Market working on the vega 1.8 firmware

No need to install modaco R6 as it is not fully compatible with the latest vega firmware 1.8. Just follow these simple instructions and it will be working without any add-ons at all. CWM people will probably have to do it via the recovery.
Just download the attachment with the vega, go to settings, software tool, software update and point it to where you got the downloaded file. The vega will reboot and you will have a full working market. It will be the old version the first time you launch it but it will update itself. After that just install maps, youtube and everything else google. The only thing I'm having trouble installing is the official twitter app.

hi guys, i'm having issues trying to install market. i have tried this file and the one from o_g. with no luck. i can dl find and execute the file. when i comes to reboot i get the android out of the box symbol (which i'm assuming is bad ?)and have to power down the vega to get it to boot again, without market ? any ideas ? i have little knowledge of android (phone related only) and am a bit stumped.

You're welcome. There are some apps I have difficulty in finding in the market. I think it's due to the market trying to aquire location. I cannot install the official twitter app either. Trying to find solutions.

No, you don't necessarily need it but it doesn't hurt if you do. It has to be done via recovery if you do though, different process. What firmware have you got?

The android out of the box symbol is fine thats when it is flashing the files. there should be a progress bar that turns orange, after that happens the device should reboot its self. The only requirement is you are running stock v1.08.

I have noticed launcher pro does not show in the market had to install manually. i have tried changing the market files, but that does not work, so it might be as you say down to location, or i think it could be to do with are device name on the market, maybe advent does not want us to have those apps. I cant remember where the device name is. I will have to look further.

Thanks o_g, there is no progress bar? And if i leave the vega notfhing happens. Running stock 1.08. I'm wonering if i have been sent a second or a return. The battery was fully charged out of the box and the screen polythene had most definately been removed and replaced. Need to do some more reading methinks

Thanks for the assistance guys, my memory card was the culprit. I had swapped it for a bigger one, and not copied the contents. Sorted now tho now to get flash working properly

If I did this to my vega on the 25th January when it was delivered. what symptoms might present?
It seems to be working well bar "horizontal line gfx glitches" occasionally on the screen.

It works ok, you need to delete some of the apk's out of files/system/app. things like car home can be deleted and other little things. Like that it will not run out of space when you install it and it will not give you errors. This is just another option, that's all. Some more goodies will come along from modaco and xdadev like the new R7 rom addon that were made specifically for the 1.08 firmware.

been trying to do this for over 2 wks

TouchNooter 1.6.24 for 1.1

which uRamdisk to Replace into touchnooter-1.6.24 to make it work on 1.1 is not clear (there are 2 of them).
The answer is ONLY /nooter/boot/uRamdisk (don't touch the one in the root)
with this configuration (and the framework.jar) i got it to work on the first boot, no need to make the 3 boots sequence.
concluding (starting from an 1.1 virgin system):
download touchnooter-1-6-24.zip
extract touchnooter-1-6-24.img
download one of those uRamdisk
download framework.jar
replace ONLY /nooter/boot/uRamdisk in touchnooter-1-6-24.img
replace framework.jar in touchnooter-1-6-24.img
write touchnooter-1-6-24.img on the SD
just 1 boot as usual to the android welcome page,
then remove the SD,
reboot,
double skip as usual
NookColorTools - disable and re-enable non market apps (uncheck and check it again),
Youtube (error 401),
Gmail
and finally...
Market (install at least 1 application with this version, search doesn't work)
now (after you have installed 1 app) eventually replace Vending.apk with this to enable search
i also putted this inside my touchnooter, the 2 .jar into the framework directory and the apk into the app but this shouldn't be necessary...
this is how it worked for me, enjoy

I think what you are addressing is exactly apeine's problem:
changed both uramdisk ... Booted with SD in and it either locks up or goes to regular nook (on 12 tries, 10 lock ups and 2 going to regular nook)

Incidentally, how long did it take to boot and work on the first try? With 1.0.1 firmware I rooted three nooks and left it for over 30 minutes on the first one without success. Then on the other two I was impatient and gave it two boots. So I never let 1.1.0 go on that long before rebooting since I assumed it was going nowhere.

