Am I doing something wrong? I've restored the calls using a special program that makes its own backup, but I'd rather do it all from within TB if that was possible.
I've restored all of the green items and rebooted, but the logs did not come back.
I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that TB backs up call logs. As much as the developer maintains it you'd think he would build that in, but I'm not aware of such a feature.
Called logs are part of 'system data', which I don't think is a 'green item' in TB. Try restoring all system data. Also, if you are going from one version of Android to another, you may have to enable "migrate system data" option in TB's preferences.
"Dialer Storage" is the item that holds your call logs and sms/mms messages
It backs up my call logs...
Also, this would be better in q & a

My logs are restored when I use restore all apps and system data. You have to be careful about doing that between firmware versions.

Totally agree with this^^^^. More times than not it causes problems.
The "red stuff" its ok to restore data for. At least for me. But things like settings I usually do manually

I use both this and TB. Personally I like MyBackup for backup and restore of SMS, MMS, and call logs. TB I use for restoring individual applications and their data. But I used both to backup everything just in case one of them fails to backup and/or restore something.
Hi,
I'm going to venture into the world of Custom ROMs for the first time, and before starting I wanted to take a data backup, mainly Contacts, Messages, Photos, Copilot Maps, HTC Location Data, etc
Is there an app that can achieve this for me?
Note: I have an unrooted phone & need an app that'll work in unrooted mode.
The reason for the above is that to Root my phone via AAHK, AAHK needs to downgrade my build first (and that means full wipe).
Contacts are backed up online on Google. for SMS, use SMS BAckup & Restore. I started writing small tutorial on my site, not finished yet, but I covered rooting and backing up: http://projects.lanik.org/AndroidProjectROMs.htm
cheers,
D.
You can use My Backup Pro, they have a free (time trial) version. In your case you will only use it for one day I'm guessing.
You need to install it again after you root your phone in order to restore your files.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup
After you get root, the best app to go to is TitaniumBackup. They also have a free version.

As for your contacts and SMS, dalanik (post above) got you covered
Go backup.. its free

That's true. You don't need any app to back up ur contacts. All u need to do is setup a gmail account, and then your contacts will sync automatically with ur account!
As for Titanium Backup, you can only use it if you are rooted. In the OP case TB doesn't work. He needs to use an app that doesn't require root. My Backup Pro will do (they have a free time trial edition)

To backup SMS & MMS I recommend message sync.
Agreed... As above, I only use gmail to backup my contacts and calendar... As for other data, I use MyBackup Pro... Never tried titanium backup though because mybackup pro works for me just fine.
I've just gone through this process myself today. I purchased the My Backup Pro app and backed up my Apps and my Data to my SD card.
If you choose to use this App, do the following after downloading it:
Backup your data and your Apps to your SD card.
After flashing a new ROM, don't panic!
Log into your google account, go to the marketplace and download My Backup Pro again and open the App.
Press on restore and then restore your Data and your Apps.
The App also allows you to move Apps to AS card to free up internal phone storage space.

If you have rooted your device, you can continue using My Backup Pro; especially if you have purchased the paid version.
However, if you only have the Time Trial version, you can download Titanium Backup (Free Version). I have been using TB (though Paid version) for a long time. I'm happy with it.
Just a quick question... I want to hard reset and then flash the new firmware, what's the best backup app?
I especially dont want to lose whatsapp stuff (logs and pictures) and the sms (and of course all the apps installed).
Is there a way to do so without root? Thanks in advance.
It seems you are asking for the impossible.
The apps needed for those backups needs Root Access esp. for the case of Titanium Backup

Well, for instance...
Whatsapp does a backup of the logs on the internal memory, so is it possible to copy these files on the sdcard, wipe, and then copy back to internal? Does that work?
The phone settings and apps, if im not mistaken, are also saved on the gmail account.
And the sms... kies (which sucks) does backup them.
So it shouldnt be impossible for an app to do what i just said... or am i wrong?
Thanks.
Doesn't carbon work without root?

Try Superbackup application. It can take backup of your applications & message. Just check.

Don't know if this is an Omnirom 4.4 problem or an app problem.
I backup all SMS using the app but when I restore them they don't appear in the messaging app.
If the app is open I can see the messages start to appear but when I exit out of it and go back in the messages are all gone.
If I restore them again it just tells me all the saved messages are duplicates so I'm guessing its saving the messages to the phone like it's meant to.
New messages all work fine and they are all there to view with no problems.
If anyone can give me ay suggestions it would be very helpful.
I have tried this in other messaging apps and I get the same results.

I have never used SMS Backup+ - but Ritesh Sahu's "SMS Backup and Restore" works for me.
The restore process only works with backup/restore apps that are KitKat aware.

Yeah, same here. However, I could restore SMS from Titanium Backup.
Doing that triggered a 'do you want to make Titanium Backup your standard SMS app' query for Every restored SMS. After a few I agreed to.
I'm guessing it's some new SMS app standard that SMS backup+ hasn't implemented yet. I've mailed that developer about it, but it looks like it's going to be a problem for makers of SMS backup apps... Unless a workaround specifically for them will be found.

Yup. Google announced this change to SMS well in advance of KitKat - http://phandroid.com/2013/10/14/sms-changes-coming-to-android-4-4-kitkat/
I m getting the exact same problem with SMSBackup&Restore on OmniROM 2014-07-28.
I managed to resolve this problem by enabling the "Write SMS/MMS" option in "Apps permissions" under System - Apps - "SMS Backup+".
I'm currently running CM10.1.3 (Android 4.2.2) and I'm having problems transferring messages when flashing any 4.4 ROMs. I tried numerous apps like SMS Backup, Titanium, My Backup Pro but none are restoring my SMS messages (not too bothered about MMS). I've tried ROMs with both Hangouts and other message apps and clearing said caches after restoring but still nothing.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you sure about Titanium Backup? I always use it to restore message!
Try XML backup with it.
Open Titanium Backup, go to MENU on the top right corner, then scroll down to Backup data to XML, then choose Message (SMS & MMS).
Then when you want to restore them use the Restore data from XML.
It works flawlessly countless time, at least for me.

One question, since you used it to restore sms's in kitkat. Did you need to set titanium backup as default SMS app?
App which I used "SMS Backup&Restore" needed to be set as default SMS app before restoring.

Nope. Titanium handled the restoring process independently.
