Hi,
few days ago a friend showed me a great OSx functionality - Smart Folders.
Basically it is a "virtual" folder, does not really contains files but rather an active search folder.
Let say you want to have a place that will display only word/text documents created within last 5 days, or only doc files.... regardless of where they really are.
Can you get such functionality in Windows?
I know "search" pretty good but using it instead of set folder, means we have to perform search every time we want to display files we look for,
There's a thing in Windows (going all the way back to Vista) called "Saved Searches" although I've never met anybody who uses it. Open Explorer and run a search. Use the Search tab on the Ribbon to refine the search, if you want - search by date, or size, or exclude certain file types, or whatever - and then click Save Search. Specify the location you want the saved search to appear in under the filesystem (defaults to <username>\Searches). It will appear as a special sort of washed-out folder icon with a search icon superimposed on it.
You can also create "virtual folders" that combine the contents of several real folders; that's all that libraries are. It's easy to create your own, too. Probably not what you were referring to, though.
Libraries ARE smart folders.... Apple playing 'catch up' again!!!!!
As described, I actually thing the saved search folders are much closer... but yeah, as I said, that's been in Windows since 2006.
The only thing I find annoying with "saved search" that I cant' set it to update on intervals. It is only updating when I open the folder - this means I have to wait
I do not know Mac OS at all but form what I seen it looked to be working "more user friendly" on Mac Pro.

Does anyone have a hack that would allow me to view and save data files at a lower folder than the first level?
I.e. my folder structure is \Personal\Financial\ but excel and word can only see files stored under \Personal\ and not the next folder down. I need to be able to access this second level from within the application.
Would be a great help to me.
If you haven't installed Mad Programmer's dialog changer, you're not using your pda properly.

Thanks vijay555 but this is not in relation to installing apps.
There is a particular problem in WM2003 whereby if I store for example my pocket excel files in the folder:
\Financial\Spreadsheets\
I cannot access this folder from Pocket Excel but only from File Explorer. Pocket excel will only show the files existing in the folder "Financial" here. It means that when I create a new excel (or any other document) from within the application, I have to save it to the "financial" directory first, then manually move it to the next folder down.
Same applies to Pocket Word, Listpro etc files (any files in fact).

pauldcullen: although the link I gave is talking about installing cabs and stuff, Mad Programmer's dialog changer hooks into the OS and changes all of the rubbish OS dialogs (that only allow you to see My documents etc) and replaces them with the more advanced kind that let you navigate anywhere.
The link I gave is a useful one on installing the app itself, because Mad Programmer's website is generally Japanese. But hopefully, try installing the app and you should be able to navigate anywhere for saving files.

Ensure you use the right version for your OS.

thanks a lot I'll give it a shot - any stability problems with it?
I've never had any and used it for > 1year on both Wm2003 and Wm5.
V
vijay I've installed it and it seems to work for SAVING new files into a sub-directory which in itself is great!
However, as soon as I OPEN pocket excel etc, I cannot see these files in the subfolders, only those in the parent folder - any ideas?
Thanks for your help!
Paul
Hmm, I just noticed that...
It seens mad programmer only hooked the saving, not opening dialogs.
Not the best option I know, but I never open files using word, I use gsfinder to locate them and open directly by double clicking.
Other then that, I don't think Word was "designed" to show the subfolders as you've got them configured. PITA I know.

This seems like a question that must have been asked and answered many times before, but I'm apparently to dumb to find it by searching the archives. I'm hoping someone will have mercy on my ignorant self, and tell me the answer.
Here's what I'd like to do. I use a website, Sigalert, to check traffic before I leave the house to go to work. That way I know which route will get me to work quickest. (Not that I'm anxious to arrive at work, but they do complain so loudly when I'm late). I'd like to create a shortcut to the web page so I can put an icon on the today page (I use Resco Explorer, which allows me to put shortcuts to programs etc on the today screen). Anyway, if I could create a shortcut to the web page, I could do this, or assign the shortcut to a button, or whatever. If I only knew how to create a shortcut to a webpage, which I don't, so please help. I'm using Opera if that makes a difference. Thanks for your help!

