Optimus 4X HD query - Hardware Hacking General

Hi there!
I currently have the Galaxy Nexus phone and i'm looking to replace it with a new-ish phone. I heard about the quad-core Optimus 4X HD but after reading the reviews and videos online i have some questions especially:
1. Very bad autofocus on camera
2. Lags galore when playing graphics-intensive games (which you would expect a quad-core phone can handle)
3. Wifi issues - when held in a specific way
4. Very poor speaker output and/or audio output quality
5. Poor battery life even though its 2150mAh
Has these issues been addressed lately with some software updates from LG/Google? Still no word on a Jelly Bean update?
Please advice. Thanks.

1. Latest ICS Update fixes this, kinda.
2. Correct for some titles.
3. Maybe true, dunno. Worked for me.

Thanks for the reply but it still doesn't give me the confidence of buying the Optimus 4X HD.
The actual phone itself was made available late Summer 2012. The Nexus 4 came out around that time as well albeit some supply issues and the N4 has Jelly Bean as it's stock OS. Its currently March 2013 and still no word or info from LG about the JB update.
I still think LG hasn't learned from last year. Very slow updates on their phones (not even minor bug fixes now & again) and seemingly the same old issues (like poor battery life, lag in app transitions & games, poor autofocus, poor audio output, etc.) have been plaguing their phones from the past 2 years.
How can one be certain and reassured that a JB update is coming and that the update will somehow fix those common issues and problems?

we all know how bad LG is with updates...
they also dont release sources so not many roms..look at the optimus g for example

G2x is **** .... used it personally and glad I got rid of it.
You will not regret switching to sgs2
I personally don't have any issues, but you can scroll thru the general section and find threads on screen issues, battery life issues. But again not even 1% of long list of g2x issues.

Well someone made a thread that the LG G2X will get Cyanogen MOD and the SGS II hasn't got it yet despite the G2X being available before the SGS II so maybe you should take that into consideration instead of the speed and awesome Samsung stock experience that the SGS II brings.

G2X is a great phone but SGS2 is just way better.

well, you asked this question in the sgs2 section and got 5 views and 4 answers (the first view is your own, when the thread is successfully created). of course everybody here immediately jumps to tell you how great this device is, because we all have it and are rather biased.
if you were to ask the same question in the g2x section, it would be the other way around, as certainly there are factors speaking for either device.
the only way to neutrally decide for yourself is to find direct comparisons. you could use pdadb or comparable sites to just compare the specifications and decide, what's important to you. you could also ask in the general section of the forum to filter out fanboys of the respective devices (including myself ).
if you are lucky, you will find a direct comparison video on youtube which shows you all the advantages and disadvantages of the devices.
for me, it goes way beyond just the hardware. you should also think about the manufacturer's special factors, like touchwiz4.0, kies and the manufacturer's service quality and speed, when it comes to the warranty or other service requests.
and of course, personally i'd have to pick the sgs2 as i love touchwiz, and kies is ok as well, while i know from past experiences with other products, that lg's service is even slightly better than samsung's.

The G2X sure is a great phone. If you're one of the lucky dozen people who got one that works. It reboots randomly, has screen bleed from barely acceptable to OMG, overheats regularly, freaks out moving between 2/3/4G and Wi-Fi, forgets settings for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and has been expecting an update to 2.3.3 for three months now (the SGS2 is on its fourth in two months). There's a reason people had to exchange them 3-5 times just to get an acceptable one. That's why T-Mobile stopped selling it and the front page of the G2X forum usually looks like a war zone. If you're happy swell, many of us abandoned ship and cut our losses along time ago.
OP, if you've read the O2X and G2X forums and are still willing to make your choice based on published specs alone disregarding people's real-world experiences, then they're both great phones.

