AM/PM in Stock Status Bar - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I finally have a comfortable setup with my device.
(deodexed stock 4.2.2 w/ latest franco kernel)
I've tuned some things here and there and the only thing that I need to get everything okay (in my book) is the ability to display AM/PM in the status bar.
I've tried looking for this simple mod but with no luck. Anyone want to share some insights? I'm also assuming that I can't add more softkeys if I'm on stock, correct?
Thanks!

Stock does not have that function, but almost all ROMs have such a function built into them.

Battery mod that'll work on Infamous' ROM

Hi all, I tried searching but I'm still very much new at all of this, and unsure of what's compatible with what. Can anyone direct me to a mod that I can flash on TRWM to get cyanogenmod-like battery icons at the notification bar, instead of the stock one that doesnt show battery %?
Note: I am on the Infamous 4.4 ROM
I appreciate it thanks.

Infamous is a GE 4.4 Kitkat ROM, right? Then you can install Xposed Installer, then the Gravity Box module. You can find both via Google. Make sure you download it from the XDA forum, and not some random site.
I have a GE 4,4 ROM installed and it runs Xposed and Gravity Box beautifully.
Here ya go--If not familiar with xposed or gbox read up a little

New nexus user questions about rom and kernel

I tried searching for these questions but remained uninformed.
1) ROM: I installed paranoidandroid 4.1 beta and it looks pretty much similar to the stock rom. I see some youtube video with a lot more customization options and just wondering where they are since i cant find any in the settings menu. For example, how can i edit the lockscreen unlock shortcuts? I would like to add sms, camera, and mail to the circle shortcuts which only includes the unlock as of now.
2) Kernel I installed franco kernel latest r203 and im just wondering how can i edit these settings or am i not allowed to? by settings i mean changing cpu options (disabling 2 cores to save battery) and what other settings i can tweak for better overall performance to battery ratio.
I have rooted / installed custom roms and kernels on htc and samsung and they let me change these settings so im just wondering how it works with the nexus.
Thanks for the help!

1) PA stated that they were going for a stock look so if you want a rom with customizations I suggest you check out Carbon, Vanir, Slimkat, etc...
2) Some kernels have the option to do that like Faux, Franco himself doesn't feel the need to jam a bunch of options into his kernel so if you really want multiple kernel options check out other kernels.

How to speed up our device?

Hi guys,
I've just brought this fantastic device, and I'm very happy about it. He is really snappy whit Nova launcher However I would like to receive some suggestions from you on how to get the best from our N10.
For example, I was thinking to install a custom rom and a custom kernel, but I rly don't know which and I don't know if they rly can give some advantages.
I was thinking something like purity rom (because of tweaked bionic and dalvik libraries) + KT Kernel (because it has been recently updated). Or maybe KT kernel + stock rom + ART
What do you think? Have you got any suggestion? Tell me
PS: sry for my bad English
Hi,
I've been using CyanogenMod 11 with its own kernel for some long time now, it never ceased to disappoint me! However, it's not recommendable creating threads asking for the "best kernel/ROM", the best thing to be done is downloading and trying yourself until you find something that suits well your needs . CM11 with NOVA Launcher was good enough for me hehe.

Eheh I know that, but I'm not a flash maniac, and rly I have fear to brick my device flashing and re-flashing roms on roms... That's why I'm asking your opinion. I would like to find immediately the best solution, flash it and then don't touch the device more.
However the for your opinion. I will keep it in mind

I think that the first thing you need to ask yourself is what are your priorities with this device? For instance gaming performance, media consumption, is stability paramount... Etc?
You may want to start off with rooted stock and add the XPosed framework plus modules that give you custom ROM features particularly Gravity Box. If you need more then change your kernel (Franco, KTManta ... Etc). No matter which way you go take nandroid backups and save them off your device before making a significant change (kernel, custom ROM, moving away from stock). Your recovery of choice will provide you with the nandroid backup/recovery functions.
Also read, read... Knowing the focus of a specific kernel or ROM will help in making your choices balanced by the issues other users are having.
Good luck.

Thank for the answer.
Yeah I always read all the feature of roms... But they never speak about optimization or performance. They always add features and options on Android but... Nothing I can't get with gravitybox.
What I need is smoothness. Not necessarily game performance, but speed while moving from app to app without microlag.
However, let me ask here other questions without opening another thread:
1)Is it normal that, when trying to access the recovery (my device is locked and not rooted) it display "no commands"? Do I need to unlock the device to get into recovery?
2) Can you suggest me a program make backups of my games saves and apps without root? Because I need to backups my data before unlocking the device...

Well, I can't really speak on custom ROMs and kernels because I'm perfectly happy with running stock rooted with Xposed Framework on my N5, N7 (2013) and N10. But, to answer your questions:
1) Yes, it's normal. When you boot into Recovery, all you initially see is the android laying on his back with a red exclamation mark over him. In order to get the commands to show, you need to hit power + volume down (or maybe up, I always forget) at the same time. It can take a few tries with the buttons, but they'll eventually show up.
2) I believe an app called Helium is what you are looking for. I've never used it since I'm already rooted and use Titanium Backup, but I believe it kind of works the same as Titanium Backup.