I'd have to think out a process for doing that, perhaps later. Meantime, just a quick thought why not set it as your PIE homepage.
Another thing I do is to create a word page with lists of weblinks including streaming TV and radio stations. If I open the page I can tap on the link I want and it auto opens PIE and loads the page. You might ask why not just put these web links in PIE favourites - answer, it takes a while for PIE to load and then you have extra taps to get to favourites etc etc. Also it's a lot clearer on the word document and you can also type a little description beside each one.

Hi,
Thanks for the tip. I just tried creating a word doc with my most used websites. Works well. I've put the word doc on the Today screen in the Resco area with a large icon. I can poke it with my fat thumb and launch the document. I used 12 point & double spacing in the word doc, and I can poke the links with my fat thumb as well. It works better than my previous solution, which was creating a contact for the website, starting the name with a symbol so it showed up at the top of the contact list, I'd poke at on contacts from the Today screen, then on the contact, then again on the website. Unfortunately this opened the page with PIE instead of Opera. Your solution is a lot easier to open with thumbs, and allows me to use my preferred browser, but it does leave a bit of cleanup to do. Once the browser is closed, the Word doc must be closed, then the Word Mobile "open file" screen must be closed, then it seems "Search" continues to run in the background. None the less, your solution is better that what I had been doing, so I'll use it. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Ah Ha! I think I have the solution... at least for Resco users, although for all I know, Resco may not be necessary. Here's how I was able to make a shortcut to a URL to put on the Today screen, use with voice dialing, etc..
First I made a Word file with one line: the URL I wanted to make a shortcut to.
After saving it as a word doc, I highlighted it in Resco file explorer, then right clicked (push and hold w/stylus), selected "rename" and changed the extension to .lnk
Then I right clicked the renamed file and chose properties, then selected the shortcut tab. The target was a bunch of gobblygook, so replaced the gobblygook with the URL I wanted the shortcut to point to and clicked OK.
Success! Now the file is a shortcut. When I click on it, it goes to the website I selected as the target. It can be accessed with voice dialing: start/settings/voice dialing/ application tab/ then choose the shortcut from the list. Or you can assign it to a button. Or you can put it on the Today screen using Resco.
It may be that all the steps are not necessary, it's just how it ended up working for me.
Hey everyone,
I developed this app as a part of my final year project. Initially I had big plans for it (I still feel that PPC lacks strong apps in this area.. OneNote doesn't cut it for me), but got busy with work/studies and forgot all about it.
I have also created a web version for it (sync your data with a web url), but thats too alpha at the moment. If anyone wants to beta test it, please let me know.
I'm uploading the last versions I made of this app to gather some bug reports, problems, crashes, new features etc which people might be interested in.
Keep in mind, I want this app to be so good that people can finally leave their paper notebooks home
I know some things aren't working well or at all, for e.g. synchronization.
Play around with the buttons (the tooltips etc should tell you what they're for)
Features:
arrange data in notebooks and pages. (basically you create a notebook and then insert a page into it..)
There are two modes.. view/edit.. edit mode gives you basic text input where you can format text using the following wiki syntax (effect of formatting is only visible in view mode):
*text* - bold
\text\ - italic
_text_ - underline
+ (add more pluses upto 6) gives you heading (e.g. ++My heading)
~color:green~ any text after this will be green. you can use this for most named colors
[link to another page] link between pages (linking will automatically happen if you use CamelCase/wiki syntax.. you can enforce linking by putting [Notebook/Page name] <-- in square brackets as such. Links can be renamed as well [[renamed link][Notebook/ActualPage]]
You can insert images using the button/menu options. these images are imported into the notebooks directory.
Search notes
tag notes
bookmark notes (you can even bookmark searches, the stored search will be re-run every time, so for e.g. if you bookmark a search with dates later than last week, then it'll give you new results every time)
Maintain clipboard history and auto insert copied stuff into current page. (keyboard is polled every second)
Most important feature:- You can just copy over your notebooks/bookmarks directory (or sync it using any sync tool), and the same notebooks/pages/bookmarks will be available on both PPC and Win32.
Download:
http://ace.xhaven.net/DN-Win32-PPC.zip
Installation:
- Just unzip the win32 and PPC directories to your desktop and PDA.. click on the exe to run program. Should work on wm2003/wm5/wm6
Known bugs/issues:
- clipboard isn't working on PPC
- PPC version is slower, doesn't have softkey support yet
- PPC Icons look wierd
- .... add more?
Disclaimer:
I make no claims that this will work properly, or even execute on your desktop/PPC. I dont owe you anything. Please try this at your own risk.
no one tried it yet?
Nice Idea
Thanks,
This is great idea, i tested the note book, it is good.
But quite difficult to use on mobile, can u change the interface to make it easy to understand and write.
You're right, the PPC version is not that easy to use. Hopefully I'll get some time on this weeked to fix that up, as well as allowing common actions to be performed using hard/soft keys.

