New phone smells of mildew - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my replacement nexus, but when I got it out of the padded envelope I noticed a very strong smell of mildew coming from the phone box. I'm a bit apprehensive about opening it now...
Anyone else had this?

Just keep it in the box then....

Well if you don't open it you won't know for sure..

at least it doesnt smell like urine
open it up. if it was wet, youll know.

Might be the depot where it was stored. Mine was really cold when I got it. Like ice cold.

Opened it up today - there was some strange powder on the screen protector. The screen seems to be OK apart from a word light spot near the top which is about 3 pixels wide and Is brighter than the pixels around it. The screen coating seems to be
evenly applied on this one.
Edit: just spoke to Google and they've gonna replace this one too.

Battle Scars *OUCH*

So I'm trying hard to keep my phone from getting even one scratch until my cases come in, which should be any day now.....
....then today I freakin' drop it on the concrete by accident.
I feel like $#!t ...my heart sank.... damn it!!!
BUT, on the bright side I am very surprised on how well it took the hit. The phone dropped and actually rolled a couple of times, yet it only marked up the plastic/metal looking trim that goes around the phone.
By any chance do you think the rim piece would be available later for a replacement part? Gosh I sure hope so. I'm desperate to go rip off the trim at the T-Mobile store
...I keep telling myself....it could have been worse right?
Bottom line: For how hard it hit the concrete, I'm impressed...since it was dark I was thinking it was going to be way worse, until I held it to the light to see the damage. Thank goodness for not a cracked screen....
BTW: I have the 3M screen protector. If it wasn't for that it would have for sure had some mean scratches on the screen....sigh..
Ouch.. I did the same with my new Touch Pro (current phone) and it also ended up with some dings on the sides, but that phone's partially metal with a plastic screen.
Since one of the frequent criticisms of this series of phones is the build quality, glad it looks like the Vibrant's made pretty well after all if it can survive that with only cosmetic damage.
you should put a warning in the title, those pics are way to graphic.

Yea I agree that the Vibrant is well made. I've read a lot of some people commenting on the material and all, but obviously they have no idea how well the made it is. Heck, I'm kind of glad it wasn't heavy and bulky.....
"THE heavier they are the harder they fall..."
Kudos Vibrant....just can't wait to put a case on it to mask the scars....Soldier.

I know brother....I'm slowly getting over it though.... I can't wait until my black case comes in so I can put it on. At least I won't see the scars....
I dropped mine on the sidewalk few days ago and it just scratched up the top of the back lid so I just swapped it. My heart stopped for 2 minutes and I was afraid to look at my screen because when I dropped my hd2 it shattered the screen

Does the 3m screen protector reduce the quality of the SAMOLED screen a lot, or make it sticky?
Those pictures are nasty Hope you get your case soon!
OH MAN. I am week in the knees just looking at it!

dam that hurt me. i just got mine last night, hope i dont do the same
A gel skin would cover those up nicely. I decided to get one in the first place because even though I love the feeling of this phone without the skin on, I hate scratches/dents a lot more.
I had a bad track record with my G1 too... dropped it like 4 times
You should link me to where you bought your screen protector. I got Tmobile generic ones, but they suck, so I bought one from eBay. What I've got was this super thick, weird feeling protector, leaves too many bubbles, sucked. Bought another one, which is identical to ones you buy at the store, works good, but doesn't cover the bottom part of the phone.

I got mine from ClearFreak via Ebay - you cannot even tell it is on, I do have one air bubble trapped and it's a bit annoying on the bottom of the screen, I always feel it when swyping
Don't be too sad. I got a screen scratch the other day. Of course its real tiny and when I point it out to others, they can't even see it. But its all I see.

At least you got it over with. Now no more worries about dropping your phone. lol
At least you can cover it with a case, unlike scratches on a screen.
Ouch! That looks like it hurts.

