[Q] Nexus 10 doesn't keep good network time - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a nexus 10 and a Nexus 7. Both running the latest Android (4.2.2.). Both connected to the same network (in my hotel so I have no access to any routers). Both getting the system time "from the network".
My Nexus 7 is displaying the correct time. My Nexus 10 is displaying a time which is 7 minutes slow. If I correct it manually (untick "get time from network" and correct it myself) it displays the correct time. If I then tick "get time from network", it immediately goes 7 minutes slow.
So, where is it picking the time up from? I want to compare the 10 and 7 to see why they are different. Unless someone knows the answer?
Update. I took it to work this morning and the nexus 10's time had drifted by about 15 minutes (slow). When I then set it to get the time from the network, it went back another 7 minutes.
I have no idea what is going on here - but I would like to run some commands to find out. Anyone got any suggestions?
I have used ES Explorer to look in /etc/init.d to see if there is a startup file - nothing. I've also looked in /system/bin and I cannot find a ntpd file.
Any clues appreciated
Alan

Update - after I brought it into work and it seemed to lose 10 minutes, when I switch from manually setting time to network time, it now goes back 16 minutes, not 7 (so I guess it lost 9 minutes, not 10).
There is something really weird going on here.
Alan

last update.
I had an application on there called "mini network monitor". I uninstalled that, rebooted my tablet and network time seems to be working OK now.
It may just be coincidence, but it's working, so I am not messing around.
Alan

I wonder as well about how the tab gets its time info. I live in California, but was in Arizona over the weekend and it didn't switch time, but my phones corrected themselves.

If my tablet sleeps for hours on end (overnight) it will lose EXACTLY 10 minutes. I can't explain it. I just use the clock sync app

Someone pointed me here http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39951 where this issue has been know about for a while.
Is there any chance that someone who really understands how Android works could have a look inside and see what is going on?
Alan

I've noticed this too. It always happens when I wake it up after its been sleeping overnight, and it's always 10 minutes slow. A reboot fixes it immediately for me though.

Getting a replacement didn't help anything. My new one does the exact same thing.

I posted a partial "fix" in comment #111 in the bug report.
Make sure to comment and star the report so it gets Googles attention.

I use clocksync from the market. It works well. I notice the clock quickly loses its accuracy.

I can't believe it has been 5 months now and they still haven't fixed this yet.

Did you have it set to automatically update the time zone?

Strange,...
my n10 was from the second batch Google store had available and the clock issue has never manifested itself at all. Switched over to daylight savings time this morning perfectly! However, I've never remained stock with any update any longer than it took for me to flash a custom package of ROM, kernel, and gapps....

Automatic date/time is checked in date/time settings. It sprung forward with the time change. Now that we're on the same time as AZ I will have to wait until I travel further east later in the year to assess.

