So, I'm going undecided - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On what phone to get. I'm looking at a GNex or the Razr M. I love everything about the M, except, it isn't a nexus honestly. But the Gnex's battery isn't so great I hear. So I lean towards the M.
But I digress
my question is, are the chances the M will get Ubuntu high or low? I'd take the battery life drain and the Samsung plasticy feel for all the cool dev stuffs.
Is the dev community really active for this?
Sent from my HTC Droid Incredible 2 with that Viper ICS using xda app-developers app

Fack, I didn't realize I was still in development, this may have been the wrong place to post this. My bad.
Sent from my HTC Droid Incredible 2 using xda app-developers app

I've owned both. Dev community for this phone is non-existent compared to gnex.
This phone itself is so much better than the gnex. Leaps and bounds on another level, they really don't compare. Battery life is insane, screen is beautiful, hardware/build quality is 10x better&more solid than gnex.
I am a crack-flasher (had the gs3; it got stolen) and the lack of roms fir this phone is NOT a deal-breaker because every other aspect of the phone is so superb.
Sent from my XT907 using xda premium

^^ Agreed. I also have both. Gnex was a cool phone but the M is a much better device where it really counts.
Sent from m Developer Edition RAZR M

Third agree. I had a SGS3 and it was to Damn big, I was worried about the resolution on this phone but I can't even tell a difference. I had a Gnex before my s SGS3 and the battery was pretty bad maybe 2 and some change of screen on time. On my M it's more like 6 or 7 or 2-3 days unplugged with 3-4 hours screen on. My SGS3 got 3 on a good day and good luck not plugging it in every night.
The m is a very solid phone of you want something smaller and powerful.
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2

Thread moved.
To chime in...
I had both as well. The GNEX's battery dies much MUCH faster in comparison with the M. Plus, the Gnex always lagged in the wrong places and at the wrong time for some reason. Just enough to annoy me. The M never lags... anywhere.

Well, it is a bit upsetting that the dev community is so small. But relative to the gnex, which has been out for at least a year, and is a google, it is expected lol.
I've had pretty terrible experience with Motorola and software/updates (had a droid X2) haha but if this is great stock then all I need is root and I should be great!
Ubuntu would be sick tho
I'm gonna go with the M and hope the dev

To be honest a lot of rom choices are cool, but honestly how many roms for the Gnex are the EXACT same thing with a different theme?
About updates, I think moto is better now that Google is behind them but it obviously isn't a pure Google device. But in all honesty I've had HTC, Samsung, and Motorola phones (even a BB, HTC titan, iPhone mixed in lol) and the one thing constant between them is they all update slow as heck because they don't make money off it. So ya any non Google device has relativity crap update times.
I'll probably keep the m until and Ubuntu phone is released provided it isn't over hyped like crazy.
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2

Glad to see swimguy is on board now
Get the M. Does the GNex have a battery? (Joke people, don't burn me)
Motoblur is too bad once a million bloat apps are frozen. Our ROM selection is slim but quality. All are daily drivers. I had the same dilemma. I figured I get the M and when I drop and break it, I could buy a gnex cheap to use till I replaced my M.

I just traded my Nexus for an M and couldn't be happier. Signal is much better and the quality of this phone was a big step up from my Nexus. I was a crack flasher but I'm happy with the setup I have on this phone stock.

Looks like I'll be getting the M today!
Thanks for the input, glad the community here is nice haha
Pretty stoked to get this phone now. How locked down is the consumer version out of curiosity?

We have a root exploit! And safe strap!....
No awesome kernels and and all that goodness. That's about it. We have enough to get by.
Sent from my XT907 using xda premium

I guess no new kernals is understandable haha since the M is about current with software for now lolol.
Do all the OG razr ROMs and exploits such port over easily?

Well there' no new kernels because we can't flash them. The bootloader is still locked unfortunately (unless you get a developer edition phone).

Ahhhhh, dang, wouldn't kexec help? The razr has it, shouldnt the M get it fairly easily?

Yes kexec is actually about to get a big jump. Hashcode just recently got the source for the jelly bean kernel for our qcomm devices(RAZR HD/M).

See, I got the phone because I figgured I'd be able to root it... turns out it isn't so simple with the Japanese version. Oh well... if you discount all the developer options, this is easily one of the most solid phones around. Long battery life, and it feels tough enough that I could chuck it at a wall... wouldn't try it, of course. Being waterproof is also nice.

Bootloaders not actually unlocked

The Droid X, Milestone etc bootloaders were not actually unlocked. It was a hoax. http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-bootloader-still-encrypted-developer-comes-clean
I don't see why so many are willing to put up with this. There are plenty of other good android phones out there. As long as Motorola is going to fight this, there will never be a truly safe way to flash custom roms/kernels on droid phones, and devs simply aren't going to invest the time necessary to develop much.
::: Sigh :::

I would recommend a Galaxy S. The bootloaders are unlocked and it now has a functional CM7 version. Plus, nothing beats the Super AMOLED screen.

I loved my Droid X when I first got it. Rooted it and had leaked Froyo running on it before OTA was available. After that there was not much more I could do with it. Bought a used Captivate on ebay. There are lots of custom ROMs and kernels to choose from. When September rolls around I hope there is a new Samsung phone available. No more Moto's for me.

Galaxy S phones are very solid, with a few mods, it will fly. Plus the bootloader is unlocked, if u are coming from the x, you will greatly appreciate this. I just picked up a thunderbolt and so far, i love it. Its crazy fast, LTE or not, and having the 256mb of extra ram really makes for a phone that never slows down, no matter what you are doing. My only complaint other than the battery being undersized, as HTC ALWAYS does, is the adreno 205, people with the mytouch or G2 will tell you its good. When voming from a galaxy s the GPU is the only thing that i dont think is better.