The best one IMO is the one from clearfreak, which is the one I have. Just make sure when applying it, to follow their directions. You have to spray it with water, wet your fingers and squeegee the water out with the little tool it comes with.
It's made out of 3M and you can't even tell it's on. All the other screen protectors like the generic ones really mess up the touch response. It's not as responsive from what I've noticed. Stay away from chEapBAY if you know what I mean...those are all pieces of junk from china, hence 5x protectors for $0.99US

Same one I have and I love it....the 3M stuff is awesome, thank goodness if it wasn't for it I would have definitely have scratches from the fall.
You should write them and ask to exchange your screen protector. I actually got mine swapped out because I had some annoying lint on the sides and couldn't get it out so they swapped it.

I know that feeling! My heart literally stopped....The whole freakin' world stopped LOL....
I once had an HD2 as well and that thing weighs a ton. Bigger it is the harder it falls...That phones like half glass....miserable phone.

Very interesting you asked that because I was curious at first as well. However, I must say that once I did put it on, it didn't alter the quality at all.
As for it being sticky, I assume you mean on the surface when you glide your fingers across it right? Well...it depends if your hands are dry or not....it really doesn't bother me and I think it works fine...the only time it may be a little resistant is when your hands are sweaty. I think that would go for most all screen protectors though...

G2 did a triple lindy off my kitchen island

So my son knocked my G2 off the kitchen island yesterday. I didn't see it but I heard hit the tile. Upon inspection, I can't find any indication as to where it impacted. No scatches, scrapes, dents, cracks or bruises. My hinge is still tight as well. I can say that it was face down when I got to it and it was closed so I don't think the keyboard opened up.
So it seems I lucked out this time. Hope it doesn't happen again.

thats good lol... screen still work ok?
Everything still works fine. I expected to see a huge crack across the screen but there isn't even a scratch.

I haven't dropped mine (yet) but it's nice to know the phone might be pretty resilient!
A baby knocked mine off the table in a mall...and I have 2 very small scrapes in the metal ring on the front. However the phone still looks great, can bearly see the scrapes

The fact that the phone is tough..? Or the fact that accidents happen? Haha.
I purchased the black gel skin yesterday, and so far I like it. No kickstand, sure, but it's much easier to grip (and much harder to get out of my pocket...), sits on surfaces without sliding, and doesn't look too bad. The phone looks sexier naked, of course, but it's not too bad.

Phew! Glad it didn't kill anything. If it were me I would have had to rush to the hospital for an immediate heart transplant.

Yeah, I thought I might need one at first. I heard it hit and looked up and my son and wife were just looking at me in fright. I started to boil but his face made me realize it's just a phone. He didn't mean to do it. I am happy it is fine though.
When I heard it, I knew what it was immediately. It made three distinctive thumps as it hit and bounced twice. I just can't believe it didn't even leave a mark.

Glad to hear that the phones are ok!
Will definitely be careful with mine since I may just carry it butt naked with a G1 pouch case when not in use. I like the black rubber cases but not the friction - taking it out of the front pocket...
lol I dropped mine on gravel and got scared it sounded so loud and thought I had broken my new G2, when I picked it up to look for the damage I was so surprised only a tiny dent, no scratches no scrapes, very very well built
I had a coworker ask me about the phone, so when i said she could look at it, she slid the phone (no case on it) battery side down across the metal table it was on. i heard the metal on metal scrape and to say i was going to go ape **** would be putting it mildly. i didn't yell or cuss her out (in my mind i did), but she got the idea from my reaction and tone in voice that wasn't a smart move. luckily she didn't scrape it. i swear people just don't understand us (geeks)

Dark "stains" of "ink" behind screen?

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. Last night I turned on my phone to find what looks like blotches of ink stains or oil behind the screen. Touch screen works just fine and I can see the entire display. It just looks like the lcd is floating just above these "stains" or whatever they are. If I press on the back of the phone at the battery cover, the stains move a little. Very strange, considering I baby my phone, have never dropped it or gotten it wet.
T-Mobile is sending a replacement, but I'd still like to know what happened and if I can fix it.
This used to happen on the original droids and on my Droid incredible. It is oil. Not really anything you can do about it. Never really found out what causes it... but I know alot of fingers were pointed at heat.
Glad they are sending a replacement.

