I just got my Nexus 4 not long ago. Everything is running great and smooth. The only thing keep me worry is my mobile data connection will suddenly drop. By suddenly drop, I mean I will have empty signal and bar ( empty triangle). However, it will back to normal in less than 30 seconds. It happens like average saying 4 times a day.
What I did to try to solve the issue myself.
I check the APN. I have all the correct APN based on the T-mobile APN thread from their website. FYI, you can find it here http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1979
I have micro sim card from T-mobile. I did not make or cut one. I'm also not on Tmobile prepaid. I have regular T-mobile plan.
Anyone experience anything like this? I saw many thread like data gray bar...low signal, slow data connection...but nothing like mine empty triangle, and back to normal in very short second...
Need some help and greatly appreciated. !!
Weird. I just started having the same issue., I'm on at&t though. Its really annoying. I tried clearing the cache and dalvik but had no luck. I'm considering reflashing my rom or upgrading the radio..
I'm on stock with no root. I will monitor a few more days before I RMA the device...but I doubt the second device will make any differences...No one sure it's a software issue or a hardware issue. My black triangle get back to connection pretty quick, but still annoying to lose all the data connection suddenly.
Are you having any issues with wi-fi?

What kind of Wifi problem are you talking about? Slow connection? or when you turn on wifi, mobile data turn gray?
I don't think I have Wifi problem (which I just turn on again) I actually set up all of my phone app the first time I got my phone. I download around 80
apps without any problem, and with no slowing speed. I did not check off the optimize Wifi box tho. I didn't run into wifi issue, so I did not check off
that box, although some ppl suggest that not to optimize the Wifi issue. The only big problem I have it's still the mobile data connection suddenly
go off, and go back on in a very short time. I can't imagine what will happen if I'm on a important call or using GPS navigation while suddenly the
mobile data go off...
What's your problem?
for more information about my phone, I have S/N: 310 K
stock, no root, 4.2.2, with micro sim card directly from T-mobile.
Bump =''[
Yep same problem here. All my signal bars will go gray and have no connection. I also get the empty triangle. Annoying as hell. I'm on stock JB 4.2.2 on straight talk.

I have not run into this problem yet but was messing around with my APN tonight and settled on this one and have had no problems with it, going from a "battery saving" HSPA:10 to HSPA+:15 when using data, watched it switch when using speed test. But here is my APN hopefully this can help you for AT&T specific problems. I came off the samsung galaxy s2 this week and switched to the nexus 4 and have had no problems thus far.

Too bad I have T-mobile...=''[
I have similar issues with my N4 running T-Mobile prepaid. I can get it, but it cuts in and out often. Wifi not an issue. I'm running CM10. I'm in an OK service area too. Cuts in and out frequently.
I guess I have the same issue, I'll have a blue triangle with no data activity (no small arrow head in either direction) even after trying to use Google search; it will be 15-30 seconds after hitting enter before any activity happens.
Im rooted, but running stock.
I already request for a replacement. Will update soon, but I doubt the new device will be different.

Hi all, new member to the forums but have used the knowledge here before many times.
I bought an unlocked Bell HTC Legend and have successfully used it on AT&T until encountering major issues yesterday. The phone started to lose signal, flopping between gsm, edge, 3g, and nothing. Then it started randomly restarting over and over again. Then I lost signal completely and it was telling me to insert a sim card when i would go into check the APN settings. Wouldn't give the error on the main screen when there is actually no sim in the phone, would just say no service. I took the sim out of the phone and tried it in my Nokia and it worked perfectly fine.
Heard issues from others about using the Bell ROM with AT&T so I proceeded to try and flash the phone with the generic WWE ROM to try and fix it. Was able to create a gold card after multiple attempts but could never get the phone to stay connected to HTC sync and the computer as it would disconnect when running the ROM .exe file. Outside of running the ROM .exe it would connect to the PC fine. Tried to update the drivers on the phone because i'm running windows 7 x64 but it wouldn't let me load the vista x64 drivers, just kept telling me that the driver loaded was the latest and correct.
I factory reset the phone as a last attempt and that worked for a little bit but then the signal errors happened again and the phone would show full bars and the 'H' but no data would be uploading or downloading most of the time. It had detected and latched onto a signal i guess but wouldn't consistently transfer data. I messed around with the APN settings again and now its resarting itself again and showing no signal most of the time.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point. It seems like a phone issue not so much the network or the sim. Not sure if its a battery contact or sim contact issue? I'd like to try and get the phone to stay connected so I can flash the ROM and see if that works.
Any help or past experience would be helpful. I feel like i've tried everything and searched everywhere for answers.
Thanks.