In my case it took slightly longer than a normal boot, no freeze at all, just about 1-2 minute on "Rooted Forever", then some time, may be 1-2 minutes on the nook dots screen with the dots moving (they never froze) and then the android guy page, no more than 4-5 minutes globally.
Anyway when i used touchnooter on 1.0.1 the first time, i had to reboot 2 times as you reported, same problem, more or less, may be the freezing at boot is something which happens, but not regularly

No idea, never bought an app, just free ones, but to keep an .apk backup is always a safe choice

You can re-install purchased apps from Market whenever you want.

btw 1 EUR was not a big pain (I tried ADW launcher and rotation before, but it was not really convenient)

As long as you have market working with your prior GMail account, you should have no problem redownloading both your free and paid apps.

I first installed Astro File Manager, which is the second one in the list under the "Productivity" -> "Top Free". This allows me to install Vending.apk (Market where the search function works), and then follow it with Titanium Backup.
Using Titanium Backup re-installed all the apps from my previous backup, plus installed the XorZone's NookTouchTools for 1.1 (jars are different from 1.0.1).
I'm not sure what the significant difference is between the firmwares, but I understanding that the screen refresh is a bit quicker, and that the battery report is more accurate (previously batt reading would fluctuate when first turned on).
As for the firmware upgrade.... my STR just did not want to download the upgrade, even though I set the screensaver to 1 hour. There could be several reason why this didn't work, such that I don't live in US, or the process of rooting had modified something (even thought I factory reset it).
In the end I just connected it using USB, and loaded it into the root directory of the my STR (a simply file copy in Windows XP). Then the upgrade started a minute after the copy.

I find this thread interesting and helpful. I have noted that a lot of the information here, on nook developers, or in two articles I read (one in lifehacker.com and the other in Que Publishing) all contain help that includes links to files that are either not there or I can't find.
Can someone point me to a current simple solution that will allow me to root my nook and toggle between the original home screen and the better Android one?

ButtonSaviour should have been installed with the Root, so just look for a transparent(translucent?) arrow button thing on the right screen, near the middle. It might be hard to hit it. The Home button on that will be like hitting the Home button on a normal Android device, and when you press the Quick Nav button, the home on that will lead to the B&N home unless you used Xor's mods to change what it leads to.

[Q] Updating to 1.1 on touchnooter rooted touch

I have a Touch rooted with Touchnooter. My touch doesn't seem to want to update to 1.1 (I know doing so will kill GAPPS, but I'm okay with that). I've waited for the update to be pushed and I've also put the update file in my Nook directory. Is there something about Touchnooter that prevents the Touch from updating?

I haven't tried to update after using touchnooter, dont really know if it blocks nothing, OTA or prevents from updates, OTA or manullay, but you should restore a copy of your nook if you have it, or use nookrestore and then force a reset to also delete /data.
Or use adb to force restore
adb shell
echo -n -e "\x08\x00\x00\x00" > /rom/devconf/BootCnt

and then reset normally and if it dosnt let you, force reset, force it shutting down your nook, then starting it up, and when the screen flickers press right and left bottom buttons, hold for 5+ seconds.
That will erase /system (restore) and /data (reset), and you should be able to update.

I do have a backup copy, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to do a restore to get the update. I mean, I'd really like to avoid that.
Have others been able to update their Touchnooter Touches to 1.1 without reverting?

Updating a TouchNootered NST have caused troubles in the past and is likely to do so with this update as well.
Even if it worked for other users it might not work for you as people do different things to their rooted NST.
I know it's a hassle, but you should really restore+reset your NST before updating if you want to avoid problems.

The OP's post has given me some hope as I do not wish to unroot/re-root-/update at this time, but have kept my NST's wireless off as I'm afraid of getting the update.
Am I to understand that a TouchNooter'd unit (1.6.24 on an NST1.0.1) will not get updated and there is nothing to fear?

There's nothing in TN 1.6.24 that will block updates.
If you want to make sure, here's the cleanest way of doing so:

Yes, it's a Nook Color thread but it would work for Nook ST aswell.

As regards the adb/sqlite method, I just reviewed that thread and the specific "Blocking OTA Updates" section. Looks easy,... assuming one thing: that -- other than installing java JKD and the android SDK on my PC -- my NST (TouchNooter'd 1.6.2.4 on B&N1.0.1) already is set up to receive those commands listed. If it is, then I can simply connect the NST and type only those commands listed in the "Blocking OTA Updates" section. Right?
If that's not the case, what other procedures must I do in order to get it done? For instance, there are sections entitled "Setting up adb on the nook touch" and "Setting up root access on NST through adb and installing busybox". Would I need to do any part of those processes?
Much obliged if you can clear up that one matter for me!