Thanks. So strange. It definitely looks like oil. But the phone has never been exposed to heat. One minute it was fine, the next all oily. Hmm.
Thats actually the liquid crystals form the LCD leaking out and should falls under warranty, if you want it replaced. It doesn't happen often but occurs when the seal along the edges of the panels fails from basic use then LC oozes out from pressure.

Arrrgghh I've scratched it. ALREADY.. :( (the paintwork)

Any tips on touching up the chrome paint work. Dropped it getting out of the car. Scuffed the corners.
Had ordered the cover but hadn't arrived yet. Highly recommend some sort of cover before taking this beauti out.

i hate you
Wrong screen protector and it's on upside down.
of course its upsidedown? better some old screen protector than non.
Any one tips on touching up the plastic chrome edging.
Ouch. Looks like you have the wrong sized screen protector on - it looks the same as mine. Came with my Case-Mate, not sure why they provided the wrong protector. Maybe they hadn't produced the right ones yet and and thought the wrong size was better than nothing.
That my worst fear ..ouch
Too bad the didn't get rid of the crome and go all black like on the nexus s
I did this to my vibrant...did u get at store? If so just swap it. Make something up like randomly rebooting

same here. got it with the casemate. Useless screen protector anyway. need something that resists fingerprints.

get a black (not translucent) silicone case, and you are all set.
I did the same thing like second week I had my AT&T Captivate, did not bother me much. No phone is gonna stay scar-free forever
i just want to say:
O dear think its time to use my case

well if you want guys who have lots of paints, and who might be able to cover it, then try looking for one of them game workshop places, they have loads of paints in there and other stuff, I dropped a hd cam year ago and I passed by one of these shops and guy in there found a paint to cover it perfect.....just a thought
pray that the phone starts making awful noises and constantly reboots itself.
Then you have a reason to take it to Samsung repair centre.
The warranty i believe is 2years.
I ordered my cases from 2 ebay Us sellers and still haven't received them. Sad my phone from OK arrived first.

weird scuff or something under glass?

I've noticed 4 distinct 'scuffs' or 'stains' that appear to be under my glass. I don't know how else to describe them. I didn't notice them when I first got the phone, but you can only see them at a good angle where there's no glare, so the may have always been there. Now I can't *not* notice them. I'll try to post a picture tonight, it's a bit hard to photograph. I think if someone has it they would know what I'm talking about...
Does it kind of look like a gel substance underneath the glass?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Hmmm maybe.. if I took a micro-drop of gel or glue and pressed it.... i'll try to post a pic later tonight.
its the oleophobic coating peeling off i think
Okay here are two pics of two of these things. I have four of them. I scratch and rub them and nothing, as if they are just beneath the surface...
From what I'm seeing it just looks like a scuff or scratch. I had a palm pixie before and it had the same markings on it.. Idk what it is.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I had something similar on my previous Nexus S. I think it's made from steam settling under glass.
I am on my second handset (Sprint) San Antonio, TX and both have had screen issues... I did notice something quite similar to your issue on my current handset but mine resides closer to the ear piece and camera... besides that I'm also experiencing the keyboard ghosting issue very visible when I open my notification menu.... I'm kinda hesitant to get a replacement since thus far my screens issues have only doubled ...

He is correct, mine is doing the same thing. Look at it this way, at least the top of your screen isn't separating, mine flexes'and'goes up and down under minimal pressure and makes all kinds of noise, its weird.

I think this seems to be the most likely scenario from my google research and comparison of other pics. Ugh. Hopefully it won't get worse. What's the replacement/repair policy? Call Samsung or take it to Best Buy ? It's been over 30 days.
Definitely not scuff marks, I keep the thing in a sock and treat it like gold.
I am currently on hold waiting for a rep at Samsung.....it has been 1 hour and 45 minutes and I have not talked to anyone... so if calling Samsung is what you opt to do ... get yourself a samwich and a six pack before hand!!
So I finally got through to a rep.... and they said...
JK... I gave up after 5 hour hold.(seriously) ...and decided the issue was minimal at this point

I have similar problems, except it'll only show if I breath moist air on to it. If you cover it up with a decent screen protector, it should go away unless the mark is really deep.
