Hi guys, just want to get your opinions on something I'm rather struggling with....
My contract is over and I'm now in the market for something new!
However, now the question! For the last 3 months I could'nt wait to upgrade to the Note 2, but now this Xperia Z has cought my attention whole heartedly!
The options:
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (white) with 1000 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data.. No upfront handset costs on a 24 month contract for £31 a month...
Or
Sony Xperia Z (black) with 500 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data.. No upfront handset costs on a 24 month contract for £26 a month...
I use around 200 minutes a month so both are more than enough!
I'm gravitating towards the Xperia, but dont know if I'll get on with the soft buttons and I never use the S-pen, so no selling point there..
I am however a massive MIUI freak, so neither "Touchwiz" nor "Xperia" launchers will satisfy me in deciding this myself!
Which one would you choose?

the XZ is faster more update tech, XPeria always has great developer support in part due to the excellent source release from Sony, since the MI2 phone runs the same SOC I can imagine it would not take to long to get MIUI on the XZ.
if you love popsicle colors or you find viewing angles very imported it's better to get the note 2 or wait for newer Samsung devices

I had the Note for a year absolutely loved it, it was actually my second 5" phone, I was one of the first adopters of the Dell Streak 5.
Upgraded to the note 2 in november 2012, I loved that even more than the note 1, but i have been won over by the xperia z's looks, camera and waterproofing. I pre ordered from clove last week, and just sold my note 2, so the net cost to me was about £120.
If you can afford to buy a hand set out right you should, put a GiffGaff card in there, I worked out my last contract over 24 months was costing me 180 quid a year more than just getting the hand set out right and using the giff gaff £12 deal that comes with unlimted data.

Someone at work told me about GiffGaff, really worth thinking about, but spending £400 - £500 out right in one purchase seems to leave a more noticable void in your pocket than a marginal £26 a month..
on contract from Tmobile it'll work out at £600 over 2 years on contract, but if I were to buy the handset at £500 + £10 a month for 24 month it'll work out more expensive at £740 all in, so idealy the Tmobile contract is the way to go...
Nearly the same experience for me. Had the Note 1, and my contract was up. The only difference is I'm in the USA.
So, I could get the Note 2 right now, but nothing else (newer). I am waiting out the Mobile World Congress to see what pans out from all manufacturers.
I decided the Note 2 was not much of an upgrade at the on contract price ($299 from ATT). Now if there is a price drop in the next 2 weeks, I may cave in!
I'll be selling my Note 2 and pile of accessories for about $600 on ebay (going rate) to cover most of the cost of the xperia z. I'll be out of pocket about $150 bucks. The camera and water/dust proofing are the main features that sold me on this device. When i bike to work I can throw this bad boy right on my handlebars with an 'eposed' mount and not have to worry about rain, snow, or dust while still having full access to my phone. I am thinking of holding out for the C6606 for the LTE but currently use the N7100 which doesn't have LTE so I can live without it....we'll see.

I'm also coming from the Note n7000.
For me the choice was quite easy, since I can sell my Note.
Look at it this way: You pay less for a newer phone? What else is there to doubt about.
I can't say which one is better since I haven't had any of the 2 in real life.

So you're choosing the Xperia?
I also have a Note 2 (N7100) and I'm exchanging it for a Xperia Z (long story) in the last year I've had One X, S3 and Note 2.
Main reasons I'm going for XZ is camera, Sony excel in this area. Also Note 2 is slightly too big, I've got used to it but one handed use is impossible, most nights I drop it on face lol! So having a phone that I find a reasonable size I'm looking forward too!

your in a sony forum.......all of the answers are obviously going to be somewhat biased....they wouldnt be posting in this forum if they didnt plan on getting the phone....
i mean you can ask the same question in any forum and they are going to tell you their phone is the better choice...
i would just try each out and look at the development forum for each....this phone isnt even out in most places and all these people are telling you its the better choice LOL that dont make to much sense....dont let all these all these "pre-order fanboys" make up your mind......i mean just look at every person who told you to get the XZ not a single one of them own the phone haha......
thats the problem with asking these kinds of questions in a specific forum....of course the XZ is going to win in the XZ section....

