[Q] Defy Battery status "unknown" and "?" mark. - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello people. I bought a used defy without original charger.
The problem is, it alwas shows "?" sign on the battery icon and battery status "unknown" in settings.
I have been reading through xda forum since 2 days but didnt find a solution for that.
The phone was at stock rom with the problem. If I connected to usb for charging it gave me an error " battery invalid, use original motorola ...."
Moreover it also doesnt charge with usb or my other nokia, samsung charger (micro usb).
Then i searched through the forums. Some proposed the solution of flashing sbf or buying new battery. I cannot buy a new battery yet I spent all my money on this phone.
So I tried sbf flashing and battery fixes. None worked.
So I request you experienced users to help me solve this problem.
I have tried cm 7.2 the battery shows "?". On cm9 and cm10. the battery shows okay but it doesnt change the percentage. say if it is reading 55% at first, then it will keep showing 55% till the phone is out of battery. It still doesnt charge.
However if i boot into the bootmenu, the battery stats shows correct ( I assume it is correct because it lasts according to the percentage showed in the bootmenu).
clearing cache, data, batteyr stats, or dalvik cache, nothing works.
Please help me. I dont want to buy a new battery that costs here for 20% of what I bought this phone for. I also tried to adjust the battery terminals, didnt work.
The battery is ORIGINAL. And I'm currently charging it through nokia 5v 1200 mA charger by a setup i made to connect the charger wires with the battery +ve , -ve.

Anyone for help ?
Anyone for help here?
I think I will have to get a new battery. I'll order it some days later..
Till then, can anyone help me by providing the resistance values from the battery?
B/w "-ve" and the 2 other pins except the "+ve" ? If you have access to a multimeter can you do that ?
I want to be sure if its the battery. It may help other users in future.

Same problem here looking for a solution i even bought new batter y but it wont charge

If your battery is bad and you try to re-flash, you will brick your device (since it will probably stop flashing about half way through - happened to me with my Wizard). Your best bet is to get a new battery... they are rather cheap either on eBay or Amazon...
From your message, everything points to a bad battery...
Good luck!
Thanks for replying
Hey
what do u think the probable problem due to which the battery got BAD?
i am using it from 1.5 years and this problem occured after that BATTERY DRAIN while i was using S2U2 2.33!
so what would be the problem as i mostly have to charge my battery from 60% twice a day so charging many times would be a problem
What do u suggest due to my big usage? Should i buy a extended BATTERY
But i want to tell u that i will take a extended battery if it fits only in the original case i dont want to buy a new case
So tell me the best option to get it also could u send me a link to buy it
it would be great thanks in advance!!!!

It could be that the battery just died on the spot... I don't believe (or at least have never heard of such an issue, let alone related to S2U2. The fact that you've had this for 1.5 years suggests that you bought it used, which means that the battery might be much older than that.
An extended battery will not fit with the original back cover. I believe that there was one (1500 mAh, I think), that it is supposed to fit, but I am not sure.
Just buy a stock battery and you will be in good shape.
hey i took a new battery still the problem occurs
It twice charged till 100% now does not charge above 70%
Same problem here

Don't double post. Also, you are in the wrong section. This is for Vogue (HTC Touch and not Touch HD). You should head over to the Blackstone section and see if someone can help there.

It probably has nothing to do, but what is the output of the charger that you are using? Also, 70% is enough (specially if it is a new battery) to flash a rom. Flash the device to something else and see if that solves the problem.
hey thanks for replying
I got the charger which i go from TELUS & by the way i took the phone new from TELUS and its now 1.5 yrs i took a new battery as u said but still the problem occurs my new battery charged to 100% twice but now it does not chage above 70%
charger is having rating output- 5V - 1A
if u say to change the ROM then which u prefer
I AM USING NFS FAN V17

Anything really, even flash the same one you have if you want to. Just make sure that your battery is charged as much as possible. If I am correct (and I think I am), it is a problem with the battery meter in WM, and flashing will tell WM that whatever your battery level is at that point will represent 100%. Give it a go and remember to back up your stuff before doing this. Good luck!
did the same but i think the problem is wid charger
coz the battery charges with the USB connected with computer
but the orange light comes when connected with charger but battery does not charge
but if the problem is wid charger then i dont think that the battery should charge in mobile off condition???

Try a different charger then. The battery will not charge if the device is off.

[Q] Charging battery for the first time

Hi, I got my Defy today. I put the mobile for charging 2 hours ago. I'd like to know for what period should I put it for charging as it is the first time for optimum performance of the battery..
I tried searching the forum for a similar question but didn't find any. Please delete this post if it is a an already answered question.
Doesn't matter. May be charge it for some 2 hours more. You can't overcharge the battery - it has protection. For optimum performance, just don't drain the battery to 0%, although it has protection for this too.
Ok, thanks, its already been 2 hours since the battery reached 100% mark. Will stop charging now.