as far as i know the bars show signal strength of the GSM and not necessarily of the data quality. i hav the same issu ( showing bars but no data ) in some areas that are well covered by G2 but poor by G3 .
this brings me to the next question :
is data and pnone impaired by this problem? or only data ?
also it could be a fiscal problem, maybe the antenna is having trouble ?
good luck
The phone and data are affected.
I was finally able to flash it to the generic 1.31 WWE ROM by updating the windows device drivers while the program was trying to install the ROM. Found that info reading through all the comments in the downgrade thread.
The phone is still having issues keeping a connection though. It pulled the APN info off the sim but its not the same info I was using before when I manually entered the AT&T settings i've found searching the net. Its now reads this:
Name: MediaNet
APN: same
Proxy: same
Port: 80
Username: same
Password: *******
Server: Not Set
MMSC: same
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32
MMS Port: 8080
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN Type: *
The phone connected for a while but it was intermitent. I entered the other AT&T APN settings i've found on the web and those didn't work right either, connection kept dropping.
I don't know what is going on. I'm guessing its a bad phone or bad sim? Antenna or something?
Update: I'm using the default APN settings it pulled off the sim and it seems to be working ok for the moment. Freaking phone.
Update 2: Installed a version of Swype, had pinch to zoom and lag issues, restarted the phone, connnection became crap. Uninstalled swype, seemed to work but its still have connection issues. Shows connection and bars and data going up but nothing coming in. Goes in and out of connection.
Just for those following along.... I guess I should try and contact HTC.
Found this very interesting thread:

2g/3g switching issue w/ Andriod? Is there a better ROM out there that will avoid this? My wives Samsung Galaxy doesn't have this issue (knock on wood).
It is true the antenna is in the bottom cover of the phone
and now i remember t had some issues as well with the reception
i used WD40 to clean the contact points from the phone and the cover
i did not spray it directly but used a point of a cloth to put it on the right places and never had trouble again

I wouldn't use WD40, it leaves a residue behind...
If you want to clean those contacts, a simple eraser works fine.
I don't know if this was even tried, couldn't find anything while I searched. But if you're on tmobile, they have different data service for windows and android. I was gonna try my friends G2 for the weekend so I called saying I was gonna try a G2 and they switched my data service to the Android data and for 2 days straight I haven't had any problems with dropped data connection. this is a first for me might just be a weird coincidence though.. oh well, just thought I'd let people know.
I traded for my HD2, still getting data drops even though I have an 'android data plan'

You understand that with the data plan you can manually change the apn settings to settings for "other plans" right?
For example, default is epc.tmobile.com, but you can also use wap.voicestream.com and internet2.voicestream.com. There are also others, but these are the more common ones.
APN Settings
Hi folks,
Would you know if these settings apply to UK or are they different. At the momment my APN settings are:
Name: T-Mobile Internet
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
All other fields blank
With these settings my connection keeps dropping. However my wi-fi is perfect so I know internet works.
Thanks guys
A quick background:
- I have an International Note - factory unlocked
- I signed up with Straight Talk few days ago - ordered the AT&T SIM Card
- Voice, text messaging and MMS works
- I am in Northern California
Problem is, the data connection is very UNSTABLE. I will have full bar, can browse the web and then.... BOOM! Suddenly no data, even though my phone show 3G and full bar. The only fix? Turn ON Airplane Mode, Turn it OFF or REBOOT, which is clunky and time consuming at best, especially when you are out and about.
This is not just an annoyance, but makes the phone almost unusable since I need data for my Exchange email, Google Navigation, etc. I DO NOT use the Note for tethering.
My APN is as folllow:
APN 1...
Name: Internet
APN: att.mvno
APN type: internet
APN type: default
APN 2...
Name: MMS
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
APN type: mms
Fast Dormancy: Disabled
For those who use Straight Talk, could you tell me:
1). If you experiences the above
2). Where you are at
3). What APN do you use
4). Do you enable "Fast Dormancy"?
I am trying to figure it out if this is my Note or just ST flaking in my area.
I had the same problem with fast dormancy disabled so ok re-enabled it and it has been fine since.

