[Q] About rooting my nook glow 1.2.1 version - Nook Touch General

hello guys! i have read a lot of topics in here about rooting a nook glow, but now i still dont know why am doing wrong? I updated to 1.2.1 version and start rooting with this step:
1) install glownooter-1-12-25.zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706) with clockwordmod and reboot
2) then i install beta5-1XWUMFTouch-PART-2-END.zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706) to fix "cant add an account to gmail" with clockworldmod too.
3) install install-kernel-166.zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906507&page=14) (i heard someone said that kernel 174 dont work with norefresh, just fastmode)
4) and install NoRefreshToggle-debug2.apk (https://github.com/marspeople/NoRefreshToggle/downloads) for 1.2.0 version.
after that i open norefresh app and it crash all time. i can use multitouch but no hope with norefresh. Please help me! i will greatly appreciate! Thanks

Nicely rooted Nook Touch got "unrooted" - few thoughts

Dear fellows,
I got nicely rooted Nook Touch (and have never asked such dummy questions) with plenty of applications working on it - all of them uploaded and tested via try/error approach. Unfortunately, I did not use it for quite some time.
Now, can see:
1) the left-handed hardware buttons stopped to work - the upper one was used as a "Back" button, the one below it as a "Settings"
2) Cannot connect via adb from my laptop
3) Some programs like AdFree started to push a kind of annoying messages like "Unable to get root. I was unable to get root access, without this you cannot install a replacement hosts file", etc.
1), 2) and 3) make me think that somehow my NST got "unrooted". How can it happen and what I can do ? I am thinking of rooting it again, but will I lost all the .apk-s installed, etc..?
Any ideas really appreciated, many thanks in advance
Any help ?
Thanks in advance!
Sounds to me that your NST got updated.
Go into Settings and check your software version.
Hi ros,
I thought of this as well. Unfortunately I can't remember if it was 1.0.1 prior rooting or just 1.0.0. At the moment it is definitely 1.0.1. I saw that B&N has just released 1.1.0 too ..
As far as I remember xe-autonook.bat had the section that blocks OTA updates,
also after rooting I did not got over the official update procedure (update screens, restarts, etc.), so seems to be something else ...
Anyway, since it already happened - if I choose the option to root it again - will I destroy everything - is it rewriting /system/apps, etc.?
Thanks

Hmm, what root method did you use in the first place?
Autonooter ? The one that is using the xe-autonook.bat - replacing the uRamdisk and then doing few other steps, the bat mentioned above is just automating the procedure.
Now I did check .. and voilla - now the firmware is 1.1.0, so basically the OTA update took place and that's why the NST got unrooted. Do you see any possibilities beside rooting from scratch ? I just want to keep the installed applications and settings
Thanks

Use TouchNooter, it'll reroot you and you don't have to wipe /data
Great, thanks Gabrial!
Will try 1.11.20, which seems to be compatible to NST 1.1.
Result:
- su on terminal emulator is behaving as expected
- GMail running (never could get it running before)
- Market running (the same as GMail - never got running it before, used Amazon Appstore due to this reason)
...
- thankful, great and nice work, when I saw the bottom left sign on the initial ("Rooted Forever") window - "GabrialDestruir", I just realized who replied to me, cheerz!
Hi guys,
However I am wondering whether should I find a way to disable the OTA updates or whether to wait and receive the B&N and then reroot (as I did now for 1.1) ?
Thanks again
Is there no way of stoping the autoupdate? I worked a lot on that install ...
Thanks!

rootet touch hangs at start up

Hi
I rootet my new touch with TouchNooter, black screen showed up, removed sd card, now it hangs at start up (floating points never stop floating)....
What could be the reason? How to proceed. I already tried rooting again, same result.
Thanks for your help.
Olivier
Ok, I did a hard reset (8 boots) and am now in what I think could be the rooted touch: Android GUI and I see apps like youtube. But:
When I go to settings I get only the settings of nook, not the android ones: "application" is not there.
And: is it possible to install astro filemanager (or similar) without market running?
Thanks for a hint here.
Olivier
edit: I think I rooted it successfully now, but I cannot access the android settings..... What I am doing wrong. When I go to home/settings it always shows: Device Info/Wireless/Screen/Time/Reader/Shop/Social/Search. Where do I find the android settings?? Im getting crazy about this :-(
edit2: Ok, For the noobs like me: You can find a lot of settings in nookcolorsettings. If you encounter problems rooting a new simple touch, do a hard reset, update to 1.1 and root again. You can install apk with adb. Search for the nook touch usb drivers (they only installed after several attempts).
It works now!!

