[Q] [4.2] How's your battery life? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've updated to 4.2 as soon as it came out, few apps didn't work but I soon noticed that it wasn't the issue.
The battery life on 4.2 seems to have drastically decreased for me. I was able to watch over 10 hours of video on maximum brightness with Wi-Fi and maximum volume, after update on MINIMUM brightness and half the volume I was able to pull off about 6 hours.
Did your battery life improve or gotten worse on 4.2?

Stand by time for me seems to have improved. No data to back that up, but I usually know where my battery is at anytime of day and it has been higher than usual since the update.

For me it seems to drain very fast, ever since the update AND I've got less apps since I did clean install. I kept same settings for Wi-Fi etc. Even Stand by seems to consume a lot more battery, I mean it drained 40% during the night. I wasn't downloading or anything.

Definitely worse. It even takes longer to charge.

The battery life after 4.2 update is awful.

I've just noticed that too. I was able to charge it overnight from scratch with extension cable fully. Now it goes just above 90%.

I updated to 4.2, and it drained my battery from 100% to 78% in 12 hours, with idle!!!
<<stock ROM, no-rooted, stock kernel, no installed apps>>

No difference for me. If anything it is better. Left my tablet idling after charge last night and it was still 100 percent when I woke up. On 4.1.2 it would generally go from 100 to 98 left overnight. Screen on time seems about the same.

You got big problem then. Wipe it might help

Definitely worse. Using it for ten minutes after a charge drains it by nearly ten percent, and this was after a full charge cycle. On conservative use it lasts me 6, maybe 7 hours, whereas on 4.1.2 with much more running at once I would ten hours easily. Its not that much, yeah, but I'm still going to downgrade. It's a good thing Google actually lets you downgrade unlike Apple.

for me battery life is much better. i get 17 hours with screen on 56% .

Mine has decrease a lot... now the back of my nexus 7 gets hot and drains the battery really fast.... anyone has a link to a better ROM or one that gives u a better battery life
?

man i follow my guide to update to 4.2 and i dont get any battery issues , if you wanna try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1990258

My battery is much improved. Before I was getting about 5 hours of screen on time with heavy use. After the update, I'm getting 7 hours of screen on time with heavy use.

Seems slightly better on stand by..that's for sure. Too soon to tell otherwise.

Hello,
After the update I noticed the tablet rebooting occasionally, so I flashed from scratch scrosler's 4.2 rom. The dev said is the official one, he just added root. I lost 25% in 7 hours of moderate use with auto brightness . Over the night battery remained at 100%.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

After few battery cycles, I still have to keep my opinion of worse battery life sadly.
Just looking right now under battery settings, there seem to be many more "Google" things "Android OS (as it was before) Google Services, Android System, Tablet Idle, and Maps and Media server also seem to be taking up more battery.

my battery conservation method is simple:
- Turn on wifi and leave it on
- Set the phone to GSM only.
This almost doubled my battery life using stock HTC gingerbread.

Why would turning on wifi improve battery life?
The idle time on Unity is very good. I'm somewhere around day 2-3/4and just now getting to 50%
However when you're using it the battery tends to die pretty quick.
Pyromod! its amazing, I get about two days battery life.
I never worry anymore, If i'm going out of the house around 5 PM with 20 percent battery life, I'm good for the rest of the night and morning.

That's how it is. The firmware interacts with the battery in a way that any % over 90% is considered a full charge, so sometimes this comes away with the phone sitting at 100% for a long time (up to like 2 hours for me if I don't use the phone much), then draining normally. It doesn't drain fast, it just drains fast compared to the battery sitting at 100%.

Not true. CM6 had a drain rate of 3%/h on idle with no connections and me popping it on once or twice an hour to get a text.
Cm7 was around the same. All stock clock with downclock with the screen off to around 500mhz.
Unity's idle rate is only about 1%/3-4 hours. It's insane.

No, I mean you clearly are going to drain fast when using a phone compared to idle.
And any ROM with a proper kernel can be undervolted / underclocked with apps to disable data in order to drain less battery in idle.

I can't tell if you're kidding or not, but the phones and ROMs I've seen all exhibit this behaviour. The OS will report the battery at 100% for a long time, as if the battery has more capacity than the OS knows about. A more accurate estimate would be to wait until you're at 99%, and then see how fast the meter drops. Better yet would be to use something like Current Widget or Battery Monitor Widget to record real-time current draw, then calculate how much energy has been consumed.
I wish there was a way to calibrate what "100%" actually means, but I don't think that is possible, since it is a hardware limitation.

