[DISCUSSION] Port Ubuntu to Galaxy S3. - Galaxy S III General

Hi Y'all.
This will serve as a main thread for discussion over porting Ubuntu.
At wiki.ubuntu.com a guide to port Ubuntu has been released.
Since, Our I9300 has official CM10 support, it can be ported easily.
Here is the site: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
I can have a go at this, If anyone would host me through teamviewer that'd be great.
To see how ubuntu looks, take a look here: http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone/design
Happy Porting!

Reserved.

I will follow this thread, seems pretty easy to port Ubuntu but not sure about it's functionality...

Awesomee
awesome, i can't wait to install ubuntu phone on my s3

yup, waiting to see some opinions =P

I will flash a port as soon as a stable version with features I need working comes out.

Well, Ubuntu for phones needs a Linux Kernel (stock kernel from Sammy) with a few changes to add extra support for Ubuntu.
I've checked the guide and it's just a few more lines to be added.
If gokhanmoral decides to include this in his Siyah, and a flashable zip is made for the port.
It can easily be set up as dual.
The good thing is that Ubuntu uses Cyanogen Mod, so we can expect a whole load of features.

I hope it will an easy porting How much time do you think it takes untill the porting is done ?

Damn! I might just cancel my plans to sell of my SIII!!

A developer preview is designed for devs to check compatibility of apps and test, it is not designed for everyday use, Canonical don't have to do anything the software is pre-release, that's what a preview is. You can think of a developer preview as alpha, many things will be broken, and a lot will change.

check out this release
seems some fellows at rootzwiki have the preview running on sII. check it out here

My friend , it seems that they are flashing exactly this preview
You can see here : [ cdimage.ubuntu. com/ubuntu-touch-preview/quantal/mwc-demo/ ] the date the ubuntu images were created ( on the official server ) ant today it's 25 and they haven't been yer modified !!! [ I'm new so I can't post links , so please delete the blank spaces in the link ]

I'm worried, that for many users 1gig RAM won't be enought

Well, there is allways SWAP. But doing write cycles to internal flash, or uSD card is not the best option.

Here is some news:
Cannonical are making a preview of the Ubuntu Touch for Galaxy S3.
It's still in WIP.
According to their database.
Codename: I9300
Unlocking Instructions : WIP
Install instructions: WIP
Code/Image: Not currently possible
You can contact: https://launchpad.net/~gianguidorama as he is the one in charge of developing the Ubuntu Touch for S3.

ICS booted on Xperia Play

Okay as many of you know the source of ICS has been released.
However over the past few weeks a few of you may know that I have been trying to port the ICS SDK to Play.....
Well todays update is .....
IT BOOTS!
Will provide screenshots in a little while when more things are complete.
At this moment in time touchscreen does not work for me to check what else works.
Also developers who are willing to test + help with the development of the ROM then PM me and I will send you over a link to download. ( Please give me time to upload )
Also since I am using the SDK it is highly recommended that people do not use this port as an everyday use as it is only the SDK and not all features are on this version as there will be on the main release ( SE ICS Release - From Source AOSP )
Thanks
Dean.
Cool..... looking forward to it as I am sure Verizon will delay their update.........

Because source only got released, what 2 days ago? Where with the SDK I had been working for a week or two on the SDK to get it booted and now finally have got it booted this will open a new door to developers who may be able to get the source booted up through Xperia Play.

I want to have faith in this, but i am losing it.
Guys it was just something he was dicking with until the source was released.
Are you guys waiting for him to release or rom or something? You will be waiting a long time then as this was just an experiment.
if I could get my damn boot ader unlocked on my r800x u would have my phone at ur disposal.
Sorry about the no replys guys!
My Play had been sent off for repairs ( I ADVICE NO ONE TO GO OUT SLEDGING WITH THERE PHONE IN THERE POCKET -.-! ).
I have had no access to internet as my phone was my source of connectivity through tethering.
Also sorry for any inconvenience but this project now has been dropped for the following reasons;
ICS Sources are Released
Cyanogenmod 9 is on its way and FXP will be releasing versions very shortly.
According to multiple rumours a skinless version of ICS is getting released by SE ( Sony ) in the 1st week of January unless they decide to skin.
Once again, I am sorry for the late replys and sorry for the project been dropped.
Keep an eye out on FXP thread, Also head over to Xperia Arc forums to find out the current progress of FXP Cyanogenmod 9

Respect to you Swebosdev as you were the only one who actually understands. I was planning on releasing the SDK but it came to a halt when phone was broken.

SE confirmed their plan on bringing ICS to all Xperia 2011 portfolio phones on stock browser (SE touch site). So why bother?

ParanoidAndroid for the TF101

Any thoughts on if you guys would want it? I know I do!!
I have been trying the past few days to make a port from source but I don't know how to code and the code wont fully download.
If anybody else wants to try, please do cause I really want it ParanoidAndroid on my device here.

