[Q] Change Phone ID - Droid X General

Is it possible to change the ID of a Droid X to fool Verizon into thinking it's a dumb phone? My wife is considering upgrading to a smartphone for the first time and I want her to be able to try it out using WiFi only for a while first. Any help would be appreciated.

Unsure on what you mean by dumb? I have a Droid X, no service, I use it on Wi-Fi all the time and as an mp3 player. You could do the same putting it in Airplane mode and turning Wi-Fi on.

She has a "feature" phone now to make calls and texts from. I would like to activate the X for her to be able to call and text from, just not pay for data yet.

It's impossible. The DROID X has a built in 3g sim. While most feature phones have a built in 2g sim. Verizon does have a prepay plan. I would look into that but for simple testing purposes, you can just reset the phone and skip setup.

Thanks for you input guys. Unfortunately it looks like I may be stuck getting her an iPhone.

I was so used to doing this on my iPhone using AT&T. Is this possible on verizon? If im on a lengthy call, after i hang up a stream of txts and email start to come in as if it was just waiting for me to hang up.

Practically? No. It's a limitation of the CDMA technology. It can carry Voice *or* data, but not both.
Technically? Yes. Download a SIP or Skype client, and run VoIP (which is just Data). Don't think it's very practical though.
You can if you have an active wifi connection. I do it all the time at work cause i get put on hold for what seems like hours some days.

I do wifi at home and work so the limitation isn't too bad. Of course 4g will fix this, but not for this phone.

I believe AT&T is the only network that allows voice and data at the same time currently, but i know for sure that Verizon doesn't allow such things sadly...

Not just at&t, all 3g gsm based carrier can transfer voice and data at the same time, so t-mobile can do this also.
Boooo

T-mobile does allow both data and voice at the same time. Sadly their network nation wide is terrible. If I travel between cities, which I do alot. I lose connection CONSTANTLY. Causing issues with Pandora, Navigation using Google Nav, etc.
My wife and I are in the process of selling out Nexus Ones and moving to Verizon due to this sadly. I loved my N1 and so did she.
Maybe my Droid X and her Droid Incredible will fill that Google love gap.
The no data and voice does kinda stink. We used that more than you'd think.
Especially when driving with our device attached to the car's Bluetooth Sync.
Google Nav & Pandora Running while be able to accept and send new calls
through the cars bluetooth was very nice and convenient. Works great with our Ford Edge.
I just migrated from an iPhone 3GS on ATT to a Droid X on VZW. I have to say... I'd rather have a phone on a network that could do a great job with voice or data one at a time than a network that in many instances couldn't do either reliably (but could do then both at once).

Agreed. Id rather have a device that does two things separately very well than a device that is terrible doing them separately or together at the same time.

I have spent 2 days on the phone with customer care and they act like they have no clue what the device is. They think it is the phone and not the tablet. The problem I'm having is a Rep told me u can do a non contract data line for the tab and pay $40 a month. Ever since they added the data line I haven't had internet. They have confirmed that I have a tab but they don't know what data plan I should be on. What happens is every time I try to connect the the market or anything that uses data it fails and ask me to retry. I made sure I have the correct apn setting and its still not working
out of Apple semen came the HTC Evo
Do you have SIM card in your Tab?
Where did you get the Tab from? At the store? or online?
Did the internet work in 3G at the store? what about with wifi?
Did you sign up for any plans when you got the Tab?
You should be on one of the web connect plans for the Tab.

having same issue here. Data plan worked yesterday but have not been able to connect today. Only goes to MY.TMOBILE.COM. Inserted sim in HD2 and it works properly.
Cant receive MMS or access data plan on Galaxy Tab. Shows EDGE network is connected. Can make calls, send and receive text. Can send MMS.
Any ideas?
If anyways else is has flashed their Tab to make calls on Tmobile US did you have to make any changes to network settings? APN name is showing as "T-mobile US 310 260"
Thanks for any info you may be able to provide.
Sounds like you guys are most likely not on the right data plan. As stated earlier you need to be on the web connect data plan. If you are on a voice plan plan with the android data feature it won't work. Or more specifically it may work for a bit then stop working once the imei is filtered.

Thanks for the straight forward simply explanation. Why isnt there more people complaining of this after they flashed to JK1 for voice service?

[Q] t-mobile for calls and another service for data

Is anyone using T-mobile for making calls only, no data and using a different service for data?
I am wanting to use T-mobile for my phone calling service but I want to use my hotspot/modem for wifi as it always goes with me and I am already getting a good deal on it. So I am looking to see if anyone has done this. When I talk to T-mobile they say that their pay as you go has no data but I am wondering if there is any way for T-mobile to interfere with my wifi hotspot/modem. BTW I am new to smart phones.
No you can do that. Just have your Nexus 4 connected to the WiFi hotspot all the time and you will be fine. It won't interfere with your cellular connection for phone calls and messaging

This will work. I did this when I used a phone that didn't have T-Mobile bands.

Safest way to tether without a plan on T Mo?

Id like to tether on the Nexus 4 rarely, but it might use a chunk of data. Is there a way to do so without them detecting it? I know a lot of people frown upon asking these questions, but id like to know
Thank you!
Haha! It probably is going to be very difficult without actually hacking into their servers. And once you are caught I doubt the trouble you would get if you get caught will be fun. So in short, maybe if you are a 1337 h4x0r.

So the tethering apps cant spoof the traffic to look like its mobile?
They detect you by sniffing for your browser "User Agent".
1) Use an encrypted VPN tunnel as your default gateway.
2) Use HTTPS URL's
3) Change your browser User Agent
Are 3 ideas that come to mind.
Easy? I'd you enable wireless hotspot under data, it works great! I use it sometimes, never had issues. I had a family emergency last week and my mom literally had to fly to Russia same day we found something out. Long story short I ended up driving to her house and helping her with everything. She had to unlock her iPhone 5 on sprint so that she could get a Sim over there temporarily.
Reset the iPhone and we had to leave to the airport. Since I cloud doesn't do anything over mobile network, I had to make my nexus into a hotspot while we drove, besides tmo is like 100x faster than sprint. Anyway, all was well, at the the end of the day my data usage shows 2gb worth of data, no problems.

I really don't think T-mobile cares as much as you are thinking. I use my phone to tether to my xbox and tablet quite a lot since my wifi sucks, and they haven't said anything. I think it might be that they don't monitor prepaid plans as closely, but what's the worst that could happen?
Without a data plan or without a tethering plan? There are ways to tether without a tethering plan such as VPN.
What if I connected my phone to my home VPN and funneled all traffic through there?
awesome
yesterday i found new galaxy s3 ))))))))
If you don't overdo it, T-Mobile won't bug you.

[Q] WiFi Hotspot on Verizon without being billed?

Hi all
I have a Verizon Motorolla Droid RAZR M (XT907) and it's rooted. I was using the stock tethering app in settings from Verizon and my company told me not to use it, then gave me a MiFi portable hotspot, but then 2 months later they took it away.... So now I want to figure out how to tether my phone without the company being billed for tethering. I tried FoxFi but it doesn't work at all. Anyone have a good app for this, preferably free? Or some way to use the stock app without being billed? I tried to search but there's nothing specific to my question...
You could try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981625 but of course they would see an increase in data...
