The "Battery & data manager" function on the settings screen of my Defy+ takes ages to start up, leaving me staring at a blank screen for 20s or more before displaying the Data Meter/Data saver/Data delivery and Battery mode/Battery usage selection screen. None of the other settings functions have anything like this amount of delay in starting up. Any ideas why it might be doing this, and how to stop it?

I installed 3G WatchDog and its in constant use. I installed SpareParts to look at network usage and the first item is 0 and when I tap on it, it FCs. I am going to wipe and reflash the ROM later and take a look later but anyone have this problem or a solution? Or a way to see what app is using my connection constantly?
Not sure if this helps, but in Settings - Wireless & networks - Mobile networks - there is an option for 'Enable always-on mobile data' which I believe keeps your 3g running all the time.
http://androidforums.com/147137-post14.html
That is probably one of the better explanations for what disabling 3G Always on does. Seems like it's a huge battery saver.
OP: have you tested the suggestion in the article donatom3 linked?
Let us know...
My Wifes EVO is having the same issue. Her phone is contantly downloading data. I got a clue when I looked at her data useage and she clock 14GB for the partial month.
I shut down services until I found the culprit. It was "People". I checked sync setting and all and it seems they are all set to 1 hour or more intervals. When I force a close of "People", the data access stops and goes to normal even if I restart "People".
If I shut down the phone and then turn back on, then it seems to start all over again.
As a bandaid, I have set Advance Task Killer to kill the "People" service automatically every 30 min.
I would sure love for someone to find a more permanent resolution.
Can't you just remove it from the home screen, and it will stop using the data?
Noticed lately that every time I wake my screen up from being off by just pressing the power button and unlock it, the phone seems to do a data refresh and the 3G icon lights up and the up/down arrows light up transferring data.
Any clue why this would be? I think it might effect my gmail as I've noticed some times that ill get mail upon waking up the screen.
I'm using DC 3.2.3 with the FPS kernel for the Epson screens if it makes any difference. Also have that gmail account set up on exchange in the htc mail set to check every 4 hrs but the issue I notice the lack of push some times is in the actual gmail app that should be 100% push from what I understand.
The data transmit on screen wake up is what gets me though. I have gtalk still running in the background before anyone jumps on that. Also noticed this issue when running the stock rom too so dont think its a DC thing.
Any suggestions or comments on this?
bump for some hopeful insight on this
Probably some kind of a script on turning display on.
Check Autostarts.

Any particular way to do this? I mean I can check the running services and see whats running but I want to see whats using the data connection on the screen wake up.
Settings > Wireless > Mobile Networks > "enable always-on mobile data"
if it's unchecked, it will pull certain data when you wake the phone.

While that makes sense I'd like to know what is constantly using data it seems with mobile data on b/c it still flash's the arrows quite a lot. This is odd to me when i dont have anything loaded to refresh every 15sec or somin like that and even the weather is set to every hour.... other than that and set cpu, titanium backup, system panel there isn't anything running out of the norm thats not htc/android related in the running services.
Follow these steps to change a simple setting in the GPS system that prevents it from eating away at your battery. It has NO NEGATIVE effect on GPS performance. In fact, my GPS works extremely well despite the misleading 30m bug.
Turn on your GPS (from the Status Curtain or Power Control widget).
Open Dialer on your phone and type in *#1472365#.
Tap on "Setup".
Tap on "Position Mode".
Tap on "Starting Mode".
Select "Cold Start".
Another way to prevent unnecessary power usage (Until Samsung fixes this which I suggest people complain to them about) is to disable your EV-DO data connection.
I do it manually though these steps:
Open Dialer and type in *#4636*1111#
Tap on "Phone information"
Press the Menu button
Tap on "More"
Tap on "Disable data connection"
To restore the data, just follow the same steps but the menu will show "Enable data connection"
Other methods are to use the free version of JuiceDefender (Cancel the useless installation of AOSP helper).
Disconnecting data still allows phone calls and text messages to go through. This is perfect for people who have good 4G and WiFi coverage so you'll never be without data and still get good battery life.
Please keep this thread clean of any questions, if you need help just PM me. Only report any feedback or suggestions in here.