I wonder if it would keep downloading/deleting the update file in a perpetual cycle, though. Isn't that what would happen?

Touchnooter has adb enabled over wifi (If i'm not wrong), so you wouldnt have to enable it again, go directly into the OTA.

You should be good to go if you install jdk + android sdk.
With TouchNooter 1.6.24 you should allready have adb access enabled via wifi.

That is my guess. Without knowing for sure you're left with two unpleasant options:
1) Your nook tries to update continuously: downloading, deleting, and wasting battery life,* or
2) Your nook actually updates and destroys everything!
So you might take the time to "block" OTA updates as other have mentioned. But then there's option...
3) You go through the rigors and just get the 1.1.0 firmware upgrade over and done with, rerooting afterwards.
*I wonder if this is related to the "I rooted my nook and now my battery life is toast" thread?

This is an excellent point. I've also experienced pretty sad battery life since applying Touchnooter.
I'll just bite the bullet and restore/re-root.

A good and interesting guess.
There are intervals defined for the update checks, but maybe if it finds an update but are unable to apply it, it end up in a loop..

GApps aren't actually that hard to enable if you use TouchNooter 1.6.24 and manually replace /nooter/boot/uRamdisk and /system/framework/framework.jar with the updated versions. Other than that step, very little difference in the rooting processes. If one is going to restore to factory and build up from there, what is the advantage to wading through all the manual steps?

At this moment, fun, learning, and stability (for the moment it allways works, but I need more feedback from people that tried it) eventually, when I delete all the blob that Gapps dosn't need for them to work, and is installed on the default package of Touchnooter (Don't get me wrong I really think its a great method) you will get a cleaner install.
Anyway, If you don't want to go through all the steps you can use the new 1.1 Touchnooter to get root, and then use my GApps method.

The steps below work on Windows 7 (Not sure if will work on Windows 8.. If so let's us know) Make sure you have Administrator Rights to install software and run executable programs etc.
The HP Slate 7 Extreme has a few different models; mine is the 4400us and I am rooted with the steps in this guide, if you have the 4400us this guide should work for you. If you have a different model it may or may not work (one person couldn't Root their 4407ra). If you could let us know either way that might help others.
It is always a good idea to remove any android software from your PC before using that PC to minimize software conflicts {with the exception of Android Debugging Bridge ( ADB )... It might aid in windows finding device drivers (see link below in steps if needed)}
Make sure you have done BOTH system Updates on you Tablet! From 4.2 to 4.3..... Then from 4.3 to 4.4.2!
(System updates can be found in Settings/About Tablet)
Make sure USB Debugging is enabled on your HP Slate 7 Extreme... (This is very important)
(to do so you will need to Enable THE HIDDEN "Developer options”...
Go to Settings/About Tablet then start tapping on the " Build number" line! (No I'm not kidding)
After a few taps you will see on screen messages counting down how many more taps needed to be a Developer... Just keep tapping till done.
Then go back to Settings Menu... Scroll down to bottom and you will see "{} Developer options” open it and enable "USB debugging" by checking the box.)
Turn on install from "Unknown Sources"
(Found in: Setting/Security)
Also.. disable any lock screen that requires pin, password, Face Unlock, or pattern
I turned my screen timeout to 30 min so it doesn't sleep etc
NOW LETS ROOT .....
Download Moborobo http://www.moborobo.com/
Download Shuame's ROOT Genius http://www.shuame.com/en/root/
Install Moborobo & Run Program
Plug Tablet into PC with it's factory USB cable
Your Windows PC should start looking for and downloading drivers (look down in Windows notification area by clock..click on the icon that is searching for drivers so you can see when finished
...don't worry if one of them says failed)..
just let Moborobo find and install needed drivers etc
note: you will see something you need to authorize on Tablet screen.. so do so!!!!
Now look in notification pull down panel and you should see that Moborobo installed an app on your Tablet... Click to open once then just hit the home button once on Tablet.

