Agreed, it's a shame, over some small matters, how stupid, what is the world coming to, right's over "touch-use" what next? Just cos' his iPhone is losing money since the "Jailbreak", he's taking it out on HTC to bring his profit margin up, suck-ass!

You probably shouldn't fret too much. The pursuit of the patent protection is for patents registered with the USPTO. In the short term, it won't effect HTC, and certainly won't impact features/functionality in dispute anywhere except the US. Long term, it may kill off HTC if it starts dragging out while Apple bleed HTC in the courts (HTC sell more mobiles in the US market). Then it would impact us.
My big hope is that Palm, HTC and Nokia just clobber Apple with their patent portfolios and Google prop up HTC if it comes to that.

This is just daft. You can pinch & zoom on almost anything these days. Take windows 7 multi touch for example, or multi touch mouse pads.
Btw, how much stuff has apple stolen from other manufacturers in just making a PDA. HTC have been at it for decades,

Short term, no, it probably won't be a big deal, but if HTC loses business in the US because of it, then that is a big deal in the long term. According to this NYT article (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/04/technology/04htc.html?ref=technology), about half of HTC's revenue comes from sales in the US.
And I agree, Apple's just being ridiculous! While I've never complained too much about them, as they do have a history of making good products (mostly), it's stupid things like this that just annoy consumers!

It is the latest in a series of legal wrangles involving Apple. Finnish phone giant Nokia sued Apple for patent infringement in October 2009, alleging it had stolen patented technology. In response, Apple countersued in December 2009, followed by a second round of legal action from Nokia. Apple is also being investigated by the ITC following a complaint by camera manufacturer Kodak. The firm allege that the iPhone uses technology for previewing pictures that infringe Kodak patents.
Apple are just running scared because Android is going to be massive this year. Apple try to discredit Google by attacking HTC on patents some 15 years old!

I do believe that the patents Apple speak off were registered in the US only. Patents have to be filed in each country individually. Europe / Aisia --- the rest of the world would never authorise patents like these. Brings me to think that apple has someone in the patent office who just lets them through.
So even if Apple won, the UK, and the rest of the world would be fine.

HTC is not that big, apple is way bigger. But google already said they would back-up HTC since the most patents are broken by google, and not only the htc sense interface.
This will probably be settled out court, if apple really wants to do damage to htc google will do the same to apple. And google is way bigger than apple.
I think It's kind of weak to sue only htc. But apple is weak, and they'll lose if they go up against google.

Nokia is suing Apple.
KODAK is suing Apple and Blackberry/RIM
Apple is suing HTC
Not many phone makers not affected by some form of legal action!

Microsoft should join in there must be a million things they can sue apple over!!

Its because they know they no longer have the advantage. First-to-market only lasts so long before 'copycat' products appear, better and cheaper than the first models.

Apple is always suing nowadays. Which is completely retarded. Jobs likes to say it's better to steal than to copy or invent, yet his company is constantly trying to stop other companies from doing what he did. He's the biggest hypocrite and I feel terribly for his children that will probably end up with a load of mental problems (just like daddy).

They're suing HTC because HTC became owners of S3 Graphics and Apple infringes on S3's patents. It's a preemptive strike to force HTC into settlement.
It's sort of a test the waters thing....Notice the timing. If they win, great! Because they get to snuff HTC out for a bit in the U.S until the appeals go to court. This could block HTC from getting phones into the U.S when the rumored iPhone 4S/iPhone 5 is released. If they lose, they can keep trying and tying HTC up...it is likely HTC WILL settle and some deal will be made so Apple is 'safe' using the S3 patents and HTC is safe using the Apple patents.
I'm sure on some level Apple is threatened by HTCs growth, I mean they have truly boomed big time in terms of sales and sheer proliferation of devices. There's not 1, but several HTC devices on every carrier and now they are making tablets too. The price of being popular is becoming a blip on Apple's suedar.
Google isn't liable for any of these lawsuits because they don't make a device and they don't sell Android. Any problem with the licensing falls to manuf. primarily who sell devices with Android on them. Microsoft is also going after device manuf. which use Android because it also owns patents that Android 'infringes' on. Don't get me wrong, they CAN go after Google but it would be a long drawn out mess that wouldn't benefit them in the least. It is better to go after the smaller guys who are likely to settle in the form of royalties or cross-patents with snazzy patents they may own themselves.
In the end, it's just business. It's deceptive, sneaky and ugly, but it's business.

Bottom line, Apple's feeling the heat & very threatened .

HTC isn't going away. They will just have to pay a bunch of money to Apple and Google said they will help HTC stay in business if that happens.

HTC isn't going anywhere. They're large enough to take care of themselves and if worst comes to worst they have google backing them and if they're smart, Samsung, Motorola, LG and the empire of android manufacturers will back them up also.