Solutions not working. Did you test for long enough? 24 hours at least with no reset? Restarts clear cache as does any manipulation *#1472...
My tests show ANY manipulation of *#1472... flushes expired but stuck xtra data so teh poofs are not really valid since you get an instant lock if you change it to cold start and back to hot.
make sure to check after one day with no resets (which flush xtra cache and give you an immediate fix anyway.) I have been testing warm start for 48 hours and thought I was ok, but in fact once emphermis expired, typcial situation of 8 to 11 seen, none in use.
Also staying in same place will render ephemeris checking less valid.
I have three Epics devices. I have been experimenting with old, one warm and one hot, reset, take a fix tonight, turn off gps call applications, and see which are holding expired ephemris and not fixing those seen 10 hours later from a different location.
What I know for sure is of the four Epic location problems*, the main one, seeing sats and not using them, is a clear symptoms of expired xtra data (epehmeris. almanac, and sometimes net time.)
I have been reading for the last few days this:
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=pl...s.git;a=blob;f=loc_api/libloc_api/loc_eng.cpp
It seems gpstest (author:Lookwood) does have a function to clear xtra but it is not workign on Epic. I beleive the call in android would be
" loc_eng_delete_aiding_data (GpsAidingData f)"
Other notes:
1)It seems omniaII had a similar problem.
2) forcing cold start is not an optimum solution anyway as absent network xtra data source (a sprint connection), aka standalone gps maybe will be forced to pull almanac at each and every LBA gps call, meaning unnecessarily long times before acquisition (TTFF) in true standalone
*Epic location problems I am seeeing
1) GPS. Failure to flush invalid and expired xtra (*ephemeris and almanac)
2) GPS. mediocre to poor SNR ranges
3) GPS: invalid accuracy (false number hardcoded not dynamically calculated)
4) cell based: occasional abject failure to produce location from network alone.
A proper tuning it seems to me is setting the TIMING of the xtra data flush coordinated with QOS timing of a renewed xtra data attempt if Epic sees sats but you cant get a fix in say 2 minutes.
I was in France last week, and my Defy+ kept popping up a warning about the cost of data roaming. This was a dialogue box which appeared over the home screen, and which required me to tap "Yes" (to continue to use roaming data) or "No" (to turning roaming data off) before I could proceed. The phone did this repeatedly, even after I had told it "Yes" several times.
It looked to me as though the screen came on when the warning popped up, and stayed on until I cleared it. So as well as being annoying, it was draining the phone's battery by keeping the screen on while the phone was sat in my pocket.
I use 3G Watchdog to keep an eye on my data usage, and I found that this app has a widget which turns mobile data on and off. So I installed the widget and made a point of switching mobile data off whenever I wasn't using it. Frustratingly, that didn't stop the roaming data warning from popping up and draining my battery.
I know how to disable and enable roaming data through the system settings, but (a) it's a faff, and (b) the Battery and Data Manager section of system settings is very slow to load.
Does anyone know how to stop the roaming data warning from popping up in the first place? Alternatively, is there an app out there with a widget which will enable and disable roaming data quickly and easily?
P.S. I'm sure it didn't do this when I was in Italy last year, so I don't know what's different about being in France.
I got an update yesterday which was pretty small in size, around ~40 - 50 MB. The Android version was not updated to 7.1.2 so I presumed it was the monthly security patch and not the OTA beta. I'm on Project Fi and experienced my phone dying with 20 - 30% battery remaining with the Nougat update a couple of months ago. But today my phone died with more than 50% of battery remaining in the middle of the day. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem after the recent update?
So I just finished chatting with Google support person and asked them to raise a bug for this but they insist that I keep my phone in safe mode for at least a day and do a factory data reset before escalating this issue.
Here's the email that I got:
Hi sleekstrike,
Thank you for contacting Google Support Team.
As per our chat conversation, I'm sending you this followup email. Most phone and tablet batteries will drain quickly as the device is used more often or more intensively. If you feel your battery is draining too quickly, we need to determine if this is due to normal usage or due to a faulty battery. Below are some steps and tips that may help determine and resolve the issue.
You can also check out our Tips for making your battery last YouTube video.
Step 1: Restart your device.
Restarting your phone will clear temporary files and may resolve any app-related issues.
Hold the Power button until a menu appears prompting you to power down the device. When the device powers off completely, press and hold the Power button until your device powers on again. Step 2: Check for system updates for your device.
Downloading and installing system updates for your device can help prevent and resolve issues with your device.
Go to "Settings" > scroll down to "System" > touch About phone (or tablet) > touch System updates. If a system update is available, download it. Step 3: Check for apps updates on the Play Store.