Standby Times?

Hey everyone,
Standby time is probably one of the most important features in a ROM/Kernel combination and its idle time is important to me.
This is due to the fact I work most days, until evening and by the time I get home, I have a couple of hours to kill.
Which is usually food, wash and chill.
On stock, I was averaging about 2 days, with 2.5% drain an hour, on standby.
I flashed PA 2.54 and Faux kernel and HOLYCRAP am I impressed,
0.8% drain an hour on idle.
Just out of curiosity, is this a good average?
Are their better kernels for battery time than Faux, as I was going to try Motley but Faux has impressed.
What do you guys aim for in Idle time?
Thanks,

Wifi off I can go 8+ hours and it still registers 100%. When my N7 is asleep, the battery usage graph is absolutely flat.
I haven't let it sit around for days at a time, but when I'm busy or doing other things, flat.

I'm using completely stock unrooted 4.2.1 and can say no, when it comes to standby battery there's basically no room for improvement. I don't have anything syncing in background (that's what my G'nex is for) and don't lose any battery during idle. I can leave it setting for several hours (as in more than 6) at a time and when I check it the most battery loss I've ever seen is 2%. And that's when the battery is below 50% already, if I start at 100 it won't move for 9+ hours of standby.

Have to say the idle time is pretty stellar for me. I use the N7 for a monitor on my stedicam suit. Even with full day of monitoring once she goes to sleep I can almost anticipate 1% drop an hour.
Best settings are the airplane with 30% brightness.
When I'm rocking and rolling full brightness with monitoring HD through otg USB power is still reliable.

Nexus 4 Battery Life

Hey Guys,
A bunch of people are complaining about the battery life on Nexus 4. I've been waited for a couple days since I got the device, to have enough confident about the battery before I make any post here. Yes, the phone battery drain pretty fast on the first few cycles. After a bunch more charges later, let me tell this, the battery life did get significantly better. It lasted about 10-15 hr depends on the load of the usage.
Here is my typical day, off the charge at 100% in the morning, listen to a few songs, checking emails, and messages while getting ready for school. About an 30mn to 1hr of internet browser and youtube videos while on the bus. By 1-2pm the battery drop the about 70-80%. I put the phone in silent mood til i'm done with all my classes. On the way back home on the bus, I listened to a bunch of music, web browsing, maybe a few phone calls, texts or games.
Compare to my old phone, Samsung Galaxy S2 T989, im impressed with the Nexus 4 battery life. My Galaxy S2 battery always die on the bus coming back home. What I'm trying to get at: if you're a light to medium user like me, then get this phone. I was hesitate at first because I always have bad experience with android battery life. But Google seem to get its OS right with this nexus device, mainly because the battery drain minimum while in sleeping mood.
Can you post your Nexus 4 battery performance screenshot if you have been using the phone for more than a few days ?
Is there supposed to be a question being asked? Or a statement as this is in the Q&A forum.
I agree with you on many points. People need to wait at least 5 to 7 days for the battery charge to fully kick in. The first days mean absolutely nothing as it is still being aligned plus the user is still installing apps and setting up their phone.
There are some notable problems in the default kernel that uses more battery Usage than normal too.

From full battery to this overnight + breakfast usage. Rasbean + Matr1x v3.0. Never seen anything like it. Coming from the GN, this phone is a different dimension altogether. On any aspect..
Had phone for 5 days. Drained phone to 10% then fully charged. Moderate to light use made it through a day.
Stock rooted + Franco Kernel.

Depends on how much screen time you got, which you didn't show us.
The trick is to be careful about using mobile data when signal is bad, I switch to WiFi when home to avoid unnecessary battery drain.

What is this obsession for battery life, it lasts me well through the day with moderate/heavy use. I charge it at night (if needed) and unless you are homeleless this shouldn`t be a problem. It`s a great phone and i enjoy using it.

