I found this device. It is a full PC with an ARM Brodcome 700MHz CPU, 128 or 256 MB of ram and it is going to cost 25/35$. It is designed to run Linux (Debia,Arch,Fedora and more)
I was just wondering if it is possible to run Android on it. The possibilities are endless.

Yes this is one way to go an inexpensive hand made tablet although it would cost more then 60$
If you give 35$ for the Pi and then another 15-20$ for the sd card you allready have 50-55$ and unfortunately the touch screen without multi touch costs over 80$ .If you know anywhere to buy cheaper please inform me .

I just ordered a replacement screen for my Dell streak that was $35. It's a great little screen with responsive touch. Not sure how to connect it to VGA or hdmi or whatever though...
Been following this for a long time, and looks like a great idea! Nice idea about putting android on it, but linux would be cool too!

I'm going to start trying to get this running as a Google TV as soon as I get one. This is a perfect platform for it.

I would like to see android for this little board, who needs touch if you plan to use it on a tv or larg format display. Just give me an android build that can use a mouse with, like android x68. I have seen a youtube vid of android x86 used on netbooks. I just think that would be great; too bad we cant get them retail yet but we will have it soon, then i hope to see lots of development for this great toy.

looks like they have a release date of February 20th.
Reading on the Raspberry Pi website it has been revealed that in can be run on 4 X AA Batteries, not really sure how long it would last though.
Also with regards to the small touchscreen, they're not as exspensive as you would imagine, I have already purched a controller for an LCD Screen I salvaged from an old P4 Prescott Laptop, encased them both in a Pine frame and have a very cheap 15.6" LCD PC Monitor.

And finally on the original topic of porting Android onto the raspberry Pi you can't use Android-x86 as the Broadcomm chip doesn't support the X86 Architecture - help is at hand though as they have released a datasheet to help people port software onto the Pi.

For those of you who don't know about these new head units. It is the first headunit that is running an Android based operating system that is compatible with MirrorLink.
I can't post a link but if you google "mobile electronics magizine xav-601bt" you can find a lot of info on it.
I am curious what people are going to do with these once it is rooted, just think of the possibilities!
What are the chances we can get MirrorLink to work on all android based devices? So far it looks to only be planned for new phones but I am sure that we could change that.
Nobody else thinks this is amazing? You now can install an android based computer/audio/video in your car that you can mirror your phone's interface on!! Literally your car can now do everything your phone does, something people have wanted to do years.
I'm doing some research on the XAV-601BT right now. Saw you posted some info on another car audio site and I would like to know what you think of the unit. Such as: what apps would currently integrate an xperia pro freshly updated to android 4.** and are there any known issues with particular devices or configurations? Any mod sites messing around with getting rid of the bugs yet, safety nannies or performance wise? I can't find much besides chatter yet.

I think you don't have the right phone for it.. only Nokia and the new Samsung Galaxy S3 support Mirror Link.
I've read somewhere that Mirror Link is hardware based, but maybe it's the same technology as MHL.
Thanks for the reply. I read that the 2012 Xperias would be MirrorLink capable too. I came across conflicting information on it being implementable for smartphones that had output capabilities of uUSB and HDMI like my Xperia pro. If a phone can support RealVNP I think it should work but I'm just learning about this technology. I've got some research to do on this before I pull the trigger because I want/need qwerty with my hand size and I don't see anything similar to the pro in the pipeline that would come factory capable with MirrorLink.
Anybody know for sure what it would take to run MirrorLink on a phone like the 2011 Xperia pro?

He is right about the S3 and nokia phones being the first supported. Windows phones and other phones are expected in the future but there is little information available. I originally heard that mirrorlink was a hardware solution but now I believe it is software. There is a good chance that it could be ported but it is going to be hard to tell until the S3 launches and some people on here start playing with it. I also hope they make an area for the XAV-601BT and XAV-701HD on this site so people can start focusing on rooting the unit as it is Android bassed.
I have used the unit and even without the mirrorlink it is an amazing unit. It literally does everything I could want in a double din head unit.
I currently have the xav-601bt i picked up from my audio shop yesterday. I also have a htc sense and the unit will only display unsuported device. Speaking with the sony west coast rep today, I was informed that there will be rollouts for the mirror link. It seems that it will be an app you can download from the play store.
The rollouts are expected to be every 60 days, but as for what phones are capable of running the mirror link protocol remains a mystery.
I offered my phone to be tested for there software but he will have to check with his higher ups about that. I am hoping that it will soon be available for download and one of the developers that crack it to work with other phones, like the netflix and hulu apps.
I am still waiting on information from the east coast rep on this as well. If I get anymore information I'll be sure to post it here.