My limited knowledge of Paranoid Android leads me to ask - why do you want it on the Tf?
Isn't it designed to give a tablet like experience on phones?
As well made as it is, I wasn't overly keen on the whole tiny u.i on my sgs2.
Otherwise I'm not sure what we would be missing out on.
Application-specific DPI settings would make me one happy panda.

Hi, I have actually compiled ParanoidAndroid 2.12 jellybean rom for the tf101... is a big buggy, but you're welcome to try it...
Just need to try a couple more things to sort out a couple of bugs...

could be interesting. woud be nice to see if any of our other devs would be interested in helping you to iron out the imperfections and take it forward.
Always nice to have an extra rom to mess with
Quick yes or no ? for you......dock supported?

Yes - dock is supported... Well, at least it was working for me last night... Don't have a large SD card to test on it, but it should work (as i'm using the same device tree as others)...
As stated earlier, this is my first proper build (running a CM10 build on my phone, not released though). It would be nice to get others to help, at the moment, ADB doesn't work, everything I have tested is working, including Paranoid Settings... None of my builds seems to have ADB, so i do need to look into that!
As there seems to be enough interest, I think I will open a thread later - will link to it here though so you can all see it!
nice - look forward to it.:good:
Please make this happen

to be honest, it's not much really, almost nothing works correctly, and a whole ton of work is needed to make it stable and work right. unless the MyTouch 4G is your secondary, "toy phone", i wouldn't recommend you use it. very buggy indeed lol.
We don't have it yet because ubuntu os is built largely on CM10.1. That is a ***** to build for non-official CM devices (we were official for cm7), it'll get built eventually but in the meantime, its probably a waste of time building.

I've had an iPhone since about three months ago (because they were the only phones readily available to be bought used and without a contract), but have always kept up with Android. It doesn't seem like innovation stopped. What are we missing now? Cyanogenmod seems to be packed with innovative features, so does AOKP.
BTW, great signature.

I don't think any iPhone is in the works for omni at the moment
I felt what was missing was a team to implement ideas that have never been imagined by the average person, or have been thought of as to be "too difficult" to implement.
I feel this rom, and the team behind it, is the answer to this problem, which should open doors up in other teams, including cyanogenmod
And thanks

It WOULD be a feat to crack the iPhone's bootloader past the iPhone 3G and get Android booting on there, wouldn't it..?
So, the OmniROM will not just be another copy of another custom ROM? Now that it's being mentioned, I do feel like a lot of them just have the same features.Maybe that's why I'm not fully satisfied when I habitually flash new ROMS.

I work with someone who builds for the iPhone. I might get them to add omni support for it.
Omni is based on aosp (the stock source from google). From their patches are added to support an array of devices. Then new features are added. Seeing as it's a fairly new project (only been around 2 months), there aren't a lot of new features, however there are a few ones to note
They are adding true multi window support
The quick settings tiles are flipable
There see, so to be a new app called "OmniGears". I'm unsure about what exactly this will do, but it seems to contain rom specific settings
I hope this is enough to convince you this won't be a "copy of another rom"

im also very interested as to which phones will be supported...but not only that but how easy will it be to get your device supported...im over in Asia and there aren't variants that aren't well supported by the major custom rom developers like AOKP, CM, Panandroid....which makes it really hard and sucks to get in on the "open source" goodness...i hope Omni is easy to bring to a large selection of phones...

Asian phones implying mediatek based? There are a few commits in Gerrit to add support for them, but I think it's still not usable. They'll do their best
As for not being supported. Unfortunately it's down to getting a device maintainer. There will be guides posted no doubt, and this is xda. Basically a massive manual on hacking android

If you can get AOSP to run on your device, you should be able to get Omni to run. Currently, a device tree needs nothing significant beyond an AOSP tree (I think about 3 lines of changes to make an AOSP tree work in Omni). This means work on porting Omni is helpful to those wanting AOSP as well.

Mediatek chips will most likely end up supported. I understand that most projects eschew them through a lack of sources etc, but we intend to do what we can with them, as they offer interesting opportunities including multi-SIM support to say the least.

Yes, it will be supported, we just didn't list it due to nobody having one to hand to test.

While it doesn't look like there is "official support" for it per se, I doubt it would be hard to get it building for it. Somebody will figure it out for sure.

Ah OK. As I said, if you can get AOSP to run properly, then yes it will work.

I'm hoping for jftlevzw supoort (vzw sgs4) but seeing these locked bootloaders and coming from a sprint evo 3d the vzw S4 dev looks pretty dead.

Unfortunately the amount of carrier interference on many US phones makes them less fun for anyone wanting custom ROMs If you can get the SIM-free international model, that often helps, but that's obviously not possible with Verizon...

Hats off to you guys, this is kind of a great progress you've done here. I was like wtf when I saw the project in the news in the morning. Already registered at your Gerrit and started syncing sources. I'm really excited to see this running on my P880. Hope you don't mind that I'm cheating. Will help you with this project as much as I can.
(@cybojenix: Probably this will be TNBT. )

Don't mind at all. I am pushing it to Github to make it easier for you guys. I'll also need to fix the repo remotes (unless someone else gets there first) so it pulls from Github.