Once your ready to move on.. ( Meaning: Moborobo sees your Tablet..) NOW run ROOT Genius (just Minimize Moborobo)
Root Genius will do it's thing (your Tablet Will Reboot during Process)
Profit (you are Rooted)
Use "ROOT Checker Basic" free in Play Store to ensure you are Rooted!
Note: Root Genius installs a super user app called "Kinguser" during the root process.. (which is also an app backup tool and has tool to disable apps from automaticly starting).

Please Note: that as of the date of this post.. there is NOT a custom Recovery for this Device. Do Not use any Recovery from other Devices like the Tegra Note 7 (you will brick your device). So that means don't use apps like Flashify etc.

What Windows OS are you using? I used Win 7 to root.

I just rooted a 2nd Slate 7 Extreme.. got the wife one as well... And all worked well.
I have made Opening Post easier to read... And added troubleshooting steps throughout the guide to aid during Rooting Process.

Root .. failed
I couldn't get it to work either, goes through a lot of reboots and the says :
"Such a tough phone!"

Maybe it works on a partciular region of Slate 7 Extreme ? I'm in New Zealand (probably same tablet as Australia)

Is your Tablet on KitKat 4.4.2? Is you Tablet the Business Version (might have more security)? I'm in the United States (model number 4400us)

I looked at both tablet's specs online and they are identical. Are you updated to KitKat 4.4.2

Another thought.. Did you enable the "Install from Unknown Sources".. reason I ask is because thought out the process of rooting.. it needs to install a couple apps on your Tablet (which you can remove after rooting)?

Yes.. should work fine for 4.3... however...I would update to 4.4 before rooting.. if you can... so you don't have to go through process again to move to 4.4 later.

Great! Just tried your method and .........It worked like a charm! Just one last question; is it possible to install a recovery mode of some kind? Ideally, I'd like to make a nandroid backup.

No recovery has been made for this device to my knowledge.
Do not try a different device's recovery... I recently bricked a device doing so!

This worked!! I did it on my 4.3 tablet, so easy! Thank you justjayhere! :good:

Nook Simple Touch Glowlight .. Need advice before rooting.

Please .. I need some advice..
This is my first post. My sister has given me her Nook Simple Touch Glowlight. I would like to root it, as I've been looking for a device to keep notes and stuff on. I went as far as booting up with noogie.img and backing up the firmware. I don't know what to do, because I read that having a certain firmware changes everything? I don't think my sister updated the nook. Here is the information from the Settings / Device Info / About Your Nook.
Software Version: 1. 1. 5
Model Number: BNRV350
I read someplace that the sizes of the firmwares are different. The simple touch is 1. 82 and the simple touch glow is 1. 86.
Mine is 1 .82, but yet it has the glowlight? It says to hold the button down for two seconds to turn it on.
I see that B&N have new firmware for the nst & nstg. 1. 3 I believe. It said on the site that this firmware would be installed when the nook is idle. (via wifi) Anyway, I'm wondering if it would be ok to go ahead and root the thing, or upgrade the firmware first to maybe - 1. 2 (if I can find it?) before I do anything else? Oh and should I stay away from B&N's new 1. 3 firmware?

If you indeed have the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight (black bezel), then the most recent stock firmware is 1.2.1 which can be downloaded here. I would recommend that you update to this as the first thing you do. Next you need to decide which of the multitude of rooting methods is best for you. You need to take into account what you wish to achieve by rooting the Nook and your skill/comfort level with the processes. I have followed many of the different processes, doing a factory reset between root versions. By far the easiest is Nook Manager. I, personally, prefer the Minimal rooting - back to basics method because it allows you to install just what YOU want. However, this method requires a fair amount of command line work.
EDIT: I made the assumption that you are in the US and have a US model. I believe there is a different firmware number for the international model. In any case, you should update the Nook to the most recent firmware before rooting.

I downloaded the correct 1. 2. firmware for the nook and I (like you) would rather install what I want to and have more control over what gets put on it. After I update the firmware, I'll come back and follow the links you provided. If you know what threads have the latest / newest info on rooting the nstg, can you please point me to it? You're welcome. If you are comfortable with a lot of manual, command line manipulation, start with the Minimal rooting - back to basics thread. There are many more and newer rooting methods, but each of them installs a bunch of apps that the creators use, which may or may not be of importance to you. If you start with the Minimal rooting - back to basics, you can then pick and choose the apps and modifications you want to apply to give you the best experience for YOUR needs. I am attaching the document I use to keep track of what I have done for your reference. Feel free to post any questions here.