No, if your G2X does not have problems keep it.
My wife has a 2X for 2 months now and I a I9100 for 1 month, none of us had any sammy or lg phone before so i think i am objective.
LG Optimus 2X / G2X
- 1 hang in 2mo
- couple of times wifi not found and needed reset
+ hdmi connector
+ much lower temperature after playing a movie
+ better lock and feel
+ nvidia tegra games
Samsung Galaxy S2
- pink camera spot
- 2 seconds camera lag (EDIT)
- too iphonish
- MHL cable expensive and does not work without external power ?
+ 512Mb more ram but you will see no difference because of that (maybe 6mo form now but why not wait till then and get a 4core)
2X's screen is very nice, i could not see any major difference to SGS2 (maybe i am not that demanding on screen).
2X makes photos with less noise in low light compared to SGS2 and does not have that pink spot that drives me crazy. 1080p movies on G2X are @24fs vs @30 fps.
hdmi out on 2X is great, we use it as out media player because is easier to carry and setup then the laptop. i completely gave up on my thoughts to buy a media player box (i know, i know, i am to lazy to move a laptop 5 meters).
I have the feeling the long awaited gingerbread update on LG will fix the bugs and hope it will enable [email protected] (tho you can do that now if you are rooted).
Overall i think value/money is on LG side and i find it somehow unfair it received so much bad press (or maybe we are in 10% who get a device without problems).

probably because you forgot how good the browsing is on the S2, how it plays flash in 1080p on YT, how actually the pink spot isnt that widespread, etc etc ;-)

I will prefer the lg only for miui support......!

yes, browsing is better on sgs2 but if you make 5 minutes break and switch from sgs2 to g2x will never know the difference is speed. i expect the gap to shrink once 2x gets gingerbread.
You Tube limits me to 480p in both devices (just tried) and that is because your phone screen is 480p (800x400) over that is just wasted bandwidth as your screen can't display more. Tell me how to play YT on 1080p and will try it on both phones.
btw while trying to find a 1080p on pocket now i noticed this fresh news T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread Coming Soon According to Forum Mod
don't tell me pink spot on sgs2 is not that widespread, it was as 3-4cm on the center of my screen so that is huge widespread for me (just updated my camera firmware and now seams gone, was huge frustration for me)
don't get me wrong, i am not saying that sgs2 is not the king just that 2x is very good for the money (in my view) and i would not sell a 2x to buy a sgs2.

As a former owner of a G2X, and there are quite a few of us here, the phone is a piece of crap. It's fantastic that your wife got a fairly decent specimen of the O2X but if you look at how pervasive the issues are on both the O2X and G2X forums you've got your head in the sand if you think the phone isn't seriously flawed. And it's taken LG's trained programming monkeys almost three months to come up with a 2.3.3 update that's supposed to make the phone work and it's still not out yet. Samsung's updated half their Android line to 2.3.4 and issued four updates to the SGS2 in less time. There's a reason the phone's so much cheaper than all other dual-core phones - you get what you pay for. The G2X was the buggiest and least reliable phone I've ever owned. In contrast, the SGS2 is solid as a rock.

I had an o2x before I jumped onto the SGS2 bandwagon, and I must say i'm impressed.
At first I was quite skeptical, but it turned out that Exynos feels much snappier than tegra 2.
Also, I'm experiencing a lot less battery drain on SGS2 compared to o2x. I'd say you should definitely consider migrating to SGS2
Too bad CM7 is not on SGS2 yet, but it's definitely coming soon

YT doesn't limit anything, play it with flash in the browser (or html5).
720p is better quality on the screen than 480p because the compression setting YT use at 720p is better than at 480p, its not just about the resolution.
at 1080p it's even better although the difference isnt really worth the slower download.
i also do switch between several phones and i notice immediately how much faster the SGS2 is during browsing compared to Tegra phones (albeit its mostly due to the GPU accelerated browser - but still, others don't have it)
for me its worth the 100e (that said, most buy them at 29E with 2y contract)

I currently have the Galaxy Nexus and looking to replace it with the Nexus 4. I have tried the phone several times in shops, read reviews and seen the hundreds of videos on Youtube and have noticed some negative things that might affect my purchase like:
1. Short battery life - even at 2100mAh and with minimal usage it still doesn't quite last for a whole day even on standby.
2. A not-so sharp screen - using this so-called "grey screen" test it was shown to be weaker than the previous-gen Galaxy Nexus
3. Wifi bugs - again when the phone is held in a specific way the wifi signal becomes affected
4. Muffled incoming calls
5. Frequency distortions when a headphone is connected
6. Weak & tiny speakers sound (just like Galaxy Nexus)
7. Very poor speaker grill placement
8. An "average" camera photos
Aside from the hardware issue has the other issues been resolved via software updates? And is Google aware of these issues?
We all know the wonderful and powerful specs (and OS) the Nexus 4 has but these issues seems to be on my head.

