I want to change my phone to something similar to the G1. Someone knows if there is a phone with the same design but updated hardware (dual core)
Thanks
I wish! There really isnt, ive read about people who have attempted to change out the logic board but ive never heard of any success. Really your best option would be to go out and find som hardware keyboard android phones with more power as many of us former dream users have done.
You can run a search in gsmarena to help you out but you will be limited on options, maybe 10 that are a reasonable upgrade but only a handfull that are actually worth it.

Isn't the MyTouch 4G Slide like that? It even has a trackball type thing.

so the fcc has approved the magic for tmobile. what does that mean for us g1ers.
Depends on the cost and hardware. I hear its pretty much the exact same as the G1 inside and if thats the case I most likely wont. However, if the GPS reciever is better then maybe. My only gripe with the G1 since it never seems to work for me.

i don't see the point at all.
now that we nearly have the Magic ROM ported to the G1 i don't see the need to spend money to get nearly exactly the same phone but without a keyboard.(which is the best part if you ask me )
the only way i'd get one is if when my contract runs out and they offer it me as an upgrade.
I like it dont get me wrong..but like many G1 users (probably) its got to have the keyboard...some complain to me they dont like their G1 because it has a keyboard and lackof onscreen keyboard...but I rather have the keyboard and more screen space...
Ill be keeping my G1
I'll keep my G1 too the only thing that the g1 does not have that the magic does is more rom memory and that's because the rom in the Magic is bigger other than that is the same hardware less the keyboard. (I don't like screen keyboard they drive me crazy). One thing I don't know yet is if they are using the full power of the processor in the Magic as I have red before in the G1 is running like a half, but this still is not a reason I think that later you will see a overclock app for the g1 as they are for the winmo.
And like somebody else said haykuro almost have the HtcMagic rom ported to the G1.
Hey everyone, I've currently been using a Mytouch 3g and well I need a phone with a keyboard lol I just like the faster response keyboard phones have. So I was wondering which would be a better buy if I wanted a phone with a keyboard that operates on android....
morola cliq G1 or (??) if there's another one that runs android?
Also if I did decide to get the cliq, would i be able to still rom it like i did my MT3G?
thanks for your help
For T-Mobile There is also the Behold 2. I don't know if you will still be able to flash roms. You don't be able to flash roms from this site because this is for htc phones. You are going to have to find another forum. I don't know if you will be able to find ROM's of such high quality that you will find here, however.
yeah that's what i figured, i just love having a phone with a keyboard. Is there anything else like the G1 that can still be rom'd
for t-mobile? No. The G1 and MyTouch are the only HTC devices for t-mobile with Android.
Hi all,
I'm on Wind Mobile in Canada (1700MHz 3G), so I don't have a lot of choices if I'm looking for an Android handset:
-Nexus One: Discontinued, and I'm not a big fan of the PenTile AMOLED screen
-Samsung Vibrant: Would cost me almost $600 after shipping/tax, and I've heard about reception issues
-Moto Milestone XT720: I like this phone, but it only has 256MB RAM, and Motorola isn't even promising to upgrade it to Froyo (it currently runs on Eclair 2.1). However, I will soon be able to buy this phone directly from Wind, so one advantage I would have is warranty...
Ironically, on paper, the HD2 seems like a better choice than all of these, because:
-I could get it for around $400 (which is about the same as what the XT720 would cost me)
-It can currently run 2.2, and will probably be able to run 3.0 in the future
-Good reception
-Biggest screen
-Best specs: 1GHz CPU and 576MB (!) RAM
-Possibility of trying out WP7 in the future
Now here's the thing.. I'm not at all interested in WinMo 6.5. So as a full-time Android handset, would you guys go ahead buy this phone? Also, will the custom ROMs have full access to the app market?
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks,
Faruk
Wait for the nand versions to come out and see how they work. If possible try to get hold of a friends hd2 and see if you like it.

The HTC HD2 is definitely the "Best-value" phone here since you can play around with both WM and Android.
However, I've seen Samsung Galaxy S go for $300-350 on Craigslist. Not that much more expensive than the HTC HD2 and you get a native Android phone (with AMOLED screen ). It's FAST too. I get 2200+ with Quadrant. I haven't experienced any call issue with my Vibrant. Don't use GPS that often but there's a fix for that (and lag).
If you like playing and tweaking your phones then get the HD2. If you aren't ready to deal with issues and scour xda for solutions, then do not get the HD2.
If you do get a HD2 your probably going to get a Nexus ROM on it anyway, so just get the nexus?!?!?!
Thanks for the replies so far, guys!
scbrother: I can get the HD2 for $100 less than the Nexus One... And the screen of the HD2 is pretty attractive to me. (Plus, it has real multitouch unlike the Nexus)
All I want to know is if Android on the HD2 is as good as a native experience. In other words, if I can just ignore WM altogether and use Android as my main OS without any issues. The camera's not a big deal to me, but I would like to have functional 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
I love my android HD2. My only experience using native Android was on the G1. This blows it out of the water (its also significantly newer hardware).
As someone said earlier: if you like to tinker and play with your phone and don't mind reading a lot to find your answers, then go for it.
I've personally had fun tweaking and reading to get my phone running flawlessly. I enjoy it and haven't used WinMo for months now.
Good luck.