Same issues here with an att sim and tried both single apn settings that came with straight talk and the two separate ones as you have. Also tried both fast dormancy enabled and disabled with same sketchy results. My location is Milwaukee, WI. Seems prone to disconnect right right after I connect to the market. Turning on and off the data connection re-establishes the connection though.

I used to have the OP's issue constantly here in Southern California too until I re-enabled Fast Dormancy and it's been pretty good since for me as well. Also have better luck with the 2 separate APN's that you're using.

That's interesting... it seems that I have to ENABLE Fast Dormancy for a stable data connection. I will try that and will update here.
I wonder if it has something to do with which tower I am connecting to...
Its really odd because everywhere I read AT&T doesnt support fast dormancy..
I still think its something at&t does to prepaid because my gf's SGS2 doesnt have that problem and I dont seem to notice it when I used her sim card..I'm on ICS and theres no way to turn fast dormancy off or on.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe some areas had upgraded equipment that supports it or something? Like you one of the first things I did was disable it per the instructions in the ST thread and never tried with it enabled until recently just out of curiosity.

I'm in the sacramento area, using the same settings with great results. Occasionally I have to toggle data, maybe once every two weeks, but not too inconvenient.

I turned ON Fast Dormancy and I was getting even unstable data, so I turned it OFF.
I was driving to another city today for lunch and I noticed my data connection was pretty stable. I had been doing a lot of testing: Google Maps, Email, Pulse News app, etc.
However, one thing is consistent: everytime I open Android Market (Google Play now), it will load UP until where I want to DOWNLOAD an APP (for testing - small apps - less than 2 Mb), the data connection shuts off....same problem as what I posted above.
I tried doing so about 4 times in 3 different location: home, work and lunch place, each location is about 5 miles apart. Same results.
Is Straight Talk monitoring and BLOCKING app download?
I'm using straight talk on my gf's S2 with tethering and its blazing fast (6 Mbps down and 1.1 Mbps up) and stable right now. Although I'm in Michigan atm (heading to California tomorrow). I plan to switch from AT&T's price gouging plan to straight talk when I get back so I'll let you guys know how it is in Modesto.
I have the same issue with market and sporadically, otherwise.
I don't think this is a straight talk thing. It doesn't make sense.

But if I access Android Market using Wifi, it NEVER FAILED. I access it using office network, home network, Clear HotSpot and Barnes and Nobles WiFi.
With ST, I got "No connection" after attempting to download.
Yeah, doesn't make sense, but this is what I found after numerous testing today...

Even when my data connection used to be flaky with Fast Dormancy disabled before I re-enabled it, I was always able to install & update apps from the Market. The weird thing is that it was pretty much only NON-Google apps that gave me problems with the data dropping out.
I would call ST Tech Support tomorrow if I were you and see if they can check your account and stuff.

I am in Northern California as well, Fremont to be exact. I have not noticed any problems with data while out and about here. I use the exact setting as posted in post 1 in this thread.
While at home, I just turned off wifi, and tried to connect to the Play store, No Connection - Retry. So I turned on/off Flight Mode, went back to the Play store, and was able to download a couple of things no problem.
This is pretty the same thing that would happen to me on my last Android phone, so maybe it is more of a Android thing than it is a Straight Talk thing.
Other than this, my Straight Talk data connection seems to be fine when I'm out and about.

