I do not take credit for this fix. I just came across it on phandroid.com Check this out:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-sup...id-browser-different-pinch-zoom-behavior.html
I hope this helps some of you!
I actually used it and it does help. I didn't notice but now that I did, I'm questioning why I even used the other way
So people don't have to hunt for it:
I was able to disable this annoying zooming behavior on my HTC Incredible with stock Android 2.2/Sense. Here are the steps I went through: Enable debugging options by typing "about:debug" into browser address bar. Then go to Menu > More > Settings. Scroll down to settings under "debug" heading. You should see the option "Enable GEP zoom", and it will be turned off. Turning it on will give you the Google zooming behavior.

Awesome tip, thank you for bringing to my attention.
Agreed great tip!
Dude thanks!
I like that...thanks op. And the other op

So basically this disables the reflow of text when zooming in the browser. I don't notice a difference in smooth zooming, both on and off it looks the same to me. The difference like I said is reflow of text. I like that function so I will have to leave the setting as off.
it works great, but you have to keep on going into debug mode to use it
Doesn't bring up a menu.. I get a java toolbox. Running fresh.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
This does prevent the reflow of text, but it does fix one annoyance I've had since i got the EVO.
In a modern smartphone browser, the page should follow your fingers as you zoom. So where ever you touch on the page should follow your fingers as you spread/close them. This means that if one finger stays still and the other one moves, the page should stay put under the finger that hasn't moved. This is the way other browsers work and it helps to zoom so that you can expand the page and keep it centered where you want to see. The EVO browser does not work this way. Try it and see. Keep one finger still and the page will still move under the still finger. Grr.. You have to zoom then let go and recenter on the area of interest. However, checking this option makes the zoom work properly this way. This is at the cost of reflowing the text, which I rather like though. So its a tough call which way I would like more.
Anyhow, thanks OP. Nice find
After doing the fix, does anyone have the problem of it reverting back to the old style, even if the box is checked?
Nothing pops up when I type about:config into my browser.

Yup, I had that problem. So I just downloaded that dolphin browser to fix the zoom
Pushed the updated one to my phone, starts to play the startup sound, then hangs.

Typing about:debug will not pop up anything. It will add new menus in settings.
The changes you do in the debug menu are temporary. The browser goes back to normal settings after its been closed.
Can someone try to port over the desire(flashable) version of this?

Did you try to flash it yourself? I'm going to flash it in a bit...
Edit: It works, just looks ugly as balls, gonna do a little work on it..
Edit2: Im going to take a guess and say that the only thing edited is the debug xml file, so im assuming that if you replace the xml file from our browser.apk with the one from theirs, it should work. im doing that right now.
I personally tried to flash it but got fc.

Holy sh##, I wonder if thats what happened to mine then.... I had it for 3 hours, installed extended controls on it, turned the brightness all the way down and it died. Battery pull would get me the samsung screen but it would stop after the galaxy animation. I did a factory reset, still did it.
Is that about the same?
I figured that I just had a bad unit so I took it back to the store.
Edit. Just did a little research and we are not the only two this has happened to...not seeing a fix though...
If you have cwm installed or debug enabled you should just adb to your device and delete the offending widget app.

man, that sucks.
Happened to me too... If only we had the notification brightness slider the vibrant has. I had to take miner back too... Didn't know of cwm and I was smart enough to turn debugging mode off so no adb for me.

It persisted after a factory reset on mine. Offending app was all gone... Will be interesting to see if the op can get his working by doing that. Personally I just thought I had a bad phone.

Awesome. Wonder why my factory reset didn't fix mine... Weird.
Bigger question... What do the application developers need to change too keep this from happening?
well the truth in my case is i downloaded a version off mediafire to see if i liked it before i donated and the thing was the version i downloaded had an error that to this day has been corrected. so if i wouldve just been legit from the beginning it wouldnt of happened
I always keep adb on after this lesson...

