My nexus 4 battery compared to my Nexus 7 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know its apples to oranges but hear me out.
I have nexus 4 and Nexus 7 both on 4.2.2 and both on the latest Motley kernels. Both are rooted and that's it. neither is over clocked and both have the same exact apps installed sans tablet apps on the N4 so my N4 has less apps installed than my N7.
i charge both devices over night. both devices are set to use WIFI and WIFI is set to ALWAYS ON even during SLEEP.
i unplug both devices and leave the N7 at home.
take th N4 to work.
I dont touch the N4 at all on my 15 min drive to work.
i get to work pull it out and it shows down to 98% already wtf?
my N7 i get home and it still shows 100% fully charged and i play with it browse XDA and after 15 min is still shows 100%
I took my N4 and flashed it back to stock 4.2.2 and stock kernel.. everythign stock. did not root it.
charged it back up to 100% and removed form charger.. i check the phone in 20 min and its down to 99% already and i havnt touched it..
whats going on?
i know the N7 and N4 are both different, different battery capacities and different chipsets but my N4 should not be dropping down from 100% in 20 min when I havent even touched it.
oh yea one last thing..
my N7 is set to sync everything..
my N4 i uncheck syncing on everything except GMAIL, CONTACTS and BROWSER and have NO widgets on any home screen.
so very frustrating...
I have better battery stats installed and i see nothing weird for wake locks or partial wake locks.. nothing more than a few seconds even and no weird apps showing as a battery hog.

You have to think, the N4 is running an extra radio, as well as a different CPU anyways, and its 2100 mAh, versus >4000 on the N7 just like you said, don't expect it to stay on 100% forever with WiFi and Data going and the N7 only having WiFi.

While you're driving your 4g network is enabled which will drain your battery more. Your nexus 7 is always on wifi. Also your nexus 7 4375mAh battery whereas your nexus 4 has a 2100mAh battery which also makes your phone to lose juice faster.

I would never expect similar standby times out of the two, given the modem and just over halfed battery capacity of the 4... But having said that, for regular browsing use, they provide surprisingly similar screen on time for me! I usually get 7-8 hours out of the 7 and 6-7 from the 4... Gaming splits them again though, I usually get less than three hours of 3D gaming from the 4 and more like five hours out of the 7. All in all, not a bad showing from either, Android battery life has finally reached what I would define as reasonable.
I have seen ten hours from my Nexus 7 where usage has predominantly been video playback, but that's an exceptional usage case which is obviously an optimal scenario for the LP core in Tegra 3.

I understand but my n4 dropping from 100 to 98% in 15 min with screen off directly off charger is ridiculous.
Right now its at 23% with battery showing 5 hours since unplugged and only 1.5 hours screen time. That's nuts.

You have to consider that while you're driving around with your phone in your pocket it is changing cell towers which uses the radio and consequently battery.

1.5hours screen-on time means something is wrong. That being said 2% after a bit of driving isn't abnormal, and it's never going to be the same depending on where you drive where you live where you work etc reception wise, but 1.5hours of screen on @ 2x% battery totally is fubar'd.
Check your battery stats for wakelocks, find whatever naughty app it is you have that's doing it. Make sure Location History is off if you haven't already checked this!

100>99 or 100>98 means nothing.
The battery monitoring is clearly not linear.

What's your screen on time?
4 hours this time but i got similar with almost 10h
Not trying to be rude but you DO know that the phone charged for quite some time in that interval (obvious from screenshot) and that the time doesn't reset unless it gets fully charged... right?
Even still, the fact that the whole graph represents three days, it would seem that you're getting over a day's worth on a full run-down. Not bad.
is your data mostly off ?
i'd wifi is almost always on.. never had such battery life before and yes was charged for a small time so its almost irrelevant i think (like, was charged when using nexus s as usb storage for transfer files for less than 30 minutes)

Not bad. What's your setup? ROM/kernel? I can't get anywhere near that level of battery life and I don't even use my phone that much.
After upgrading my Nexus S with ICS the battery was a bit weak but after a few recharges it's actually insanely good.
As you can see from screen shots my record is over 4 days. I wasn't using the phone that much but I still did a fair share of downloading via wi-fi and I took a bunch of photos and a few minutes of video, etc...
The phone did charge about 10% in between as you can see from the graph (I had it plugged in via USB to transfer some files on my PC).

I did a full wipe before upgrading with full ROM.
Mine's at 4d 7h 29m 44s right now with 36% battery left.. no charging, wifi on. Been working a lot so not really used it much, check clock and battery status from time to time and maybe 1-2 text messages a day and alarm clock and check email in the morning and that's about it.

[Q] [4.2] How's your battery life?

