Hi, since getting my n4 I'm having issues with watching youtube videos over WiFi. I have to turn the HQ option off and even then its painfully slow and buffers repeatedly. I have a decent broadband connection and didn't have this issue with my nexus S. Its the same when i try my work wifi too.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas or tips?
Thanks
It happens on my phone and my tablet. It could be the freaking YouTube app.

Yeah it happens here also on anything connected to our wifi, even though its a great, fast connection. It's youtube simply sucking in general I think..
Thanks, it hadn't occurred to me it could be the app but you're right i think. Vimeo is fine.

Has anyone else had problems with the WiFi on their epic? I have a recurring issue where it connects but never receives any data so I cant use any data while connected to WiFi? What makes it stranger is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't...

It's been a real pain in the butt to me, especially since I had to do a lot of browsing and YouTube from my phone at the hotel I'm staying at and 3g sucks compared to WiFi...
So all of a sudden it starts working again... I am really hating this phone sometimes, do you guys think I should try my luck with swapping it out for another epic? I'm only 15 of my 30 days in
I've had no issues with wifi whatsoever. Can you provide some more details?

I've got a curious problem with the Netflix app on my Nexus 7. Under ordinary use Netflix seems to be OK most of the time (apart from glitches that you expect sometimes). However I have changed my DNS to Playmo servers to enable US Netflix in the UK. Now this works fine on my PS3, my Xbox 360 and even my iPhone. Sadly virtually every video stream comes up with this message shortly after starting the stream. "This title is not available to watch instantly. Please try another title."
Has anyone else found this behaviour? Are there any solutions?

Fixed the issue. It was Playmo that were to blame. Trying unblockus and it works fine on Android devices now.

So me and both of my friend had trouble loading a YouTube video, it was so slow and kept pausing. We both have the Nexus 4 and were on wifi by the way. So we tried using another friends S III and it loaded the video fine. When I ran a side by side speed test he got a 19 mbs download and I could only pull 2. Is this happening to anyone else?
Edit: we were on the same wifi

No I kept it on but earlier in the day I was getting perfectly good speeds. Like sometimes my speed is fine and then sometimes it's slow.

It obviously shouldn't be that way. Since this is wifi, try a mix of different networks. Lord knows, this wouldn't be the first phone with wifi issues with certain network security types right out of the gate (or wifi problems in general).

Yeah I switched to another network and it went fast again. Was just wondering if anyone knew the cause of the sudden slowdowns though.

On T Mo, I have had it flip from H+ to 3G but all in all in my speed test without changing anything APN wise I consistently get around 16mbps down. You tube and such flies (HQ) and even on wifi on Xfinitys basic package on a G band router I have no issues at all with wifi and YouTube in HD. Sorry, I'm no help but I haven't had an issue.
Oh my bad, I forgot to mentioned that we were on the same WiFi.

I've also had this on WIFI, thought it was my router, may have to play with router settings a bit to see what's happening.
Its only really noticeable when I try to play a youtube video, although had it other times too.
Also switching to mobile data for youtube as its faster!

Update!!! I figured it out its googles servers they are overloaded this is what makes me think that. Play store loads slow as well as YouTube! Not our phones!

I'm seeing this issue as well and it's occurring on 2 completely different wireless networks: at home and in the office. I've tried tweaking wifi settings on both my Nexus 4 and on my router at home but nothing has fixed the slow wifi speeds. And none of my other Android devices are experiencing this issue (Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Xoom).
I called Google Play support just now and they didn't have any info to offer on whether or not this is a known issue, they just asked if I'd tried restarting my phone and/or done a factory reset. After I verified that I'd already done both things and neither action resolved the issue they said I could exchange the phone, so that's what I decided to do.
If this problem is indeed being caused by faulty hardware in the phone, hopefully the replacement phone will be in a better state and work properly. <crosses fingers>
It's the router that needs to be updated, not the phones. Obviously if you're is broken though that is irrelevant.
Can't say why that is, but I read a thread awhile back detailing it, I will try and locate it.

