Don't remove the screenprotector on the back - Xperia Z General

As the title says, Don't remove the screenprotector on the back. If you do say you will end up having what I have now....
Probably this is only will occur on the white XZ. Man this is really f*cked up to fix it. I hope its just the glue they use to stick the screenprotector, but it will take hell of a time to fix the back.

noooooo! Fu*k... please take a photo with light.
however, take care in

that's no problem, use some glue remover. you can buy it any shopping center.
it won't affect the case because it's glass.

Did you really have to remove it?
I understand removing it from the screen (because it smudges and the screen is scratch resistant anyway), as I did that to my previous phone myself.
But on the back? As if it makes a difference there...

Strange , im thinking to add second layer screen protector on it .
Its odd to find that there is ppl who want it removed .

Don't worry, it's just glue - like with previous Xperias. Use glue remover and you'll be fine.
I don't understand why people remove it though...it's protecting your screen from scratches and shattering, can't see how this is a bad thing - but that's everybody's personal choice.

Hahaha, I was still using the protective sheet on the rear glassl (the opaque one with the little guide info on it) because was worried that I would scratch it. But know that I discovered that also the rear glass has a protective sheet on it, I removed the other one

Yea I don't know why they put in so many protectors. One on each side is plenty and in time I will remove the front one (it scratches).
Two protectors on a display :silly:

This is not screen protector i think. Xperia has shatter proof film. You should receive standard screen protectors in box.

Yes, those definitely are the shatter-proof films which are *not* screen protectors. You are supposed to apply a screen protector on top of it.

Could you explain the difference then? To me, they're both sticky pieces of plastic that hold together the glass if it breaks and adds a layer so there's no direct contact with the actual screen. So the names might be different and the marketing as well, but I think they're basically the same product. Also, putting a screen protector on top of the shatter-proof film? Little silly if you ask me.

The difference is very simple.
Screen protector is used to prevent scratches - it's usually covered with oleophobic coating and made from harder materials to make it more scratch-resistant.
Anti-shatter film is applied using thermal methods after tempered glass is cut off. It's not nearly as hard as screen protectors, but is resistant to being cut, sliced or torn apart - it also absorbs tension and spreads it evenly. Also, since it's applied thermally, using special glue, it will hold pieces of the screen together even if it breaks. Normal screen protector won't do that, it'll just peel off. Dont believe ? Hit a car's side window with a hammer - it'll shatter into million pieces. Now do the same with the windshield - it'll break and bend in, but won't shatter.
I understand you might not like it - but please don't say that they're useless or silly. There is a reason why they put this film on car windshields, buildings' glass facades etc. It's not "just marketing", however you look at it.

Yea. The reason is those are situations where serious body harm can occur otherwise.
If I drop my phone and the screen shatters, #1 I won't put my hand into the shards #2 the phone is bin ready anyway.
The sheet is there for one reason and one alone: to stop people from tearing their fingers when the screen breaks and suing Sony.
No other phone manufacturer does this crap. It's because Sony assumes the worst from users, period.

Is it only sony that use this protective film?

don't understand why you would remove it in the first place. Why mess with a perfectly fine (asthetically) phone. Just needed to add a screen protector on top and that is that. Not like the back is important like someone mentioned.

Because it's impossible to get a scratch resistant protector on perfectly, and even if you do it will always have fuzz underneath.
Nothing can top a naked screen.

Looking at how some people remove it right away, because they "dont like" screen protectors - i think Sony is right to assume that.

Had absolutely no problems here, so it is possible after all.
Not trying to convince anyone - just saying that in my opinion it's a good thing and it shouldn't be removed if there's no need to do so.

included screen protector??