The thing that intrigued me is that this issue doesn't happen to my 3 other Android phone, which are running on At&t, Verizon and Virgin Mobile.

Same here. I've been using nothing but Android since the G1 and I've never had these issues until the Note on ST, so I don't think that it's an Android OS issue UNLESS Samsung has a bug in the OS on the Note.
When I have time I'll do a search in the Galaxy Nexus forum or something to see if there are any problems with people on ST there...

It works pretty well, but I do see the signal get lost every once in a while. I just wait a sec and it reconnects.
I had inter.. data connect issues for the longest time..i would constantly have data stop and have to turn on and off airplane mode to get it back..
market would fail to load etc
i changed to a single APN using the settings in this post and my data hasnt dropped out since..

While custom rom'ing I was using Straight Talks APN settings w/ fast dormancy off and had no problems in downtown Chicago and on the north side around Wrigleyville where I reside.
W/ that said I installed the Chinese ICS Leak when it first came out and I had worse signals than on the GB rom's. Could have been the radio I flashed.
So while I wait for AT&T level 3 support to look into this and get back to me, thought I would see if anyone else has seen this issue. I had my original S4 stock rooted since it came out and never had an issue. Night before I was traveling it starts rebooting randomly and when I wake up the next morning it was dead. I was sent a refurb S4 (MF3) and again rooted it, did my usual Titanium freeze of same bloat as previous phone. Things were fine for a week and then I found out I could no longer send or receive MMS. I get an error that it is expired or not available. Spent a few hours on the phone with support, they had me change sim card (I just used my sim with replacement phone instead of the one they sent with it.) That did not fix it. If I power the phone off and back on I can usually get 1 MMS before it fails again. Did a factory reset, it worked for a few test MMS they sent and then stopped working. So they sent another refurb phone. I get it yesterday (MF3 again lucky me) and root it, didn't freeze anything and test it. Everything is working good for a few hours, sent and received like 20 pics to verify it. Then after a few hours, I can no longer send/receive them again. Internet/data works fine on the phone when the MMS issues happen. The MMS issue occurs whether sending or receiving from/to all 4 main US providers so it's not provider specific either.
APN is the default. They say my account is fine. The other 2 phones (S4 and S3 both not rooted) on my account work fine, though they are in a different state than I am. I tested while I was out running errands to make sure it wasn't a tower issue. Tech support provisioned my phone again several times. At this point I am out of ideas. Multiple sim cards and phones and the same issue. Doesn't make sense to me that power cycling or factory reset usually fixes it for a few minutes to an hour and then it stops again. So far they haven't made me go to a service center. Have a feeling if I go there they will try and blame it on being rooted when that isn't the issue.
Any ideas of what else I can try while I wait?

Well it's certainly good you've troubleshooted many different possibilities. Sounds odd to me under the circumstances that the issue persists. I assume you have tried different content when testing these MMs? (i.e. not sending the same picture or message, but different variations or pictures)?
It makes no viable sense why this would be occurring especially based on all of your testing. Does this issue occur only on cellular connection and/or wifi?
Bad SIM card?

Well, i'm certainly intrigued to know how you fix it. Keep us updated.
So I am still waiting on AT&T to actually do something to resolve this. They claim level 3 is looking into it and claim they can't update my case to have level 3 support call me. In the meantime it looks like I have found a workaround to resolve my issue. Currently my phone has the default phone APN. I added a 2nd APN with the following values:
Name: Cingular MMS
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: mms
I saved it and so far I have been able to send/receive MMS again for the last 11 hours. That is the longest it has worked since I started having issues. Now if level 3 support ever calls me I can tell them what I did so they can try and figure out why the normal APN is not working for me.
I had quite similar issues sending and receiving MMS messages this week, turned out to be Adblock Plus stopping pictures from being sent/received through port 80. Disabled Adblock temporarily, and MMS worked perfectly. Perhaps you are in the same boat? Or maybe another application blocking the ports? Complete shot in the dark here, as I am a very new owner of the S4.