Just my two cents:
1. Battery life is way better then my old HTC Sensation (like...i needed a spare battery for it if i had a long day at uni whereas my nexus last for a whole day of heavy use)
2. The screen is not AWESOME in stock, but it's pretty darn good. A custom kernel on the other hand makes it much much better then anything you have seen, trust me.
3. Wi-Fi working without issues here as well. I'm sure you're referring to the "Deathgrip" issue which mostsmartphones have...don't worry about it too much. You can always hold it in a different way if you find your wi-fi signal level unacceptable
4. Incoming call quality is top notch...didn't notice any problems. The earpiece is really loud even! I use it at minimum volume!
5. Didn't notice that either.
6. It's not too bad. There are audio mods which improve the volume and sound quality across the board (this applies to 5,6,7)

8. The camera is much much better then the one in my old HTC Sensation. And i mean...MUCH BETTER!
So i guess it all depends on which phone you're coming for. Me? I'm extremely happy with my purchase

It doesn't appear that you want to buy the N4. That's fine, you've done your homework and came to a smart decision. But if you did as much research on the Galaxy Nexus you would have found similar complaints about it and would not now own it.

Solution for those problems:
Downloadnflash paranoid android or cm or just stick with stock.
Then flash Francos kernel, do some UVing and there you go. Use BBS(better battery stats) to find what's causing your drain if you ever do buy a nexus 4.

Well, i did my homework when it comes to reviews online from well-known websites (Amazon UK, CNET, GSM arena, etc.) but i haven't decided if the Nexus 4 is NOT for me or not. I am merely expressing my views on what i read and what i read or seen on video reviews are always there, always (almost) consistent and always the same problems.
Sure it might be a factory defect or a very select few but still it causes me to do some thinking.
Why is the "deathgrip" issues still there regardless of what phone you have?
I usually (and most of the times) hold the phone in my left hand. And that basically covers the speaker grill at the back. It's not like ALL THE TIME and not all the time i'm expecting a phone call whilst i'm holding my phone with my left hand. I just think it's a bad place to place the speaker grill.
Has anyone actually tried the "grey screen test" for the screen to check for any inconsistencies or broken pixels or something?
So far all of you say the battery life issue ISN"T an issue at all. I'm just slightly worried that all reviews i read say otherwise. I still think with the specs the N4 has the minimum battery capacity should be 2300mAh or even more. I have an extended-life battery 2300mAh for my Galaxy Nexus. I charge it for 7 hours overnight. Use it to commute to & from work. Whilst at work i put it on Airplane mode and don't use it that much. When i go home i put it on normal mode. By 9pm the battery is down to 30% and it goes downhill from there. And this is whilst the wifi is turned-onat home and doing the basics of tasks like checking my Twitter, Instagram, updating apps and minimal news and stuff. So with that in mind i still think 2100mAh is not enough.
Regarding the camera photos quality...well i'm not into ROM's or MODs etc. I want mine the stock Android. But if anyone has anything in mind like apps to improve/tweak the camera and improve the battery life then i would greatly appreciate it.
Does the Nexus 4 have "HD voice"? And does it have some kind of noise cancellation when hearing from the earpiece or making a phone call so it stays clear even if your in a noisy environment?

Agreed. Awful speaker placement, which isn't helped at all by the fact that the back is completely flat.

I haven't but I can tell you from simple usage that there's nothing wrong with the screen. A custom kernel definitely helps a lot, but if you leave it as stock you'll still be happy.

This was an issue I was worried about before getting my phone too, but my experience with it so far has been great.

I don't think there's any HD voice, but there is a noise cancelling mic on the top. Either that, or my phone has a random hole in it