i just got my touch pro and have no idea how to apply the included screen protector...any help??
Generally speaking, this is the "standard" application method:
http://www.martinfields.com/video/Application.mpg
There are some tricks to help prevent air bubbles, such as this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewH-xONFN3Y
I went with a slightly different procedure I learned elsewhere. I filled a small bowl with about 1" of warm water, added a drop of mild, non-scented hand soap, and mixed it up so that there were few bubbles in the water. Placed the screen protector in the water to give it a good "wash" (to remove any dust). Then removed it from the water, shook off some of the excess drops, and applied it to the screen like normal.
The warm water made the film a bit more flexible which made it easy to squeeze out any trapped air, and the soap made it a slippery so it was easier to re-align. Once the protector was in place, I used a micro-fiber cloth to push most of the water drops out to the edge. There were a couple "dark" spots where water was still trapped, but they evaporated in about a day -- the important thing was to not have any air bubbles. The result:
Of course, you don't have to do something as complicated as I did. The real piece of advice is to just be very patient as you apply it.
im having a hard time separating the protector to reveal the adhesive side...i have been trying the last 30 mins with no luck at all only adding smudges to the protector and creasing it
someone plz help!!!!
Try to use your fingernails (if you have short fingernails, it's going to be a lot tougher). If that doesn't work, you can try a a super smal tear that will only rip a bit of the paper and not the protector.
i made a tear in the top part (above actual protecto) it seems like its only one layer...p.s. why does it include so many extra pieces of plastic??
Leant from a guy who applied for me in a shop in Hong Kong.
In addition to above mentioned tips, try to use sticky tape rather than your fingers to contact the screen protector.
You can also use sticky tape to stick out the dust.
When applying use something like a credit card to push bubbles out.
when i apply the screen protectors, i normally wash the adhesive side of the protector, then drop a few droplets of water on the screen; when you put the protector on the screen, you can then squeeze the bubble out with ease using credit card or just coin, and adjust the position to fit within 3 hours.
they should have included at least a PDAir type brand, not to mention a martin fields so that won't make our life like a living hell
I had completely no trouble applying the protector, without any soap or water.
It's a sticker... You just bend it in right direction, and the 'inner' plastic surface (protector itself) will pop off the base surface, leaving plastic frame around.
It's important no to place it flat on the device, but align one edge with screen edge, and while keeping it bent, apply evenly, going slowly from aligned edge to the other. No bubbles this way.
Even if you have bubbles, you can 'squeeze' them (move) to the side of screen and let them out.
Thanks to this thread, I discovered now that I also got these 2 included screen protectors in the package ;-)
Now, is it advised to apply both the protectors or only one?

I personally went one step further and put on latex gloves to avoid fingerprints and smudges. Also doing this in a damp/humid/steamy room like your bathroom helps avoid dust particles from swirling down onto the screen or the protector.
Hmmm... talk of condoms, latex gloves, and steamy rooms... let me just check if I'm still in the right forum!

such measures are not really necessary to apply a screen protector... i applied mine on a carpet in my room (which i havent clean in ages ), as long as you are careful, you can do it dust-free...
turn on the hot water in your bathtub, close the doors and vents, the room will be steamy in minutes. slap on the leather and bring out the whip, then you are set

Hi:
Unfortunately I can't afford my new Fuze til next month, but I have been doing ALOT of reading up, so I'll be ready when I get it. I have seen many people say that a screen protector is included, same has been said in the reviews I have read online. How to remove screen protector?

I have few bubbles between my HD screen and the screen protector and i would like to remove it.
tried with my fingernails but it didn't work. i just can't take out this screen protector and i don't want to damage
my screen by using some sharp tool.
What can i do?

Great idea. Thanks.
can you aply the screen protector that came with the HD more then once?
I think you probably could, but would need some an alchohol solution of some sort to reapply.
Personally i have a insivible shield by zagg which protects the whole phone for about £15.
I would suggest trying harder with fingernails, the protector is thicker than you think and i got mine off with a bit of a fight

Yes you can reuse them. Just gently wash the protector with hand soap and water (try not to bend it, keep it flat in your hand) and shake the excess water off and reapply.

I have the Invisible Shield fitted to mine , very nice and turns the rear of the phone Glossy Black, installing is fiddly but just be Patient, I had a few Bubbles in mine on the edges of the screen where there is a slight lip but after about a week its dried out and pretty perfect, I would recommend this shield to anyone who wants alot of protection, There are installation video's on the Zagg site which I would recommend watching First as the Palming tecnique on the corners is a must.
Hope this Helps
do they ship to Uk? or can u buy this shield in Uk? not a copy, but the official one, as looks impressive
Yesterday I started thread about if it is possible to scratch the display with the stylus..because i draw on my unit and I love it
And I was little worried that it may happen..people said that it not very likely to scratch but I may happen if some dust comes under the stylus tip or etc...
So I said OK I am cool...didn't apply it because it was too late and went to sleep...but I took my device to play a little more with it and what have I found?? SCRATCH!!! OMG...luckily just a little one but he is there, 455hole..
So today i wanted to apply the screen protector, first time in my life, it was pain the 455, I still couldnt get the bubbles out and blah blah..the nI touched the adhesive side and it got so dirty and ow damn
But as jdlorinser says, I hope it can be cleaned and reapplied...dont want to throw out just like that...
so this is my story
tip..
go to the bathroom,to put on the screen protector..WHY? because it's the most dust free aria in the house.
Don't use the protector that came with the hd,but buy a better one.
I use brando protector...This one is ant scratch, removable and washable...
just a tip.