I thought the same until my N4 actually arrived, it seems battery life is abysmal compared to my Optimus 2x which didnt have anything really spectacular in regards to battery size. On my O2x I could get 1.5 - 2.5 days depending on use, hitting atleast 1 .5 which was good and acceptable for me (I can charge at night anyways) however my N4 doesnt even reach 13 hours on similar usage!.
I am quite a light users of smartphones however I do like to have a power phone when it comes to using it on the basis of smoothness and capabilities if I need to say do work on my phone, I rarely play games though. Main usage is 2 email accounts on poll 1 hour steps, a third account that is an exchange server and polls in 30 minute steps and thats about it with some brief browsing and a handful of texts (been a quite time since I got my N4), this is less usage than my O2x and yet it still performs alot worse!
I was hoping of staying with stock as I was expecting it to finally be good, comparing it to LG stock attempts it is but battery life isnt . I will be trying the combo Vangelis13 mentioned, raspbean and matr1x kernel as that seems like a great mix however Parandroid has been on the table and it seems like alot of being are getting good results so I will try it soon .
If I can get more than a day of usage I would be really happy, if I was playing games or doing really heavy tasks I wouldnt expect it to last but right now it is doing pretty much nothing and dieing far to fast!.
One thing I've noticed since coming to N4 from S2 is that phone calls drain battery much more significantly on the N4. I could make an hour long call on my S2 and it would use no more than a couple of percent battery but the N4 used 15% for an hour long phone call the other night.
If I didn't own a nexus 4 and came to this thread to find out about it's battery life I would expect it to be good.
Point is you guys are misinforming everyone. The battery is mediocre and that's it.
It won't last a full day if you use it constantly and I do need two charges / day many times.
Let me put it this way, you will only get roughly 3 hours of screen time on stock everything. If that is good for you then it's will have good battery life, if not then you will say it's got poor battery life.

you are perfectly right.
I come from an iPhone 4s, which I changed because the battery life wasn´t that great and I thought it was time to try something new.
Got the N4 last friday and played around with it during the weekend.
Monday, tuesday and wednesday this week... none of these days I´ve been able to come back home with the phone still on.
I wake up at 7.30am and I usually am back home at 6pm.
In my opinion, and honestly should be in everyone´s opinion, 10 hours of battery life are unacceptable, whatever the usage is (considering that 7.30 of those 10 hours I was at work)
I have till friday this week to return it, which is a pity because the phone is great
i get 5-6 hours sot..
rom is omnirom 5.1.1 hellscore kernel b73.
100mv undervoltage hellsactive governer.
think 7 would be possible if google services would not take a quarter of the battery.
the screen is not taking that much battery as one would think.
think most issues with battery life come from fake original battery replacements.
had 3-4 sot using "original" battery. but after replacing with real genuine from official lg spare parts shop 5-6...

4.2.2 stock battery life worse?

I'm noticing that battery life is worse in 4.2.2 - I was on cm10.1 nightlies w. Cm10.1 kernel and was getting about 10 hours screen-on time before I needed to charge, but I'm getting 7 hours at best on 4.2.2 stock (rooted, bootlader locked).
I have the usual culprits turned off - Google now, location services, currents background updates etc. So I hoped I would at least get the same.

Yes! I just read that. I am just about to do it now.
I can't comment on battery life, but did notice something a little alarming with regard to battery drain. Was on the couch for an hour talking to someone using viber, just plain text. No video or audio. Tablet was plugged into the wall, and after about an hour i noticed that the battery had gone from 100% to 98%. Should not be possible for a simple messaging app to cause the battery to drain faster than it can charge. screen was on auto brightness as well.

Did you look at your battery information to see what was using the most energy? Display is always far and away the highest for me, and if it was on Auto Brightness, depending on the lighting around you, it could have been running at full brightness...which would be a pretty massive drain on battery.

Once the device reaches a full charge it cuts off the power draw to avoid damaging the battery. It's normal for it to hover between 97% and 100% while still plugged in.
I barely get 6 hours of use now.

I did not look at battery usage, but the screen was generally dimmed, where as normally i have it manually set to full brightness, and nothing was running in the background that would not normally be running, that is to say nothing other than android stuff, it's basically a tablet for internet, email and skype/viber while i watch films etc on my computer

Indeed, but this has never happened before and i typically run the device with screen on maximum brightness. on 4.2.1 it would always show 100% when plugged in, i never once saw it drop to 99% or below.
So without further analysis of the issue, it could either be that something is sucking more power, which would seem odd, or that the update has brought about changes to the way the device charges, or changes to the way the device displays the battery level.
Damn guys, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I'm jumping around in happiness when I manage to get over 6 hours of screen time lol.
I've been on battery for the past 12+ hours with about 6 hours 15 minutes screen time and still have 36% battery left. Battery seems at least as good as on 4.2.1.