Since you haven't numbered it this time, I just answered in red

With 4.2.1 stock, it was too aggressive when it came to onlining cores so you'd end up with 4 online cores when reading Facebook lol. Which is cool for project butter, but isn't too battery efficient. Even if you don't root it, 4.2.2 is better when it comes to stuff like that, so battery life is definitely not like it used to be. Most reviews are based on 4.2.1, so...
The only other phone I'd trade this nexus for is lumia 920, but I don't want an unlocked version and T-Mobile doesn't have it. The reason I'd take that is due to me loving Xbox music so much.
Even new phones coming out, yea, they are pretty beefy but don't offer stock android experience. To me, I always found touch wiz laggy and ugly. Sense ui was decent, but too buggy and updates never came. Point is, I personally love stock android, it feels so smooth, even if benchmarks don't reflect it. If you like stock, definitely the phone to go with.
Sound quality is great, noise canceling is good. I used to have gs3 and there were a lot more times when people had issues hearing me when it was windy.
Camera is good, it isn't lumia 920 type camera, but it does take good pictures, flash is pretty good too. I found galaxy nexus camera to be crap, I'm happy with this one.
I dunno what carrier you plan on using, but connectivity is much better for me then galaxy nexus. Not only does it support hspa42, which literally gives me 22mbps vs 10mbs I used to get, but it stays connected to hspa better. But, it still isn't as good as some other phones still because I know that couple of times I'd get stuck on edge when I shouldn't.
I like the way this touchscreen is too, seems more responsive than gnexus was.

I am not a fan of custom kernels, rooting or CM ROM's and i would prefer the "normal" updates here & there by Google/LG.
If there is an app to somehow (not magically but if it were then the better) make the speakers louder, make the photos more saturated/sharper/more contrast and further improve the battery life (instead of the usual turning off the GPS, bluetooth, brightness, etc.) then i would be happy with.

Speaker volume is great, it's just the quality that you may need to worry about

I'll answer your questions from what I've experienced.
1.Not sure what you've been doing, but I've been getting 15+ hours and I'm only down to 47%. I use the internet now and then, and play games alot during school.
2. I'm not sure what you're talking about, but it's still a really good screen. I'm not one to be picky of the screen, but i'm happy with it. Only thing I wish was if the colors were more true, but hey, it's still a really really good phone. One of the best, if not the best phone in market.
3. That's never happened to me. No matter which way I hold it, I still get good wifi wherever I am.
4. Muffled calls? That's never happened to me. I can clearly hear the person on the other end all the time.
5. Never even heard of this before. The only thing I can think of causing this would be having an app that wasn't fully compatible with the software/rom on your phone.
6. Coming from the mytouch 4g, the speaker on this phone is really an upgrade. Although it isn't the best on the market, its still pretty loud and you can make it louder if you want with a mod like Eizo.
7. No comment on this, it's the design of the phone. If you let the placement of something ruin your chance of having a good phone, i'm sorry ,but that's ridiculous.
8. Camera photo quality for me is awesome. With the new HDR function android camera's, it makes pictures just as high quality as iphone pictures. Only thing that annoys me is the speed of the camera when HDR is activated. It has to take 3 pictures and blends them together to create one high res picture, but the outcome is worth it.
I'm not one to go looking for problems, but all the problems that have happened to me, they've all been solved with updates for the ROM i'm using, or i just find a solution myself to solve the problem. None the less, a lot of the problems people face can be solved by using the search bar and looking for a solution, or with an update to the software or ROM on your phone.
Once again, this is all from my perspective. Others might have a different opinion on this. In the end, this is still an amazing phone. Better than the iPhone IMO (except the camera.) It's your choice if you want to get this compared to the other phones in the market.

I think there are some apps in the app market that can do that. Volume + , or volume boost, just search volume booster or something.

I'm actually choosing between the Nexus 4 and the slightly older Optimus 4X HD which was made by LG (same as the N4) and has been plagued by almost the same issues especially that LG is notoriously known for very poor customer support and very slow updates. but the Optimus itself is an amazingly-specced phone.
No contest?
A good 2nd choice for the Nexus 4 you think?

My advice: Get Nexus 4. I currently own an Optimus 4X HD, despite it's great specs, I must say this phone is a let down.
Why you shouldn't get an O4X:
1. Battery performance super sucks. I managed only to get 12 hours with light usage (I mean, LIGHT)
2. Tegra chipset isn't really compatible with some games. I tried NFS, Nova and it's laggy
3. Update support is extremely poor. I'm still stuck with 4.0.3 and JB update is still indefinite to arrive
Browse O4X thread and see for yourself how many O4X users are unhappy with their handsets.
So, get a N4 and live a happy life.

The specs of the 4X HD looked great until I saw the words 'Tegra 3' on GSMarena. You'll be very frustrated with the performance of the Tegra 3, it's quite an awful chipset. Sure, there are tonnes of Tegra optimised apps, but the fact of the matter is that my friend's One X on JB still lags due to the Tegra 3. Even relatively light games such as Super Hexagon (you should try it out if you haven't) and Temple Run 2 (I know it isn't that light but for a phone of this gen it shouldn't be a problem) lag on it.

