Section 6: How to root stock froyo or gingerbread(This is not needed if your flashing a custom rom)
Downloads these files to PC,
Samsung drivers- http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25089906/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
Odin (computer program)- http://www.mediafire.com/?429fcpdtpckkcea
CWMALL 2.5 (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it)- http://www.mediafire.com/?6x5utoca59et7o9
"su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file (place this file on the root of your sdcard...not within any folders)- http://www.mediafire.com/?38vozx7n37u02a5
Modified stock Froyo kernel (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it). This file is only necessary if you're rooting Froyo. It's not necessary for Gingerbread- http://goo.gl/QCYxT
Instructions:
1. Install Samsung drivers on your computer.
2. Open Odin on your computer. (You may need to disable antivirus programs on your computer and/or phone for this to work properly.)
3. Power off your phone and remove the battery.
4. Plug the stock USB cord that came with your phone into a powered USB port on your computer (usually on the back of the computer).
5. Press and hold the "volume down" button on your phone, and continue to hold it while plugging the USB cord into your phone. This will put your phone into download mode. You'll see a large yellow triangle on the screen of your phone. (Let go of the volume button at this point.) You will also see one of the small boxes in Odin turn yellow, as well as "Added" appearing in the message box.
6. Click the PDA button in Odin (NOT the PHONE button) and navigate to the "CWM2.5_Voodoo.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier. This file does not include a voodoo kernel and will not perform the voodoo lagfix conversion. It's only named as such to note that it is compatible with voodoo kernels.(make sure auto reboot is unchecked, although it should be by default)
7. Click START. When this process has finished, you'll be notified in Odin (succeeded 1 / failed 0) and your phone's screen will go blank.
*** Step 8 is only for rooting Froyo. If you're rooting Gingerbread, skip Step 8 and proceed to Step 9. ***
8. Unplug your phone and click RESET in Odin. Repeat Step 5 to get the phone back into download mode and recognized by Odin. Using the PDA button, navigate to the "stock_kernel.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier, select it, and press START. You'll again be notified in Odin once this process has completed (succeeded 1 / failed 0).
9. Unplug your phone and re-insert the battery.
10. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons. While holding them, press the power button. Hold all three simultaneously until you see "SAMSUNG" appear TWICE. This will boot your phone into CWM 2.5 red recovery. If your phone boots up normally here and not into recovery, just wait for it to boot up and then power it down and try again. It may take a couple tries for you to get it right.
11. Using the volume rocker, navigate down to "Install zip from sdcard." Highlight it and press the power button to select.
12. Navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and select with the power button.
13. Navigate to the "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file that you downloaded earlier and select it. Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select.
14. When you're advised of completion, press the MENU softkey to go back to the previous CWM Recovery screen, then highlight and select "reboot system now."
*Thanks to Bhfd64 @ galaxy forums for this write up!!

Just wanted to say thanks for making the process noob-friendly.
Came from a OGDroid and Continuum so Odin was fairly new to me. Love the Rom you provided and look forward to trying new ones in the future.
really well explained, and easy to follow.
Thanks for the kind words sir!!
Great post - easy to follow. I'm ready to try flashing my first custom ROM. You say that I can use any Froyo rom. Does that mean no Gingerbread? I was thinking of trying CM7 first.
[UPDATE] Just saw your directions for a gingerbread rom at the bottom of the post. Just a suggestion - you might want to put a note in the first paragraph that gingerbread directions are on the bottom. Thanks!
Anyway, I went ahead and flashed the powerwashed rom. Works perfect!

Awesome thread, this is exactly what I needed. A quick question though, if I went back to stock using DL09 and want to get MIUI back on my phone, is it alright that im on ED05 now? Can I just flash the recovery and use ED05 for MIUI?

yes, I just put dl09 up there because a few members including myself had troubles getting on mtd roms from ed05. Go ahead and try with ed05 first, you can always odin dl09 if you have trouble. GL!!

I followed the steps to flash the system back to a factory phone.. I am about to call them and have it activated to my line on which i had a Fascinate but it found the underside of a tire doing 110 down the interstate.. * belt clip broke *
I only am worried that the phone will not activate or that the big red V will know it had been rooted and will not allow me to use the phone on their service.. Is this at all possible? Was I an UBER NOOB for flashing it back to stock? * sorry had to ask that *

How to install Google Apps custom ?

