Tmobile compatible phone question - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am keeping my Nexus 4, however I am in the market for a a phone for my wife. It has to work with T-Mobile and I would love to find her a HSPA+ compatible phone, however i am really confused on how to figure this out.
For example I am looking at this phone at GSMArena:
Sony Xperia T and they say these are the bandz:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
How do I know it will work with T-Mobile's HSPA+?
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks bud, but that doesnt answer my question, I dont need to know what coverage is in my area, but more what phone is capable of using T-Mobile's HSPA+

Yes it will. T-Mobile used 1700 and 2100 for HSDPA.

Thanks EL Daddy! So if a phone lists those bands 1700/2100 that means it'll work with HSPA?
I ask because I am also looking at this phone the Xperia S and those bands are :
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 - LT26i

That one will probably not work as I believe you need both the 1700 & 2100 to work ( up & downlink connection).

3G or UMTS is as follows;
2100 refers to Band I / IMT and is used in Europe and Asia
1900 refers to Band II / PCS and is used by AT&T in cities, and by T-Mobile (1900 migration).
1700 refers to Band IV / AWS and is used by T-Mobile (most HSPA service is still here).
850 refers to Band V / CLR and is used by AT&T in rural areas.

T-Mobile is slowly moving HSPA from 1700 to 1900 to support unlocked iPhones and free up 1700 for LTE deployment.
I would look for a phone that supports both (1700 now, 1900 future) or it may have a short life span.

Nexus 4 works great on T-mobiles HSPA+ . I regularly get 20.8 mbps down/2.5 mbps up.. and this is in a 1700/2100 mhz AWS area .. PDX area has not been refarmed to 1900mhz yet - and Nexus 4 supports both 1900 mhz HSPA+ and AWS HSPA+ - so no worries.

Just to clear up one thing. T-Mobile often refers to 2100 as the Download Frequency of AWS (Band IV), while most hardware manufactures reference 2100 as IMT (Band I). See column 2 in the wikipedia link I posted earlier.
I get both bands here in NYC (mostly AWS) and the speed is about the same on both (20 Mbps / 2.5 Mbps), but ping results are quite a bit lower on PCS.

can the CINGULAR 8525 use HSDPA 2100

I read on GSMARENA that the 8525 us version is only 850 and 1900. is that true and is there any soft hack to put 2100 (I live in Brazil and 3g with TIM is 2100 here)
I think you read that wrong.
The 8525 already supports the 2100 frequency out of the box. Thats why it works in countries like Japan.
I belive what you were reading was the US (AT&T) uses 850/1900 for its network. However the phone itself supports GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900 / WCDMA 850 / WCDMA 1900 / WCDMA 2100
Appears to be different version for US

Some phones have different versions for US
Every Cingular 8525, Cingular 8500 and ATT 8525 I've ever used (Mine and friends and work) have ALL supported the 2100 MHZ band.
I even searched the ATT HTC forums and all the results I've saw showed people using their 8525 in places like Japan that uses the 2100 freq without any problems. And these were all US versions.

Was in Japan last week & had no problems using my 8525 over there.
I used mine in 2100, and HSDPA work OK

Any idea on how to get the HSDPA to work on the Cingular 8525? I have the AT&T Tilt and used the Kaiser Tweak and works perfectly. Co-worker has the 8525 but not showing up. We work about 300 feet from a cingular tower that has HSDPA because my Tilt picks it up but not his 8525.
Is there any type of setting that must be done for this to work like I had to do the Kaiser Tweak?

Galaxy SII working in the US

Would anyone happen to know-
if I buy a Galaxy SII from Europe, would it work in the US? specifically with T-Mobile?
As I understand it, yes. But only with the EDGE network. 3G and 4G frequencies are probably different. Could be wrong.
This is the band T-Mobile USA uses: AWS, or UTMS. I don't think it would work, seeing the Galaxy S II's specs. I believe it has to be capable of both. I think best case scenario, it works like an unlocked iPhone and you can get Edge, but not 3G, much less "4G."
While the Galaxy S II supposedly works in both bands, I believe that in order to fully function with T-mobile USA's network it has to support both at the same time. Like I mentioned before, that's called AWS, and it seems to me it would have to be explicitly written in there as a supported band.
So what other carrier would support this device?