Sudden Loss of Data on Nexus S

Hey guys,
This is actually my first post here but I do A LOT of reading on this forum.
I didn't quite find anything regarding my question (or at least a solid answer), however, so I've decided to post it up.
Has anyone else experienced a sudden loss of data from time to time out of nowhere?
I go from having Full Green 3G bars to grey bars out of the blue. I've heard the green bars is to let you know that you are connected to Google services but I am not able to access anything that uses data.
For instance, when I open up the browser, I receive an error telling me there is no network connection. When I open up anything else that uses a data connection, Market, News, etc, I receive the same error about there not being a connection.
This would make sense if I was moving and going in and out of service areas, but it happens when the phone is simply sitting on my desk and not moving at all. I usually use it to listen to Pandora while at work and have noticed that the songs cut in and out due to this sudden loss of a data connection.
I went from a Nexus One to the Nexus S and have never, not once, lost my full 3G bars in this same exact location. I personally believe its a software bug of some kind and have high hopes for it being fixed in the future. The N1 had similar issues when it first launched and Google / T-Mo were able to remedy that for the most part.
I am actually on my third Nexus S because the first two had some type of hardware issue; the first one's back button didn't work or light up and the second one had a blown ear speaker and would sound like a blown speaker in a car. As an early adopter, I expected this, so it didn't bother me in the least bit.
ALL of them did the same thing, so I know it is not just limited to my exact phone. This is definitely something with the Nexus S in general (or the current build of Gingerbread).
Can anyone shine some light on this situation? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work here guys!
---------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Here are a few steps that I have taken in order to solve my sudden loss of data issue. I'm not guaranteeing this will work for you, but it has worked for me and a couple of users here on the forum.
Do the following:
Activate / Use the Sim Card that came with the phone (this is to ensure you are using the latest sim cards)
Make sure you have a 4G internet plan. (No t-zones, No web2go -- FULL internet only)
Call T-Mobile and have ask them to Reset your phone with their Towers
Here's a more technical explanation posted by Johoja:
1) Having network selection set to manual ( i.e selecting 302490 or TMOBILE) will result in No Service on a reboot. Solutions: - Have to cycle airplane mode to get it to pick up service (can be done with automatically tasker) - OR Use automatic network selection. (you can force wcdma only but that will reset the SMSC which is annoying if you go in and out of wind away/home areas and you want to roam.)
2) Being in a area with no service for extended periods of time 5+minutes(subway, basement, etc) will result in a dead baseband, meaning once you come into an area with service the phone will not reacquire signal, airplane mode will not work as the baseband is now crashed, cant maunally search for a network. Have to reboot to get signal. Solutions: -Use tasker to cycle airplane mode on and off when in no service areas i.e) search signal 4 minutes, airplane mode on 10 minutes. This will keep the baseband from crashing and possibly save battery. -Use NoBars to accomplish thesamething ( taskergivesyou a bitmore flexibilty of course but harder to use) http://www.appbrain.com/app/nobars-b...omdryer.nobars - Use airplane edit to avoid turning wifi/bt off when airplane mode is on. http://www.appbrain.com/app/airplane...kalti.airplane
3) WCDMA perferred does not work. - No solution
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=747f398a6c1bb2b9&hl=en&start=40:
I read one users response on a different thread regarding something similar to the issue that I am having.
They said T-Mobile told them to get a newer sim card and that this may remedy the problem. In my case, this has been the only constant in the 3 phones that I have been through. I have had the same sim card for about 3 years or so now.
I will try activating the sim card that came in the box with T-Mo to see if this remedies the problem. Since I'm at work right now I will have to try when I get home later.
Does anyone think this will have any affect what-so-ever?
The galaxy s phones when first released, all variants, had issues of signal dropping from full to zero bars while sitting in one place. I remember because there were YouTube videos of it All over and it was shortly after the apple antenna issue.
Not sure if or how it was ever resolved. But it seems that Samsung may just have this type of radio baseband performance if we see all these individual units doing this. I don't know maybe others can respond.
I have the same issue as the OP. I travel to the same location weekly with NEXUS ONE, signal never drops in the T-MO Country here locally, and streaming CNET POD CAST never a hiccup, however, with the new NEXUS S, I would lose DATA Connection only, while the 3G will show full signal. I had to reboot the phone to get the DATA back.
is it the S issue or 2.3 issue?
food for though....
If you have T-zones or Web2go or Phones 1st web, you will have problems
I had the same problem too, now I fixed the problem. The thing was that had the wrong data plan on the NS, i had my old web plan from my hd2 which seems like different from the one for the NS. I restarted my phone after 5 mins off and now i have my internet working beautifly. A T-Mobile rep said that it was an error in the system that made the phone think that that was the right plan for the NS for a few. A glitch you may say, but all you have to do is put the right data plan that all, easy. Hope this helped and have a wonderful holidays everyone.

this is happening to me too, last night for a little while and today for about hte last 4 hours can't get connection back. i have full white bars, with 3g icon but can't access anything
So I activated the new sim card last night and I'm still having the same problem. Albeit it doesn't happen as frequent, but it still does it nonetheless.
I will call T-mo again to verify my plan. I am on a 1500 Minute Family Plan which includes unlimited data and messages. I will see if they need to tweak something and let you guys know if this remedies the problem.
Ok, it seems like the issue has been resolved after I spoke to T-Mobile earlier today.
The rep on the phone verified that the data plan I was on was in fact the correct one. He said he was going to reset the signal from the towers to my phone to see if this would resolve the issue. He asked me to turn my phone off for about 15 seconds after we hung up.
Since then, I haven't seen the problem arise again so my guess is that it somehow fixed whatever was going on.
I'll let you guys know if this changes and the problem occurs again.

What's with the CAPS? ?
On topic: i have a captivate and I can confirm that all galaxy S phones had droppend data. An official ota update fixes it so maybe you guys need to wait for something official. Isn't there a new firmware for the nexus S already? Try flashing that and see if you still have issues.