Nexus devices are very very hard to brick. Luckily. So no worries there mate. As for roms. Long story short: there is no best rom. If you want speed juat overclock the beast..

No problem. Everything you need to know can be found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/framework-xposed-rom-modding-modifying-t1574401.
It's pretty straightforward. Just install the Xposed Installer apk, then go into the Xposed Installer app and hit "Install/Update". Reboot, and Xposed Framework should be installed. Then, just go back into the Xposed Installer app and click "Download" and choose whatever Modules you want to run. My personal favorites are Gravity Box, Unicon (purchased through the Play Store), Xuimod, and App Settings. I also have the Xposed GEL Settings (XGELS) Module, but only on my Nexus 10 since I love the Google Now Launcher, but it shrinks the icon grid considerably. So XGELS allows me to get the same number of icons on the GN Launcher as the default launcher.
Edit: Oh, and here is a collection of the Modules so you can see what each of them do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/index-collection-xposed-modules-post-t2327541

A couple of questions:
1) Is backup necessary before the installation?
2) Does the Enable Translucent Decor module hide the navigation and notification bars?
3) Would the installation of the Xposed framework interfere with the stock ROM updates later on?

No problem.
1) It's not really necessary, but before installing/flashing anything that can modify system files, I always think it's a good idea to make a backup beforehand. You never know. That being said, it's all really simple.
2) If you're talking about the solid black background in the notification and navigation bars, then yes. It doesn't completely get rid of them, it just makes the black bar transparent like it should be when using the Google Now Launcher. I don't use that specific module because I already use Gravity Box, and it already has that option to enable translucent decor. It works flawlessly. I don't know why Google said it causes issues on the Nexus 10. If you want to completely get rid of those two bars, you need to enable something like PIE controls and Expanded Desktop.
3) Yes. But the solution is simple. When you want to update via OTA, all you have to do is go into the Xposed Installer app, and under Framework, just click Uninstall. This replaces the modified Framework with the stock Framework so you can update via OTA without any issues. You don't even have to uncheck or uninstall your Modules or the Xposed Installer app itself. Then, after updating, you'll probably just have to re-root by flashing SuperSU in recovery (unless you have survival mode enabled). After that, simply go back into the Xposed Installer app, and under Framework again, click Install/Update. As long as you left your Modules as is, your setup should be back to how it was before you took the OTA.
Well guys, i think I'm going to install SlimKat 4.0 and KTmanta Kernel... I will tell you if I'm satisfied of my choice
Ok guys, I've done some tests and now I've decided too keep Purity rom + ART... And the results are incredible!
23000 score on Antutu benchmark
9000 with Quadrat
Incredible performances and a GREAT battery life, much better than stock rom with dalvik
I think that the tweaked ART and Kernel of Purity Rom deliver the best experience with our device. I suggest it, you will be surprised of the benefits you can get!
Thank to everyone who helped me in this thread
I have been very happy with my AOKP and Franco Kernel combination.
I've installed Purity ROM + ART and it's fast - but i still think stock 4.3 is faster. I tried KTManta and that didn't change things despite overclocking the CPU and GPU.Wish we could have ART on a 4.3 rom.
Are there any recommended 4.3 rom/kernel combos that give good performance?
Edit: First time i installed Purity I didn't install GApps. It was incredibily smooth and fast. After installing GApps, it became laggy again, similar to my experience of stock 4.4.2.

Do you really find 4.3 faster then kitkat + art? It's really strange. Well I know that the latest jelly bean firmware maybe is built better than 4.4.2 (which has got some bugs here and there, and yeah I prefer JB device options format) but ART is unbeatable, except by a very well tweaked Dalvik library.
However I think I know maybe why Purity 4.4.2 seems laggy to you. Maybe it's Google now launcher + transparent status bar & notification bar.
I've changed the launcher to Nova (but u can use Apex and similar) and immediately disabled translucent bars. It's smooth like butter now. With tra translucent bars, instead, everything was a little laggy and not fluid. In particular the Drawer scrolling was clearly laggy.
So, try to Nandroid backup, flash again Purity + Gapps. Then change Launcher (and unistall the google one if u want) and disable translucent bars. Then activate ART.
That's what I've done and I'm very happy of the performance provided by my Nexus 10
Also now I'm trying KTmanta Kernel. I didn't found increased performances, but I really like the possibility to undervolt both CPU & GPU. Undervolt = less energy request = No overheat = best battery life

I' going to test KTmanta for another week, then I will switch to Franco kernel to see which is better
Sure I agree the general UI and multitasking is snappier with 4.4.2 with ART than 4.3.1...BUT I primarily bought the nexus 10 to consume media (e.g. video, ebooks, music) and for me buttered AOKP 4.3 is much smoother when watching video than any 4.4.2 rom/kernel combo I tried. The trade off is a bit of stutter in the UI but I can live with that. Video was just terrible on 4.4.2, including audio sync lag and plenty of dropped frames.
Can't wait to see how 4.5 behaves with video as I really like ART!