Completely wrong.
At&t uses 850 & 1900 for data.
The SGS2 has 850, 900, 1900, and 2100.
It should work on t mobile, but I don't know the network bands off the top if my head.

I had to post because I saw alot of misinformation.
The GS II will certainly work in the United States.
It is a Quad Band GSM phone w/ EDGE data. It will also work on the 1900 WCDMA 3G band. At&t, Telus and Bell ALL function on the 1900 WCDMA band.
So yes the GS II will work with 3g on the 1900 WCDMA band here in the states and in Canada. You only need one 3g Band either 850 or 1900 will do. Best to have both so check your coverage area. I have a Galaxy S and have constant 3.5G HSPA signal with 1900 WCDMA only band.

I looked up the network bands. This is how it is:
Voice/calls/texts/etc. will work 100% fine on both of them.
As for 3G:
SGS2: 850, 900, 1900, 2100
AT&T uses 850 and 1900. 3G will work perfectly.
T-mobile uses 1700 and 2100. Apparently their network is retarded and you need both.

T-Mobile uses 1700 paired with 2100 commonly referred to as 1700. A phone with 2100 will not work on T-Mobile... A phone must have 1700 to work on the T-Mobile USA 3G network anywhere in the USA. This phone will work on the 2G network and IF T-Mobile has any 1900 3G towers it could connect to those (I'm not aware of any at this time).

Is the Qualcomm chip on the new TMo SGS2 worth it than the Exynos siblings?

Found this on the other forum that I found interesting, and could be a debatable topic:
The AWS (1700) bands are supported only by a handful of carriers. It doesn't exist at all in Europe and Asia. There's little reason for manufacturers to include it on their global phones as so few people use it. It's the reason the T-Mobile SGS2 has a Qualcomm chip instead of Exynos like the rest of them. After the merger, it won't even exist in the U.S. any longer as AT&T plans on using it (1700) for LTE. If you want versatility and the ability to use unlocked phones, change to AT&T.
^Even international version doesn't support T-Mobile 3g/4g (HSPA+) network.. Not many phones support their network. Or maybe it will.. but not everywhere

[Q] Noob question about GSM and Quadband Frequency

I was thinking about buying me a open line LG Optimus G2 then bringing it to japan, and give it as a gift. Ive been doing some research on the net, and it says that Japan doesnt support of use GSM frequency band, because they are not using 2G or something? Can someone please enlight me or explain this to me. How this things work, because i had already tried, and called the site here in norway that who are selling it. They told that it supposed to work but, after i have done my search on my own, i really doubt that what he told me. lol
So can somebody please or tell or can confirm to me that working or not?
These are the frequency band of LG Optimus G2: 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100

You'll have to compare which radio frequencies the phone is compatible with and what the carrier uses. I know the first can be found on Wikipedia, and possibly the carrier frequencies also.

I did that, and then I ran into this chart and kinda freaked out. Do only the frequency bands matter?
The ATT S 4 seems to definitely have 850 MHz for LTE which SK has in Korea. I couldn't find as reliable information for the S 4 Mini though. Wikipedia also lists SK as having a UMTS/HSPA network at 2100 MHz and according to GSM Arena, the S 4 supports HSDPA on 2100 MHz. So does that mean it's compatible?

Wikipedia has the international S4 Mini listed with the same frequency bands, and if the I337 has them then I can only assume the Mini would. So as far as I know it should be compatible. However, if you're talking about SK Telecom, their wikipedia page also says things about CDMA, and I don't know if that'll work at all.

:/ I was hoping for SK since that had the most matches with bands. Also, I don't think that's necessarily true because when I was looking at S4 specs on either Phone Arena or GSM Arena, they had listed some bands that the AT&T model didn't have that the others did. I assume the same would be the case for the S4 Mini but I don't recall seeing AT&T specific specs regarding the bands for it.

I suppose it should then, I've just known CDMA and GSM phones not to cross. My friend tried a Verizon SIM in my S4 and it seemed not to work, but I'm not knowledgeable about the differences of GSM and CDMA and whether or not all service will work correctly.