I've updated to 4.2 as soon as it came out, few apps didn't work but I soon noticed that it wasn't the issue.
The battery life on 4.2 seems to have drastically decreased for me. I was able to watch over 10 hours of video on maximum brightness with Wi-Fi and maximum volume, after update on MINIMUM brightness and half the volume I was able to pull off about 6 hours.
Did your battery life improve or gotten worse on 4.2?
Stand by time for me seems to have improved. No data to back that up, but I usually know where my battery is at anytime of day and it has been higher than usual since the update.

For me it seems to drain very fast, ever since the update AND I've got less apps since I did clean install. I kept same settings for Wi-Fi etc. Even Stand by seems to consume a lot more battery, I mean it drained 40% during the night. I wasn't downloading or anything.
Definitely worse. It even takes longer to charge.

No difference for me. If anything it is better. Left my tablet idling after charge last night and it was still 100 percent when I woke up. On 4.1.2 it would generally go from 100 to 98 left overnight. Screen on time seems about the same.

You got big problem then. Wipe it might help
Definitely worse. Using it for ten minutes after a charge drains it by nearly ten percent, and this was after a full charge cycle. On conservative use it lasts me 6, maybe 7 hours, whereas on 4.1.2 with much more running at once I would ten hours easily. Its not that much, yeah, but I'm still going to downgrade. It's a good thing Google actually lets you downgrade unlike Apple.
for me battery life is much better. i get 17 hours with screen on 56% .

After the update I noticed the tablet rebooting occasionally, so I flashed from scratch scrosler's 4.2 rom. The dev said is the official one, he just added root. I lost 25% in 7 hours of moderate use with auto brightness . Over the night battery remained at 100%.

4.2.2 stock battery life worse?

I'm noticing that battery life is worse in 4.2.2 - I was on cm10.1 nightlies w. Cm10.1 kernel and was getting about 10 hours screen-on time before I needed to charge, but I'm getting 7 hours at best on 4.2.2 stock (rooted, bootlader locked).
I have the usual culprits turned off - Google now, location services, currents background updates etc. So I hoped I would at least get the same.

I can't comment on battery life, but did notice something a little alarming with regard to battery drain. Was on the couch for an hour talking to someone using viber, just plain text. No video or audio. Tablet was plugged into the wall, and after about an hour i noticed that the battery had gone from 100% to 98%. Should not be possible for a simple messaging app to cause the battery to drain faster than it can charge. screen was on auto brightness as well.

Did you look at your battery information to see what was using the most energy? Display is always far and away the highest for me, and if it was on Auto Brightness, depending on the lighting around you, it could have been running at full brightness...which would be a pretty massive drain on battery.

Once the device reaches a full charge it cuts off the power draw to avoid damaging the battery. It's normal for it to hover between 97% and 100% while still plugged in.
I barely get 6 hours of use now.

I did not look at battery usage, but the screen was generally dimmed, where as normally i have it manually set to full brightness, and nothing was running in the background that would not normally be running, that is to say nothing other than android stuff, it's basically a tablet for internet, email and skype/viber while i watch films etc on my computer

Indeed, but this has never happened before and i typically run the device with screen on maximum brightness. on 4.2.1 it would always show 100% when plugged in, i never once saw it drop to 99% or below.
So without further analysis of the issue, it could either be that something is sucking more power, which would seem odd, or that the update has brought about changes to the way the device charges, or changes to the way the device displays the battery level.
Damn guys, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I'm jumping around in happiness when I manage to get over 6 hours of screen time lol.

My battery life has gotten considerably better after updating to 4.2.2. The biggest improvement is how little the battery life drains on standby...it's nearly nonexistent.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
Standby has always been great for me. With stock rooted 4.2.2 I'm getting great battery life. Loses maybe 2% after 8-10 hours idle. In constant use I'm averaging 11 hours on screen. I have everything on and synced but as I'm indoors I stick to 30% brightness. Also, I'm mostly just browsing. With games the life would be less for sure. Totally satisfied with the battery life of this tablet. If yours is getting truly bad battery life I suggest you try searching for rogue apps. After that, try a complete reflash of the stock image which deletes everything. Another thing I've found that helps performance is setting the WiFi band manually. As I have a pretty good router that utilizes both the 5 and 2.4ghz bands I set mine to 5ghz only. I live in a town house and 2.4ghz can be pretty congested even after turning my antenna power up to 150mv or greater. The 5ghz band is pretty open. I'm getting load times on webpages comparable to my i5 2500k sandy at 4.5ghz and ssd with its 5ghz WiFi n wireless card. This is the quickest rendering tablet I've ever used.
As an aside, the complete re image to stock 4.2.2 from Google might fix reboot problems as well. It seems to do wonders for people with battery and other issues on early n4s. My screen on mine is new but the hardware is from launch day.

do you mean reducing the maximum cpu clock to 1.5 ghz?

did anyone "calibrated" their nexus?

I'm moderately using the nexus and only getting 5ish hours of screen time with brightness halfway. And people been saying that they get 7+ hours.
If you happen to be one of those people, did you calibrated yours? And how do you do it? I heard you have to drain the battery and then charge it back up. Does it work? Or is it just a myth?
They are many variables involved here beyond screen brightness. You are not going to hard core game for 7 hours out do anything that has CPU/GPU running high.
I keep my brightness set to auto.. Half way seems way to bright to get any decent battery life.