Hi,
as the title says whats your opinion on whether the price of the handset will drop any time soon?
I'm stuck in my contract for another 3 months and I am getting itchy feet to go and buy this phone sim free then move over to a sim only deal come the back end of Feburary.
Will the price of this phone drop after the initial release hype or do phones tend to hold their value for a long time?
Cheers
I think not. The last flagship of HTC (the HD) dropped very slowly. A few months before the launch of HD2, the HD was still sold for 599€.
ya Touch HD pretty much never really DROPPED...
it went down just a little over the year and I really doubt HD2 is any different...
I mean in 6 months, its still going to be the best phone in the world so there is no reason to drop the price because the demand WILL BE high.
I also don't think Xperia X10 can do anything...Sony Ericsson sucks at touch screens and the xperia series have been total garbage so far.
HTC dragon is the only other enticing phone but I think it will come in late q2 of 2010.
Thanks for the info.
Now I just need to justify it to myself about spending all of that money on a phone.
Some quick calcs show that over 18 months on a sim only deal I could save £360 on my contract and get a better deal but the outlay of £470 for the phone won't please my bank manager (total cost for 18 months is £830). On the other hand I wait it out and pay around £770 for 18 month contract + phone.
Hmmm...
Hi there.
I've been lurking here for a while but I haven't posted anything until now.
I signed up for a T-Mobile G2 Touch contract on Sunday, and while the guy was going through the procedures for setting it up, he was telling me how awesome the Android OS is (which I already knew, having a G1 and all,) and he happened to mention they'll be launching a "huge update" at some point within the next few weeks.
If he's for real, this is some pretty sweet news, since it coincides with the leaked update schedule.
Strongly suggest you use your 14 day cooling off period to return the Hero and pick up a Desire instead. Infinitely better phone - don't forget that the Hero is nearly a year old now.
maybe he got a really good contract deal? the desire will be at the highest tariff possible and will probably be for 2 years.

I second that! If I was taking out a new contract now, the Desire would definitely be the way to go,... But as PulpzillA said, if your getting a deal you cant say no to with the Hero you can always sell a few months down the line.
Just make sure you put a screen protector and gel case on it on day one so you get a good re-sale value.
As for the update, your guess is as good as anyone else's,.... Hopefully we'll get it before May.
I bought mine knowing it had 1.5 on it, and am happy for now. I'm sure all bugs in the cooked ROMs will be ironed out before long, and I dont plan on keeping mine for more than 3 - 6 months.
Haha, that's true, the Desire does look way better... Having said that, I'd be paying £35 for 2 years instead of £25 for 2 years, which is a bit steep IMO.

So is that the deal you got?.... Are you in the uk then?
How many minutes etc do you get?.... Did you pay anything for the handset?
An alternative is to buy a used Hero,... and take a look at SIM only deals,.... O2's are very reasonably priced, you can either have the option of 30 days notice to cancel whenever you want,... or a 12 month contract which is £5 cheaper per month than the 1 month ones.
http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity/12_months
Have a look.
P.S,... I think Its better to get the Iphone SiM only tariff, as you can also use BT Cloud and BT Openzone Wifi points where available, just dont tell them its not for an iPhone.
P.P.S... I dont know what other networks offer as SIM only deals.
Yeah that's the deal I got.
I'm in the UK and I got 900 minutes and unlimited internet with an unlimited text booster thing, and the handset was free. It's a 24 month contract, but month-by-month I think it's not too bad for £25.
The problem is that I got it in store, and they have said because of that I don't have a 14 day right to cancellation which I would have if I got it online or over the phone.
I am from Canada and I'm with bell. I see all this people ordering phones for the price of 680$ and i can't help to ask myself if all those ppl are not on any contract. Because if you are in a 2 or 3 year contract you'll pay 200$ for the phone....So. If you are in a contract and are ordering the s3 please post your reasons please.
One of the reasons can very well be that there is a good flow of money and allows to get phones every year