[Q] Multitouch and the NTG

I attempted to use the multitouch kernel with clockwork mod after rooting my glowlight and for some reason it seems to have hosed the glowlight controls completely. I was hoping that the n2t recovery by ros87 would help but the server hosting the image is not working. Does anyone have a mirror of the image?
EDIT: In my panic I didn't check the entire thread and found a dropbox mirror of the file further on in the thread. Let this serve as a warning to first stay calm and also not to attempt multitouch on the NTG. Sorry if I wasted your time.

Here you go.
Just wait for a NTG modded kernel, dont use the device specific resources for the NST.
Thanks for the quick response and the advice which I will be sure to remember. Any idea how long it's going to take to port multitouch to the NTG

It'll take about the amount of time for whoever brought multitouch to the Nook Simple Touch to download the source for NTG and then make the appropriate changes. That's if they even care.
Hi,
the kernel in the attachment should work for the NTG. I patched it a month ago and totally forgot to upload it .
Works also on the normal NST.
The zip file includes only the kernel, its not flashable by cwm, you have to push it manually to your boot partition and add the permissions in the xml-file.
Git-Repository: https://github.com/mali1/NST-kernel_115
Thank you. Is it possible to replace the uimage in the original CWM zip with this one and do the same thing as for the nst or should I follow the directions in the original thread which if I understand right involves burning noogie to an sdcard then then booting the nook up, connecting it to a computer, finding uimage and replacing it.

Yes, that should work.
Hello everybody!
I haму some questions about this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24180134
Can I use this method if I had already NST [email protected] with root? I want get multitouch, NoRefresh and usb-host.
All what I should to do is just replace uImage through Noogie?
This particular thread is regarding Multitouch on the Nook Touch Glow, not the Nook Simple Touch.

I've installed this kernel on my NTG and it works great. Thanks!
>>you have to push it manually to your boot partition and add the permissions in the xml-file
Using Root Explorer, where do I have to copy the (extracted kernel) file to (exact path/folder)?
Add permissions: Can I do that in Root Explorer rather than opening the xml file (filename?)? I do not have an editor for xml files....(which one would you recommend if I cannot change the permissions directly using Root Explorer)?
Thanks!

Glowlight not working
Hello,
I have a problem with my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight that I hoped you could help me with.
I rooted it and it was working fine. Then, I tried to add the multitouch mod, but I think it was for the NST, and now the glowlight doesn't work at all. I did not have a backup, unfortunately. I tried doing a factory reset and rerooting, but when it gets to the "try the glowlight" part of the setup. I can't go any further because the light doesn't work. How do I fix this problem?
Thanks,
Joe
Glow + multitouch + Norefresh?
After rooting my Glow I downloaded and installed the .zip I found in another thread to enable multi touch and an APK that was to enable NoRefresh. The norefresh didnt work at all and the multi touch worked but killed the glowlight. Now I understand what happened, but basically i ended up with the kernal for the NST that enabled Multitouch.
After downloading and ADB pushing the the kernal that has both Glow and MultiTouch I am satisfied but not completely happy. I would really want the addition of norefresh but I have not been able to find a kernal that has all three.
USB host would not be a bad thing to have also, as long as it doesn't hose the battery life. It isn't a required component for my needs.
I've been looking around to see who has been working on this.
As mentioned elsewhere, EpdController has been changed in 1.2 which will break anything designed to play with Epd modes.
I've no experience or real interest in "NoRefresh" since for what I want
it's better to integrate Epd control at the application level, which I do.
Oh, I should have mentioned. I am at 1.1.5. I used Glownooter because I wanted the Market access, utilizing the Search Market tool. As far as I could tell, the rooting methods that work on 1.2 don't include Market capability.
If I could update to 1.2 and keep market that would be cool. It might be that any dev work has been scrapped for 1.1.5 as that is an old version.
here is multitouch for nook glowlight, it is in zip format for installing with CWM, I made it changing the uimage file for the rigth one in the NST CWM zip file from the first post
I have tried it in my nook glow with firmware 1.2, spanish language, and previously rooted with glownooter, I had installed too the norefresh toggle previously, it works like a charm with opera browser, and of course light is working
I installed it after previously have done with the no glow version and having lost my light, so it works also as an amendment to this failure