I know the Moment has that problem, after 3 updates samsung called it quits, I still have to reboot mine 2 to 3 times a day for data lockups.
@timur525 Yea, I'm already on 2.3.1.
I manually updated the first hour it came out hoping that it would solve the issue. The problem was still there after the update.

I have exactly the same issue as the OP. Extremely annoying to reboot the phone every time it happens. One thing I have noticed is that my phone doesn't know its number. If I go to settings, about phone, the number says unknown.

That shouldn't affect anything. My number shows up in status.
I had this issue resolved a few months ago as the push-to-talk app Tikl requires this in order to use it.
I was having the problem even with my number showing up. Call T-Mobile and have them reset you with the towers like they did for me and see if that helps you too.

I posted about this same issue on wrong section of the forum. Ive had this issue ever since samsung vibrant. I have applanet installed on my phone and some of the app that i installed accessed my apn and totally changed my apn setting to "Sirious application disabled.epc.tmobile" or something like that so i wyped everthing off from the phone and so far i havent had the issue ever since yesterday. Also i had the locale and language setting to korean so im thinking that might be causing it also.

That's what I remember too. I think its just an issue with the radio Samsung uses in all their phones. Might not be a way to fix it if even their new phones like the nexus s still have this issue. They prob would have tweakdd it by now if they could.
Same problem here. Xmas eve on shift and I have a phone that had no connection whatsoever (not even phone capabilities) this may be the one thing that takes the phone back. (If it happens again)

Have you called T-Mobile to see if they can give you a reset to the towers?
I had this done yesterday afternoon and haven't had the problem again since.
Also, if you'really using an old sim, I would suggest activating the one the phone came with just to be on the safe side.
If that doesn't help you then I would at least wait until just before your return period ends to see if there will be an update to address the issue.

I think there may be a problem with the HTC time servers. My phone is currently 12 mins ahead of the rest of the world!!
I have seen posts on the vodafone forum concerning time errors.

Okay, thanks for the info.
Also my weather hasn't been updating for the last 2 days , so i'm guessing that's related to their servers aswell.
i had this i fixed by disabling auto time update then set manually then switched back to auto then set manually again before finally selecting auto (rebooting phone after each change)
this fixed it for me, might not for you, yours might only need changing once but worth a try

Lots of bugs/glitches with Nexus S

So I've been using the Nexus S for about one month now, my very first smartphone. Discaimer: I'm a NOOB to the core. I never rooted my phone, never thought of it.
I'm pulling my hair out at the following long list (and counting) of bugs and glitches I've noticed with my phone:
1) Menu settings randomly change (including ringtones)
2) screen doesn't turn off automatically, even though I have set screen auto off to 30 seconds. (this one is somewhat "dangerous" as I leave my phone in the bag and don't check it for a while, and later notice that my screen has been left on the whole time, draining my battery)
3) cannot make outgoing calls. I don't get outgoing ringing when I try to make outgoing calls. Also, during this time, the phone did not ring when there was an incoming call
4) pictures in the gallery come and go
5) The list of apps I downloaded disappear from "my apps" list in Android market
6) when I select a call from the call log, the phone dials a different contact
7) after using airplane mode, turning off airplane mode does not restore signal and 3G data
What's very frustrating is that all of these bugs seem to come and go randomly, without any "patterns" or "triggers." I've restarted the phone, and the issue I was having seems to go away, only to lead to another one a while later. I am wondering if any of these issues are known problems. Also, are these problems more likely to be software or hardware issues?
I'm running
Android 2.3.4
Baseband version I9020AUCKD1
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-ge382d80
Build number GRJ22
on Fido network in Canada.