Attention those thinking about HTC SENSATION - dont do it!

So I got the sesnation yesterday for 24 hours on TMOB. Took it back today. What a dissapointment.
Once again my Atrix has trumped a device IMHO. First the Inspire then the SGS2 and now the Sensation
. I always thought I preferred Sense but after Atrix plus launcherPro, Sense feels so heavy! PLUS Atrix runs video so much more smoothly than the sensation. Also sound on the sensation was really low, especially the spealerphone. Whites are better and I think images clearer and brighter on the Atrix. Camera is marginally better on Sensation. Battery much worse on Sensation. GPS about the same. Internal memory is worse with same apps on Sensation. I don't know why. Screen size difference is marginal.
Forget what quadrant says, when I ran the same apps on both the load up time was practically the same.
I has the SGS2 for a couple of weeks and I think that's better than the Sensation but I think the Atrix, with its HDMI out, and peripherals (hacked!) Beats them both.
This device is a workhorse. It can take everything I have thrown at it.
In glad I stuck with the Atrix.

With the growing number of people the world over, loving the Atrix, surely Motorola will soon wakeup to them selves and unlock the bootloader when the Gingerbread upgrade is rolled out.
Also, Atrix with Launcher Pro... heavenly!!! (IMHO)

While the Russian model looks at you with that pretty screen, and has no idea what you just asked her. ; )

i'm definitely not bored with it yet!! the only thing i think would improve it is 4G. other than that, i'll ride it to the end..
I have the Inc now (upgraded from the droid back in late March) and its a nice phone, but I definitely wish I had something more current (which I will come November). From a hardware standpoint its a nice phone with moderate hardware but from a modding standpoint it's not the top of the list since its still locked (and can be bricked, like my original one which I had for a week) and the hardware is showing its age when it comes to new software like Sense 3.

Im contemplating getting the Droid 3 but man oh man is it hard. $450 for it? Idk. The incredible has served me very well, and it still has a ton of life in it. All I need to do is give it some body work... like a new chassis. I abused this thing way too much haha.

A good friend of mine just upgraded from the Incredible to the Incredible 2 and the only thing I like about it is the front facing camera. Other than that, it's MEH. The screen size is smaller than (or same size as) Fascinate, the speed doesn't seem to be any different, they are still using the LCD, crappy 1 Gig of phone memory, shipped with a small SD card... I'd take a stock, bloated Fascinate over the I2 any day... much less my fully customized, sweetly configured piece of artwork.
Bottom Line: The Fascinate is still one of the best out there, it's an amazing phone that is easy to use with great results. My kids watch movies on it all the time, the screen rocks! Games play flawlessly most of the time and it's just a very nice piece of hardware.
I do wish good ole VZW hadn't jumped away from the GalaxyS II. Now my future plans for an upgrade later this year are going to be put on indefinte hold because I really prefer Samsung.
its sad that the samsung phones tend to need modding to show their true potential, nice phones out-of-the-box, but nowhere near their potential till you start modding.
I am on hold for my upgrade as well to see what verizon will do, may have to change carriers if they dont come up with something from verizon to replace my fassy

Goodbye!

Today is a sad day for me, I no longer own an HTC Legend. I've moved on to a Galaxy S II, so if you own one of those you'll probably see me around there before long.
If one's thanks meter is a measure of their "success" on XDA, then I owe 80% of mine to the Legend community. You guys are awesome. I've learnt everything I know about Android through owning the Legend, and through the guys that are part of this small community.
I'm not gonna milk this any more than I already have, so farewell Legend!
All my projects for this device are officially ending, as I don't own a device that I can test it on.
Good luck furthering your Android career! Your projects around this bend were ones I greatly appreciated, but everyone's time must come for this device.
Have fun with the SGSII!

It seems that we both switched devices the same day i got my hands on a almost brand new Nexus S and its awesome
But I will also miss my old legend
Goodbye! Thank you for all your contributions to the Legend Subforum
I can really understand you that you leave us because of the broken USB of your Legend.
I am also thinking about getting a new Phone, but I'm a student and my car also eats a lot of money And right now my Legend has only a few scratches, the Battery "backholding door" is a bit broken (one hinge is missing there, broke because it fell down from my desk) and the Flashlight LED is broken for some reason i don't know.
And it really sucks that i've got no S-OFF anymore...
Another reason for buying a new phone is that i noticed that my legend is really slow, even compared to my Girlfriends Galaxy Ace...
Tnx for everything.

Cost and time basically. They cost too much, and they're too difficult to find. I'd rather have a nexus, but the galaxy s2 is a good phone too. If my legend wasn't broken I'd have waited it out, but a broken phone forced my hand. I wouldn't get a Motorola because they're such a pain to hack, and I have no experience with the evo. The general impression I get is that it's pretty decent, but don't take my word on it.

Ah fair enough, I think I'm gonna wait it out a bit longer, see what the S3 is like and what else comes out in the next few months as my contract runs out. Ah fair enough, I'll pass on the Moto I think. Wait and see I guess. How's the S2?

I really like it. It's quite surprising how much faster than the Legend it is actually. I never felt that my Legend was particularly slow, so it was a bit of a shock. Lol
My situation was a bit unfortunate, and if my Legend was still working I'd have waited it out too. But hey, such is life. Development on the S2 is pretty active, so hopefully I'll be happy with it for a while. I miss my Legend though, the S2 forums are almost too active -_-
Just wanted to say that I'm done with the Legend to. Was/Is a great phone but time flies.
Thanks for all the knowledge I've gained from this forum and I'm hoping to see you guys in some other threads.