Alright well I did a lot of searching to see if there are any issues with stuff that I actually care about (ex. i don't care about the 3MP camera limitation, and 65k colours is not a deal-breaker), and the only thing I could find which I wasn't sure about was "PPP".
Can anybody here tell me what PPP is for? Is this the VPN stuff, or is it a totally different kind of PPP? If it's to do with VPN then no biggie, otherwise could anybody let me know what it is? Thanks in advance
Edit: Never mind I think I finally found out... Apparently 3G uses either PPP or RMNet, and PPP is much faster but currently not as stable on the Android ROMs... I hope I got that right! Well, assuming that this is an issue which will be fixed, I'm leaning more and more towards the HD2... I know a lot of people are saying "wait for the Desire HD" etc. but the problem is that those of us who use 1700MHz 3G don't really have too many choices!
If you decide on an HD2, make sure you get a t-mobile version. The unlocked version does not support 1700/2100 3g. The Tmobile does.
Ok so here's the thing. I've always been a phone modder, started with Motorola and have always used Motorola's, but frankly they just messed up with their Android phones which is why i have decided to abandon them. Now im considering buying an HD2, mainly because of the flexibility it offers modding wise, however i plan to use Android as my main OS.
The thing is, i know the HD2 wasn't built for Android, but my understanding of it is that it runs almost perfectly if you have the right radio/rom/android build combination, plus magldr will allow for native NAND boot and WP7 has been ported by Cotulla (I am unaware of the functionality of it). I was thinking about an HTC G2 but with it being locked from permaroot that kind of rules it out, and i've heard the hinge quality is terrible. Also, the HD2 has decent hardware for a year old phone, but newer phones are offering BT 3.0, A8 processor, dedicated GPU, S/AMOLED screens, etc.
So overall im looking for a phone that will give me the best bang for my buck, and is flexible modding wise (this is critical). I don't want a phone thats just push a button and it works, theres no fun in that. So what would you guys do? Go for the HD2 which is already a year old phone or get something newer (SGS, G2, Desire, etc)? Build quality is also something important, I dont want the phone with the best specs if its built completely out of cheap plastic. The HD2 is also the cheapest option of most current phones, so yeah.
All opinions are welcome.
If you plan to use it entirely for android then I think you want the Desire HD instead......
Price is an issue, the Desire HD is too expensive for me lol, besides its also permalocked
what do you mean by permalocked?......
maybe an evo if your in an area where you could make most of it......
if not then yeah you might as well go for the HD2.........

It means that the Desire HD and the G2 have built in protection that makes permanent root impossible as all changes to the eMMC are cached and erased upon reboot, so you can root the phone but it will be reset once you reboot. I can't use CDMA, has to be GSM

Didnt realise that....... im pretty clueless when it comes to android....
that however, has put me off ever replacing my HD2 with a native android device....
Did you consider the iPhone?
Just kidding.............
Lmao never! And it's just those HTC Android devices that are locked, i believe. Motorolas are also locked but i believe Samsungs are good
Just go and get it,Android works flowless on it, WM isnt as bad as they say it is.And the build quality is second to none,I just dropped it yesterday while taking a picture, not a single scratch.
WM is so much fun for tweaking, and Co0kie's Home Tab is a dream come true...
Android works amazingly - except for me battery-life remains an issue, so research this if you think it's your preferred OS.
But as a phone to tweak with, with a choice of 2 OS's and another 2 hopefully on the way, the HD2 is a fantastic choice, a great form-factor, and probably relatively cheap as it's a year old.

I could never trust a samsung, my fiance had 2 and they both broke.......
as much as I hate her iPhone I must say that it sure is a sturdy device to cope with what she puts it through on a daily basis..........
as for my next phone............ when I get an upgrade I think Im just gonna sell it and buy a couple of spare HD2's
So yeah I think you should opt for the HD2......
The galaxy s phones are really good. I myself am using a vibrant running a custom rom. Its an awesome phone especially once u start modding it. You should browse the vibrant forum and see what all is going on.

Shameless self promotion inc... Have a look here.
Thanks for the replies, i just got a Tmous HD2 on ebay for US$206
Has anyone completed a successful ROM port for handset 1.1 or 1.2...(I don't think 1.2 has been released) to mytouch 4g?
I am really looking to get meego handset on something with a full qwerty keyboard, and I know the mytouch slide 4g with dual core is set to release pretty soon, if meego has been ported to the myTouch 4g already, im sure the same instructions will work for the slide model...since the N950 is not available to John Doe's like myself
I am pretty good with hacking/porting things and tweaking what does not work, but as far as developing and compiling and image from scratch im not there yet, can anyone help...feel free to yell at me if I posted this in the wrong forum.
That doesn't exist on any of the android devices here AFAIK, now one has bothered with that. The hardware drivers don't exist to make all the parts function anyway.
thanks, well so much for that idea
There was some stuff about the hd2 getting it but I think that died