[Q] Is there any very clean deodexed rom with no mods at all?

As title says, looking for a very clean (with no mods at all) rom, just deodexed with root or without (I can root it and add cwm), for a N9005 NC2 or newer
These all what i need:
Deodexed
Zipaligned
Stock kernel
Extra:
Rooted with latest SuperSu
Knox deleted
Busybox
These all I do not need:
Support init.d
Build.prop tweaks
4 way reboot
Roboto Condensed font
Keyboard with secondary symbols for all languages enabled
No SMStoMMS conversion
SMS/MMS Show sent time instead of time received
Save and Restore SMS/MMS to SD Card
Enabled group messaging
Unlimited SMS recipients
Enabled Split View Mode in SMS/MMS Settings
Enabled Screen On/Off Toggle in SMS/MMS Settings
Increased the SMS hour limit to 1000
Network unlocked
Exit menu in stock web browser
Shutter Sound Menu in Camera Settings
Center clock and traffic meter
White battery icon
White signal arrows
Scrooling cache disabled
Fast, smooth and battery friendly
Custom SecSettings not change device status info (if you have "Official" status, flashing this rom will not change it!)
the least roms in mods that I know are: Omega and Assassin, but both still has a lot of mods
X-not is full of mods
Try Omega Rom, been using it for months now and compared to the other Rom's about, it's the best there is.
yes, i know it, even i just read his V13, he has a lot of mods and kernel

Most of the mods and apps the Rom comes with can be deleted when installed or while installing the Rom through Aroma you can choose not to include them.
You can also choose which kernal you want through Aroma, stock or omega..
It's probably the closest to stock Rom you will find.

Assassin rom is probably the most modded rom there is...

Few Questions
I am running the D800 from At&t. I am coming from LiquidSmooth. I am running the stable version of this rom. All seems well but I have a few questions.
Is there anyway to enable knock to lock? I see knock to unlock works, not sure if I'm missing something?
Also, it seems my nav bar buttons are not working. I need to use the pie menu for on screen nav. And I can only launch it from the bottom right portion of the screen. That is the same thing when trying to use the regular nav bar, I can only use the most right button. I have wiped and reflashed a few times with no luck. I know that portion of the screen works because the keyboard works fine on that spot. It seemed like it stopped after changing LCD density? It seems like the phone thinks that portion of the screen is more towards the right, instead of the center. Because even when I open pie, I can only do it from the right bottom side of the screen not the middle.
EDIT: I tried changing the LCD density back to 480 and this did help with the nav bar, it seems to work fine. However the keyboard was useless. Using swipe it measure 2 lines each time when trying to use anything on the top row of keys..
The keyboard brings me to my next issue. I can't seem to select a predicted word? I try to touch it and it just clicks somewhere else around the word.
I am not sure these are ROM related, it could be another issue all together? But any help or ideas would be great appreciated! Thanks, Chris.

I'm on the latest but I didn't realize it was stock. I use hangouts.
I was downloaded the newest release (v7.0) based on android 4.4.4 but i noticed that the newest AICP Gapps release are for Android 4.4.2, its ok to flash those Gapps with this version ?
I have d802.
I used slimroms gapps
Is there any way to remove the Bluetooth and alarm icons from the status bar? I've searched through every setting and I can't find an option to disable those icons. I'm using Timely instead of the stock Clock app; I changed the setting in the stock app to get rid of the icon, but that didn't work.
I tried using GravityBox, and while it did work, all of the changes don't seem to stick on reboot. Also, it causes the navbar height reverts back to 48dpi (which I changed in the AICP ROM settings). Without GravityBox the navbar height sticks to the setting I select.
Other than these two minor issues, this ROM is exactly what I was looking for!
Hello all,
Planning to give this rom a try. I want to use a custom kernel with this. Can anyone please tell me that which kernel combo works best with this rom in terms of battery life.
Thank you for reading.

Problems with contacts sync
Hi,
I am having some problems when syncing Google Contacts, specially with their photos, some of them appear and other don't. All data is in Google Contacts, but only partially in the phone.
Thanks in advance,

Any modded camera works on this rom? Pls
where is option to change battery style ? I'm on AICP 7.0
problem with speaker
Hi, I flashed the 6.0 stable and up to far so good, then I went back to stock because I did not like the camera, but I can see that turning the speakers are much more quiet and the sound is very distorted I tried ll possible hack but I could not improve anything, besides the cases the problem is also in microphone that records badly. What i have to do now?
There is a meter of network speed in the status bar in version 5.0? What are the differences with the CM12?
Lost Data
Posting this in case it helps somebody that has lost data after flashing and sees this before they freak. Flashed the latest Lollipop build (and of course the 12b baseband) and lost data. I thought through everything. It didn't make sense and I'm pretty good about following OPs. I read and read and read, google searched, searched XDA, Phandroid, etc. I went back thru nandroids w/ correct basebands, stock, Liquid, AICP, PA. ?Nothing worked! I was about to revert to stock and start over. Then?! Ahh...hardware...that's it! Powered off, pulled SIM, cleaned contacts with a little alcohol, let dry, rebooted...voila! Data!
