4.2.2. update stuck on rebooting now - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm on stock but with root. My phone doesn't reboot after the OTA update. Is this because I'm rooted?
Just to clarify - it's the system update app that doesn't work. It counts down to 0, then... nothing. Phone is usable, the updater doesn't reboot to update.

Same happened to mine (not rooted) I had to flash back to 4.2.1 and wipe data/cache to get my phone to start up. Then it ran the system update again and got stuck in the same loop. I'm sticking with 4.2.1 for now.

Just flash the whole 4.2.2 rom from here https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/occam-jdq39-factory-345dc199.tgz and reroot.

I did that, and go the same loop as when I did the OTA; I had to go find an archive of the 4.2.1 ROM and flash that to get it to start up (even flashing many times and wiping user/cache).
I'm going to try sideloading the 4.2.2 update when I have time

Thanks, I'll try that zip. Just to clarify - my phone isn't even installing the update. It's not stuck on the black Reboot screen, it's stuck on the countdown screen where you tap REBOOT & INSTALL. So essentially the phone is usable.. the updater just doesn't seem to work

That's not where mine is stuck, mine won't boot past the X logo

My Nexus 7 won't go past the "rebooting now" too. The tablet is usable but it never finishes the update. I have power cycled and started over but no luck. Is there a way to clear the update cache so it re-downloads the update?

Hiya! Did you ever find an answer?
I'm on 4.2.2 stock system for sph-l720, rooted, used triangle away and tried to get update 4.3 to install.
***Do I need to unroot to get samsung/sprint updates? The update keeps appearing but all progress from "android system update" stops after download verified, then the "rebooting now" step goes forever. Like OP, phone works fine, just wanted to update so I get best of newer apps, then back to customizing :fingers-crossed:

After 4.3 update, phone reboots whenever i log in

The phone received the OTA update this afternoon. After it was updated, every time I try to swipe in at the lock screen, the phone reboots. Based on the lock screen, I can see the phone works just fine. There's notifications, I can scroll to the lock screen widgets and I can even answer phone calls.
The phone was stock/rooted prior to the update. What to do?
Same. Update seems to have finished, bootloops after inputting user password to unlock screen. It's a short boot right back to the password screen again.
Was stock, rooted, unlocked, 4.3 was OTA update

I was having miscellaneous issues after the 4.3 update as well. I'm starting to think that some of these people who insist on un-rooting your phone prior to system updates might have made a good point. I don't use a lock screen, but I couldn't uninstall any applications or the phone would reboot. Even trying to modify some of the settings would force reboot as well.
I ended up giving up on it and wiping it / flashing 4.3 stock. If anyone is reading this and hasn't updated to 4.3 yet, I would suggest unrooting your phone, but keeping an unlocked bootloader before updating (the update will break root anyway... and OTA Rootkeeper doesn't work). To get root back use TWRP to load SuperSU and you should be back in business.

I got really lucky somehow, in getting the phone to work and managing to keep my data.
I don't remember every step in order, as I'm sure lots of them didn't do anything, but eventually I just reflashed every part of the factory images EXCEPT userdata.img as I (correctly?) figured that would erase my ****.
Wiped cache a few times from recovery as well.
Had a couple scares - at one point the LED turned RED during a couple bootup attempts.
First time after the 3rd round of flashing (including system.img) it would not boost past the X. Had to wipe cache in recovery again.

[Q] URGENT Please help.

I was using my rooted nexus 4 with bootloader locked and stock recovery and my phone notified me that I was due for a system update, even though I was already running Android 4.3. I thought this may be a supersmall release with minor bugfixes as the file was only 1.8MB. I pressed restart and install and the phone restarted and showed an Android lying down with a exclamation mark on top, like you see in recovery, except it said "error" beneath the Android. The phone restarted in about 10 seconds and said "Android is Upgrading. Optimizing apps 1 of 88" and so on.
It is working normally now and not prompting to update, but I want to un-root bcuz I am not enjoying root and I want to flash the factory image of Android 4.3. Please help me unroot, solve this problem and uninstall busybox
I don't understand. How can you 'not enjoy root'.
Do you even know what root does and the options it gives you?!
Send from my Nexus 4