Hi, I have this ROM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQvrEH74dgI, my question is how to install the google apps (2nd link). Thanks.
Boot into recovery (power on holding the Power and Volume Down button) and in the recovery screen, select "install zip from sd".
Select internal or external storage/sd and browse to the file, select it with the power button. It'll do its thing and after, I would clean the dalvik cache and reboot.
I assume you've got a custom recovery already installed, since you've got the custom rom already installed.
I did this
Before proceeding, please keep in mind that your handset will be wiped clean of all data so make a backup of your data. Also, the steps below require your handset to be rooted with a custom recovery installed. If your handset is not rooted, I’d recommend you not to flash this ROM since its not meant for amateurs.
Step 1: Download CM9 Alpha 4 for Epic 4G from here or here. Also download the supplementary Google Apps package from here.
Step 2: Boot into CWM Recovery, and select the ‘Wipe data/Factory Reset’ option. Then navigate to Mounts and Storage and select the ‘format /system’ option.
Step 3: After you have formatted all the partitions on your Epic 4G, select the ‘install zip from SD card’ option, and then select the CM9 Alpha 4 zip file. Once the CM9 file has been flashed, again select the ‘install zip from SD card’ option, and this time select the Google Apps zip file package.
When the flashing process is complete, simply reboot your phone and wait for it to boot into CM9. Keep in mind that the first boot might take sometime, so please be patient.
Do NOT restore your app data backup. Doing so can lead to instabilities, and other issues. Also, please don't complain about feature X or Y not working. The ROM is in Alpha for a particular reason.

Like this, but instead of all the things it says, mine says just "Unlocked" in the upper left corner. I have tryed this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQvrEH74dgI (rom + gapps), and this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423 + this for the apps http://knowmydroid.com/blog/install-android-4-ice-cream-sandwich-cm9-on-samsung-epic-4g.

[GUIDE] How to root and update your Galaxy S to Jelly Bean

This guide shows you how to root and install a ROM.
I am NOT responsible for bricked devices or dead sd cards etc.
Hi,
Today i'm going to show you how to root and update your Galaxy S.
In this guide we flash custom kernel and rom.
But first, remember the drivers http://www.filefactory.com/file/3nhyqmo40111/n/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.zip
Now the rooting part.
1.Download Semaphore kernel http://semaphore.gr/downloads Choose the first one. (Semaphore_2.7.4.tar)
2. It may look like a zip file but it is not. So do not extract the tar file.
3. Open Odin (if you don't have it download it from http://ul.to/o2xcp01n )
4. Switch off the phone and wait for vibration. When it vibrates it is completely off
5. Make sure you have drivers.
6. Put your phone to download download mode. To do that press vol down + home + power.
7. Now your phone should be in download mode. Plug it to computer (make sure odin is still open)
8. Click PDA tab and choose Semaphore_2.7.4.tar.
9. Click start
10. Wait
11. Wait more and then there should read Success! in odin
12. Now you can disconnect the phone.
13. Finish!
Now we are ready to install a custom ROM!
First you need to download a ROM. I recommend Cyanogenmod because it is popular, it has many features and it is stable. Here's the link http://download.cyanogenmod.org/get/jenkins/49867/cm-10.2.0-galaxysmtd.zip
1. Download the ROM.
2. Put it to your phone's internal sd-card
3. Download gapps http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
4. Put it to your phone's sd-card
5. Reboot to recovery (vol up + home + power)
6. Wipe data/factory reset
7. Wipe cache
8. Advanced > wipe dalvik cache
9. Install zip from sd-card
10. Choose zip from sd-card
11. Select cm-10.2.0-galaxysmtd.zip
12. Confirm
13. Wait
14. Wait more
15. Wait even more
16. Go back
17. Don't reboot
18. Install zip from sd-card
19. Choose zip from sd-card
20. Choose gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
21. Confirm
22. Wait
23. Reboot
Now it's ready! You made it! You rooted and updated your phone. Be proud!
This is not correct guide.