Then i have to say that the nexus is not the device for you. The coolest thing bout nexus devices is that they are really easy to mod and customize. If you don't plan on doing that, there's no point in getting a nexus device. However, the N4 has the added bonus of being cheap but it still might not be enough for some users (yourself included apparently)

The reason why i'm not a fan of custom kernels and ROMs is maybe perhaps i haven't done it before and i might further "damage" the phone's OS and i might not be able to revert the OS back to its factory settings.
I'm still quite happy with JB on my Galaxy Nexus. The stock version of JB is very slick and i would imagine how even more smoother it is on the Nexus 4.
So far the complaints of the O4XHD has been kind of a viscious circle. Lag has been the word for today. And the fact that it has no JB makes it even more frustrating. I have just emailed LG and their reply re: my list of issues is that there has "been no known issue" with the said phone and they have no word as to when JB is incoming.
The Nexus 4 has still its flaws i think and that doesn't mean it is that good. But now, i'm more geared toward this phone as a "safe" choice rather than the O4XHD.

may i ask sth as well..
regarding the sensitivity issue on the screen, is it regarded as a software issue, or a hardware one?

I was a (very) happy Galaxy S2 user and wanted to do the bump with the S4. I've got it with a very expensive price plan from Vodafone (yeah, blame me on that) and now I'm having a hard lifetime concerning payments and all that nasty stuff nobody wants to know about. I'm just explaining this to add for the disappointment I'm having with this new phone.
First it was the poor audio quality (yeah, I do really think S2 sounded better even if it had a poorer DAC), then it was the greyish LCD look of the screen (AMOLED, right?), the purple smearing & the slow response of pixel drawing... So, Today I've received the MEA OTA update and the phone got worse: faster battery draining, 1s camera lag, Adapt Sound (ace utility if you ask me) stopped working and never came back, some UI mistakes... issues well long and discussed in here.
Thing is, this phone is brand new, just got it for 6 days and I was also thinking of buying HTC ONE at first because audio DAC quality and, why not, to taste another Android flavour.
So my question would be: Would you recommend to exchange/switch it with somebody else for the HTC ONE on secondhand market? Or is it just a matter of lazy samsung devs? Will it get better (ie issues resolved) in some time? I'm just asking for oppinions, certainly nobody can give us those answers for real, but for the sake of wellness...

I am also one of the guys who upgraded from s2..so far i am very happy with it..if u r talking abt the music playback audio quality then its way better than s2..so either u got a faulty device or u should factory reset and then apply the update again..no lags here..

lag: I do have lag now, sunday night I was making pictures with Zero Lag alright (very impressed coming from an S2) and today, after the OTA update, I've got the camera firmware update and started to have shutter lag. My girlfriend's S3 does pics almost instantly, way faster than this.

Perhaps you should do what everbody does, and root it with a good Romsuch as Cyanogenmod or a good touchwiz one and you'll appreciate it.
I'm also disappointed since i feel my S2 was just as fast and as good.

S2 with NeatROM 4.8 was just as fast and as good as this S4, indeed. I do appreciate the FullHD screen compared to these 480x800, but instead we've got a greyish screen... and I do expect a quality product when I buy the flagship of Samsung, tbh.

Try a MF8 rom. Might fix some issues. Using it and have no problems. Smooth and fast. Dont know about cam lag because I dont have a reference point.

Oh, I see. Don't worry. I'm more confident with this screen and its response, although this isn't the phone I was expecting... and getting a i9500 is out of the question.
About MF8 rom, well, changelog doesn't look more promising than this MEA I have now.

Is Z3+ worth the MONEY?

Hi guys (especially to z3+ users)! I would like to buy a Z series Xperia phone. So far (aside from the Z5), Z3+ is the only Z series that has a 5MP front camera (front cam is one of my criteria in choosing a phone). My other options are M5 and Z2 (but Z2's front camera is only 2MP..) I am also concerned with its overheating issue..is that really true or just a black propaganda? Is this phone worth the money?
By the way, if you will rate your satisfaction of Z3+ from 1 (LOWEST) to 10 (HIGHEST), what will be your score?