Yep.. I hear ya. I just recently ran my contact out. Bought my GS2 for full price and didn't resign. Now I'm buying the GS3 with no contract. (I was considering switching to Verizon.. that's why I ran my contract out) but now I'm gonna stick around for a little bit. Oh and I happen to have the money right now, and you only live once so I'm going for it!
Though.. it wasn't easy telling my gf how much I paid

Cuz my current phone is absolutely uselessly unreliable but if i cancel my contract i will lose my unlimited data which is basically impossible to get now for the price i am paying.
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda premium
You can try getting your current contract phone unlocked, sell it, then buy the sg3 (or a newer phone in general) to replace it.
In general contracts are more expensive than their prepaid alternatives (that's the point of having them). They also ensure that you're locked-in. This is why getting something that does not have you extend your contract is preferable. At the end of the day, however, the only way to tell if it's worth it is to do the math and determine whether that's a price you're willing to pay for a $400 discount.
Youhit it right on the head.....a good flow of money allows me to buy 2 to 3 phones a year. so i bought the Note Lte, then im getting the international SGSIII, i will then switch back to LTE when the Note 2 comes out later this year I hope.

I'm in the UK on giffgaff. The network gives you payback for referrals and community help. It's paying me a fair bit this way, more than enough to cover the cost of the phone and topups
In Austria there are some really cheap bargain-contracts where you pay ~10€ per month for EVERYTHING (1gb, 1000 texts, 1000 minutes). These contracts also don't come with the obligation to stay at the network-provider for 24 months or so. The only thing: With these contracts you don't get an expensive phone cheaper, you need to buy it for the full price on the market.
But all in all you're on the cheaper side with these bargain contracts than with the normal contracts, because with normal contracts you pay about 20 to 50€ for the same service! If you calculate for 24 months, it's actually a bit cheaper when you buy the phone on the market for full price. With the advantage that you don't have any obligation to stay at this provider.
I'm in the US under AT&T, my contract is up in June. The reasons I'm getting the Int. S3 are:
- Won't be released in the US until later in the Summer
- Won't have to extend my AT&T contract
- Retain my AT&T phone upgrade discount (in case any come out I want)
- US version will be inferior to the Int. in many ways IMO (other than LTE)
- higher re-sale value
Those are the main reasons.
This is a re-post of something i posted up on another S3 thread:
yyhd said:
meeh, i dont mind waiting, but some of us have more than 1 spare phone available. others dont. so in that case, i'm right there with ya.
but on the other hand, $10 AT&T medianet is a no-brainer for me.. I'll buy an iPhone or an AT&T HOX on AT&T upgrade/contract for $199 and sell it on XDA MP or Craigslist for $600. That's $400 profit. International SGS3 is $700, less the $400 for the sold AT&T HOX. That's $300 out of pocket for an international SGS3.
Then take AT&T's 3gb data plan of $30 per month, multiply that by 24 and I get $720. VERSUS AT&T's medianet unlimited data plan for $10 per month, multiply by 24 and I get $240.
$720 minus $240 is $480. Take $480 and apply that towards the $300 you have left on the SGS3 after i've sold my AT&T HOX. I'm still out on top $180 (unless i did my math wrong, which im prone to do often lol)
This is my rational for getting an international SGS3.

