Backup and restore app - Xperia Z General

Have any of you tried the backup restore app bundled with the XZ? its appears to be similar t the TB but doesnt require root it backsup the application along with the data as well ... you can also select system apps to backup..

Good find. I will try it.

I tried it last night, didn't restore half of my apps (weird).
Sticking with Carbon until devs figure out how to enable root (and maybe even unlock bootloader) on locked down deviices.

Carbon works with the Z? I couldnt get it to work.

Backing up to what? Never could get carbon to work right backing up to cloud storage or sd card on any of my Xperia devices. Even the dev said there was an issue with Sony devices and the backup procedure carbon used.
The backup and restore app Sony includes has worked great for me on all my devices. Didn't backup account settings and stuff but for apps and sms/mms it's great.

I tried the backup and restore app but it would not allow me to backup apps which have user data stored...is this correct or something I am not doing correctly?

Works perfectly fine, you can back up the entire phone, including the internal memory storage and micro sd card. Takes forever because the USB interface is so sloooooooooooooow.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, you do this from Sony PC Companion PC Suite, to select manually.
I also see that these greyed out options you show from the phone app, are only available if you have an external micro sd card in the phone. Hope this helps

I made backup to external SD using the backup and restore app
then I upgraded to a rooted stock rom
I still have the folders (.semc-fullbackup) and (.semc-mtpbackuptransport) on the sdcards
but the app won't show anything to be restored
what can I do to restore them?
Thanks in advance

I successfully used this app twice to backup and restore my apps and their data. It's the only way to backup application data without root.
Sony PC Companion can only backup the content of the internal and external SD card (/storage/sdcard0 and /storage/sdcard1), not the internal app data (on the /data partition).
Important remark: it cannot restore paid apps, so you need to reinstall any paid app from Play Store, before restoring your backup. This way, the data of the paid apps will also be restored.

The worst part of this application is that it can't handle the HD photos of the contacts application. When restored, they become thumbnails

It does a decent job in app and data restoration, but I was mentioning about the contacts restore. It doesn't handle the HD photos, instead restores as 96x96 pixel photos.

Oh, and another one is that we can't restore a selected application. In order to restore a single application in from the backup, you have to restore fully. Earlier version (Xperia S) had this feature.

you can use a application like MyBackup

Or if you have root you can use titanium backup

so what things should be backedup before upgration. M new to android. So would love to here it from experienced ppl

99% of the time nothing will be lost with updating firmware/android.
if you have google sync on it will save your contacts and calendar. There is google backup it will restore the installed apps, not the data (don't know why).
so if something goes wrong you will loose your savedata, sms and bookmarks, nothing on your SD.
You can make a backup of sms with free apps like:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore (i use this one)
or paid apps like MyBackup

everything on your Extern SD card will be remained, not sure of the internal SD space. i never did a wipe on the phone, even after updating through Kies

Kies asks you if you want to make a backup just before it starts flashing the new firmware. In my case everything was backed up: contacts, call log, sms, mails, settings, data partition, ... the whole backup is around 2GB. I think that should include everything. And for the worst case scenario, Google can backup your stuff, except the App Data (Savegames ...).
Best way to backup which makes a perfect image of what you had before is by using Clockworkmod recovery. However this recovers root. With this method, a restore will turn the phone back to 100% how it was before you flashed.
The next backup method is Titanium backup. It also requires root if you want it to back everything up. This backs up your data, settings and apps. However, if you want to restore, it restores by installing/copying the items back into the phone, which means sometimes the apps are not how they were before. Also, the free version requires you to manually click through each restore, which takes a long time if you have many apps.
The final method is through Kies, but I believe it just restores your settings, contacts and images. I don't think it backs up the apps.
I did an OTA FW update some days ago without any backup ... ok, a little risk ... everything was fine after the update, NO data lost, everything was still there, mails, savegames, contacts, etc..

Does anyone else find it very time consuming to have to reinstall all of your data after every rom wipe? I find my self never leaving a rom for awhile because of the whole set up process including the Google set up.
It takes me an hour.

I suppose Ti is best, but I haven't seen a ics friendly one available on the open seas
Nandroid? I only have 1 one my phone and thats 2.3.3 stock.
They take long to make, then they just sit there wasting space. Its not like you can just go back to them lime nothing, because by that time they'll be outdated.

Titanium is definitely ics friendly. If you have pro (or on free.. idk), set up filters with your must have apps. When you clear data ans flash a new rom, it will verify your TB account and restore settings, including filters. Just toggle the filter and do a batch restore. I was in the same boat you were til I started doing this.
And yes, TB also has a feature to restore apps or data, extracting from a nandroid backup.
•°NS4G • ICS°•
Or you could use es file explorer. Just go to the app manager button on the central screen, by pressing it it shows up all ur apps. Choose which ones you want and back them up. After flashing just restore using file explorer in the same manner...
The apps can also be found on the sdcard under backups/apps.
Astrofile manager does exactly the same job.. your pick.