I suggest you wait until 5'1.1 update shows up. Because now most of us facing poor battery life and heat issue.
You know what, I compare my z3+ with my Z1
Most of the time Z1 open apps faster, despite it's three generations older.

My z3+ does really have heat issue, and when it gets hot device run slower and start to lag.

I don't have heat problems and it runs smooth from the last update z3+. Yes it gets warm not hot. It's normal if it gets warm a little bit. So far i am satisfied.

If you have one of those devices which doesn't overheat so the answer would be yes. In the other hand, It's an expensive brick or toaster. My Z1 was a much better device even 2 years later. The battery last nothing, overheats a LOT (after updating to the latest version is working better but still) and the performance drops significantly. I'm about to returning it because I don't want to wait until Sony decides to give us a proper solution and I can barely use it (I tried all the possible software fixes). The problem is that I don't like other device (maybe Oneplus Two but it's too difficult to get).

Don't worry. Z3+ is a Z series Xperia. Sooner or later, it will get a software update. This phone is even included in the upcoming Marshmallow update

Not for all users works, before last update two factory resets give a usable (not ideal) Z3+, after last update, three repairs and two factory resets give an almost-non-usable device that gets so hot so easily.....
Much of this variation is due to usage difference, so also depends in what is yours....
In general I think my z3c has (a lot) better performance, but I also think some software updates will solve all major issues, still I have to say I'm a little disappointed with this phone...

Haven't noted much issues with overheating, but I've only played a bit of games here and there on it. Still waiting for a rooted firmware before I make it my daily driver.

I think it is. It's a great phone with one big flaw everyone keeps talking about, and that will probably be fixed at some point.

The phone does not need root It's performance is as good as rooted ones.

Uhhm at this point Im really disappointed with this device peformance..It gets really hot even tho after 251 update android 5.0.2...It really sucks If I would compare Z3 and Z3+. My Z3 is way faster..my z3+ are so damn slow...but the design of z3+ is so much better... This is my judge for now..I really hope that a new update is coming and some custom roms will hit online soon. Maybe I will skip this device and buy a Z5...lets see if the update will change my mind

I'm not sure if you've noticed but the process of unlocking the bootloader in order to root the phone removes the DRM keys and diminishes camera performance, amongst other things.
This has nothing to do with performance and everything to do with restoring app backups as helium doesn't work properly on the z3+.
So unless you can suggest a way to do that (as well as installing cerberus on the system partition, uninstalling sony bloatware, spoofing mac addresses for fun and profi etc) then I would make the argument that rooting is required, well at least for me anyway.
Yes I am aware of the pre-rooted kernel by devires, but I'm waiting for dl12345's publicly released solution before taking the plunge.

Am begging for an update that fix heat problem, if this is fixed I can say is totally worth.

In terms of satisfaction, for me it's 9/10 -- for things it can do for me that off-set the negative PR.
Mainly it loses a point because the native camera app cannot record video 'forever' - the native camera app shuts itself off saying the phone is too hot after about half an hour. However using Google Camera app for video I can record 1080P video basically forever.
But it justifies points with me for the following from the top of my head-
+ Stereo sound recorded with video (coming from iPhone this is MAJOR for me)
+ microSD expandable to 128GB
+ internal SSD is 32GB which is much better starting point
+ OTG capability
+ Waterproof* with capless USB port
+ No buttons on the front (no really, I love this)
+ Call quality sounds better than my old iPhone 6 Plus
+ Decent camera for stills and video
+ Sony take audio seriously, also nice to find a mild dynamic compression option for music
+ Battery stamina modes are useful compared to anything on iOS 8 (I guess same exists on iOS 9 now)
+ If I get a notification on my phone without dismissing it but catch up on my computer - the notification dismisses itself on the phone (unlike iOS where it would never sync like that)
+ 3GB RAM, FWIW this doesn't impress me but hey
+ 64bit so in theory should have some longevity (famous last words)
+ Cheaper eco-system than iOS, no more £17.99 sync cables (I swear my kids chew them or something)
+ Really easy to record the screen (which presumably could also record phone calls - interesting), can also record the screen whilst engaging the selfie camera PiP
Currently on 5.0.2, I do think update to 5.1.1 (or M) will make this phone even better based on how 5.1.1 performs on my Z2 (which was second-hand refurb gateway to my Z3+)
The Z3+ does get warm when it's working hard (Star Wars Uprising) but in general use I don't notice any thermal issues even if they do exist.