This is only the beginning they're intent is to bring android down they are in the process of sueing everybody.

I think all of them would rather see a competitor fail. Best case scenario in their mind: HTC sales drop, get hit with more fees per phone, become weak and get sold on the cheap.

HTC is already paying MS for each Android phone sold, if they have to pay Apple too it may become prohibitively expensive to sell them and still make enough profit. I don't know how much they pay MS or potentially Apple but it's a possibility.
Not Android but HTC is a piece of the puzzle. And they compete with OEMs not Android.

At the $5 a handset that HTC is paying MicroShaft, if Apple follows the same model, I don't see that eating too much in HTCs profit margin.

Lets say that Apple makes it $10 a handset. How much does HTC pay for a WP7 license? I've heard $5-10, that makes it more espensive or equal. But then consider the additional costs: a WP7 license comes with IP protection (HTC is spending a lot of money fighting MS and Apple), then there's QA testing that has to be handled by the OEM, development costs for drivers, and then finally design and development costs for HTC sense. Android itself is free but creating/selling a consumer version of it isn't. Is $10/handset + the additional costs too much? I have no idea but I don't think it helps.

I think the best response to apple trying to shut down android would be for every android user to file a class action suit against apple to recuperate the money spent on their android phones, I think there would be enough interest to make apple pay attention, maybe just the threat might be enough, who knows....just a thought

these are tough time we're living.. we might lose one of our life's luxury, Android. without Android, everything is locked; you can't do this, you can't do that. Android OS frees your life, free as in freedom to do anything you want with it.

Apple will never stop Android. I actually think they arent't even interested on that. I know it's very annoying to see those news about lawsuits against android and/or devices with android os. This concernes all of us but I think it is importat, especially at this times of turmoil, to take this more objektively. Also, it is important to stay rational and don't let feelings control our reactions. Only now we'll be able to understand these happenings. I hope some of you will get what I'm trying to say

no matter how ridiculous Apple patents are, they will win one way or another. even though they won't win 100%, Apple will surely hurt most android manufacturers to the point where they want to stop making android phones. surely you can live with that, right?

Apple doesn't give a s**t about workers dying in Foxcon, what makes you think they will even notice petition? They are US company. If there is 1$ possible profit from anything, they will go for it.

'coz companies need each other to compete. If there wasn't android, apple would be a random company which produces some electro stuff, and less people would recognize the whole smartphone section the way they do it WITH Android, RIM, WP7 and WebOS or Symbian as competing companies. And doesn't this bringing us together? To have a mutual enemy, is far more productive as you might think
It's also a rule of law, that monopol's aren't allowed in business section. People have the right to be able to choose between various options. Just imagine there were only one Car manufacturer, and this would be GM :O!! Idon't even wanna think about that... At least in Germany, don't know how they handle this in other countries. And because of that, I assume Apple isn't interested on destroying Android. And if they do, google would just change the way how patended things on Android OS works and boom...we're out of that game . Google is one of the most innovative company on the Planet or solar system, of course they'll find a way out of this misery. Never underrate Larry Page and his company guys

I really want to know how the government lets Apple get away with this? I mean for instance didn't Apple just file a patent last year for slide to unlock? How is that legal? How can you just patent something so you can sue other companies? Also I read in the newest lawsuit against the galaxy nexus, they are claiming that Ice Cream sandwich rips off Siri...really? SIRI JUST CAME OUT! Google voice actions for android has been around since what eclair? So Apple is going to rip off Google, file a patent for it, then turnaround and claim they had the idea first and sue google? How does that work?

Uh the fact of the matter is that Android does infringe on many patents. There's a reason manufacturers pay MS a ton of money to prevent litigation, because they know they'll lose. If OEMs wants patent lawsuits to stop then Google needs to rewrite their OS to stop it from infringing on other people's patents. Deal with it.

Siri WAS from Google Voice Search. What FAGpple do is,
-They improved the app by adding many fcuked features.
-They improved microphones to synced with the app.
But still, its Google Voice Search, what is FAGpple's default search? MobileMe? Bing? It's Google.
Also, you guys must remember. Processor chips for iPhone is now manufacturered by Samsung.

These patents really are straight ridiculous, it's clear apple doesn't want to compete they want to be a monopoly. This isn't just apple vs Android this is apple vs blackberry and apple vs windows phone too. Apple wins all this stuff then there will be no competitors, thus creating an apple monopoly. I'm sure it's all a result of them loosing the pc battle to Microsoft in the 90s and being bitter about it but you know what? They wanna destroy Android then make a better product, price more competitively. Take tablets who wants to pay $600 for an ipad when you can get a nook color for $120 refurbished and then root it and put cm7 on and you have a full working tablet!