Although it is generally said that a new battery should be charged for at least 8 hours before use, it may not be necessary. Just fully charge it. However, the capacity may be lower and unstable at first. If charged too quickly, just take it out and reinsert it, and connect the charger, again.
What I normally do is charge it till 100% and disconnect.
Then every month, I'll use up the battery till it shuts itself down, turn phone off, charge it till full.
Any other time, will plug into mobile charger whenever I'm in the office till it's 100% and use it thereon.
Both answeres after mine, are for the old nicd batteries. For liion batteries it is bad to overcharge and discharge to min. Anyway, as i said, there is soft and hard protection for this, so n.p.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCE!!! I MEAN NONE! that you allow ur batt to goto 0% or you will be effed royally by Defy. I and many others faced this. If your battery is like 15% you either charge it instantly by USB or if you have no means then just turn it off and charge in wall charger when you go home. Just don't ever let your defy goto 0% battery because if it does, you like me and many others will be stuck to M logo or white LED ****.

your lucky bro! don't do that, i was like you all naive and my defy was fine until one day, that happened to me. It didn't turn back on when i tried to recharge it only White LED or M logo.
I didn't even do any flashing or rooting of any kind on my defy then, heck i was on 2.1 eclair. So, be careful and heed my advice or one day you will regret it like I am now.

Use juice defender for added improvements from first day.. i get 2x boost , to save those extra bits when most nedded .. as for ur question , you need to calibrate your battery in order for it last longer
I advice u to charge 100% + 2hrs , and then discharge it to 10% or lower Without charging it in between !,

My phone charges only during the day!!

Itz weird. I'm facing this problem since the last 3 days.
What happens is, my phone does not get charged during the evening or the night. I plugged it in the AC socket, I can see the red light and the battery indicator on the status bar also shows the charging animation. But the battery percentage just does not increase!!
Like, for instance, yesterday night, I tried to charge my phone and it did not get charged. It discharged fully. Today morning, at around 9am, I kept it to charge in the same socket and it charged (upto 100%). And just now, (itz 5:48 pm here) I tried to charge it through the same socket and itz not getting charged. WTF!!
P.S. I'm running CM7 build 16 (or probably 15). I am using this build since it was released.
HTC Wildfire
I think you should calibrate the battery. If still problem persist then my suggestion will be to get a new battery. Because this problem has been asked in Q&A a long days ago. Don't remember the subject line though

1st remove battery wait for sometime later insert it and try to charge ur phone through PC. It might work, else go to clockworkmod > advance > wipe battery > restart. This might work.
I tried that.
BTW, today my phone got charged usinng another charger. Itz still weird. My charger works inn my college but not at my home.. LoL
I think buying a new battery and keeping it as spare is the best alternative.

Best thing I ever bought was a spare battery and a universal (so I can use it when I upgrade too) battery charger that you clip a battery into, I never have to worry about battery life as no matter how hard I hammer it, my spare is always charged first.

Battery Problem

i recently bought a OEM battery for my defy last week
and the problem is that the battery level isn't shown on my device
although the battery bar is 100% all the time
then after 16-18 hours the battery drains automatically, but the problem doesnt ends here
another problem is
i have to charge it through the battery charger or universal charger,
i cant charge it through my phone
(p.s. i have 2 batteries, the other battery gets charged from the phone, but not this one.)
tried 2 different roms
slimkat and AOSPB
any suggestions to my prob ?
try going to /sys/devices/platform/cpcap_battery/power_supply/battery/uevent
and check POWER_SUPPLY_CHARGE_FULL_DESIGN.
if value is at 500 then the circuitry of your new battery is not working properly. it should be atleast 1500

Do you know if there is a way to solve battery problem because of McGyver trick? I have exactly the same problem, but from another perspective, it happens with any battery, I got one recently and had this problem as well, so I just have the option of charging the batteries via universal charger

Hi
Are you on stock rom or custom rom?
If on custom it maybe some kernel issue.
If on stock rom then:
First check your charger, try another one see if there is a change on your device Or check your charger on another device.
Next how old is your battery? I guess about a year old. If all seems fine you can check the mini usb connector in the device, msybe its gone bad or too much dirt.
If all this didnt help much, then its time to service center

hi..thanks for your reply. i am on stock rom. i did reflash my stock rom some times but no luck.
my charger and data cable are good. i tried various chargers and cables but the result was same.
yeah my battery is old nearly 1 year. i am also doubt on battery but i dont know any methods to check it. i have not any spare batteries also. my battery keeps power as normal. its not over heating or critical power down. the problem is slow charging only. do you know any methods to test the battery using any tools like multi meter?
Sorry that i cannot help any further.
And maybe a multi meter woukd help help to check battery.
But you may consider checking the device usb connector itself.