Another annoying thing Google doesn't add to OS besides a restart option is a built in file explorer

Wrong. Even the free one lets you create a flashable zip.
Moreover, you could make it build as a regular update.zip or even make it install as a system app or an user app.

Noob question...flashed phone for first time yesterday and performed a backup using titanium free. When I flash a new rom don't you usually have to wipe data first? Would this not wipe the backup from your phone?
Thanks in advance!
It stores a copy in a folder called TitaniumBackup. If you wipe the SD card (or storage for us) that is different.
It is a hassle having to reinstall an app like Chase that requires a confirmation text. TB (Pro for me) makes restoring login info, etc a snap. Worth the $.

Noob replying to a noob (so pardon me, if i stumble):
When flashing a new ROM, you wipe - system, dalvik cache, data and boot ( perhaps not reqd.) Wiping SD card not required when installing new ROMs, unless it's the first time, and you're putting CWR on a Nexus S... However, some developers do recommending a full SD Card wipe as well. I assume you copy the Titanium backup folders to your PC, and copy it back before restoring.. Haven't tried that yet..
---------- Post added at 11:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:49 PM ----------
Probably will have to buy Pro, since it's getting to be a pain to restore my apps, with the permissions for each one...
Somehow, TiBackup doesn't seem to restore my homescreen settings, though I remember reading somewhere that it should do that as well..
Also, learnt the hardway not to try restoring Call logs and Messages when moving from a GB ROM to an ICS ROM... Boot loops with 2 ICS roms (Nexusbeam and Brainmaster's )
So, what all can you restore using TiB with your eyes closed?
I am still new to this phone, but with the Evo we had a zip file that wiped the system, data, cache, etc instead of remembering which ones to wipe. Maybe there is something like that for the Nexus?
I only restore apps, so I am not much help outside of that. With TB Pro all you have to do is click batch and restore all the apps with data automatically while you sit there and wait. I generally restore user apps only, maybe someone else can chime in with advice on restoring settings?
There is also an option to save backups on your drop box account, but I don't.
I am a flashaholic, one of the reasons I bought a used NS4G was because I was bored with the Evo. Titanium Backup (Pro) makes it fast and easy to restore apps and data when flashing new ROMs.

Data Backup on DHD

Hi,
I'm going to venture into the world of Custom ROMs for the first time, and before starting I wanted to take a data backup, mainly Contacts, Messages, Photos, Copilot Maps, HTC Location Data, etc
Is there an app that can achieve this for me?
Note: I have an unrooted phone & need an app that'll work in unrooted mode.
The reason for the above is that to Root my phone via AAHK, AAHK needs to downgrade my build first (and that means full wipe).
Contacts are backed up online on Google. for SMS, use SMS BAckup & Restore. I started writing small tutorial on my site, not finished yet, but I covered rooting and backing up: http://projects.lanik.org/AndroidProjectROMs.htm
cheers,
D.
You can use My Backup Pro, they have a free (time trial) version. In your case you will only use it for one day I'm guessing.
You need to install it again after you root your phone in order to restore your files.

After you get root, the best app to go to is TitaniumBackup. They also have a free version.

That's true. You don't need any app to back up ur contacts. All u need to do is setup a gmail account, and then your contacts will sync automatically with ur account!
As for Titanium Backup, you can only use it if you are rooted. In the OP case TB doesn't work. He needs to use an app that doesn't require root. My Backup Pro will do (they have a free time trial edition)

Agreed... As above, I only use gmail to backup my contacts and calendar... As for other data, I use MyBackup Pro... Never tried titanium backup though because mybackup pro works for me just fine.
I've just gone through this process myself today. I purchased the My Backup Pro app and backed up my Apps and my Data to my SD card.
If you choose to use this App, do the following after downloading it:
Backup your data and your Apps to your SD card.
After flashing a new ROM, don't panic!
Log into your google account, go to the marketplace and download My Backup Pro again and open the App.
Press on restore and then restore your Data and your Apps.
The App also allows you to move Apps to AS card to free up internal phone storage space.

However, if you only have the Time Trial version, you can download Titanium Backup (Free Version). I have been using TB (though Paid version) for a long time. I'm happy with it.

Best backup app without root?

Just a quick question... I want to hard reset and then flash the new firmware, what's the best backup app?
I especially dont want to lose whatsapp stuff (logs and pictures) and the sms (and of course all the apps installed).

Well, for instance...
Whatsapp does a backup of the logs on the internal memory, so is it possible to copy these files on the sdcard, wipe, and then copy back to internal? Does that work?
The phone settings and apps, if im not mistaken, are also saved on the gmail account.
And the sms... kies (which sucks) does backup them.
So it shouldnt be impossible for an app to do what i just said... or am i wrong?
Thanks.