Hi,
Today i'm going to show you how to root and update your Galaxy S.
In this guide we flash custom kernel and rom.
First you need to be sure that you have 2.3.6 XXJW4.
You can check it by going to settings > about phone > and there's baseband version.
If you have JW4 you can skip to rooting part.
If you don't have JW4, you need to flash it.
Installing JW4
1. You need the drivers. For 32 bit(x86) Windows http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml and for 64 bit(x64) Windows
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
2.Download the firmware http://www.hotfile.com/dl/150483619/708026d/I9000XXJW4_I9000OXAJW4_XEU.zip.html
3. Then you need extract the downloaded file I9000XXJW4_I9000OXAJW4_XEU.zip (from step 2) to any folder, you will get these 2 files:
JW4_JW4_JW4.tar
SS_DL.dll (ignore this file)
4. Download Odin which we will be using to flash XXJW4 on the phone. http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?06v1nznuk3ng7gw
5. Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC. Then switch it off. Wait 5-6 seconds for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
6. Boot into recovery. To do this, press and hold the Volume_UP + Home + Power till the screen turns on, then let them go. You will boot into recovery soon enough.
7. Then, use the volume keys to navigate and the home/power key to select options, select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm. After the data wipe is complete, remove and re-insert the battery, but don’t power it back on.
8. Put the Galaxy S in Download Mode. To do that press and hold these keys together: Volume down + Home + Power until a screen saying Download Mode comes up.
9. Open Odin (downloaded in step 4) — Odin3 v1.7.exe.
10. Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added!!” under Odin’s message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get this message, then probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve proper drivers installed.
11. Now, in Odin, click the PDA Tab, and select the file JW4_JW4_JW4.tar
12. Important! Do not touch any other button or make any other changes in Odin except selecting the required file as given in step 11.
13. Now, hit the START button to begin the flashing process. When it finishes, your phone will automatically reboot, upon which you can unplug the cable. Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin.
IMPORTANT Note: If ODIN gets stuck at some stage and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, do this — disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, turn phone on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 9. Same if you get a FAIL message in Odin.
14. Finish!
Now the rooting part.
1.Download CF-Root http://download.chainfire.eu/155/CF-Root/SGS/CF-Root-XX_OXA_JW4-v4.4-CWM3RFS.zip
2. Unzip the file and you get a tar file. It may look like a zip file but it is not. So do not extract the tar file.
3. Open Odin (if you don't have it download it from section 4 in installing part)
4. Switch off the phone and wait for vibration. When it vibrates it is completely off
5. Make sure you have drivers (JW4 installing section 1)
6. Put your phone to download download mode. To do that press vol down + home + power.
7. Now your phone should be in download mode. Plug it to computer (make sure odin is still open)
8. Click PDA tab and choose CF-Root-XX_OXA_JW4-v4.4-CWM3RFS.tar.
9. Click start
10. Wait
11. Wait more and then there should read Success! in odin
12. Now you can disconnect the phone.
13. Finish!
Now we are ready to install a custom ROM!
First you need to download a ROM. I recommend Cyanogenmod because it is popular, it has many features and it is stable. Here is link http://get.cm/get/3qH
1. Download the ROM.
2. Put it to your phone's internal sd-card
3. Download gapps http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
4. Put it to your phone's sd-card
5. Reboot to recovery (vol up + home + power)
6. Wipe data/factory reset
7. Wipe cache
8. Advanced > wipe dalvik cache
9. Install zip from sd-card
10. Choose zip from sd-card
11. Select cm-9.0.0-galaxysmtd.zip
12. Confirm
13. Wait
14. Wait more
15. Wait even more
16. Go back
17. Don't reboot
18. Install zip from sd-card
19. Choose zip from sd-card
20. Choose gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
21. Confirm
22. Wait
23. Reboot
Now it's ready! You made it! You rooted and updated your phone. Be proud!

here are the reason:
1. While installing jw4 in step 6 you have ask to boot in recovery and recovery only available when you have flashed a kernel which supports it.
2. If i already have recovery them why i should flash jw4 again and then again root it and flash the ics.
3. You have asked to put rom in internal sdcard and gapps in sdacrd... they should both be in same card else a new user might get confuse.
4. You haven't mention if user ends in bootloop what should he do?
I think this guide is just fine , go make your one if there's a problem^. Good job OP.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
I meant to write internal sd card for gapps and my sgs had stock recovery without root.
Have you ever heard about android stock recovery 3e?
And i forgot to write what to do if bootloop And fortunately nobody asked what to do if bootloop and if someone asks, i'll reply and explain what to do.

bakcup /efs
I didn't acutally read the whole thing so I don't know wether it's corret or not, but I think you should definitly advise the user to backup the /efs folder to prevent issues with IMEI/baseband.
(searched your guide for /efs and didn't find it anywhere)
Greets.

boot loop
Hi,
I followed the entire guide and after getting and "Encryption Unsuccessful" -> Reset to Factory, I got a boot loop.
Any ideas on how I could fix this?
Thanks for the guide
Nash
--
UPDATE: Fixed the boot loop but still don't know why it happened. Can you shed a light? Still on 2.3
Thanks!
Nash
Were you flashing the Rom or gapps before getting the encryption error? It's possible that the zip files are corrupted or they have some errors. Try to redownload the files.
Thanks for your reply, but i want to know if that works with my phones stock rom
CF-Root is is available for almost every Samsung SGS stock rom(maybe for every stock rom) so you just need to tell me your baseband and i'll give instructions to do that for your ROM.
What if I still have Froyo installed? Where can I find instructions to upgrade to Gingerbread?
See the ''installing JW4'' section