I have this unit as well and have had it since late May. It is actually pretty responsive(for a touchscreen head unit) and boots up fast. I am coming from a x930BT which was horrible in both of these areas. The having to press more than once is more related to how accurate you need to be to hit what the unit considers the button. It is small area that accepts the input for that button, hopefully they address this in a FW update.
As for the Sun question - pretty bad, but my car has a bad location for the radio that doesn't help the problem any. The sun beats directly on the screen and it is completely washed out.

Hmm the sun problem is not a good thing, a lot of units have problems with that and I hoped that a big company as Sony wouldn't have this problem.
I've had this unit for a few days so far and love it. I'm order the steering wheel control adapter today. It has a matte finish on the screen and that helps the glare, I can see the screen just fine.

Hi Guys just asking for a bit of an update - im in the uk so the bigger 701hd isnt out yet, i was looking at the Alpine ICS x-8 which also supports mirror link - there is a demo out on youtube which shows it working with the Galaxy S2! Do you guys think this would work with the S3?

This head unit does not actually run Android, so there's nothing to root. It uses MirrorLink to mirror your phone's display on the head unit. You'll have to wait a few months for Clarion's double din Android head unit to release to have Android running natively on your head unit. There are some cheap no-name head units out there right now running Android, but they're poor quality and I don't think any of them are even running Gingerbread.

I just installed this unit in my car - the Open source license page on the unit shows a lot of .apk files and also reference AOSP, and Linux 2.6.x licenses - so it is Linux
The mirror link support looks like it comes from tmlibs.so - which they published on their support site (Trying to find the links - I downloaded what they published for opensource -

Support for Europe was going to be available on July 20 2012.
But, Support for Europe will be delayed to August 31 2012, because of software development has been delayed.

I read an article yesterday that said Joe Britt, head of [email protected], has left Google and that the ADT-1 reference platform given out at google i/o this year may never land as a Google hardware product....

Everyone is misinterpreting the recent article at Android Police. They should have been more clear in their article to say the ADT-1 was once supposed to be a Nexus Android TV device. It fell through because some people left. That basically sums it up. Android TV isn't going away before it even launches.
I'd also take all rumors with a grain of salt. Every other day the rumors change the specs on what the Nexus 6 will be.
I have Rokus and a FireTV. Comparing the two, there are aspects of each that I like better than the other. I see the FireTV as having the potential to be vastly superior to Roku in the long term, and with this in mind I see Android TV as being in a position to jump out in front from the start if done right. I'm not holding my breath, and I'm satisfied with my current setup, but at the same time I'm looking forward to the real life hands on reviews when Android TV boxes start shipping.
Doom and gloom rumors aside, I'm pretty confident Android TV boxes are going to be released. ADT-1 reference boxes have been shipped to manufacturers and devs. ADTV versions of apps are being developed (made remote/big screen friendly), hardware manufacturers are moving forward with both the set-top-boxs and integrated into TVs. All Google needs to do is release hardware specs for compatibility (which they have done), the SDK (which they have done), and the OS (Android L). I don't care if Google never releases their own brand of Nexus TV. It's just like Android phones and tablets, let them all compete with each other to see who comes out with the best setup. Google just needs to do what they do best, the OS.
I want to source an Android smart watch from China for a project am working on. I want to change the menu interface it comes with and replace with a custom interface specific for my purpose (means no custom control to intended audience).

Please note: to date no Chinese Android watches are IP67, even the ones that provide proof of IP certification, I've learned that the hard way

I'm sure you have experience dealing with Chinese sellers, but if you don't . .. . be extremely careful, even using Paypal, trust no one!

I have a chicken-egg question ... Which came first - AK-S5 or Z01? Which of these (or among numerous others on Alibaba) is "original" (designed first)? If there is no traceback and everyone is using the same reference design, as long as it works as intended, does it matter? I did get this supplier to show me the watch on skype video (though it doesn't prove anything).
My main question is - if the supplier really has a "fully working version" of S5 or Z01, and is ready to supply - they also say they will do ODM - any experience on their skills to make a custom ROM and change the menu interface to my needs? If not, anyone here willing to build the ROM and interface (paid)?

I started looking into smartwatches on XDA from Mar 2014, so my history before then is limited. For me it started with the Omate TrueSmart, their Kickstarter campaign that promised it all and delivered a lie. I could be wrong, but Omate made the watch first (x201) and the rest copied (or someShenzhen firm made it first and Omate copied ) @pizzaman77 - knows the full history of Omate clones x201. But yes, now it does not matter as long as it works.
As for the development, you might get lucky and find that someone is already doing what you want or similar on the Omate forum - search on the Android development threads. I'm not a dev, so I don't if the Chineses sellers have the skills, doubt it. But the Devs on XDA will have. Yes I'd stick with Android, lots of resources available, gives more flexibility. I don't think Nucleus OS is a viable option yet, it would be too expensive.
I take it SIM is a requirement too? I'll look around, the IP67 is not available yet, maybe the Ironman 3rd generation might be IP67, but the company (Unova) is full of liars, I was ripped off with the 2nd generation, I proved it's not IP67. Other then the IP67 the rest might be available, you'll need to search for it on AliExpress.

