Hi my uncle just gave me an att Sierra Wireless Aircard 754S, i have an att phone with 4g unlimited internet plan and its rooted sometimes i do tether. But i wanted to know if i can put the phone sim in the wireless aircard without any problem or did i needed to unlock it or something like that.
Don't know about the 4G.
I moved an att sim between a G1 and a usb data stick on 3g.
Screwed by Google. Canceled ICS upgrade on my Moto Photon. No Wow for us.

If I purchased a MyTouch 3G from Craigslist and then used it on ATT, how would OTA updates work when released (from TMo)?
Are OTA updates possible via WiFi or do you have to be using TMo SIM to get it to work?
Can't get out of ATT contrac for a good while but keen to try Android phone.
Can I buy a $10 prepaid SIM from TMo (if that is indeed a possibilty) and use the MyTouch that way? I don't want to buy an extra monthly paid SIM or anything like that cause that would be a waste of $ as I currently have coverage. Hope someone in he know can help. Thank you.
If you purchased a MyTouch 3G from Craigslist and then used it on AT&T, you would NOT get any OTA update from T-Mobile because the updates are pushed through T-Mobile data connection, not WiFi. So even if you were using the phone on T-Mobile (say via a $10 prepaid SIM card) without a data plan, you wouldn't get the update either.
But I don't see why not getting OTA updates is such a big deal, as any official T-Mobile update will appear on XDA 10 minutes after it becomes available. Also, the joy of using Android is flash custom ROMs onto the phone, and custom ROMs are often WAY ahead of T-Mobile's.
Just so you know, AT&T will detect that you're using a smartphone and automatically sign up for a data plan (if you don't already have one) without telling you.
The myTouch is really crippled without a data plan though. For instance, the deal breaker for me is that you can't send or receive MMS (picture/video messages) without a data plan.
I know when I had my G1, I received the cupcake OTA over wifi.
I'm on AT&T and don't have a data plan.

How would ATT know I had a smartphone if the phone is a TMo phone that is unlocked? I thought they only knew about smartphones from "their" arsenal of devices?
Can anyone confirm for sure if you would need a data plan using a non-ATT (smart)phone?
I already have a data plan (GRRR!) that I "had" to have, so hopefully I could do all the "nice" things the MyTouch can do.
I phoned TMo and asked about a $10 prepaid card for a phone purchased on Craigslist but the CSR said I had to have a monthly tariff thingy with data. Was he just trying for a hard-sell or can I indeed just get a simple cheap $10 prepaid SIM and play with the unit until it can get unlocked?
Thanks for the help.

They do automatically tack on the data plan for people who buy the Nexus 1. They are only able to tell it is a Nexus One however because Google gave them a list of all of their phones IMEIs.
If you are using a T-Mo phone or from any other carrier, their is no way for AT&T to beable to tell what kind of phone it is unless the carrier the phone oringinally belonged too decides to share their IMEI listing with AT&T. Which they don't do.
but you already have a data plan anyways so it doesn't even really matter. What sucks tho is that you are paying for the data plan and you will be stuck with EDGE. You will not beable to use AT&Ts 3G network. You should have looked for a Rogers over a T-MO.

That would be a good idea, but being in the middle of USA, I am guessing there won't be too many people who have Canadian phones to sell on my local Craigslist.
Twice, I nearly was able to trade for a MyTouch 3G and each time, the person pulled out at the last minute
Will keep trying though.

I'm not sure how but AT&T WILL detect that you're using a smartphone, regardless what kind of smartphone it is. I'm currently using a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1i, which is not supported by any of the US carriers. One day, I popped my friend's AT&T SIM card (he had been using a RAZR without a data plan) in and voila, I was surfin' the net after less than a second over EDGE (the X1i can't use 3G in the US). The next day, my friend checked online and a data plan was enabled for his line. Luckily, he was able to turn it off but only after an hour of explaining. He was reprimanded by the AT&T rep for putting their SIM card into an unsupported device which could potentially cause damage to their network (WTF?!!!).

And yes, the Tmo CSR was just trying to sell you the data plan. When I had my myTouch, I was using it with a prepaid SIM card without data plan and it was fine. But, ON A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: you will need a SIM card with data plan to activate the phone. There is simply no other way around it. When I bought mine from Craiglist, I wiped the phone right on the spot and borrowed the seller's SIM card to activate it (your AT&T SIM card would work provided you have already unlocked the phone - which can be done on eBay for about $12). Luckily, back then the myTouch was still running Android 1.5 which allowed for rooting. You should do the same or don't wipe the phone until you have root it. However, if the phone is running Android 1.6 or higher, well, you're out of luck. The process is a bit more tedious. Check theunlockr.com for how-to.

They activated a data plan on your buddies account because you put his sim into your smartphone and started browsing the web with it over edge.
Did you think they weren't going to charge you for that?
They didnt know you had a smartphone. They knew you were browing the web using data.
If you hadn't begun browsing the web, they wouldn't have tacked on the data plan. They tacked on the data plan because you began using it.
Is there any cell phone network that doesn't have the 5 gig Cap. I am not too happy about t mobile capping my phone. And slowing down my phone substantially after I go over my 5 gig limit
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
even if u unlock the phone, it wont work on other providers. or the 3g/4g wont anyway. u can get unlimited edge on other networks im sure, if thats your thing.
Here's what I'm wondering. I have 2 plans. An original plan that I got with my black berry and I got the 30 dollar web plan. I then upgraded to the g1 and used the same data plan and still have this data plan. Now I started another line to get my g2. That one I signed up as a data only plan cus I don't need 2 phone lines just wanted a g2 and had no upgrade. Now the onlyy data plan that I could use to sign up my g2 was like 50 dpllars amonth and is on the new 4g network. Well I took my first sim that has my original data plan for my blackberry and put it in my g2. Now this data plan does not use the 4g network cus I only get h no h+ on my g2 I then called customer service and was told I need to upgrade my data plan to the new android one to get 4g internet speeds. Well I've gone well over 5 gigs with my original plan from tethering to tether xbox live mw2 to downloading 2g torrents on my phone that are movies. And never been throtttled. So is it only the new android 50 dollar amonth data plan that gets throttled. So I'm tempted not to upgrade id rather have a 3g all monthe then be throttled to edge
Every broadband provider does this throtle ****. Such as comcast and att