Extended trial eh? looked at extended controls change log, none on theirs yet. Guess I'll try power widget instead.
I was a victim of this as well with the extended controls widget. I emailed them and they didn't seem overly concerned, though to be fair there is a language barrier. I would have expected profuse apologies and a refund, at the very least.
I use the one called "Backlight!" but when I installed and saw the default value levels of 0,50,150,255 and saw a zero that instantly threw up a red flag. Before using widget I just edited the custom brightness levels to 34,65,103 which translates to 13%,25%,45%. Are there other devices where you could assign the toggle to a hard button? That's the only way I can see having a 0 default level on a device.
good day.
I submitted a ticket to the extended controls group and they just updated it after fixing the issue... Said it is now fixed and will be in the next release.
this has been posted in the forum, the phone still works, the display is just completely blacked out. 0% apparently meant different for the Samsung Fascinate phones than other Android phones. Power Control widget had updated their log a few days ago saying this was resolved in the last update here:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/power-control-plus-(widget)/com.siriusapplications.eclairwidgets
good thing the brand new version that i tried to pay for still blacked out my screen
Thank God I found this thread! Same here!! Power Strip. Was so depressed when I noticed I couldnt wake my screen back up after boot and locking it! Phew.... AWESOME PHONE!
Yea this happened to me as well and I didn't have de bugging on to use adb. Took it to the store they were like "we have never seem this happen before...sorry sure have this new one!" LoL
Sent from my rooted 1.2 voodoo Fascinate
Mine did it from a Ringer Profile app. I was trying to get my Fascinate to act more like a Blackberry in regards to notifications and such. All seemed well until I re3booted the phone. I went through 2 phones from this. The app did have functions for setting screen brightness for different profiles. Since I got that one solved, the phone's been great!
Thanks to the power connector/audio connector being on the top of the phone... I'd like to figure out if theres a way to make this phone flip the screen when you put it in a car dock... any ideas?
i use alarm clock plus and it reorientates the screen for left tilt and right tilt in dock mode, but not upside down. im sure it wouldnt be too hard to figure out.

Yup, 270 degree rotation is a feature of FroYo for this phone. It works on several apps like GPS as well as in the settings menus. I think I remember seeing a line of code somewhere here that allowed you to enable or disable 270 degree rotation so it did not rotate to the right. So maybe enabling 360 degree rotation wouldn't be that hard?

The issue isn't 360 degrees (which would be back to "normal"), it's 180 degrees. The rotation lets you have only 3 rotations: 0 (normal), 90 (right side on bottom) and 270 or -90 (left side on bottom). I guess they thought that nobody would want 180 (top on bottom) for whatever reason.

you're absolutely right, I have no idea what I was thinking? I guess I meant 360 all the way around, to include 180..but that's definitely not what came out.
but I agree, I doubt I would really ever use the 180 degree position, but to have it enabled would be nice. Kind of like an iPad, you can use it no matter which way you pick it up.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab does this also! So if someone wants to work this out it would be pretty awesome

My old(now bricked epic) had full 360 degree rotation, including upside down.
I was running Vision Kernel 1.2(however, I'd recommend trying 1.1 since 1.2 has been causing bricks)
Not sure if it includes it, but i know it was working upside down on mine the other day.

I actually flashed a bunch of kernels in a few days, it may have been Genocide.
I'm running SRF 1.1.
And I only noticed it because I picked up my phone at what I thought was upright position and went to hit the menu button and realized I was pressing where the FFC is.
If I can figure out what combo allowed it, I'll be glad to let you know.
I cant remember, but isnt it a custom launcher function, given youre on froyo?? Idunno... just tried and I cannot, midNight current version w journaling, launcherpro. Maybe ADW launcher??? I know I have had it on a few different setups, but idunno who actually implements it... put it in Q&A with the question in the title... im sure any dev knows... Genocide kernel may be it, I have only tried the very early releases of it. But I know it is definitely not an option of SRF 1.1, as that is what I am running. I was running Vision kernel 1.2 with SRF up until last night (switched back to twilight) and didn't have the option, but if you could figure out what combo you had that produced this, it would be great!

Custom launcher may be it too, I have never used anything but TW and launcher pro. LP doesn't have this option, that's what I am running and that's what comes with SRF 1.1. I think this option has to be rom based, or maybe it is within the kernel, I do not know.

I use LP Sense UI, but I just tried recreating it and only got 270 degree rotation.
I KNOW I'm not crazy, aha. Hmm, I'm going to take a look at the framework and see if I can't figure out a way to enable it for any ROM.
EDIT: Just remembered my build environment got wiped when I reformatted PC.
Regardless, the file that controls rotation should be in /system/framework.jar, if someone has a build enviroment, they can take a look at the XML.
This is assuming, of course, that Samsung didn't make a crazy change and hide it elsewhere.

I just dug this up from an old thread, is there something similar to this we can do? This is the way to disable 270 degree rotation, and just keep 90 degree (although people in the thread kept calling it 180 degree rotation)

Its not in the framework, its just part of the build.prop file, thats it (sounds wayyy too simple, I know).
So basically just do the opposite, change false to true. Normally I'd use something like "Root Explorer" and edit the build.prop file in the text edit mode.