Yes, with 2G. 3G really not needed but if it comes with it, cool. Couldn't find any with android and heart rate on back side, keeping IP67 on the side.
Am currently in Boston (originally from India).

Looks like Android Wear needs a compatible Android phone for it to work.
So, I'll stick with just Android.
General rules with Chinese Android smartwatches
Broken firmware
Major security holes
Little to no official support (this includes the phone side app)
English (or any other language other than Chinese) for the phone app is very rare
Incomplete source code (when you can even get it) that is a generic build pulled from a phone
Inconsistent battery life due to broken firmware
IP67 is more like IP54 if lucky
Poor build quality and QC by western standards
Not Lokifish supported (I've walked away from the industry as a whole until they get their collective heads out of their butts)
kuronosan's time is limited so fixes may be slow
Depending on your needs and goals. Talk to Ingenic. The HW is a little slow on the Newton (SmartQ Z uses it), not sure about the Newton 2. Either way they have source (Linux, Android, etc). The package is small enough that you could design and build a smartwatch that's about the same size as a real watch, but the display will need a new "crystal" to pull it off nicely. Find a compatible round display, and you should be able to use off the shelf watch cases with minor modifications giving you a 200m diver's smartwatch if you do it right.
*Side note
Even with a 1/2 million buy in for 3000 units we designed ourselves, Umeox still would not have provided source code, and little to no support. That's what the Chinese ODM's are like. kuronosan can verify this.

I've just started working with smartwatches, but I'm happy to help however I can. I'll be attempting some work on the s8, and I know my way around Android pretty well.

The most common question asked here is "what should I do with my pi?"
This is a solution to that question. You can now get everything you need to complete the projects we all bought our pi's for.
What I have done is started a subscription box business, with the intention of providing a monthly project for your raspberry pi's. I have tried to pick projects that offer the best combination of improving your tech skills and being something you will use more than once.
I would like to think I have an above average grasp of all aspects of technology and I was worried that I would pick projects that would not be able to be completed by someone with a novice skill level or even someone who has never seen a raspberry pi before.
To make sure that was not the issue. I asked my 11-year-old daughter to help me. This is an average 11-year-old, she does have her own phone, tablet, and laptop. But let's be honest here she spends all her time talking to friends or watching kids open toys on youtube. She is a good student at a small public school. She knows dad makes money working with computers and that’s about it.
I told her I had a headache and asked her to help me. We sat down at the kitchen table with her laptop and the parts I have picked out for the first subscription box. I had her navigate to "https://github.com/alexa/alexa-avs-sample-app/wiki/Raspberry-Pi" and we just walked through each step. I don’t think she noticed that it took almost 2 hours to complete it. When we were done she wanted to keep it in her room. That was about a week ago and every once in a while I can hear her asking Alexa a math problem or something similar.
Sure I was right there beside her to answer any questions or nudge her in the right direction. I think it is worth noting that she had an excellent guide to follow, but we all know that every project most of us want to do at this point is well documented. The issue we have is either lacking the parts to do a project or we have trouble deciding which one we want to do.
A few of the projects I want to add to the coming month's boxes would be things like retropie, a mini magic mirror for the desk, a weather station, some kind of home automation, a time-lapse camera. Functional things like that. Things all ages groups would enjoy.
I don’t want you all to think that I am just getting cheap parts from china and sending them out with a high price tag. What I have done is searched amazon for the parts needed for each project, the first months is the Alexa pi so we needed an SD card. I found some Sandisk 16gb class 10's. we needed a USB microphone. I wouldn’t want the one that is advertised on the GitHub link above due to it not having a cable, so I found a flexible one that would stay where I pointed it at. The last thing we needed was a speaker with a headphone cable, so I got an external speaker designed for a ham radio that had noise canceling built in because why not?
I made sure all of these were 4-star reviews or higher and I also went through all of the comments till I seen that each product I picked was going to work with raspberry pi without issue. Then once I received them I plugged them into all of my pi's to make sure they worked across the raspberry pi family.
While I am positive that most any person out there could come up with some fancy marketing and pretty boxes. I am not that creative. I am offering my passion as a raspberry pi enthusiast. I would not put anything in the boxes that I wouldn’t use myself. I don’t like buying cheap things I am more of a buy it for life type of guy. I stay current on the new uses for raspberry pi and I will always make sure that whatever the project is that month that the instructions are clear enough for anyone capable of reading English to follow.
The price of the box itself is $50.00 per month.
This is the only thing that I am not 100% sure of but I wanted to be prepared for those of us from the UK and other countries. I couldn't figure out a good way of doing the shipping for just you on crate joy's website. I decided a flat rate of $50.00 would guarantee regardless of total weight that I could ship oversea's. I am not happy about this and it will change as soon as I can find a way to handle it properly with cratejoy.