Hi, I need some advice on which device I am going to buy. I'm going to use this I guess 3 to 5 years as I dont replace my phone that often so this thread will help A LOT. I'm basing on some reviews, speed tests, but the two seems to be on par with each other. Price is/may kind of an issue here as I would love to use some of the money (if I buy the OP5) for the after sales and some personal stuff. However if the Note 8 is really "bang for the buck" then I'll gladly go with it. I also tried to search some issues. Here's what I found so far:

If this is a point to consider, I'm coming from a Xperia Z3Compact which didn't last long (I hated sony to the hell because of this) because of the digitizer issue. However, I enjoyed tweaking that phone. Now I'm forced to use my iPhone5s with jailbreak.
Note: Just to be clear, the devices in comparison are OP5 8gb/128gb and Note 8 6gb/64gb Exynos
Note: I'm posting this to each respective forum to have a fair discussion for each phone. I hope this is allowed. I also hope to help some people that have the same options with me.

Thank you guys. After a long comparison, I'm going for the OP5 even with the rumors of OP5T. I just hate the back fingerprint scanner placements which is the trend now. And regarding with the bezels, I'm more into those phone with bezels on top and bottom for landscape usage. I've been trying the S8+, and some games that I play doesn't maximize or utilize the whole screen which leaves some part of the screen blank. However, the screen in the Note 8 is A1 dont get me wrong, but I'm more into the performance and the OP5's screen is enough. Thank you guys!

You are on the OP5 forum so replies can't be realistic... I prefer the OP5 anyday over any Sammy device for just one reason: the OS. I prefer a clean near stock Android OS over the bloated TW UI but that's just me. Note 8 is a great device and all of Samsung hardware is very well made, but the almost double price and the OS give my vote to the OnePlus 5.

I've seen the HTC U11, but I'm not a fan of the shiny back and HTC as well haha. About the V30, I guess I can consider it but this bootloop issue prevents me to check on it. Also, I updated the post and added the Jelly effect. Have you experienced it?

No jelly effect on my device.

I came from a s8 and s8 plus and so far beside the screen which to me the op5 looks great screen wise obviously not as great as the s8 but still awesome. And the design of the op5 is more of a shared look with smart phones.
Beside that I am very impressed with the onep5 I do not regret the giving up my s8 for this phone. It's so damn smooth and fluid I've had no hiccups.

I have none of the issues on my oneplus 5 that you mentioned
I'm happy with it.

Well your cons for the OnePlus 5 I don't have any of them. My GPS is rock solid as I use it for work at 2+ hours a day. Locks in seconds and never see drift. Bluetooth? I connect to my 2011 Nissan with no issues and connect it to audio adapter (MPOW to stream Bluetooth Audio to my AUX port) and 2 sets of headphones... never an issue with quality or connectivity. My phone never gets hot and while gaming, i barely notice it gets slightly warm. (EX Kernel manager shows CPU temp at 98F after 30 min of asphalt 8.
Maybe you have a phone you should RMA? But there is no way in hell I'm paying $1000 for ANY smart phone when I can get a phone that's better performing, has longer battery life, faster charging, clean basically Stock Android and likely faster updates then Sammy. I used to be a big Sammy fan but not since i left my Note 4 and got a Nexus 6P and now the OP5.
This isn't a bias, these are what I look for in a phone and the things that made me choose this phone over the S8+, LG G6 and the HTC U11.
The one Phone I would look at today compared to the OP5 is the new LG V30. Simply because It will support the new 600mhz band 71 from T-Mobile. I'd have to see how the battery holds up and how well the OS is optimized cause I'm not a fan of LG and it's skinned OS and it's much slower charging speed.
Update: I forgot to mention the Jelly effect. I heard people saying it effects every phone but I got my OP5 on launch day and I can tell you more then a dozen people have looked at my phone and no one can see a "jelly effect" If mine has it it's so minimal its not noticeable. I believe the severity vary's a lot.

Beside that I am very impressed with the onep5 I do not regret the giving up my s8 for this phone. It's so damn smooth and fluid I've had no hiccups.