Downloading and installing available app updates will ensure that the app is working as intended, which includes fixes for bugs and issues on previous versions.
Open the Google Play Store app. Touch the Play Store icon > touch My Apps to view your downloaded apps. Apps with available updates are labeled "Update." It's recommended that you select Update All, but you can individually choose which apps you want to update. Step 4: Settings adjustments and other actions.
a) Use the Recent Apps button to close unused apps that may still be running.
The Recent Apps button is the third touch button at the bottom of your device that looks like two rectangles on top of each other. When you touch the Recent Apps button, you can swipe left or right on an app to dismiss it. Some Android users are not aware that apps on the Recent Apps list are running in the background and may be contributing to memory and battery consumption. b) Temporarily turn off features not in use.
Location services and GPS: Settings > Location access > Turn off access to your location. Bluetooth: Settings > Wireless & networks > Slide the Bluetooth switch to Off. c) Use Airplane mode in low/no coverage areas if you cannot use or don't plan to use data over your mobile network.
Settings > Wireless & networks > Moreā¦ > select Airplane mode. Although mobile network connection is disabled in airplane mode, Wi-Fi can be re-enabled: Settings > Wireless & networks > Slide the Wi-Fi switch to On. d) Enable auto brightness.
Settings > Display > Brightness > select Auto e) Reduce the delay before the screen goes to sleep. The screen is often the biggest drain on the battery, and this step will reduce drain when the screen is not in use.
Settings > Display > Sleep > Set small time frame (such as 1 min or less) f) Minimize use of graphic or memory intensive apps when you need to conserve battery. This could include video streaming, gaming, or camera use.
g) If you know you are going to use intensive features more than usual, such as when traveling, plan in advance.
Plug in your charge cable while using GPS navigation in your car, if able. Carry around your USB cable and plug into USB ports to charge, if able. Bring a backup battery for your device when taking many photos and videos, if possible. h) Disable application notifications from apps that are giving you unwanted or too many notifications.
Settings > Apps > touch the specific app > uncheck Show notifications Touch the Back button (curved arrow toward the bottom left of the screen) and repeat as necessary for other apps. i) If you're using a tablet and have multiple user profiles, switch to unused profiles and (similar to step a) use the Recent Apps button to close all the apps open on that profile.
Alternatively, you can delete unused tablet user profiles: Settings > Users > touch the trash can to the right of the profile you wish to delete. The main user profile can't be deleted. If your battery still drains unusually fast after going through all the above basic steps, try Steps 5-7 below.
Step 5: Use the Battery settings.
Visit our Manage battery life help article. Check battery level & usage details of your device to determine if any unused features or third-party installed apps are draining the battery quickly. Step 6: Enable safe mode on your device.
In safe mode, all third-party applications will be disabled. This can help pinpoint issues caused by third-party installed apps. To restart your device in safe mode:
Ensure your device's screen is on, then press & hold the Power button. Touch & hold the Power off option in the dialog box. Touch OK in the following dialog to start safe mode. To exit safe mode, turn your device off and on again. It's recommended that you try safe mode for a few hours or up to a full day, if able. If your battery continues to drain abnormally quickly while in safe mode, try Step 7 below.
Step 7: Reset your device to factory settings.
If your device continues to drain quickly, resetting the device to factory settings may resolve the issue. Resetting your device to factory settings will erase all local data on your device. Backup of your personal local data (pictures, music and video files) is recommended.
To backup personal data on your device To reset your device to factory settings After resetting your device to factory settings, continue to use your device normally to determine if your battery issue is resolved.
If your battery issue was resolved during these steps, great! You can help other customers with similar battery issues if you reply to this email to let us know which step best resolved your battery issue.
If your issue was not resolved and your battery still drains abnormally fast, call us or reply to this email and reference that you already went through all of our Battery Drain troubleshooting steps.
If you have any more questions, please reply to this email. I'm happy to help!
Thanks! Kiara S The Google Support Team
This is their initial steps they want you to try before they do anything. If you bought the phone through the google store they will replace it even if it's out of warranty. At least they did for me. All I had to do was call them back and tell them I followed these steps and the issue was still happening.

It's not the update- It's your battery getting worse. Keep working with Google until they send you a replacement, back up all your data, and transfer it to your replacement phone when it arrives. In order to simplify restoring to the new phone disable password/pin/fingerprint first before making a backup on your current phone. Good luck.