I think remydlc is referring to download speed over a cellular data connection, and not WiFi (which is what this thread's topic is really about). At least that's the way I read it...
Is this related... I have noticed compared to my old S2 and iPad my nexus has fewer bars and the signal can drop if held in the left hand. The connection speed can be much less too.
Not good.
could it possibly be trying multiple networks? I have a dual band 5 and 2.4 but they have different ssids - my initial set up was to the 5 ghz but when the google restore happened it populated my 2.4 ssid and pw. I found I had to "forget" all my configured access points and just set up my 5 ghz one and everything was smoking

I don't think this is causing the issue (at least for my phone). I've had the slow WiFi speeds on 2 completely different networks, with one being the campus network of the university I work at. Also, I've tried using my Nexus 4 on 2 different routers at home, one of which can do both 2.4/5.0 ghz and when I tried manually setting the phone to just use either the 2.4 ghz or the 5.0 ghz network it made no difference; the phone's WiFi speed was still very slow.
I'm feeling pretty convinced at this point that it's something faulty with the phone. I pretty much tore down and rebuilt my home network yesterday and tried all different types of settings to test the result on my Nexus 4 and nothing made the WiFi speed any better on the phone.
My Wi-Fi connectivity was rock solid on 4.2, but since applying the OTA I'm getting frequent data drops. Still shows me as connected to my router, but get no data. A quick Wi-Fi toggle fixes the problem each time. Anybody else seeing this?

Does anyone else have this issue ?
Connectivity is really key for this device and if this is common then I would likely not update.
upsetting to hear this, one of the big reasons I opted for this over some other 10.1in tablets was the MIMO dual band wireless. My Viewsonic g-tablet has horrible wifi connectivity and it makes watching youtube horrible. I couldnt imagine having to deal with it on my nexus 10 when it comes in the mail.
The first thing to check is always to set a static IP and see if the issue is resolved.
Just got my replacement today. Before the 4.2 and 4.2.1 updates, WiFi was solid no drops and full bars. After updates, pretty finicky drops quite a bit:/ hope the next update addresses this.
And yes sometimes it will show bars but no data. Especially when I start using 5ghz instead of 2.4ghz.

After a few hours with no drops, I may have discovered a fix for my situation. I changed my access point from WPA (TKIP) to WPA2 (AES), and for the last 4 hours I haven't had a single drop. Prior to this, it'd drop every few minutes. Hopefully this holds up.
I've been having connectivity issues as well. I'll have my Nexus 7 and 10 in the same spot and the N7 will hold a solid connection and the N10 will drop and reconnect ad nauseam
My Wifi is perfect.
I also have this problem , any one found a fix?

When I had this problem I found that my google account had saved my connection settings. It was trying to use the same static ip as my phone. Went in and changed it and everything is fine.
Hopefully this can help.

Edit: Turning off HD makes the videos worm, but my wifi is definitely capable of streaming 720/1080p. Could it possibly be due to the fact that videos aren't in 720? Hmm..
So when using the YouTube app videos don't load. The 'Play' icon shows up, but pressing it makes the video buffer, then it shows again. Playing YouTube on my other phones works fine, so it isn't a server issue. What's up?

I've seen mention of this with the N4 and certain carriers (on data). Is this on data only, or wifi as well?

I get the same problem. I have WiFi on and I try watching YouTube videos and that **** always stops to load. I don't ever remember it being this bad. I has to stop to load like 3 or 4 times in every video. I always end up turning off HD which helps but dam man. I want that HD

I have had this for ages now - All youtube videos buffer every 4 seconds or so. The temporary fix is:
1) Force stop youtube
2) Clear data and clear cache
3) Press and hold power button for 10 seconds
4) Turn phone on, reset time/date (step 3 resets date/time)
Youtube then works for a couple of days.....
I have also tried turning off 'optimize wifi for battery life' and removing youtube updates. Neither seem to affect the problem.
Uninstall YouTube and then re-install. Ta daaaaaa.
Oh my!! Thanks guys! Finally HD. I did both of your steps and it now works in HD without constant buffering. However, I had been wondering if it was a problem with general WiFi speeds. As sometimes doing aspeedtest I would get 3mbps when I have a 12 Mbps connection.

But - it would be nice to get rid of this bug once and for all ? Are google even aware of it ? Is there a publicly available bug tracker or something we can all see ?