Yes that would be cool, waiting for your new version.
These are my requests that I have which would actually "complete" my perfect HD2... if any members here would like to contribute some info as to how I may go about and fulfill them, then I would have much gratitude. Thanks
-Aside from the volume control that MysticGenious posted along with his taskbar, is there any other cab or registry change that will allow me to change my volume in increments of 1 as opposed to 3 bars each time? I am familiar with the paid app, but I do not want to go that route.. If mysticGenious created something that works when you use his taskbar, then I'm sure someone else has created something.
-Take the application "FootPrints" for example... Unless I have that activated on my tab screens, I am unable to create a shortcut so that I can save it on as a quicklink. This is the same with the HTC Calender App and any other tab application. If its not active in the Tab menu then the shortcuts doesn't exist. Is there a workaround? I would like to use Foot Prints, but I only want it as a quicklink, NOT as a Tab folder. I have already tried activating the tab and creating the shortcut to the quicklinks, but as soon as i removed it from the Tab Menus, it disappeared. There has got to be a way for this to happen. Cause I mean the program is there, but for some reason it only works if its active in Tabs.
-Transformers... I have tried reinstalling the Transformers cab but that didn't work. I just want to be able to click the Transformers shortcut and be able to select either 1 or 2 and then the movie instantly pops up. I have the movies saved on my sd card now, but because i moved them out of the SD card and onto my computer at one point in time, the link that connected them is no longer there. Basically I have all the components, I just need some guidance on how to make the shortcut link and work again... I'm assuming that i have to direct the file via registry editor "Total Commander" or something, I am just confused when it comes to that stuff on my HD2
and believe it or not, thats actually the only issues I have left with the phone, I'm sure that someone has a suggestion, or knows an answer... thanks a lot guys
I have a simple htc HD2 and I am fond of reading . Is there any best reader for HD2. I heard that the t-mobile one gets a official htc e reader. how can I get that? And yes I copied navipanel.exe on my start menu folder now it won't go. how could I?
I don't know about the reader. I just get my books in PDF and use Adobe reader, so I didn't bother looking for another reader.
about the navipanel, there was something about it here if I remember well
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
unless you mean you couldn't delete it.. please provide more info
Yes Thanks. By Navipanel I meant that I copied navipanel.exe from windows folder to startmenu folder. It is t=in the same place. But In my start menu I see Navi Panel with no icon and it is not working too so I wanted to remove it from my list of start menu. But I can not.
Put Navipanel back to default location & shourtcut in StartMenu will function again.
You could try deleting shortcut with file explorer from within Start Manu.
As for book reader I use uBook a bit as handles quite a few formats. It is actually quite good once you get use to the menu layout & get some basic preference settings they way you like.
For a reader have a look on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581516

Exactly. You don't copy EXEs to start menu, you copy shortcuts, much like on PC.
when you long press on an item in file explorer, "create a shortcut" should be available. copy that to start menu.
if you have trouble deleting the file, it might be still set to "system" or "ROM" in attributes. Try total commander, it has an option to change attributes.
as for e-reader. there are a lot of options. I followed the link in thepost above and the only thing I should add is that e-reader's new page is this:
http://www.ereader.com/ereader/software/browse.htm
this is probably not the official e-reader.
there's probably an HTC e-reader app/tab on this site. I'm sure about the tab, but not sure about the app, though I remember seeing it somewhere.
[edit] tried the above reader, you have to create an account and purchase books. not what I had in mind. There's another one called Freda, it's supposedly good.

for WinMo AllReader supports the largest number of document formats, and it's really user-friendly
for Android CoolReader is the closest equivalent of the above