You know, half the time i wouldn't even take note of the OP username and just go ahead and try to help, but you caught on to something here. Oddball username, 1 post and very unusual (really far out) problems/issues...
hmmm
1) Menu settings randomly change (including ringtones) - Probably user error. Or you're using apps that keep conflicting with your setup.
2) screen doesn't turn off automatically, even though I have set screen auto off to 30 seconds. (this one is somewhat "dangerous" as I leave my phone in the bag and don't check it for a while, and later notice that my screen has been left on the whole time, draining my battery) - Manually turn screen off after a given set of time, chances are, your bag is pressing up against the phone when you place it in and the phone keeps pressing buttons (My guess).
3) cannot make outgoing calls. I don't get outgoing ringing when I try to make outgoing calls. Also, during this time, the phone did not ring when there was an incoming call - I had this problem before, are you using Google Voice with integration?
4) pictures in the gallery come and go - Depends on the size of the images, the phone can only read so much data from SD card at a time. I assume you're not giving it enough time to load everything or you have a .nomedia file somewhere that's hiding your pictures from being shown.
5) The list of apps I downloaded disappear from "my apps" list in Android market - It's a known bug with some Market builds. Downloading another app or giving it a minute will usually fix the problem.
6) when I select a call from the call log, the phone dials a different contact - This is weird. Do you have a custom dialer app from the market that may have this bug? I played with my phone out of box a few days and nothing like this happened.
7) after using airplane mode, turning off airplane mode does not restore signal and 3G data - If you're in a weak signal area, it can take longer to gain 3G back. If it doesn't come back within 2 minutes, I suggest a reboot. I also suggest doing a profile update, PRL update, and firmware update (as Google has sent an OTA with bugfixes) to see if these problems can be fixed.
The only bug I experienced since I've got my Nexus S is that the Screen won't respond for a little while after unlocking my phone.
I didn't had the time yet to analyze the problem more detailed, maybe this also happens due to a specific widget? I don't know. I got a lot of them all over my four different home screens.
No response from OP yet people continue to respond. I think the fecal fan has left the building.

Nexus S does not have an SD card slot AFAIK. I gave it plenty of time to load everything. I wouldn't expect my phone to require 5 minutes to load pictures. I own a smartphone, not a 486. On reboot, some pictures show up that weren't in the gallery before. After subsequent reboot, some other random pictures disappear.

I understand 3G can take longer, but it seems fishy that my cell signal doesn't come back. I waited more than 2 minutes and I ended up HAVING to reboot (twice in fact) to get both 3G and cell reception back.

Yes this happens. BUT.... only when you mount the phone via USB and do not disconnect it properly. The phone doesnt have time to scan for your set ringtones, and therefore defaults it to some random mp3 or whatever.

Due to what i said above as well. This is a HUGE bug.
Every other problem you have is either user-error or an issue from your telco.
Have you done a factory reset of the phone? You may even have a virus. Just read somewhere that Android is the most targeted platform for them as of now.

[Q] Losing google sync on Wifi

Hello all,
Quick question. Is anyone losing Google Sync / Data when on Wifi ?
Happens at home and work. Never had an issue with my GS3 or One X. On cell service it works fine.
update 11/24
Seems as though its a pretty widespread issue. Also , it is an issue with the connection it self, not just google sync.
I opened up a "google issue" , if you are having the same problems I recommend posting on the thread. It can be found here:

Is android 4.2 incompatible with 128-bit WEP???
This is driving me nuts! Any ideas community??

hey guys,
I actually put in a google issue that seems to be picking up some steam.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
I have no clue what causes it at this point. It doesnt happen on all networks. Happens on my work network which is open / unsecured.
Also does it on my inlaws network which is wpa2 encrypted. However my home network which is also wpa2 encrypted is fine.
I recommend posting on the google issue to raise awareness
I added my experience, it seems to me like it's keeping wifi alive but not the Google connection. I have no issues on a Nexus 7 running 4.2 so it's not my router either but could be something specific to Nexus 4 hardware. I might try changing wifi sleep policy to never to see if at least this way HSPA will be connected when screen is off.

Anybody not having this issue? It's really annoying and for some reason even if I set wifi to stay on when plugged in or never it takes forever to disconnect so I still don't get alerts. Definitely appears to be an issue with 4.2 so i guess we just have to wait and hope it is fixed in next update.

Any chance this could be a Google server issue? My Nexus 7 on 4.2 and GS3 running CM10 4.1.2 doesn't have issue either just my Nexus 4. Not sure what's causing it on my Nexus 4 but it's driving me crazy.

I'm pretty sure this is a general Wifi issue, and not limited to Google services. I've noticed that when the Wifi goes to sleep, I no longer receive incoming calls in GrooveIP or Sipdroid. I also don't receive email alerts until I turn on the screen, and the wifi re-activates.
EDIT: I ran a simple test. Loaded GrooveIP, called GV # from another phone, GrooveIP rang. Let the phone sit for 10 minutes to fall asleep. Called again. Didn't ring. I then loaded up Advanced Wifi Lock to prevent the phone from going asleep. The first call worked, and so did the one after 10 minutes. So, this definitely seems like an issue that impacts any service depends on a reliable Wifi link - not just Google's Sync services. I ran the same test with Sipdroid, and got identical results.