From initial setup (battery came at 62%) I let it completely die and then proceeded to do an initial battery charge cycle (charged it for 6 hours). After which I put it on the charger at about 14% which is normally right as I go to bed for regular charge cycles.
As for my battery life, I get an average 8 hours screen time while doing heavy gaming, watching Netflix/Youtube, listening to music, reading, and lastly browsing the web. As for standby time 3 days on battery on average (with Wi-Fi off during Sleep and always scan for Wi-Fi off).
This is with auto-brightness as I've found zero need to adjust it save for a few occasions I had to raise it for a few minutes while outdoors. If you want great battery life, leave the Nexus to it's own devices It knows how to handle it's brightness; very well I might add.
Granted your mileage my vary drastically as my Nexus 7 was flawless when purchased with zero of the known issues. (It also brought me to this lovely forum. )
Realistically you only need like 10-25 percent brightness on this thing at most times. This thing goes really bright.

About 10Hours of battery life.
Get about ten hours of battery life. I have brightness set to half. The real part that was saving me battery is the advanced wifi settings. I set it so that it never searches or keeps wifi on when sleeping. Also manually turn off wifi when I don't have coverage. I use alot of YouTube, internet and Netflix.

Battery Life Worry/Question

I've found that rebooting the phone after taking it off of charge, the battery life is awesome. There seem to be some wakelocks that kill the battery and for some reason, charging has something to do with it.
I don't know if this is why, but I heard the G2 has special screen technology that greatly reduces battery drain.

If you look at the programs listed under Android System, try uninstalling the ones that you would never use. This has seemed to help me. But to be honest it was kind of unnessary because the battery life is just crazy badass. In a few weeks or so when the devs have there way this phone is going to be epic.
It is two things, which by the way are great news.
A) LG's screen tech which doesn't refresh pixels when the images are static
and B) IPS
What we can't control is screen power consumption, but guess what? We can control android system consumption through kernels and roms. This means that we can *hopefully* expect EVEN BETTER! battery life since the screen is, for 80% of users, the main culprit for energy drain.
Just a quick note that flashing CleanROM on my ATT LG G2 basically took my battery life from <20% at the end of the workday to just under 80% at the end of the work day with increased use on the CleanROM install. Highly recommended.
Been off the charger since 6:50 this morning. Sitting here at work doing some texting, Words With Friends, and a test call for a co-worker...96% at 12:15pm. My Nexus would have been at 40% by now.
So is Android System different from Android OS?
I normally can squeeze out 15-22 hours since installing Snapdragon Battery Guru. Which has been working great until today.
Here's my situation today:
-100% charge at around 1230am. Light to moderate usage leaves me with
-77% between night before and waking up (only dropped like 2% overnight) at
-830, then i worked from 9 to 1230 so i didnt use my phone too much. But since ive been off work ive been using it more so im not too surprised about my low battery level currently.
But what concerns me is Android OS using half my battery! It says its been active for more than 4 hours and i dont understand where it comes from. Its way more than my screen usage even with a screen time of little over 3 hours.
Anyone know whats up with Android OS? It doesnt tell me what is running when i select it so im lost.
Also ive done many of the suggestions in this thread with positive results. Ive been monitoring my wakelocks and since doing some of the suggestions on here nlpcollector has actually gone down.

So is Android System different from Android OS?
I normally can squeeze out 15-22 hours since installing Snapdragon Battery Guru. Which has been working great until today.
Here's my situation today:
-100% charge at around 1230am. Light to moderate usage leaves me with

Just to benchmark .... I used the phone moderatley ..
I did.. a little over 50 hours of total on time
4.75 hours of on screen time,
2 hours of spotify with bluetooth for the entire time,
2 hours of MapMyRun with GPS running ..
then various text messaging and a couple phone calls
The only modifications i've made to the stop experiance is taking of google's location service for programs, but leaving GPS active .. and changing the screen to auto-brightness, baseline of 50%.
I came from the SGS2 ..... with 1 hour of on screen time and the other spotify and bluetooth .. i'd be around 10-20% after 8-10 hours !!!!!
Mines pretty awesome.

I'm not sure if my battery is defective or not. Right out of the box was around 75% and I drained it until it turned off then charged it to full.
Over the next few days at work it's on wifi and then on 3G/4G before /after work. I pull it from the charger at 7:30am and by 7pm its at 40%. Then on Friday night I unplugged it at 12am with 100% and woke up the next day with 80%. It's dropping like 1% about 10-15minutes. Would a factory reset fix the battery drain? or call for a replacement?

wow that's really amazing. ill try that out and disable google location services and see what happens. will that interfere with google now? i mean i would totally sacrifice google now for 50 hours though.