Yeah, just thought of this after I read this post but you can also try the stuff that is used to fill in cracks for car windshields.
light scuffs
I've heard that white toothpaste can be used on light scuffs on plastic.
or perhaps Brasso polish?
The screen on the evo is made of gorilla glass, not plastic. Therefore acid based compounds such as applesauce or lcd scuff removers on the market would not work. The famous banana slice/peel trick doesn't work here either. Some compounds for watches only clean the surface of the glass and remove dirt from within the scratches, making the scratch less visible.
Your best bet is to clean the glass to remove all dirt then install a screen protector like invisibleshield to mask the scratches. This will work better since a liquid solution (usually 1 part soap and 9 parts water) is applied to the screen so you can squeegee out all the air during installation. The only downside to this is the texture feels like apple skin and screen clarity is affected...maybe 15-20%.

Not sure if it's made of Gorilla glass-- not saying that it scratches easily (because it probably doesn't), but I found I had a two very, very slight surface scratches on the screen after babying it for a month (always put it in an empty pocket with no keys/coins/etc, never set it face down, etc).
In any case, I wouldn't try using toothpaste, brasso, or any other solution on the screen except for an eyeglass/electronic screen cleaner as you'll probably end up creating more noticable scratches. Just clean the screen as well as you can, and throw on a screen protector, and you'll probably never notice the scratch-- most very small scratches are only noticable when viewing the screen at a very oblique angle to catch a reflected light source, and the screen protector blocks this.
Also, I wouldn't recommend the ZAGG. I had never used a ZAGG screen protector before, but have heard great things about them, and I'm not particularly picky or sensitive about screen protectors. However, I found the Zagg protector had a horrible rubbery feel to it, and gave the screen a really bad and noticable orange peel effect (actually, the effect seemed more like the screen was behind a 1/4" layer of ice). I put on a cheapo $1.99 screen protector from Gizmo Dorks (on Amazon.com), and the difference was like night and day-- the screen was just as smooth and clear as the original glass.
I have a few too... Leave it be and after a couple weeks you'll forget you even have them.
Can we buy the glass yet for this phone? I replace iPhone 3G and 3GS glass on an almost daily basis at work.

He might... but I'm not sure a $100 deductible + limited further coverage is worth a few small scuffs. I guess it depends on how bad they are, but if they are anything like mine it totally would not be worth it.

[Q] Screen easily scratched

I am on my second Arc and both screens are exhibiting scratches despite being kept in a pouch and not coming into contact with any hard surfaces. Anyone else notice these so called 'scratch resistant' screens are far from?
Are you sure it's the screen it self and not the screen protector that's on it?
Most people get the arc with screen protector already on it. look close maybe you will see it.
took the screen protectors off as they diminish the quality of the screen both look and touch wise. didnt think it would be an issue considering the marketing spiel about the mineral glass!!
from my experience with "scratch resistant" screens, unless its gorilla glass, get a screen shield.
Depends what you mean by removing the "screen protector".. the actual factory fitted, almost invisible screen protector??

Yes.. if you look at the very edge of the screen you can see where the factory fitted screen protector is.. it really is the best screen protector you'll get...

My 10 year old Omega Seamaster has mineral glass and showing no scatch what so ever. My iPhone4 with gorilla glass is one big scratch.
I have the Arc now and am very happy with it.
Hello,
Does anyone here with an Arc have removed the factory installed screen protector and have gone without applying another screen protector? How is your screen doing?
I'm changing screen protectors every two months and I hate to do it, but I want to know if the scratch resistant screen is indeed scratch resistant. I'd love to go without a screen protector, but I'm afraid to do so, unless someone without using one can tell me his/her story.
Thank you.
I know it's not the Arc, but check out this SE Xperia Active "screen torture"
Mine (arc s) had no protector for about a month and got 0 scratches...
Now Im using an oleophobic protector(Steinheil Ultra Series [Ultra Optics]) and I think is unnecessary because the screen already have a better oleophobic coating, also reduces the screen brightness
BTW my brother xperia x10 still without protector for over a year and have no scratches
Sorry for my english
My wife took off her protection and now we are having another baby! Jk she saw scratches right away I would recommend using a scratch protector, because even the so called gorilla glass can scratch with just regular use