That's a bad example because GrooveIP uses GTalk on the backend so you're still using Google Services. What makes this more puzzling is I went to a Brooklyn Nets game last night and they have crazy fast open WiFi at the place while my phone was connected, it appears that all notifications worked even when the screen was off. I was too busy watching the game to pay much attention but I did get emails, etc. while the screen was off and I was on Wifi. The main difference between that WiFi and my home Wifi is the one at the arena had no security at all.
I've been playing around with my router and tweaking settings but nothing is working and I'm pretty sure this is a phone software issue. What I want to find is someone with 4.2 on a Nexus 4 who is NOT having an issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is an app or Google Service sync related issue.
My Nexus 7 running 4.2 does NOT have any issue on the same exact Wifi so I'm wondering if it's some app or setting on my phone that's causing this
For me it definitely seems to occur more on unsecured networks.
Not only is it google sync but the connection in general.
Anybody with this issue brave enough to try a factory reset? If it doesn't get solved soon I'll probably flash CWM recovery, do a nandroid and then do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. At least that way if it doesn't I can restore backup.
Anyone want to try now?

Weird! So you did a factory reset and still nothing? Did you still have the issue before you restored apps? I mean like completely stock with just what comes on the phone. If you still have the issue with that, then we know it's not app related.
I might also try downloading and reflashing the system image...maybe something got screwed up in the 4.2 update??

Since I flashed Franco boot 5, the problem has stopped (i think). Flashing stock/factory reset didn't help me.

Interesting - is Franco Kernel 5 stable enough to use as a daily driver? Any issues? I'm willing to flash it now to test it but don't want to make the phone less stable.
ya i have had 0 issues with it , from what he has said its not a ton different from stock just some basic fixes

Strange then that it might fix this issue since the wifi module is stored in system and he's not overwriting it so something in the kernel itself

[Q] Wifi battery and sluggish problems

In the past Ive been able to fix problems, this one has me stumped. Between the 3 or 4 android forums, theres usually a solution.
However, I havent been able to figure this one out.
N7 - 2012 - .4.4.3 - rooted (for stickmount compatibility) - stock img
I am adept at using the Unified Nexus Toolkit.
About a month ago my battery started to take a hit. It would drop ~30% just surfing the news sites in the AM.
Last week the text on some of the sites was a little screwed up, it looked like some alien crap, and started to go up and down.
Last week I had issues downloading a podcast. Took me 6-7 tries to get it.
Two days ago the wifi started to suck balls; I listen (stream) to podcasts to get to sleep, and it wouldnt connect.
- the wifi icon goes grey after 30 seconds
- after "turning off and turning on" wifi it goes white, then grey within 30 seconds.
- I tired a "wifi - fixer app" no good, it just shows a "connection failed" and "network check failed - trying again" message
- I get alot of the "google search has stopped messages"
- the whole system is sluggish.......
I have turned off "optimize wifi" in advanced setting no help.
(I have noticed the wifi fixer app likes to use/test with connecting with baidu.com - lolz)
My desktop has no issues, nor does my romets laptop. I suspect the problem lies within the tablet.
This morning I reflashed 4.4.2, doesnt seem to help I tried to go back to 4.2 but it wouldnt boot (I liked 4.2)
How/where do I fix the wifi issue?

I'm pretty sure you don't want to hear that (and mostly had that notion for yourself) - but this smells alot like a hardware rather than a software problem to me.
Cheers,
Nix
PS: Sorry for posting this *ehm* well, nonsense, but I needed to get my 10 post count full to be able to ask for some kernel issue in the development section.
Hope nobody feels offended - I know it's not welcome. But I don't understand that rule anyway if you obey the others...
Did you try a factory reset? That would tell you if it is hardware.

it would seem to be hardware based....I did a refresh, no wifi. I did a wipe and reflash, no wifi. Now I cant do anything without any apps DOH!
Im going tothe local cell fixit guy, and seeing about putting a new board put in it...might as well do the battery at the same time...o rmaybe buy a used one.
q#2
how does one push apps to the phone without wifi? I want to get stick mount so I can use it to watch movies off of a usb stick.
Find the ifixit teardown for the nexus7. Follow instructions to remove the back. Clean the WiFi antenna contacts on the motherboard, they are like gold plated leaf springs that touch the antenna points on the back cover. I bent mine a little bit out for a better connection.