WHAT? you post doesnt make much sense and comes off kinda dumb.
G2 doesnt have a h+ icon. H is for 3g and 4g signal.
Second, If you had a data plan before the g2 came out then you will have a 10gb cap.
If you added or upgraded a data plan after the g2 came out then you will have a 5gb cap.

To the op there isnt any networks in the USA that doesnt have a soft or hard cap.
Plus as already stated the phone will only work with tmobile 3g/4g
Hello, i would like to try verizon on my atrix which is on att prepaid. I got a 4g verizon sim on ebay dont know if i can use it tho. I just wanted to try verizon prepaid on my phone to see if i like it better, i dont need 4g just phone and wifi. Any suggestions how to do this?
thanks!
The Atrix has neither a CDMA radio for standard use nor a LTE radio to use Verizon's 4G service. There is no way to do what you are suggesting, I'm sorry.
I have a G2x and have NOOOOO data where I live currently. I tried to cancel my contract (because I was told being in the military you send a copy of your orders you can cancel without a fee) but t-mobile won't do it.
I have the G2x set to roam and I pick up some edge service (I assume at&t)
I know the G2x doesn't have at&ts 4g band.
I read an article about the HTC amaze being able to hop on at&t and pick up 4g signal. Is there any old cheap T-mobile phone I can unlock to pick up at&t's 3g with ? I don't need 4g, I just want some service.
I have a family plan with my wife and I can't afford $400 in termination fees and $200-$400 in phones with verizon. Any valid input would be greatly appreciated.
No there is nothing cheap that will do that, and no phone will do it with the T-mobile SIM card in it. Doesn't the G2X have wi-fi calling? The Amaze and Tmobile GS2 can have ATT radios flashed to them, but they will only pick up 3G and 4G with an ATT sim.
No cell company will cancel your contract with military orders. If you show them orders for deployment or an extended TDY they will suspend your contract, but not cancel it.
Thanks for the response. There was a guy in my shop that said he didn't have service at work and they let him off (I guess the rep has a choice?)
As far as wifi calling I just put gingerbread on today so now I have wifi calling. My wife has an old POS phone (because tmobile upgrade her contract when they weren't supposed to...don't get me started on that I'm am SOOO mad a T-mobile.)
So I can't buy a AT&T 3g phone unlock it and put a T-mobile sim in? So I get access to the data I'm paying for every month?

You will get data just not 3g or above. This is hardware dependent.

I know the G2x doesn't have the proper radio to pick up at&t 3g/4g. I was wondering if any other phone did. I read this article
http://phandroid.com/2011/11/08/t-mobiles-htc-amaze-4g-compatible-with-att-3g4g/
It states that somebody on this forum actually used the tmobile htc amaze on at&t 3g/4g network. Is there any truth to this ?
ahhhhhh....I just noticed it said with at&t sim card. Setting the phone to roam with a tmobile sim would essentially do the same thing no ?
Have you gotten the updated SIM card?

The T-mobile Galaxy S II, Amaze and Galaxy Nexus will all work and give you HSPA+ on both AT&T and T-mobile assuming the devices are unlocked
What about trading someone plans or something? Like I'm thinking of trading for a T-Mobile phone since I got the $30 prepaid plan but only get Edge on my D3.
On the other side of this thread, I have a tmobile phone unlocked with an att sim, is there a way I can pick up att 3g since I have the att sim and a Tmo device? Its an LG P509

Look on PhoneArena for your phone and if it has the 1900 band under 3G then yes.

Hi everybody!
Looking for some advice from US members.
I'm gonna be traveling to US for almost a month. Could somebody suggest the best pay as you go plan not for calls but for unlimited data or something that looks like unlimited. I have a LG V10 with bands 1, 3, 7 so I guess there is no 4G for me? My wife though has a v20 with 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,12,20,28 bands. So this device will have a 4G from ATT or Tmobile. Am I right? So probably the best scenario is to buy 1 SIM and tether 4g from this device to all other? Is there any restrictions for tethering?
Any info is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Personally I use Net10's $40 dollar plan. It has unlimited talk + text with 3GBs high speed and 3G speeds after that. Most MVNO's have competitive prices, but the cool thing about Net10 is you can use them on any carrier's network. Basically the set-up process starts with picking up one of their SIM kits from Walmart or such. You have to choose one carrier and the SIM kit comes with two SIMs (1 mini, 1 micro) for each carrier, with each tuned to their respective carrier's network. You check who you get the best reception with by plugging in each SIM and finding what works best. The SIM kit comes with a $40 plan card that you activate on their website and bam you have a working phone. The whole process took me about 30 mins.

I would suggest Simple Mobile. It runs off the GSM network, ie; AT & T, T-Mobile carriers and any companies that use the same networks. The plan is $60/ mo and is truly unlimited for talk, text, and data. Been using it for at least 2 yes now and can't be more happier.