From what I can tell, this is for 2.1 only. I looked in our build.prop and this line isn't there, which makes me think it's a part of framework.jar now.

So if anybody else like me is coming from the G2 and 3 you might be missing smart screen.. That little feature that detects your face while looking at the screen to keep the screen awake instead of fading out. I personally felt it a real convenience. I would like to get it back, I pulled the app from my G3 titled wise screen. I installed it like a normal app with success. I used activity launcher to try and launch it, but it fc's. So I'm guessing we'll need root to get it functional. When we do get root is there anyone else interested in joining me on this quest? I would really like to get this one up and running. I have to agree with you. I am so surprised they took it out. I spent 30 min on the phone trying to find it. I tried the app the other post recommended, not as good, it will never turn the phone off in the car when the phone is mounted and the car is moving.
I, too, was looking for the smartscreen settings. Was surprised that LG decided to remove it. Will try the above mentioned kinscreen later
Anyone know if Samsung removed it from the S6? They started the feature and it was one of the more useful features they added to Touchwiz. I was glad when LG copied it. Most of the other stuff was junk, but that was actually useful.
That sucks. I wonder if they removed smart screen to keep the screen from running down the battery.

On Verizon, you can see the service - it is not an app - BUT there are no Settings I can find or know of that actually allow you to activate it or interact with it in anyway. So it is "there" but seems to do nothing and cannot be setup.
EDIT: I used the hidden Verizon menu and found this "smart screen" but when you click on it, it forecloses and crashes. So, it is as if that first part of the services is there BUT the actual functionality is not as using the hidden Verizon menu I cannot activate it and access settings or turn it on to work - and I would think from that hidden menu, we should.

I also bricked my phone on Wednesday when I selected this option, but I was only partially sure that it was to blame. I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Motorola this morning, and went from a guy who barely spoke English up to a guy who was very-clearly in the USA, and they confirmed the issue and opened a bug ticket. Don't expect a fix anytime soon.

RTL is Right to Left.
Basically the option flips all things on android... so in the settings, as it reads from left to right, "wifi - on" the setting is reversed "on - wifi" sort of a setting meant for lefties.. or just those that like toggles on the left side instead of right.

All of those methods look like I actually need access to my phone, right now it won't let me in at all. Is there anything else I can use while in fastboot or recovery mode to get my files?

No, I do not think so.
Never used this feature nor am i on 5.1 but just tossin my 2 cents. What about using a OTG cable and connect a mouse to it? Not sure to what extent the phone is usable but when my aunt dropped my phome (not even a month old ooooooo i was furious. This is why i dont let people touch my phone. Luckly phone was too new and no refurbs out so they sent me a new one lol) but the digitizer and screen were cracked broken and bleeding. I was going to to fastboot since phone was stuck in camera mode for usb for helium back and no syncing programs setup yet but i tossed on my otg cable and plugged in a mouse and changed usb features, backed up apps to google drive the change usb mode and copied all my files off.
Hope that works for ya

I wish that would have fixed it, the system is responsive but 'System UI' crashes and there is 0 way to get out of it or access the system after that point. When you power on the phone you don't even make it to the lock screen it just dies.

RTL is Right to Left.
Basically the option flips all things on android... so in the settings, as it reads from left to right, "wifi - on" the setting is reversed "on - wifi" sort of a setting meant for lefties.. or just those that like toggles on the left side instead of right.

I can't tell if you're trolling or being serious.
RTL is meant to make the whole phone more convenient for lefties. Your homescreen goes from being the leftmost screen to the rightmost.
Wait, no, it's actually meant to completely **** up all our devices. Yeah, that's it.

My comment isn't relevant to this post but I just wanted to clear up the misconception about RTL. It isn't for lefties (I'm a lefty, it makes no difference to us), it's for languages that go from right to left, like Arabic. English, French, Spanish etc. go from left to right.

I really don't have a dog in this fight but heres where I got my info from, "While most of us are used to left-to-right text, menus, and whatnot, there are certainly users who’d prefer their smartphone or tablet to have right-to-left layouts. Of course, if your device’s system language is one that uses a right-to-left script (like Arabic, or Hebrew), the change from LTR to RTL is done automatically. However, Android allows you to force RTL layouts even when using a left-to-right language. "

So I'm not saying no or disagreeing, just saying that from that article, apparently RTL languages, once set in the settings automatically switch. I'll start source linking all my info from now on.