Being that your friend is bad with technology, he might prefer having a NST running 1.1.2 rooted than 1.2 rooted, as side-loading anything on 1.2 post rooting is kind of tedious.
Would this work? http://lifehacker.com/5889158/turn-a-99-nook-into-a-fully-fledged-android-tablet-in-four-easy-steps It says That it will work on any firmware. Is that true?

I think that won't work. You need to use tinynoot or Nookmanager to root 1.2.0. I think it would be better for your friend to roll back to an older version like 1.1.0 so it is easier to install apps.
And how exactly would he be able to do that? Thanks.

I.
- get a micro sd card
- install CWR on it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360994&highlight=cwr )
download : http://code.google.com/p/nst-recovery/downloads/list
- copy 'nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip' ti msdcard
- copy 'MinimalTouch 1.1beta5' to msdcard ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748&highlight=cwr )
II . now using CWR
- wipe data/cache partition
- install 'nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip'
- boot the nook
- register your device
- download 1.1.2 update ( http://su.barnesandnoble.com/nook/n...XTLrBeYy5CHbHS264o9Ujsh/nook_1_1_2_update.zip )
- put the update file onto your nook (internal memory)
- put your device to sleep
- wait for the update to end
III
back to CWR
- 'install zip from SD card'. First 'MinimalTouch 1.1beta5_START'.
- boot the nook
- do the Youtube, gmail registration thing ( follow the instructions)
- install 'MinimalTouch 1.1beta5_END'
- DONE!
now you should have a FW 1_1_2 Rooted Nook with market working.
- Now head to this thread in choose one of the kernels that allows Multitouch, NoRefresh and FastMode
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906507
- from my expirience this one is the most stable one :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1379995&d=1349510309
it works with Multitouch, NoRefresh, USB-Host and FastMode.
-install it using ADB ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24168019#post24168019 )
- if you don't want to use/configure ADB... you can install different kernel with '.zip' extension using CWR (try v 166)
[to get ADB working use any tutorial you can find in google/yandex/baidu etc.
eg. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387527]
- That is it.. to get 'NoRefresh' to work you have to install NoRefreshToggle
https://github.com/marspeople/NoRefreshToggle/downloads
- to get FastMode, install FastMode.apk ( if you use img file get it from one of the 'zip' files)
If you use 'zip' files..apk installs itself.
- to get USB-Host to work .. install NullKbd.apk and USB-Mode.apk from Renate's site
http://d-h.st/users/Renate/?fld_id=3860#files
Uff... next time...look for the answers on the forum before asking on a new thread (lurk moar).
thanks
P.S.. when you are done.. install 'Legacy_Launcher' and remove 'ADW_Launcher'
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wordpress.chislonchow.legacylauncher&hl=en
the latest 'ADW_Launcher' update looks terrible on NOOK.. and the market.apk will suggest that you can update the 'ADW_Launcher'.
You can also try to use 'ReLaunch' as your default launcher
https://github.com/yiselieren/ReLaunch/downloads
- To search for Apk's in Market use SearchMarket.apk
latest version
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=youten.redo.searchmarket&hl=en

I'm using 1.2 firmware and rooted the same way as you did.
I've burned CWM to an sd card http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360994
and installed the CWM zip #174 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906507 that installs a new kernel, fast mode, and enable multitouch.
But fastmode didn't worked so far, just multitouch, seems like 1.2 broke it.
Regarding display modes: EpdController is different under 1.2

I'm new and not a programmer, but 1.2 didn't break fastmode itself, just the activation method. Someone wrote a script to work around it:
