Need help deciding - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need help with a few issues here before buying a tablet.
here are my issues with with the nexus 10
1.If i bought one now is it less likely to have really bad light bleed? extreme light bleed I know most tablets have some. Talking about like the yellow light bleed or the one all over the edges.
2.The charging if slow is fine but I watch alot of videos and play alot of games, is the pogo worth it? I've looked and can't find the answer to the question of "does the battery still drain while using the pogo while playing games or watching videos?"
3.Random reboots, dealt with it before but don't wanna drop 500 bucks and then after my return period be dealing with random reboots....any word from google or a fix here? Would using a custom rom help that?
4.Don't really have a store here that I can go to to play with it how is the upscaling on apps that dont have the app set up right? And do you think it will get better?
The other tablet that I'm looking at after discounting the TF700 cause the 1gb of ram bothers me for 500 dollars is the note 10.1
1.The resolution is a big factor seeing how my phone has a higher one then it and again 450 dollars? Kinda a buzz kill.
2.Stylus doesn't really matter I had a note 1 phone and never used it really.
3.I have a 16gb sd card as well so it would be 32gb vs 32gb.
4.The note is the closet thing to the nexus 10 without losing the extra ram (more future proofing then not) but if you know of others other than the TF700 that I might like let me know
In the end I would like to hear from some users on the nexus 10 issues mainly the charging and the light bleed. First tablet but long time flasher/custom rom user on android.

I decided to return my nexus 10 yesterday mainly due to random reboots and screen. I have never bought an electronic device that reboots so many times by itself on the first week. I have some light bleed but it is reasonable consider the size of the screen. What I have problem with is it started to have vertical streaks when I scroll up and down then disappear when I use it in portrait mode.
Now to be fair, please only take what I experienced with a grain of salt as you might have a better experience than me. I still think Nexus 10 is a great tablet and has potential but until Google figures out all these kinks, I won't drop $500 to become their QA person.

[Q] Buyer's Remorse... And I don't even have it yet!

Well, I've managed to find one and ordered a 32GB version. It should be arriving on Monday.
However, from all the negative 3.1-related threads I'm kind of regretting it now. Talk of battery drains, speaker issues, lags, random reboots, worse wifi, etc. is making me wish I'd held off or gone for something else (Acer Iconia?)
Please someone tell me that in the grand scheme of things, this is actually a bloody decent device!
Aside from a small bit of light leak mine is all good. What you're experiencing is people that aren't satisfied will be more likely to speak up than people who are satisfied with the devices. These issues are things that have happened to certain users but its not like your device will automatically present all these symptoms. In the grand scheme of things this is a really nice device. If you are looking for something where everything is perfect and there are no issues, you might have to wait a while longer until honeycomb matures a bit more and the 2nd Gen of android tabs come out (i don't really count gb tabs as officially supported android tabs)

While I can't speak for anyone else I bought mine sight unseen and could not be happier.
I'm rooted on 3.1 and overclocked and while kernel is a little rough I am loving it. Only gonna get better. Besides, stock kernel is an option.
Light bleed...not an issue for me. (Haven't noticed so I don't care)
Random reboots. May have happened overnight but I haven't seen any.
I haven't killed my battery yet. Lowest I've gotten was last night to 23% but I was flashing **** like crazy. (No dock btw)
Lots of storage.
Videos play great now.
Speakers are fine to me. (They make it so I can easily hear what I want to hear)
Screen is gorgeous.
Kills the zoom as far as I can tell.
I am happy and with all the development going on I am only going to get happier.

No battery drains, speaker issues, or wifi problems with mine. Have had it randomly reboot on me once though. And I've seen the Xoom lag way worse. Overall, this is the best tablet currently available. I wouldn't touch an Acer product with a 10 yard stick.
Stick with 3.0 if you don't like all the problems with 3.1. Though, I'm using it and am only bothered by the browser.
I just ordered mine too and don't yet have it. I had what you are having and even cancelled the order at one point in favor of the a500. After cancelling, I did a pretty thorough look at the Acer a500. Even though it has better speakers, a USB 2.0 port, and vibrate, it's downsides are too much to take.
I don't want something that heavy or bulky. It has known GPS problems. The battery life is pretty mediocre when compared to the Transformer. And, currently anyway, the development for this tablet is much more promising.
Don't worry about the bleed issues. That seems to be the biggest one people complain about. Just keep exchanging until you get one with minimal bleeding.
It is a bloody fantastic machine! Love it, it has been used pretty much non-stop since the 3 of May!
Excellent piece of hardware - I only got the 16GB version, so plan is to purchase a good microSDHC card soon - 32GB version.
I am running on the latest version (3.1) and I could not be happier. Got the dock a week ago and I amazed on how much I use it. Often combo-use the touch screen and keyboard for interactions with the transformer.
I game, surf, read, watch movies and some hobby software development. Plan is to soon be able to actually develop on it as well
I know the experience migth vary, but for me, this piece of wonderful wholesome goodness could not be better, unless someone covered it in batter and deep fried it!
- Authored on my transformer
The fact that you can sell it technically used for the price of new must mean that there are around 10,000 people a month that like theirs.

Aside from a small amount of light bleed, that is only noticeable if you are sitting in the dark with the screen ramped up to maximum brightness, I haven't had any problems with my mine. It's a great bit of kit and the dock takes it to a completely different level. No regrets at all about buying mine,

I don't need a signature.
16 hours off the charger and I'm at 52%. Granted, a good deal of that has been idle, I haven't played with it for 16 hours straight, but that is in line with what I expect from a tablet -- mess with it some, lay it down for hours, and pick it up again later with a decent amount of juice left. Mine creaks a bit in the upper right corner, and I notice one small spot of light bleed under perfectly dark conditions, but otherwise, I'm glad I bought it. Won't find a better value anywhere else.
Thanks for the feedback
Wow, filled up a page in less than an hour!
Thanks guys. It IS good to hear the other side of the coin, and I completely get the "self selection bias" point.
I have less remorse than I did an hour ago, so thank you everyone.
Now I'm looking forward to it arriving again
I am thrilled with the TF!!! And let me just say that I am very hard to please when it comes to electronics.
I had the G-Slate and the TF whips it, hands down.
The Acer tab is alright, but it is wayyy too bulky and still not quite as good as the TF IMO.
I am using 3.1 and although it is not as fast as 3.0 when I had it overclocked it still works fine. I haven't tried the 3.1 oc kernel that got posted today yet.

Yeah only two things to really be concerned about is the light bleed, if it's massive, and battery life after 3.1.
For the $400 price, the IPS display, and all other tablets sucking, I guess I'm happy with the Transformer. But I got a few problems.
My first transformer had a defective screen that was separated from the glass making the back light visible on one side and causing the glass to bend.
I'm on my second Transformer now. It's got back light bleeding, which doesn't bother me too much. But it's also got a quarter inch circle on the screen that is brighter than the rest of the screen. Looks like something is wrong with the panel there.
So now I got to return a second Transformer. And this is such a pain because I got to time it right with when they have something in inventory or just be without a the tablet for a while like last time.
There are other build quality issues. The back plastic edges are not flush with the metal bezel, some corners are popped up a little.
And the speaker volume is not balance (fearing this might be hardware problem too since its still not fixed from the 3.1 update).
I was having some performance issues and found I had to reboot the tablet often to refresh the performance. Then I started removing some applications. After removing TweetCaster Pro, suddenly the performance improved significantly.
I seem to get a lot more keyboard lag (ASUS or Android keyboard) with the stock browser after the 3.1 update. It's a little disappointing.
I've got gripes. But I think I'll be keeping the Transformer (though definitely need to go through another exchange). The A500 doesn't have an IPS display and is very heavy. And I suspect it'll have it's share of software problems too. Same thing for the Xoom. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has it's own quality build issues (it's glass likes to pop out of the bezel like the Transformer's back side is doing on mine) and it's lack of micro SD is a huge disappointment.
The state of Android tablets is still in a rather sad state. But we are still kinda early adopters and it's the price we pay.
PS. Almost forgot to mention, the GPS on my Transformer doesn't work at all. Though this really doesn't bother me since I don't use it anyway.
Yikes! I swear I think there are just bad batches out there, that can be the only explanation of these wild swings in quality. I guess the OP needs to cross his fingers and hope he gets one of the good ones.

THIS so much.
I am REALLY surprised with how much damn COMPLAINING there is across these boards. My unit came perfect apart from a small bit of light bleed at the bottom.
And best of all? 3.1 DOUBLED the functionality of the tablet. I was super happy with it when I got it, and then the update made it feel like a new tablet.
Besides the light bleed, my only problem with it is that it doesn't seem to do 1080p output through the miniHDMI jack.
Other than that, it's perfect and one of the best technology purchases I have ever made.
TBH, when I purchased mine I read all the complaining about problems and also was worried. But when I opened it, plugged it in, and used it, I was blown away and all my worries were destroyed.
Seriously, it's an amazing product that benefits even more by the dock and by Honeycomb 3.1. Even if new tablets with better hardware come out, this tablet is going to retain its uniqueness and power through the ever-increasing capabilities of Honeycomb (and eventually Ice Cream Sandwich!) and because of its fantastic Dock.
EDIT: Please don't get me wrong, by "complaining" I don't mean that people are whining about illegitimate problems. Problems DO exist, but it's as the person I quoted said: it's just biased because all the people without problems are enjoying their tablets and not looking for solutions on this forum.
The only "problem" that I feel IS complaining is people who whine about how their tablets "creak". It's like the most minor problem of anything, and yet there are people who have returned their tablets and won't buy another one just because their first one makes a small creak sound when you press on it.
Remember this device is on the edge of tech. New product. Growing pains in manufacturing, etc. There will be returns.
But I can tell you that I have been on the edge of tech since before the IBM PC. And I have never had a "toy" that brought such amazement and sheer joy. Run google body on it (while you have two email accounts updating and google voice updating while you have a map with the latest earthquakes updating while you have a maps window open while you have conversion software to convert anything to anything and gps navigation at your fingertips with Copilot Live) and prepare to be amazed. All while listening to music.
I have no problems others than the sound is not very good. I think it will get better with updates; there are $25 solutions to this problem.

I had two with bleed and speaker balance issues. one experience the frame separation too and it got worse the longer I had it. for me the bleed was noticeable even at lowest brightness sine I read books with black bg and red text. one had way more bleed than the other.
my third try is coming on Tuesday. I've decided to give up using the tf as an ebook reader and keep it limited to comics or reading in daylight.
as for the crappy speakers, sound quality and balance issues, ive just decided that for what it offers at the price its good enough. plus i have my archos 101 as back up. crappier build and screen but better av playback quality.
the tf is a great device, if that weren't true I wouldn't give it three tries. I just really wish the qc was better.
I've had mine since April 28th and it's fine. No problems to speak of except minor light bleed, which doesn't bother me at all. 3.1 even improved my battery performance, so I'm kind of surprised to hear about the other issues here. Enjoy your TF and post your thoughts after you receive.

[Q] Is the nexus 7 really worth buying despite its flaws ??

Despite all the flaws (i think there are many including the screen lift dead pixel unresponsive touch screen)is it worth buying ? Am getting it from usa thru my friend to india but what if i have a problem with the device ? Cant replace it ! I fear that alot Pls help me in deciding to get one or not !
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770919
I've read reviews that the device had issues with the screen lifting. I've had a couple tablets, nook color, nook tablet, kindle fire and I've tested out the new kindle fire HD. Out of all of them I LOVE the nexus 7 and none can touch the nexus 7 imo. I bought one last week and I haven't had any problems. Im sure other members will chime in about there opinions. I would buy it if i were you. I hope my comment helps

Buy it. Test it in the shop. If not good ask for refund....
I love mine and I live in Europe. Bought in usa....
I don't think the newer models have as many issues, my c80 is great and to me this device just keeps getting better, the latest update is also working great on my end so I recommend it highly, its really a steal at the price too

I love my Nexus 7. It is amazing! It is totally worth it. The unresponsive touch screen is a software issue, which will probably be fixed. I just got a new update, and it seems to be working well so far. If it happens, you just turn the screen off and then back on. (Just sleep mode) I have had no hardware issues with mine, and I love it. It is totally worth it. Go Google!
Asus/Google Nexus 7
CPU: Nvidia Tegra 3 w/ 4 Cores + 1 Low Power Core @ 1.2 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce w/ 12 Cores @ 416 MHz
RAM: 1 GB of DDR3 RAM
ROM: Nexus 7 4.1.1 JRO03D Stock ROM (Rooted)
Kernel: Stock
I've had mine almost a month now and I haven't seen any flaws. I've been beyond happy with mine. No screen lifting, no wonky display, nothing. Buy one.
The N7 I'm getting is a C80, chances of an issue?
Nexus 7 won the Gadget and Tablet of the year. Flaws you are mentioning are minor and you can always swap Nexus 7 with a new one if it's faulty. There is no other 7'' tablet out there which is as powerful as N7. You will love every bit of it....

My Nexus 7 doesn't have any issues. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I would just buy it and hope you get one without any issues.
hmm - maybe i would not buy it again...
Display calibration is very bad (washed out colors, bad gamma) -> http://www.displaymate.com/Tablet_7inch_ShootOut_1.htm
Even the cheaper Amazon Kindle Fire HD has a better display!
Android 4.1.2 unfortunately is still a little bit laggy compared to iOS 6 or Windows Phone 7.5.
Only stock-launcher runs pretty smooth - Apps (even chrome) are laggy and have input-lag...
Pixel density is not so good too - you can see pixels if your eyes are nearer than 40cm - that´s much better on iPad 3 (and probably iPad mini).
This make fonts look a little bit blurry ...
The speaker sounds a little bit tinny too (also better on ipad).
If the display would be better and android would run smoother (it´s a shame with that good cpu/gpu) it would be a very great gadget!
Overall the iPad 3 (and probably iPad mini) is much more perfect. If you are looking only for a cheap device you will maybe satisfied with the N7.
Keep in mind that this site is where people who have problems go to resolve them and/or rant about them, it's definitely not a random sampling. And threads stick around forever, so you can still read about old problems from right when the N7 first came out... the circuit-board has been rev'd, what, 2-3 times since then? And there are a couple of people who seem to have limitless time to stir up the hornet's nest and rally others to their cause (which is, apparently in one notable case, complete misery)... again, not representative of the vast numbers of people who have had zero problems with the N7. That's the thing about confirmation bias... very few people who are having no problems pop by to say "I am having no problems" (we're too busy using the thing to bother). And now we have threads where we are being told that people who have non-problematic N7's just 'think' they have no problems, but they are really just too stupid to notice them... yeah. So...
My wife bought a Nook, then I bought a Kindle. Then the N7 came out, and after playing with it for a couple of days I sent the Kindle back... a bit prematurely, because my wife then sent back her Nook and got a Kindle. All other things being equal, this probably could have been predicted - I need an Android tablet that I can hack to my heart's content, and she needs a vector for the easy procurement and consumption of ebooks, MP3s, and movies. But having tried all three of those devices, I found that none of them was particularly flawed compared to the others... they all had minor problems, most of which were resolved or worked around with a google search; we did have to send the first Nook back when every 8th row of pixels started flickering on and off, but the replacement was fine in that regard... it just didn't fit our usage needs as well as the others.
At this point, if I was still in the market for a tablet the only thing that would keep me from buying a Nexus 7 is the rumored larger-storage version or even the 10" version (though really I find that the 7" tablets have cut down on how much I use both my iphone and my laptop, so the 7" format seems perfect to me. 32GB of storage would be nice though.)

[Q] Should I buy a Nexus 10?

I'm in the market for a tablet, and everything about this thing makes me want it... Spec wise, anyway.
Reading about tons of issues with it, mostly with light bleed, I'm wondering if i should pass this one up.
What would you do, after actually owning one? Any regrets? What way would you like to have gone instead?
I would buy another one in a heartbeat. Love it. The people complaining about light bleed and such are just (literally) looking for anything to complain about.
It's a great device. No regrets.

The temperature throttling is the biggest issue (if not really the only thing) that was bugging me for the longest time. In short, you'd have to practically sit in a freezer or something to play any demanding games, and even then this doesn't guarantee that the tablet won't throttle due to wattage consumption (in other words, you cannot just sit permanently at the advertised 1.7GHz CPU speed). Games like NFS:MW would slideshow almost at times because of this.
So far, it seems to be less of an issue on 4.2.2 and 4.2.1 custom ROM's, but still present to an extent.
This seems the best bet for me. I just don't want to go through what seems hell and back just to get a replacement if the one i order is defective like so many seem to be. I hate to say that if i want reliability i would have to get an iPad but screwww that.
I'd mostly be using the tablet for netflix, youtube, and web browsing, so as long as i don't have any issue with video playback i shouldn't have a problem getting what i need out of it.
I've changed my mind back and forth more than five times about which tablet to get and this one never leaves the corner of my eye. I need some reassurance!
Since you're not using it for seriously heavy gaming, go for it. It's still your best bet.
About light bleed, I can't notice it in mine unless I crank it up to 90% brightness in a dark room. Not really that much of an issue tbh.
Doesn't warranty cover severe light bleeds?

Does that seem to happen with anyone else, being at 90% brightness? If so, i keep my screens at around 30% to keep my eyes from straining. Maybe out won't be a big issue for me
I play shadow gun on it for hours , and only sometimes in hours , does it throttle down, I put down the tablet for a while get something to drink and get back on gaming . Reading and web browsing are an absolute charm. Flipboard is amazing. Dont worry about the Nexus 10 octa , it would probably be released by June , so the tablet is the most powerful one in the market for atleast six months. and the beautiful thing is apps will be optimised for A15s once that comes out , so its a win win for us users.
Tegra 4 is only available after Q4 2012.
Well i ordered one. Crossing my fingers! Thanks everyone

Cheers! You won't regret it. Let us know of your experience with Gnex. :good:
I used several samsung 7 inch before this one as well as several android smart phones. Is the n10 problem free? No, but I grab it before I reach for any of my other devices. I love it and when they fix the few bugs, I will love it even more.
Someone would have to come up with something pretty amazing to make me buy it over a nexus (no microsoft, not talking to you)

[Q] Nexus 10 arrives Friday! Questions from a Techie

Hey all! You've probably seen me posting around here before. My Nexus 10 is arriving Friday to a postal shop, and I'm picking it up this coming weekend! I'm stoked. I sold my old ASUS Transformer TF300T for this thing. I couldn't stand the poor I/O; it was sad that my Galaxy Nexus was outpacing it, even on CyanogenMod 10.1.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: I live in Canada. I can't go to Wal-Mart and pickup one of these things to play with - I'm only relying on online reviews and the threads here on XDA and elsewhere.
Anyway, I am by no means an Android newbie. I originally had an ASUS Transformer TF101, and upgraded to the TF300. Soon after, I got myself a Galaxy S, then decided that I wanted the updates of Nexus (I even had CyanogenMod running on my Galaxy S - poor thing) and the fluidity/overall performance of Nexus.
Which is where I stand now. Anyway, on to the point on this thread! I have questions.
1. I know the Nexus 10's display is impressive. What I want to know is: what does everyone think of the color? I want personal opinions. Does it impact you day-to-day, is it something you notice consciously? Does it bother you all the time? Is it good, just not nearly as realistic as - say - the iPad? (I hate making that comparison, but it IS the benchmark for accuracy).
2. What kind of defects should I look for? For instance, what kind of battery life should I expect? Level of light bleed? I've read all the threads, but again - I want some personal opinions of what I should expect on an average model.
3. Should I get the Pogo connector?
4. USB OTG. How does it work? I've heard of Nexus Media Importer - does it allow me to read any format of media file? Does it give me file system access? Does it only work with music/pictures? I know I need root if I REALLY want full OTG access, but I'm not planning on it (might stay stock for quite a while).
5. Build quality. Should I expect any creaking/snapping?
6. Last question - what does everyone think of the quality of the front-facing speakers? I know they're impressive, but again I want opinions.
Thanks for reading all this, I hope I'm not too much of a bother!
Best wishes to all;
~Walkop
You have no idea what you're getting yourself into. I suggest taking the unopened Nexus 10 package, and tossing it in a fire to save yourself the trouble :good:
Jk of course, you should be very impressed with it
1. I don't notice anything wrong with the colors on my N10. I never compared my N10 to an iPad up-close, but comparing it to one in a display case at a Walmart, I didn't really notice a difference. I hear people mention the iPad has better colors, but some picture comparison done showed that the iPad had too saturated colors, and lacked "finer" details
2. Check 100% brightness on a pure black screen for any backlight bleed. Then see if you can notice that same bleed (if any) under normal conditions. On mine, I notice the bleed in one corner with max brightness and black background, but not at all under any other condition. Another defect to look for is if the back plastic "clicks", "pops", or you can press it inward. Normally, you shouldn't be able to do any of that because it would be glued/stuck to the battery. Also I think some people mentioned how there was a "hole" near one of the speaker grills.
3. I find it nice, but wish it did a bit more. If you want fast charging and want a bottom-mounted charger, and also want to reduce wear and tear on the USB port, it's worth it. The faster charging isn't "significant" though, and in some scenarios and particular tablets (some Nexus 10 have different voltage tablets I think; use more or less power), it might not charge faster than it's being used (max brightness, resource-demanding game; USB charging would be the same case but worse).
4. Haven't used USB OTG from Android itself. All I know is I can take a 8GB flash drive formatted in FAT32, and flash stuff in TWRP without issue.
5. Build quality of my tablet is fine. Just check for those common defects mentioned in #2.
6. They are very impressive. I took them for granted, until I did a sound test with a Nexus 7, Nexus 4, and Visual Land Connect tablet. Then the Nexus 10's speakers really stood out as impressive
espionage724 is pretty dead on, although I haven't had any issues with mine other then slight bleeding on each of the short sides which is only noticeable with the bleed app or on boot as a slight dull discoloration. The main thing to look for with the backlight bleed app is discoloration with the solid colors. If you see slight bleed don't worry if all the solid colors are not affected.
As far as gamma, it looks great, sure I notice its off a bit if its side by side with my wife's iPad 4, but not while I am using it. Its an amazing piece of android hardware and you will love it.
Since you asked and being a Techie myself, here's my opinion and experience on the Nexus 10.
1) The display is great. I have read a lot about the light bleed that occurs but haven't experienced it myself. Color reproduction is great. The quality of the text and also pictures/movies is stunning. It does fall short when compared with iPad 4 but not by much and will not affect your day-to-day productivity in any way. In short, it is one of the best displays in the market.
2) Defects that come to my mind - is the vibrator module. For some reason my vibrator seems very weak. But then since I haven't used / seen any other Nexus 10 apart from mine, I do not know if it is a defect. Also, I have read in a couple of communities people complain that the back of the Nexus 10 (camera region) tends to get extremely hot on minimal load. If this happens to your tablet then it may be defective.
3) The USB charging is slow but if you are like me ( i leave it overnight for charging), then you many not need the POGO connector. Anyways, a single charge for me lasts me through the day without any problems.
4) I have the USB OTG that I bought for my S3 and that works for the tab as well. I was able to connect a USB hub to it and use a keyboard and mouse simultaneously. I was also able to connect my USB flash drive to it and did not face any problems accessing the files via the USB OTG (my tablet is rooted).
5) No problems with the build quality. One thing about the build that I really liked was the rubbery feel to the back of the tablet. It easily prevents the tablet from slipping.
6) This seems to be one of the best design decisions made by Google and Samsung. The volume of the speakers is impressive and the sound reproduction is good. Seeing movies/listening to music on this tablet will be an immersive experience.
with no new nexus device announcement at Google I/O. i went ahead and ordered one too! will get mine this monday
Thanks for this topic, had many of the same questions.

Nexus 9 and Tegra based tablets are "Tablets to Avoid"

My nexus 9 recently started doing this...
Credit to Andrew Spyker
I've always had Nexus items.. First gen Nexus tablet, second, 3rd.. hell I have a nexus Q
So with this new issue I've run the gamut of Nexus 9 issues. Frisbee backplate, speed that, so you have a reference understandable to the human mind, ill describe as glacial. Charge to 100% eta. 2017. I got stuck on android 5.0.0 because.. who the hell knows. And now randomly my tablet has what I can only describe as seizures. HTC wants me to RMA it.. but you know what, I do not want to RMA it because then I'd be given another one and I would rather have the current one blow up in my face then to subject myself to the false hope of receiving a replacement and assuming, nay believing that all is well.
This is twice Nvidia has been contracted to put a processor in a Nexus and this is the second time the result has been total complete garbage. The entire Nexus9 experience has gotten me closer than I have ever been to buying an Ipad.. Google's and to an extent all Android tablet makers ability to get a tablet produced that even comes close to an Ipad in its ability to run the same way every day has been weighed and measured and found wanting.
The phones, which by all accounts are still their main focus have not suffered like the tablets so I will continue to enjoy them.
They seem to be unable to produce a table that is consistent or compelling and are thus going through the motions and just making a tablet because they have to.. So the Ipad decision is because quite frankly Apple does "going through the motions" better than Samsung/Google/HTC apparently can.
Maybe this will all change.. maybe it will not. At some point I will make the change these manufacturers will not. One thing I will not do is be suckered into a new tablet every 12 months.
I'm not happy with my Nexus 9 either. It's lacking in both hardware and software.
Hardware:
- backlight bleeding
- too heavy
- flex in the back cover
- battery life is not that great
Software:
- random reboots / crashes
- RAM bug (causing chrome tab reloads for example)
- slow performance occasionally (probably caused by the RAM bug)
- software updates were rather slow for a Nexus device, we had to wait months for 5.1.1
I don't have any hope that Android M will fix any of the software problems. The Nexus 9 has been out for almost a year and there hasn't really been much improvement since the release.
I would like to buy an iPad mini 4 (never owned an iPhone or iPad, but I think there are no good Android tablets out there), the problem is that the Nexus 9 has a bad resell value (<250€) and the iPad mini 4 costs 389€ and I really don't feel like spending that much on a tablet again considering that I haven't even had the Nexus 9 for a year.
Asus zenpad 8.0 S. ... Love mine, sold my Nexus 9 to buy it. Super thin, great screen but get the CA version
I jumped on the bandwagon and bought the 32gb N9 from Google Play in December. After a month of use I felt it was an "okay" tablet. Last month I inherited an iPad Air 1st gen. The iPad gives a much more gratifying user experience.
I feel that Google really blew it with the N9, rushing to get a tablet out and winding up with a rush product at a premium price. I will be much more reluctant to go with another Google product in the future.
I don't know but I actually love my tablet... The biggest gripe I have with it is the tabs in Chrome refreshing, but besides that the tablet works great... There is a small light bleed but nothing as bad as my G3... Sorry to hear you guys had a bad batch, but what might have helped my tablet experience is that I rooted mine and running dirty unicorn...

Same here. And my N9 is bone stock.
hardware is fine, but the drivers running it are crap. stutters, background task getting killed, refresh on tabs when browsing, touching the screen ramps up the processors (it's why the browser uses more power than the screen, each touch takes a crap-ton of power. a few updates back fixed it to 1/2 but still is too much. lowering it to 800 and it stutters, my other tablets only ramp up to 300 with no stutter)... as crappy as samsung is with support i'd have gotten a better tablet sticking with them. i've tried four different roms with the same results and was on stock/rooted for the longest with fire-ice kernel.
I assume you've done a full wipe and ruled out it being a software bug?
If the company is offering to RMA a defective unit in favor of a non-defective one and you turn them down how is that Nexus/HTC/Android/whomever's fault other than your own?
Other than the backlight bleed I don't have too many issues with my Nexus. And that was purchasing a refurb scratch/dent 32gb model from Amazon Warehouse for $290. Is it what I'd expect for a $290 tablet? Absolutely.
I'd consider an iPad Air 2, but those guys are $600 and won't sync up quite the same as all my other crap. Or alternatively the Mini 4 ($500).
Mine is on Preview M unencrypted. I really like it. My 10 is a fine tablet, as well. The 7's I've had I've never really liked.
The apple tablets I've tried seem no different to me. I've even changed my Window animation scale 1, Transition animation scale 1 and Animator duration scale 1.5 and it acts just like an apple tablet.
The freeze on OP's video is caused by an undervolt-powersave thing. It has been reported many times and only an RMA can save you from that.
The RAM deficiency is caused by the one and only Chrome that consumes a ****load of ram on any platform. It fills my G3's 3 GBs of ram in just 5 tabs.
Just use another browser.
ive got a sluggish n9, backlight bleed and a few reboots. battery life is weak...
love aspect ratio though and still think this is still a good tablet overall...
There is no way anyone that is happy with this tablet uses multiple profiles on a regular basis.
If you fresh boot and sign into one user things are ok... not horrible or super fast but ok. Sign in to an additional profile and the tablet goes to complete hell. Stutters, stalls, crashes, etc.
Really sucks because its shared between myself and my girlfriend. This has been the case since 5.0.1 through 6.0 preview 3.
People are never happy with what they have. Yes the tablet has a few issue here and there. Very little consumer grade electronics are "perfect" there will always be something that bugs you.
I like this tab, took a little tweaking, as it usually does with any device to reach the standards of a "current XDA'r".
But at the very LEAST i would disagree with this being a tab to avoid.

The incredible pessimism doesn't apply here, nor belong, either. Get off the juice.

His post is misleading and mine is not pessimism when its reality. Everyone knows this tablet has issues worse than typical bugs or hardware annoyances.
Edit: I just finished flashing 6.0. I can't believe I am saying this but it looks like google has finally fixed most of the performance issues. I can finally load up multiple profiles/chrome browsing and it doesn't start hanging/crashing. 1 year later and they finally got it right. Too bad it still heats up when gaming but that's not as big of a deal.
I love mine personally, there is a tiny hint of backlight bleeding but it's hardly noticeable. Battery life isn't that great, but that's the only downside for me. It always gets me through 2 days of use anyway since I have a phone for other functions. I also would gladly take a slight issue or two for the vastly superior sound setup for media consumption. Apple could maybe get my buck if they integrated FF speakers, and good ones at that. Until then the Nexus is the best for me. I was also thinking about the Asus 8.0 too, it looks good but it's too damned small. I actually think my Nexus is a bit small too, but it's the biggest and best tab I could get for under $300
I've had all sorts of issues with my Nexus 9. Software is better now than it used to be. But up until 5.1.1, multitasking made me want to kill kittens. It's more usable now with the latest 5.1.1 revision on the Pure Nexus ROM and Fire kernel. Except for Chrome, even XDA makes it choke. HD video performance is hit or miss, MX player with Tegra plug-ins was OK and other media apps stutter with high bit rates. I'm not on M now but when I tried it the battery life improved so there is that to look forward to.
The screen bleed on the bottom has gotten worse.
I learned my lesson and won't buy Nexus products again till they are on the market for a while and are thoroughly reviewed/patched.
Stock feels a little clunky on the Nexus 9. Installed CM and it feels much smoother. Overall, I am fairly pleased with mine.
Then again, I do not use Chrome, rather I use Firefox with Adblock+.
I have has both gen 7, and now the 9. I have also had iPads' and a Sony Tablet.
The 1st gen 7 was my favorite. Its form factor felt the best in my hand, the 2nd while faster was uncomfortable to hold. I'm not an Apple fan but work gave me an iPad 2. I rarely used it. Seemed okay. The Sony Z3 Tablet Compact has AMAZING quality. I just wish I could put AOSP on it, not a fan of the Sony tweaks, but over all its made from great materials and its very smooth to operate.
The 9 for me has been great so far. I did the following as soon as I got it, these are things I generally do to EVERY Android device when I get it.
* Change DPI to the screens native DPI (288 in this case)
* Added a line in build.prop to enable hardware UI rendering. <-- not sure if this is really needed anymore so I continue to add it until I'm told its not.
* Hard code the DNS used to the Google DNS servers
* Set all animation scales to .5
* Force GPU rendering to ON
I have never had any crashing or RAM management issues. I DO have the light bleeding issue, but not bad enough to really complain about.
