they can't fix with advice on how to avoid it, I think it was the Droid x. I'm desperate for a fix, hopefully this is not something in the stock kernal otherwise we need unlocked bootloader :/

I have had my Focus for one year now, and last night it shut its self off and will not turn back on. It has randomly shut off four or five times in the past two weeks, and I thought it was a hold button issue because I would go to lock my screen and nothing would happen, and then a few seconds later it would show the power down screen. I would always swipe up to navigate out of it but sometimes it would end up shutting off anyway. So now I can't get it to start up by pressing the hold button, but when I insert the battery it will show the Samsung screen for a few seconds and then shut down. Any Help ?

It is either the power button or the battery. Search the forum for "power button" and you'll get threads with similar issues as yours. In most cases it is the power button, though.
^ Do you really think its power button issue? Because once in a while when i press the power button the phone starts but will shut down after the samsung logo.

How many seconds after starting up does it shut down?
Do this test: when powered down, lean the phone so the power button is pointing to the ground and tap a few times on the phone (to unstuck the power button). Then connect the power from the outlet (to start up the phone). Try this a few times. If it starts up normally even once, then your problem is the power button.

Finally i got it fixed. It costed me around $30 US dollars. Service center guy told me that he did the following
1) Replaced ON/OFF Switch
2) Replaced charging connector which was burnt.
I recently bought and used Batteries from ebay.com and they might screwed the phone? no idea..
switch failure has nothing to do with dodgy batteries but just shoddy workmanship from sammy, much like the sgs3 which also equips another horrendously fragile on/off switch
by the way, did they replace just the internal microswitch or the switch as a whole, button and all?