I do (well did) have Adblock Plus installed. Just deleted my workaround APN and uninstalled Adblock Plus for now to test. So far it works, but I will give it a few hours to test some more.
Thanks
Checked out the forums for adblock plus and there are reports of this issue going back to November 2012. Looks like this was definitely my issue.
adblock causes problems on port 80 for MMS, your provider should have a few ports to chose from. Mine being with Rogers, i chose port 8080 in APN settings.
This fixed my issue permanently.
(Rogers had replaced the phone twice thinking it was a hardware issue)
Haven't had this problem before or even heard of it. My phone showed normal data signal all day today, but every app said I had no connection. It even looked like data was uploading/downloading as the arrows were popping up from time to time. I tried a few reboots but still having the problem.
I'm on Vanilla Rootbox, but haven't had any problems until today. Nothing has changed on my phone in weeks.
Any ideas?
those bars arent for data connections, they are for your phone connection. i assume phone calls are alright? have you called your provider to check if they are having data issues?

Well, the H+ and the up and down arrow are for data aren't they?
I haven't called because I'm on AT&T gophone and they don't have much in the way of customer service. They won't help much once they see you're on a Nexus 4, which they don't sell.

the H+ and H show which data network you are connected to. and the up/down arrows show if the phone is(or trying to) send/receive data. neither of which tell you if you are actually getting data flow. normally, you would call your provider in this situation. if they tell you that you service is fine, ask them to refresh your connection.
and the issue of you not getting help because youre on a nexus 4 doesnt make much sense. they want youy to pay for the service, they dont make much money off the phone. but if you feel like that about their service, why are you still with them? there are better companies to use, and are inexpensive.

the H+ and H show which data network you are connected to. and the up/down arrows show if the phone is(or trying to) send/receive data. neither of which tell you if you are actually getting data flow. normally, you would call your provider in this situation. if they tell you that you service is fine, ask them to refresh your connection.

Well I've dealt with them a few times. That's just been my experience. I'll try and call them. I'm still with them because generally I can figure out what the problem is. In my experience, it's all the junk i've done to the phone, rather than service being down. Thank you for the suggestion.

last month, on tmobile, i was connected to tmobiles towers, bars were blue, not gray(so connected to googles servers), but i wasnt getting a data flow. i called tmobile and they told me that they werent having any issues. so i asked them to refresh my data service. they had me power down for 3 minutes while they disconnected and reconnected my service. once i powered back on, i had a data flow again.
Check to make sure you entered correct APN settings or download a rom with APNs preloaded.
Can you browse the internet at all?

Yes, I just checked and I can access internet via my broswer, although it was super slow! I didn't check that yesterday. So it looks like my data is being slow. I had this problem originally when I had bad APN settings. I do have the correct APNs though. Maybe I need to update them. I'll call for a refresh and see if that helps.
Normally when i boot a rom for the first time data works but is so slow it's unusable also . These are the go phone apns i use to get it working again.
Name Att
apn wap.cingular
username [email protected]
mmsc http://mmsc.cingular.com
mms proxy wireless.cingular.com
port 80
310
410
apn type default,supl,mms
Make sure all other fields are blank this is were the slow data occurs for me if the other Fields have something in them.

Thanks all. I forgot the stupid APNs will work for a few weeks then go to super slow data speeds. I did reformat a few weeks ago and haven't done anything to my APNs. I just don't get why they work fine for a few weeks then slow down. Resetting my APNs to the above should work, I think that's the one I was using before.
Got it working again?

For a few days, yes, today MMS stopped working. I'm really confused at why certain APNs will work for a period of time then just stop working. The default APN worked for over 2 weeks, then went to super slow speeds. The latest one I updated too, just above, worked for a few days, not I can't send or receive MMS.
I think the one that worked for me before had 2 setups. One for data, and one for MMS. I'm going to set that back up now.

Yeah try setting 2 apns one for data other for MMS. I've used that method before and seems to work fine. But then again I've never had issues to begin with.