I'm on Sasktel. Sasktel chooses to shaft it's user base again and again.
What's different now? Oh yeah. COMPETITION! I can pop over to Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Koodo...but that damn contract...that's the pain.
So, I figure when it comes out, I can buy either the bell OR sasktel version outright, slap it on Sasktel, and wait until next year to move.
I'm seriously debating the Expansys one though. If I pre-order a 16GB right now, it will be mine in no time at all.
That way...come September 2013, I can move, get a new phone for my wife for cheap (her needs aren't nearly the same as mine), get whatever latest greatest then, and turn around and sell my still amazing SGS3 for $400-$500 bucks, and my new contract didn't cost me a cent.
Because people don't want to be tied into contracts. In the UK 24 months seems the norm where as as few years ago 12 month contracts where widely available.
2 years is a long time, especially if the network you are on has poor signal and such. Most plans have poor amounts of data, but the likes of Three offer unlimited data for £34pm and free phone, however signal can be an issue on Three. And I myself have terrible speeds previously on Three.
So buying outright and then a sim only route does not tie you down, you can sell 12 months down the line and get half your money back if the phone value holds, it'll be worth more than say 2 years down the line. This method does work out more expensive but it's worth it if you keep updating all the time.
Im getting the international version because I think ATT is the devil reincarnated and I hear good things about T-Mobile but Im not sure I want to sign a 2year contract with them since Im already signed with Sprint. The only thing that makes me weary of pulling the trigger on the pre-order is I just ordered the Evo 4g LTE and my money is tied up with that and Im not sure if the US version is getting the 2gb of RAM like the Japanese version. Im just not sure wich I would rather have Quad Core Exynos or Duals core S4 with 2gb or Ram. Plus I plan on stepping up my international travel game this year and it would be nice to have a phone that I would be able to just pop a sim card in and no hassle.
Despite its poor software and being unlocked anyway im still keeping this current phone just for media playback.
I use it to play tunes from samba shares on a wifi harddrive between bands (i do sound) cuz its way more portable than a laptop but it means i cant really use the phone at all while im working. Bit of an oversight selling my previous one when i got this really.

Hey guys, been reading a bunch of reviews and have been wondering about which phone to get for my upgrade. Coming from a T-Mobile G2 (HTC Desire Z), I've really been struggling between all the flagships like S3, Note 2, N4, and even the new Nokia. Some facts:
- I'm on T-Mobile Classic Plan, so an N4 upgrade would cost $200
- No, I don't plan on switching from T-Mobile any time in the near future
- I'm a student, so there is WiFi in 90% of the places I go
- I intend to use the phone primarily for texting, social media, and news
- I don't game on my phone and my music library is under 50 songs
- I am very satisfied with the build quality of my current phone, I have only dropped it 1-2 times in 2 years, but would prefer a phone that can survive a fall or two
- I want a phone that is built to last the next two years before I can upgrade again
If anyone who owns an N4 can tell me if it seems like a good fit for me, I would greatly appreciate it! Reading reviews and posts about specs like AMOLED vs. LCD and benchmarks really doesn't translate into real world use for me.
It seems like a good fit for you. I would just get a case to help project the phone.
Go Nexus 4 if you want the best Android ever built...and also for Development, mods, and etc if you love flashing roms by some of the best devs on xda we have it all here...
other than that go Note 2 its a beast just like the N4 but without all the extra I posted above....
You should probably know that the price is $199 down and 20 payments of $15. The phone will cost you $499.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.
Should last 2 years easily, as Google gives updates for a full 2 years. The hardware is top notch as well, so it won't lag behind. I certainly recommend the N4

It is? Huh. I thought the down payments applied for people on the Value Plan and the Classic Plan subsidizes the phone cost so you only pay the initial down payment. Could be wrong though.
Well, for $500 bucks ($300ish if I wait a month or so I suppose) a Nexus 4 doesn't seem nearly as attractive anymore.