Nexus 4 Will Not Boot - Whatever Image is loaded

Hello,
I appreciate there are a huge number of similar questions on this forum, but I have read a lot of them and cannot find a solution to the problem I have with my wife's Nexus 4. Hoping someone will be able to help...
Standard Nexus 4 8GB, running 4.3 OTA on Vodafone UK. Not rooted, unlocked, hacked or anything.
Yesterday it failed to make calls or pick up a network, so my wife shut it down and restarted it; since then it would not get past the X boot logo.
Tried the factory reset / cache wipe steps, many times to no avail.
Let the battery run down overnight, no change this morning.
Sideloaded the OTA from 4.3. to 4.4, accepted the code but would not boot, initially stuck at "Starting Apps" after optimising apps, then after reset stuck at 4.4 Circles logo.
Installed 4.4.2 via fastboot, after unlocked the bootloader, again installed OK but would not boot, as above.
Re-installed 4.3 via fastboot, as above, will not boot.
Now currently gone back to 4.4.2 factory image, still will not boot - sits on the circles boot logo for ever.
I am sure I have tried several different iterations to the above, the furthest I have got it "Starting Apps" screen, most common is X or Circles.
Anything else I can try before giving up?
Thanks in advance.

Hmm heard of such issues in the past where nexus wont boot with 4.3 or 4.4 !! I dont know the exact reason of the problem but what I do know is a solution for the same !!
Download the Factory Image for 4.2 Jelly Bean and fastboot the same !! Mostly youll get back your phone in the working state albeit without being able to upgrade to 4.3 or 4.4 !! Have a good day ahead !! :good:
Hi,
Thanks for the reply - I have just reloaded 4.2.2 from scratch and it is working. I then tried the OTA 4.3 upgrade and it failed, as before "starting apps" for ever, reset never boots.
Returning to 4.2.2 worked again.
What is strange is that this handset worked with 4.3 for 3 or 4 weeks before the restart yesterday...
I also tried 4.3 with .48 radio but that still failed to boot.
Hopefully someone else has a clever idea or some information around how/why this occurs, as beyond there being an underlying hardware fault (all sensors seem with androsensor) it is not logical.
Thanks.

nexus 4 stuck at installing system update

my wife's nexus 4, is stock, not rooted.
she accepted the lollipop upgrade that came... and since then her phone is stuck at installing system update for past few hours.
I have tried to restart the phone by holding onto power button for a while... it restarts and then gets stuck back at installing system upgrade.
Any suggestions?

Have you taken the data backup? If so try factory data reset. Also try downloading lollipop factory images and install.
Ok.. after few more restarts. . Going to the recovery menu and more restarts. .. the system once went ahead into boot animation... and then update worked from there on.
Not sure why it did not work before or why it worked after 10+ restarts. But my wife was so glad that she did not have to loose all pics and whatsapp messages.
Thanks for ur suggestion thought.

I can't install lollipop.. Have I done something wrong?

Last month I got the update from Android 4.4.4 to Android 5.
I have had problems in the past updating an ASUS Transformer Pad 300 when the update made my device worse and ASUS stopped doing updates. This forced me to learn how to root my ASUS device and install a custom ROM.
Seeing as I got burned installing an OTA update I wanted to ROOT my Nexus 4 and back it up before completing the update to Lollipop. So I followed the instructions from Cynogen Mod Installer. The instructions sounded straight forward in that I followed the on-screen instructions. However all I managed to do was wipe my phone, and from what I can tell DID NOT install any Cynogen Mod Installer.
http://beta.download.cyanogenmod.org/install
Today I have now done two Factory Resets of my Phone to Android 4.4.4. I also get OTA update requests. Each time I try to do the update, I get a message saying that my phone needs to Reboot to continue the procedure.
The phone reboots, and I see the little android robot on his back with a progress bar. When the progress bar reaches the end, I get an error message simply saying 'error'. I then have to hold the power key till the phone shuts down. When I turn the phone on again, I never get any requests to update to Android 5.
Have I done something horribly wrong and that I will never be able to update my Nexus 4 phone?
Instead of doing the factory resets, have you tried flashing the stock images through fastboot? That might fix it.