Last night I downloaded 1.2.1 firmware and dumped it on the Nook. When I got up this morning I checked and 1.2 is installed. I looked around and found a 16gb Kingston (from GPS) SD-Card. It is only class 4, but it should be usable for the time being. I'll take a look online for a class 10. I don't know if there is any size, or class limitations, or not?
I'm at the rooting - back to basics thread. I'm going to read all this stuff over and see if I can figure it all out. Thanks again for your help and the document.

Class 4 should work just fine. Since noogie only takes ~2GB (if I remember correctly) you don't really need a card any larger than 4GB to use this method of rooting. Having 8GB or 16GB card would be useful if down the road you will make use of the card to backup your Nook ROM & user-content for ease in recovery.

Don't really know where to go from here, or what to do ..

@ david0226 .. I went to the page about rooting via the link and I have basic
understanding how / what needs to be done, but I'm not having much
luck finding and using the tools. I went and looked for the file used to
extract the 2 files from uRamdisk, but I couldn't find it. I did some reading
and looking around and found a program called Preboot (I think) by
Intel and it contained bootutil 32/64 and so on. I had to install preboot & then
uninstall it, to get bootutil and then install it. I tried using it to extract
the files, but I kept getting failed messages. Like invalid switch /x.
Invalid switch /v. Invalid file uRamdisk. I know I need to extract out 2
files: init.rc and default.prop. I tried to do so in the "Administrative Command
Window" on Win7_64bit, but it just wouldn't work with bootutil. Not the
one I had anyway. Any ideas? Thanks!

What extensions does "Extended Power Menu" provide?
Also, which uImage and uRamdisk do you use as uRecImg and uRecRAM?

Clockworkmod based Recovery post #75, see the entire thread here.
If you are going to do the Extended Power Menu, be sure to do the Clockworkmod based Recovery also or you risk wiping out everything you have done by accidentally hitting recovery in the Extended Power Menu. I you have installed Clockworkmod Recovery and accidentally hit "Recovery", it will just boot to Clockworkmod and give you a chance to back out.

Yes, I had to go to her profile and I found it there. I'll do this part first and see how it goes. After that (I think?) I need to get an android program (some kind of Installer maybe?) to do some other work with. Anyway, one step at a time. All for now. Thanks! ... WS.

Class 2 and 4 will do just fine, in my case I used 520 Mb microSD card for installing various ROMs, tried quite a lot of them, always worked fine.

Almost done, but need a little more help . . .

Just getting to the point where I'm ready to add programs. have edited uRamdisk and re-installed the two files. I've download android-sdk package and have installed it. I have been in the nook via wifi using ndb shell as root. I am now following your notes file. I've created the archive folder on the nook - /system/archive and I've been moving files over from /system/apps folder. I got Nook Manager written to the sd-card and I have PackageInstaller.adk from it, but I I'm not sure how I get that onto the nook. When I boot with NookManager, it ask if I want to root. I have already done that and it is working. Should I let it do it anyway?

Connect to the Nook with adb then exit the adb shell back to your Windows command prompt. Once back at the command prompt, you should be able to install any package using this command ...
adb install {package_name.apk}

Just paid $5 for a BNRV350 at a rummage sale.
I understand BN disabled the web browser with the current operating system.
I can get a Google search window (by repeated tapping on the "Google" or maybe the "404" or the "that's all" links that appear when I try the "connect to social" settings menu choice for Google. And "find my account" worked when given the Gmail userid (because the keypad on the Nook lacks a period for typing a proper email address, in this view).
And I can get a Twitter login page. Neither works well -- typing even a single letter into the password field resets the page, so it's letter, then tap in the field window, then another letter, then tap in the field window. Sometimes it shows a row of dots for characters already entered, other times those are invisible but the entries are still there.
Just curious to add to the above fellow's thread for anyone searching for this Nook model number, if anyone has advice or suggestions about making it useful.
Reverting to the original OS to have use of the web browser would be a welcome option, if that's possible. Pointers welcome. Right now this Nook has version 1.1.5 installed -- I gather that's one of the improved versions that killed the stock web browser.