I have nexus 4, note ii and siii with me. To answer your questions first thing you want to decide is, are you going to do lot of flashing and rooting and tweaking on your phone? If yes then stop thinking and get nexus 4 right away. There is no better option if you wanna do that. No need to even read further. If not then i would recommend note ii. There are multiple reasons for that. 1) you said you are not going to play lot of games on your phone. Note ii and nexus 4 are similar in many aspects but gpu. Nexus 4 gpu is much much better and hence much better gaming. As gaming is not your concern it would be fine... 2) You are going to do lots of texting, social media and news. In these cases bigger screen comes in handy. Also according to some reviews note ii performs much better with html 5 benchmarks than nexus 4. Also features like pop up browser and all comes in handy. Speaking from experience. 3) You are a student. S-pen might help you a lot for taking notes and all. 4) Nexus 4 has gorgeous build quality. But great things comes with great responsibility. you have to be careful with this device with glass on both sides.
This video might help you a bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cZp6YGBEW0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I use both the phones. I have to have one working phone for my business and other reasons. And i also love to do all the rooting and flashing roms. I learnt the hard way not to do this on same phones. I love both phones for completely different reasons.
Hope this helps...
Forgot to add one thing. I am not anal about the displays and color rendering and all. I personally like note ii display. Not for colors and all. I am no professional or expert on all that. I just like bigger screen. Hehe..

Mandatory prepaid post
I think it's mandatory when someone posts a thread like this for someone to suggest they go prepaid. I guess I'm that guy. So, why not go prepaid?
On the cheapest classic plan, you're paying $70 per month for 500 minutes and 2GB of 4G data. Over two years, that's:
$70*24 + 200 = $1,880.
If you want more minutes or data, of course you're paying more.
You can do Straight Talk and get a T-Mobile SIM card and pay $45 per month. Unlimited voice, uncertain amount of data but probably at least 2GB per month. You buy the phone from Google, of course.
$45*24 + 350 = $1,430.
If you don't like Straight Talk, you can try Solavei for $49 per month or possibly the new Go Smart mobile for $45. They offer at least 4GB of high speed data per month.
And if you end up not liking their service or network, you can switch to AT&T's network any time you want.
The savings are significant enough that I'd seriously consider waiting a month or two to get my phone.

Maybe? I'm not sure what the costs boil down to in the end, but I know that my whole family (5 people) is is on the Classic Plan with my father simply adding 4 other lines to his plan. I believe additional lines have significantly lower costs, but thanks for the heads-up, I'll check out the costs.
It seems like a good fit BUT you are wasting money staying on the classic plan, you'd be better off paying $300 for the phone and switching to the $30 prepaid or straight talk.
The build quality is better than the G2 by a good margin, I have a G2 and that hinge is janky, but don't expect the N4 to survive multiple drops without a case. The N4 will be the most up to date phone for the next 2 years, that is available today, you might be looking for something else in a phone but to me that was important.
I was fully expecting to spend $650 on a phone, I was going to buy the iphone 5 off contract and still will but it'll be 6mos from now, so I could have bought any of the flagship phones right now and IMO the N4 is the best choice out of the current crop of android phones.

With tmo usually the 2nd line is cheap to add ($10 or less) but on the 3rd/4th/etc line it is usually the same $10 add on fee plus whatever the data/texting costs are (for me to add a third unl data/taxting line was going to cost ~$50 total.) I would definitely sit down with your dad and see if tmo is really giving him the best deal a lot of people still aren't taking the long view with phone contracts (sure the phone is $200 to start but it costs you an exxtra $2k over the course of 2 years.) AND tmo charges you ~15% in tax, I negated that with a 15% plan employee discount but still with prepaid you can avoid it altogether.
It seems like a good fit for you.
The G2 is pretty old.. you'll have to get used to the lack of a physical keyboard (I used to have a Nokia N97 before switching to touchscreen keyboard).
Hm, if you like flashing roms and having the ability to customize your phone, then I would say N4 is a good fit. Since you're on a classic family plan then having one additional line is just $10 more plus data (do you have family texting bundle?). If you don't mind putting more money down, then I would suggest to not buy it not from t-mobile as it's the exact same phone as what google offers, but the price is so much higher. As long as you don't mind with dealing with buying from third parties. You can either save your upgrade for when the iphone 5 comes out and perhaps resell that at a higher value, or to get something like galaxy s3 now to resell. Also, if you speak with a tmobile loyalty rep over the phone, you may be able to get a phone for less than the standard price since you'll be upgrading.
The N4 definitely has a nicer feel to it, though I don't know how well it will survive against falls due to the front and back glass. But.. you stated you rarely drop your phone so that's good .
i think jalshah05 makes some pretty good points when it comes to the note ii. i mean you get the best of both worlds or a tablet and phone. i had an s3 and it was awesome........until i accidentally dropped it face first onto concrete the day before i was about to sell it. =(
i was able to get a hold of the N4. aside from at&t not recognizing the phone officially and not getting the 4g speed i was paying (i finally switched over and get out of at&t), it's a pretty solid phone. you just have to be careful if you don't have a case since the glass could crack if dropped (some people reporting that). i guess the big thing is that you'll always have first dibs on any android updates that come out. if you like to flash different roms, i guess that won't make much of a difference.
but i'm like you. i don't game much. mainly for texting, calling, web surfing, social media, random internet apps (like looking up movies or sports scores) and i couldn't be happier.
go with Nexus 4!
I currently have the S4 on a 2 year contract taken out last May. O2 called me this morning offering me the S5 for £50 if I return my S4, they will cancel the rest of my contract and I will sign up on a new 24 month deal. The tariff remains the same except a doubling of data to 2gb.
Could people who moved from the S4 to the S5 let me know if this is worth it in their view? Cheers.