Yup, that's it. It's *really* difficult to get off.
Removed mine about 6 months ago after it got scratched. Never bothered to install the spare that came in the box. Been keeping the phone in my pocket (with wallet, but no keys or coins in that pocket ever) and there are still no scratches whatsoever on the screen.
There are plenty of chips & scratches all over the rest of the phone though.

Are you absolutely sure you dont still have the factory fitted screen protector on it? Unless of course she's keeping it in a handbag filled with rusty nails and sandpaper, which is what my ex-gf seemingly used to do to anything she borrowed of mine...
Just like to point out something important, the protector that is factory applied and is hard to get off is a SHATTER PROOF SHEET! As the screen has been designed to be airtight (the gap between the screen at the touch layer) I have heard of people who have removed this protector and after dropping their arc, the whole screen shattered
This is why despite having a **** load of scratches, I'm too afraid to remove this cover, so I wouldn't really recommend it...

now, i thought the z1 had some sort of toughened glass, i noticed this morning that my display has a chip in the screen
i thought it might be something stuck, so i gently ran my fingernail over it and it's as though a tiny chunk has been taken out of the glass. wasn't there before, and i haven't dropped it or knocked it against anything (to my knowledge)
now that sucks, especially as i know it's there!
whoa that's hard..
but you sure it's not the anti shatter proof sheet that got chipped?

don't think so, running the fingernail on it, it feels like a chip in the actual glass
wasn't there when i got it, because i'm pretty precise about these things - i tried putting the screen protector on it when i got it but messed that up, so no external protector on it...

Is it front side? If yes could it just be the screen protector which every device has? My protector already has countless scratches, some pretty deep. Seems to be low quality for original sony...
okay then last question...
do you still have that Sony logo infront of your phone?
if yes, then it's the anti shatter proof that you chipped.. a pretty common case if it does
so if you remove it, you will get the bare Dragontrail glass but no oleophobic coating
getting a tempered glass screen guard is still the best choice as of now

yeah, the logo is still there, i guess it's the antishatter screen, i'm not going to remove that for now, will deal with it
will consider the tempered glass screen guard for now
i have no idea where or how it could have happened!
Isn't there any warranty covering something like this? Sony has been saying removing the asf voids your physical / cosmetic warranty for the screen. Doesn't the fact that the asf is still on and there is no evidence of dropping the phone then cover the damage under warranty?

Haha removing the sheet will get you a badass stealth look

WOAH! I don't want to freak anyone out, but this has happened to me too. Sony will fix it, but your warranty doesn't cover it
Is the chip a funny colour? As My screen was fine, then a chip has appeared, as if overnight, with a coloured hue to it :/
Freaking. Spooky.

I agree. When I tried to remove the ASF, it started to chip at the corner too. At first I though it was the screen itself but, if you look at it at ~175 degree angle, you will notice the crack which is on the ASF. Then I carefully remove the ASF. Once you remove the ASF, the screen will be all clear. I then put my screen protector on that I purchased from nillkin. Of course, the Sony logo will be gone, but IMHO, the phone will look more sleeker, have less fingerprint smudges, and less glare.
Let me guess, the chip or scratch is located a bit to the side of the screen.. More likely on the place where you place your thumb the most..... Because a repeated nail friction could damage the sheet pretty fast...
It happened to my Z1 too, but applying a screen protector on it helps hiding the damage quite a bit

i spoke with sony who asked me to send it in
so will send it to them and see what they say - me being me, i can't stand to see that little chip in the screen!!
when i get it back, i'll put a screen protector on it - now to find a screen protector which doesn't take away from the good looks of the phone!

Let us know how you get on mate, I want to send mine into Sony, but A) I'm scared it's going to cost £60+ to fix and B) they want £10-£15 to send the phone back to me :/
I've got a tiny piece missing all of a sudden. I swear it's been treated with love but I think it's the ASF. Very disappointing from Sony on a premium product.