Maybe you have a phone you should RMA? But there is no way in hell I'm paying $1000 for ANY smart phone when I can get a phone that's better performing, has longer battery life, faster charging, clean basically Stock Android and likely faster updates then Sammy. I used to be a big Sammy fan but not since i left my Note 4 and got a Nexus 6P and now the OP5.
This isn't a bias, these are what I look for in a phone and the things that made me choose this phone over the S8+, LG G6 and the HTC U11.
The one Phone I would look at today compared to the OP5 is the new LG V30. Simply because It will support the new 600mhz band 71 from T-Mobile. I'd have to see how the battery holds up and how well the OS is optimized cause I'm not a fan of LG and it's skinned OS and it's much slower charging speed.
Update: I forgot to mention the Jelly effect. I heard people saying it effects every phone but I got my OP5 on launch day and I can tell you more then a dozen people have looked at my phone and no one can see a "jelly effect" If mine has it it's so minimal its not noticeable. I believe the severity vary's a lot.

I'm really a fan of SPen but the price really kills it. I thought the price would go lower because of the Note 7 issue haha! I've read some reviews about V30 and its impressive. However I'm really not a fan of LG's OS. I tried G6 and its not for me. But I'll try V30 some other time. About the jelly effect, when I've seen the issue in youtube it made me dizzy a little bit but I dont know if I'll be affected in real life. There little to no demo phones of OP5 here in my country. I've seen the HTC U11, but I'm not a fan of the shiny back and HTC as well haha. About the V30, I guess I can consider it but this bootloop issue prevents me to check on it. Also, I updated the post and added the Jelly effect. Have you experienced it?

Well, I purchased the phone 1 week ago, and yes, Jelly Effect is presented, but it's barely to notice. So really nothing which I'd somehow annoying. And the performance and battery life of this phone are outstanding

go for oneplus5.. best device that you can get...samsung sucks

Yeah I also have a theory that the when the jelly effect on a video capture, that the recording enhances the effect, especially in slow motion. I think it's far fewer people say they see then the people who say they can't see it all all.

The Note's screen is better and the S Pen is great.
I owned a Note 4 but could got tired of all bloatware and Samsung in general. I know Touchwiz has improved but it's still too much.
Super happy with the OP5. I mostly used the S Pen for navigation and I use a simpler stylus I found on Amazon on the OP5 and it works great.
No issues with GPS, bluetooth or anything else for me.

The Jelly effect is present on my device, but I don't even notice it anymore more. Very rarely.
I'd go for the OnePlus 5 just because of the price. I can't see how the Note 8's camera, screen, waterproofing and microSD slot make up for that $500 difference. The Note 8 can't even make up for the $200 difference from the S8, and those are nearly identical phones in many aspects.
I chose the OnePlus 5 for the following reasons:
- Performance
- Development community and support
- Price
Samsung tends to have issues with all 3 of the above.
The biggest difference here being the price and you really need to ask yourself "Am I really getting my money's worth?"
I highly doubt the Note 8 is $500 better than the OnePlus 5 or 2-300 better than any other Flagship launched this year.

Very cool running device... GPS issue may have been the 911 bug, but that was quite a while ago.Jelly Screen seems non existent, but people like to report it never the less (even on moto phone....) Wifi issues? Might be because using inferior x12 modem so I'm disappointed. x16 modem is much better, which is what other flagships using 835 win at. Also oneplus 5 display isn't all that great, just 1080p, it does look good, HOWEVER no support for HDR content i've so ever wanted to view. but 1080p looks very good as any screen if few inches away from.

Kinda sick of hearing the jelly effect as a negative. It's not, its more of an accent flavor. Adding life to scrolling. As for those other issues i have never seen them outside of xXx's rom. Running stock 4.5.12 right now and took a nice drive and my device had me spot on every step of the 2 hour drive. it just depends on what you want. Best hope developer support for the note 8 is more than nothing. Oneplus devices live longer than most devices out there. hell the OPO is on oreo right now. go figure.

Overheating? This phone stays cool with heavy games for more than 40 minutes. I'm not saying as a pro for op5, the note 8 snapdragon version should be the same ( I don't know if there is a snap version for the note).
Jelly is present on EVERY op5, some people see it, some people don't. When I order it I think that the first thing to do was to check the jelly issue, it came and I use it for a day, I didn't remember the jelly issue until I read it in the forum again, and when I scroll fast up and down I see it, but I have to do a fast up and down scroll and be looking for it, I don't see it normal usage. Even it costs me a little to see it intentionally.