Strange, I can't find any semblance of a response in that post. Thanks for the reply however.

Think it through a bit and then come to the realisation that's not a bad deal.
I have done it.
I'm just a little uninspired by the S5 and how little it differs from the S4. Almost identical in size, screen the same resolution and technology. Fingerprint reader I won't use, nor the heart rate monitor. It will be a better phone of course, and the CPU and GPU is next gen in comparison. Still, for the price I can't complain.

It's a great deal, good that you went for it. Differences aren't big enough to upgrade from S4 to S5 (in my opinion of course) but for 50 quid you can't go wrong here!

Better camera+better battery+better display. These 3 alone should be worth to upgrade. If I was on s3 or s5 I would have gone for it despite having ugly back.

If anyone has an S5 already, how does it compare in terms of overheating? One of the major drawbacks of the S4 is the overheating doing pretty much anything. For example playing Minecraft results in it being uncomfortable to hold after about 3 minutes.

So you are paying £50 AND giving them your S4 while signing a new contract? How much would it cost if you didn't give them your S4 and just pay the full subsidized price? In cases like these, i'd think I'd be better off selling the S4 myself rather than it being undervalued by the carrier.

They are waiving the remainder of the contract as part of the deal, which stands at around £450. Taking the £50 one off fee into account, this means I would need to sell my S4 for £400 to be in the same position. I wouldn't have a hope in hell of selling a 12 month old phone for £50 more than you can now buy one brand new. I'm basically getting out my contract for the cost of my S4 and £50, then signing up for a better tariff on the same cost as I'm paying now.
The more I think about it, the better the deal becomes. Glad I went with it, even though the S5 doesn't fill me with excitement like the S4 did in comparison to my old S2. I never bothered with the S3.
If you did love your S4, definitely, this is what you'll look forward.
Currently in a bit of a predicament. I must admit I'm not as impressed with the S5 as I thought I would be. Or, to be more precise, I don't believe the differences between it and the S4 justify the upgrade I have taken and the additional 12 months it's going to mean before I can choose a new phone. Do I return it and go back to my S4 and original contract or do I keep it....decisions decisions.

It can get quite warm, but nothing too serious imo. Give me something to try and I will tell you the results if you like.

Decided to return the S5. Lovely phone and some great improvements on the S4 (in particular the screen and camera) although nothing to the point where I believed it was worth entering into a new 24 month contract when I have a mint condition Galaxy S4 on my hands.
A bit of an issue returning it though, as the previous 24 month contract I was 12 months into has already been cancelled and O2 no longer do combined phone/call plan contracts. So the best they could do is put me on their maximum call plan only contract for the remainder of my previous 12 months. This is unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 8gb of data for £28 a month (old plan was 1gb of data). So a much better tariff for £10 a month less than I was paying.
I will look at the new Snapdragon 805/810 devices next May when my contract ends.