I have this exact problem...I have followed the instructions to the T, Now my phone is just "bootlooping". Please can you tell me what to do?
Thanks in advance
Factory reset and try flashing again.
Uhh why don't you just suggest an odin flash of Darky's rom, then a CWM flash of CM9 then CM10. That would be a lot quicker and easier to read and explain.
it's a good guide, thanks

[Q] Pacman Nightly for Motorola Atrix 2

Hiieeexx...
I am a newbie here...
I managed to root my device and want to experience Jellybean..can the following file(link for pacman nightly) be used with the steps below???
pac_edison-nightly-20131223.zip (m not allowed to post links, but it is from pacman basketbuild)
Steps:
1. Connect your device to PC using USB cable and then copy downloaded files to the SD card of your device. Important: Don’t extract any files.
2. Disconnect USB and then turn off your Motorola Atrix 2.
3. Now, boot into recovery mode. To do so, press and hold Volume Down & Power until you see the text "Fastboot" appear in the top left in corner of the screen. Then use the volume down button to scroll through all the options until you reach "Android Recovery". Pressing the volume up button will select the option. You should now see the famous Android Triangle Exclamation screen. Tap the bottom right hand corner of the screen, just above the search key and that should bring you into the main menu of the system recovery. In recovery use Volume buttons to navigate through options and Power button to select an option.
4. Perform a Nandroid backup of your existing ROM that you can restore later if this new ROM not work or you want to go back into your previous ROM. To perform a backup, select Backup and Restore, then on the next screen, select Backup again. Go back to main recovery menu after backup is complete.
5. Now, perform data wiping task. To do so, select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm your action. Wait few minutes till the data wipe is complete. Now come back to CWM recovery main menu. Select wipe cache partition and after wiping process done, select Wipe Dalvik Cache under advance option to perform Dalvik cache wiping.
6. Select install zip from sdcard, then select choose zip from sdcard. Now, locate the pac_edison-nightly-20131109.zip file that you copied earlier in Step 1 and select it by pressing Power button. Confirm installation by selecting Yes – Install _____.zip on the next screen. The ROM installation will begin.
7. Once the ROM installation process end, repeat the step 6 but choose the gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip file instead of ROM zip to install the Google apps package.
8. When installation is completed, go back to the main recovery menu and select reboot system now to reboot your Motorola Atrix 2 and boot up into customized Android 4.3.1 Jelly Bean ROM PAC-man. The first boot will take time, so be patient!
9. Returning to Previous ROM: To go back to your previous ROM, boot into recovery, select backup and restore then restore your previous ROM by selecting it from the list.
And next thing i wanted to ask is that since it's a custom version, how they are different from original one, and does it allow updates from playstore?
please help....
Yes the installation of the nightly is the same as the description above if you are currently on a stock or other ROM.
Check out the ROM features in the Feature Development forum.
If you flash the full gapps package, all PlayStore features will work as normal

Not Registered on network

So i got the Not Registered on network problem on my GT-I9301I. I tried to use this guide(It's a guide for S3)(i can't post links yet):
XXUGMK6 Modem.zip (Click here)
XXUGMK6 Kernel.zip (Click here)
Download and copy the files in Phone’s internal storage. The files must be in .zip format.
Pr-requisites:
As usual, creating backup is the first priority:
Create backup of apps, music and other stuff.
Create backup of your text messages and contacts.
Enable USB debugging in Settings under the Developer Options.
Your device should be rooted and should have ClockworkMod (CWM) installed in it. (Click here, ignore the title. works with all Android versions.)
And lastly, check your battery, it should be almost 70% charged.
Steps to solve “not registered on network” issue on Galaxy S3 I9300:
Turn the device off and reboot in recovery mode. Press and hold volume up+power+menu button until device enters in recovery mode.
1)When in recovery mode, go straight to “install zip from sdcard” and select” chose zip from sdcard. Select XXUGMK6 Kernel.zip and confirm the installation. wait until installation completes.
2)Similarly, again go to ” select zip from sdcard” and chose XXUGMK6 Modem.zip already copied in internal storage and proceed with “Yes” to install it.
After both above patches have been installed, reboot the device in normal mode. As soon as device reboots, it will get registered to network and IMEI number will be restored. You are now good to go for making calls and sending text messages. If you have any queries, feel free to comment below, we will solve the issues.
When i got to these steps:
1)When in recovery mode, go straight to “install zip from sdcard” and select” chose zip from sdcard. Select XXUGMK6 Kernel.zip and confirm the installation. wait until installation completes.
2)Similarly, again go to ” select zip from sdcard” and chose XXUGMK6 Modem.zip already copied in internal storage and proceed with “Yes” to install it.
I got the status 7 error and I don't know what to do now.If anyone can help me i would be grateful.