Thanks, I've done this now, and get about 5~6 hours of screen time now with around 50% left.
My battery life has gotten considerably better after updating to 4.2.2. The biggest improvement is how little the battery life drains on standby...it's nearly nonexistent.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
Standby has always been great for me. With stock rooted 4.2.2 I'm getting great battery life. Loses maybe 2% after 8-10 hours idle. In constant use I'm averaging 11 hours on screen. I have everything on and synced but as I'm indoors I stick to 30% brightness. Also, I'm mostly just browsing. With games the life would be less for sure. Totally satisfied with the battery life of this tablet. If yours is getting truly bad battery life I suggest you try searching for rogue apps. After that, try a complete reflash of the stock image which deletes everything. Another thing I've found that helps performance is setting the WiFi band manually. As I have a pretty good router that utilizes both the 5 and 2.4ghz bands I set mine to 5ghz only. I live in a town house and 2.4ghz can be pretty congested even after turning my antenna power up to 150mv or greater. The 5ghz band is pretty open. I'm getting load times on webpages comparable to my i5 2500k sandy at 4.5ghz and ssd with its 5ghz WiFi n wireless card. This is the quickest rendering tablet I've ever used.
As an aside, the complete re image to stock 4.2.2 from Google might fix reboot problems as well. It seems to do wonders for people with battery and other issues on early n4s. My screen on mine is new but the hardware is from launch day.

My battery life is significantly worse after the update. I flashed back to stock 4.2.2. It seems that the problem with mine is my tablet isn't sleeping. Android os is the highest battery user. Maps is taking a lot too. I have Google now and location services turned on so I'll try disabling those again... No rebooting though

[Q] Battery life.. (android system)

Hi all.
Just a quick question. My battery life is great but i feel like it could be much better. Here are my current stats as i write this.
With this its saying i will get under 4 hours screen on time, i wouldnt say i was a heavy user. I use my phone quite a bit but i wouldnt say it was alot.My biggest problem is with the android system anyone else have it as such a big drain? Somedays its sat up at 40%
Anyone know what i can do to rectify this? Im currently not rooted..
Thanks in advance
Liam
There are just two possibilities.
LG stock rom is so bloated that it sucks most of battery or GRAM feature is so good that screen time is not really problem anymore.
Forgot to mention, my screen time was 2hr 30 so probably looking at not even getting 4 hours screen on time.. Gonna have to guess that it's the stock rom sucking up loads of battery? Would that cause the android system percentage to be so high?
I'm having the same issue here.. Getting 4 hours screen ttime though...

install greenify. it save my battery. last longer.
I can easily reach 6 hours screen on time. And I'm a heavy user and by no means try to save battery. multiple social networks, emails syncing etc often streaming music and watch videos and brightness set to a constant 75%. This is on StockModRom. So yeah I'd say something is draining your battery unnecessarily there.
Try installing better battery stats:

see if anything is keeping your phone awake, I'm sure the guys over at that forum can help you, don't forget to Thank/donate to the guy if his app helped you. Whats your drain when phone is left overnight? mine varies between 0-3%.

Hopefully better battery stats will show me whats up!

If you find one, please let me know. As Android System is also eating my battery.

Strangely, for me, when I go over ~2h screen time the Android System drain is taken over by the Screen drain. This being said, I never got over 3h30m of screen time - this is with about 10h WiFi (including overnight => ~2% drain) and about 7h 3G. I have noticed plenty of crap among the kernel wakelocks, but I lack the knowledge to remove them in the source code and rebuild the kernel.
Also, BBS is among the apps that trigger a Qualcomm bug regarding sensor kernel wakelocks (sns_async_ev_wakelock), which, obviously, lead to more battery drain.
All of this is not really acceptable coming from a company like Qualcomm (the sensor bug, in particular, is present ever since the S3 QC version...).
I'll second that Greenify is pretty good at saving battery.
I too have had a screen on time of 6 hours 11 mins over a duration of being off charge for over 14 hours
I'm using StockMOD kernel but the ROM itself is stock as i can't seem to get StockMOD rom to boot.
Also if you Root try TricksterMOD and use multicore savings etc maybe get a bit more life from your battery
Hope battery life gets better for you as it is an awesome phone would be nice for you to enjoy it as much as the rest of us

Okay, so i gave up finding what it was. did a system restore and well what can i say? apart from WOW.
been on for 26 hours now with 2hr 20mins screen on time and still at 62% absolutely amazing!
still unsure whether to root and try and squeeze even more battery out of it!
Still annoyed i never found out what was causing the issue..
Wow just wow. This was my last charge, absolutley incredible.
This includes 1hr 45min of music streaming.
Streaming a 2hr 20 min film.
Twitter/facebook/emails and a tiny maybe 10 mins of web browsing.
I have with cyanogenmod 11 a very nice Akku.
99% Akku - 5 hours standby (Internet GPS.... On)
58% Akku - 4.5 houers tune in radio (everytime Internet on)
I think that's whery good
