[Q] Symbolic linking to public cloud folders - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to search the forums first so apologies if this was already asked/answered.
I use box.com for cloud storage (150 gigs free!). Lets assume I have a public folder with the link https://www.box.com/s/blawblawblaw is their a way to create a folder that points to it? Im not looking to sync as I have more stuff then room on the tablet. I know I can use various file managers to view the files with but thats now what I need. A example would be a ebook. I want moon+ to be able to view the folder containing my ebooks just like it can any folder on my actualy tablet I just want it to be able to do this from the cloud instead of local storage. Same idea for audio, vg roms and such. I believe dropbox had a feature like that built in. Thanx guys

[Q] SugarSync, Dropbox, Google, oh, my!

Need get some feedback from y'all about which of the cloud synch utilities you guys prefer, and why, so I can figure out which one is for me.
I'm looking for a way to keep certain files current between my phone, laptop and desktop such as business docs (word, excel, powerpoint), appointments, contacts, and so on.
One thing that probably knocks DropBox out of contention is that the file locations for certain things (like photos) are going to be in different paths on different machines. For example, on my phone, the folder is on the card, on my laptop it's in 'My Pictures' and I also keep some images specific to clients in different places, so they don't co-mingle with my personal stuff.
Thanks!
Wow. Nobody here uses any of these services?

I use dropbox - I like the cross-platform nature of it and (although i haven't done it yet) the ability to put stuff in public folders. I don't know about any of the others. I've looked briefly into Ubuntu One (?) but I prefer dropbox.
i'm using dropbox. never try sugarsync. my friend who tried both prefer sugarsync because it provide bigger space.
I have used both on different computers around the house. I currently use droppedboxx, which is an unfinished but still usable windows mobile version of dropbox.
It is my experience that you get more data storage with sugarsync.
I like DropBox better because I can stream my videos vs. having to DL them with SugarSync.
Dropbox all the way. Expecially if you buy extra space

[Q] Saving pdfs to a homescreen?

I'd like to put some PDFs on one of the homescreens on my Xoom. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right spot but it doesn't seem to have the capability built in. Could someone explain to me how to do this? I downloaded ES File Explorer and found the pdf in the download directory. I assume I can just cut and paste it to a directory and it will show up on a homescreen?

I do the same thing. We recently bought a house and everyone always as me for pictures and the floor plan. I created a pdf that I sent around, but it's useful to have it on the xoom to show people.
I have two suggestions, both of which I use:
1. Download Astro. You can then create a direct shortcut to any file including a pdf. Go to "+" --> More --> Astro. Browse to the file you want. The location depends on how you got the pdf onto the device. Since that file doesn't change, that works.
2. Use dropbox. This is good option for pdf's that change a lot. I often read weekly publications that I get in pdf. I created a direct shortcut to a dropbox folder. When I'm using my computer, I get and store pdf's there and use it as a "read later" option. Creating the dropbox folder is also in the "more" tab.
Both work for me pretty well. hope this helps.
to answer the OP android doesn't support files on the home screen like a desktop on windows or Mac

Downloading directly to Google Drive/accessing downloads

Hi there,
I was wondering how to download files (mainly pdfs from my class) directly to Google Drive or Dropbox instead of having to save the file to sd and manually move it every time. Also, is there a better way to access downloaded documents instead of having to go through settings --> --> downloads? I'm not rooted and I'm ideally looking for a non-root solution. Thanks.

Ah, I've been looking forward to the same feature, essentially just pointing Drive to a URL and let Google download it for you. But alas, I don't believe it's possible yet. I wouldn't be surprised if they implement that though.
The closest thing to it is downloading cloud print, and setting your default printer to drive. This will let you send pages and such directly to drive as PDFs, but in your case the PDFs are already created so probably not a solution for you.
As far as you accessing downloads, just download a file manager from the play store. You'll be able to see your download folder on internal storage.

I believe firefox has a plugin for that (save to Drive). the beta version runs quite well on the N10 (better than the release one...)
thank you

[OFF-TOPIC] Good-bye dropbox? 22GB+ free, file size unlim, priv file transfer

Goodbye DropBox? Hello Copy.com
Hey guys, this had a good reception on my new device's forum, I thought I'd skip back over here and share. I know a lot of us use DB to share files here and there, and this service is a lot less prohibitive. FWIW. I listed some of the features below.
Epic FTW!
Unlimited file size
15GB free to start
Additional 2GB For sending a tweet
Public/Private file sharing
Check out some of the additional features:
Multiple device compatibility –
Copy works across Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux computers and offers mobile device support for Apple iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) and Android, with Windows Mobile coming soon.
Easy file sharing without limits –
Copy allows users to upload and share files of any size, including 1080p videos and raw photographs without size limitations often found in email attachments. These shared files and folders can be sent to anyone either publicly or privately and accessed from any location or device.
More security –
Copy provides a secure alternative to some other cloud storage services. Included data verification inspects data before Copy accepts it into the user’s cloud storage. File-level ownership is verified prior to transferring anything to other devices. Copy also allows users to share files privately using Copy's built-in identify verification.
Copy lets you undelete any file right from the desktop app. And on the web, you can even see different file versions side-by-side. Try that with Dropbox.
Copy believes that you should be able to organize your files however you want. That's why Copy lets you sync any folder no matter where it is on your computer. Even external drives. You can't do that with Google Drive or Dropbox.
Ability to stream video (And audio too I think).
Thanks!
Just an update, I was doing some testing and was able to pull download speeds of around 2Mb/s from copy.com's servers. Pretty smooth

Just a reminder to not post referral links. There is a thread just for referrals in the Off-topic section of XDA.
Thanks

Sorry about that, I'll remove the link from the OP. Nm, looks like you got it . Thanks Kenny

looks cool, I'll check it out - thanks

[Q] Looking for Pushbullet-like app

I'm looking for something like this: https://www.pushbullet.com/. It requires Android 4.0 or higher, so this itself won't work, but I'd love to have a one click send-to-nook app that I can use to send stuff from my laptop without a cable (especially for pdfs). I was never able to get Gapps working, so emailing myself won't do it. Anybody know of anything similar? Thanks!
Neat idea--less cumbersome than Dropbox for that purpose. How about something like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransfer
Says it's compatible with my Nook--doesn't mean it will work. There seem to be a few similar. Google "wireless send file to android app"
Meanwhile, I need to look at that
Update: I tried the app and I like how it works...but: when I transferred a book into the internal My Files folder it did not show up in the Library, even after a refresh. Under the My Files tab it did appear but could not be read. So I tried a transfer to the My Files folder on the sdcard. That showed up in the Library right away. Not sure if the process can be tweaked, but it's worth looking at more closely. It may be worth noting that ES File Explorer has an ftp interface (news to me but I found it) but it's not as user-friendly as the WiFi Transfer app.
If you have a dropbox account you can use dropsync instead of the official app, it can sync entire directories so it works much like the desktop client.
However, it doesn't do direct over-the-wifi transfer, so perhaps that's not what you're looking for.
Try airdroid, not exactly one click but drag and drop
