Q for all-Do you back out or hit home? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The reason I'm curious is because my wife never backs out, she always hits home, and out of habit from my older androids, I always back out as to completely kill the app... She's 100 percent stock, and there's something about the way her phone feels that mine just doesn't have, like a little added smoothness.
What do you guys do, and why?
P.s. I'm using stock kernel...

Lol. I hit home, but I use the recent apps list often. If I see something open that I won't be using for a while, I fling it away. My phone is as smooth as butter.

Thanks for the reply.. I know it's kind of a goofy thread, but I'm genuinely curious as to what the majority does... Thanks

I always back out, unless it is the browser and I want to keep the page(s) up.

Try settings/ dev options/ and turn off or change to .5 for all animation scales.

Used to back out on my older phones but with the Nexus 4 I honestly don't notice any speed difference between the two, so now I just hit home most of the time.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

i do both. out of habit i back up until the end but i also just hit home at times.

I always back out. My wife hits home, and her galaxy nexus feels faster than my Galaxy Nexus sometimes. Mine is rooted, hers isn't.
Although, now that I'm on aokp, with lean kernel, my phone now always feels faster than hers. I was on cm 10.1, which felt slower than stock, sometimes.

I think i need to hit home more, and definitely use the recents key more as well... Being that I've always owned phones from the galaxy line, I wanna develop new habits. I appreciate your input guys.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

I too always back out out of habit coming from as far back as the G1. Probably always will regardless of the fact that I'm sure it doesn't matter any more. Android has grown up a lot.

im not sure if you can do this with stock but i set long press on back to completely kill the app. I use this for some apps that i dont want to run in the background but most of the time i use the home button

No its not. I've never experienced any of those problems out of the box.
Sounds like you've got a poorly behaving app running and slowing things down. Grab an app called OS Monitor or similar and see if you can see anything running up the CPU.
My NS is the snappiest, most responsive phone I've owned to date; it's even better than my Galaxy S i9000 on Froyo.

Why does this thing lock up all the time?

This device is blazing fast most of the time, but it will inexplicably lock up, completely, for a few minutes at a time for seemingly no reason. Right now it's frozen on a youtube video and I can't turn it off or use the screen. The device is also unusable really when installing apps, and will lag heavily in Google Now sometimes.
Is this just me? Or 4.2.1?
Just you. My N7 is still operating at warp speed and doesn't lock up..

Are you stock? If so I heard people saying turning off the sync for currents will help, for Google now lag I feel its performs better if you turn off the hot word in setting. But with that you can't say Google and start voice search
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I'm stock 4.2.1 and don't have those issues. I do have currents (and various other apps) disabled, so like previous response said try that. Otherwise maybe go with a factory reset.
When my gnex updated to 4.2 it's performance suffered until I factory reset, now it's been much better.

My best guess would be you have installed an app that is not compatible with 4.2.
How about posting a list of what you have installed, if you use multi-user, and if you are stock (not rooted), and we can give comments.
I agree. I'm running PA and rock solid. I was also rock solid on stock.
I've never had it lock up. I flashed a Trinity kernel once that caused sleep of death... but it was a known issue.

I have a pretty decent amount of apps installed. I'll post them in a minute, but no, I'm not multi-user, and I'm stock. I'll root and put a new rom on this thing if it's worth it, I figured it'd be fine the way it came.
btw, here are my androbench results. Are these slow?

thanks, I'll try disabling those.
Over 100 apps in total, my andronbench write speed is clearly an error so just compare read and app open macros.
My apps open much faster than yours, which I'd put down to PA ROM and kernel. Maybe your write speed is a bit slow?
Can you download "forever gone" from market and try a full fill and delete? Apparently helps reset the memory controller to improve performance.

Is it me or is the s4 laggy compared to the note 2

I have used the phone for 2 days and it just seems more laggy than the note 2. The note 2 is crispy especially when switching between apps.

Yes. I have noticed this as well. Last weekend I purchased a HTC One, the reception was very poor compared to the Note 2, also seemed to have a bit of lag. I took it back immediately.
Then, I outright bought the Galaxy S4 and am debating taking it back because of the lag. I wonder if it has something to do with 1080 vs 720 screen resolution processing?

My best guess the is the s4 software was a rush job. They didn't expect to have to use the snapdragon 600 processor and so they didn't have time to fully optomize it the best they could. The soc is more than powerful enough. However, i think with in the the next month or so an update will completely clear that up. The same thing happened to the s3.

That is true, with an update it will help regulate the system a little better. I do too remember that with the SIII i didnt have it then but i knew a few people who did have it. The lag isnt BAD but i think to much runs in the background and sucks the ram up I feel as if i need a task killer for some of the background crap. Plus with the awesome dev selection coming here and once tweaks start cracking out im sure it will be all gone
What I did was install trickstermod, change the governor from on demand to interactive, up the read ahead from 256 to 1024, change scheduler to deadline, and turn off zram.. and this thing is running like butter. And I'm getting amazing battery life

I see two settings for the CPU Governor... You just changed the one under the General section correct. Or did you also change the Governor setting under the Specific sections as well?
EDIT: NVM the one under Specific section is for the GPU... misread it the first time I looked at the settings.
This seems odd to me. I had an S3 tweaked to optimal performance, and the S4 completely stock still blazes in comparison.
I don't have a single sliver of lag, I go from app to app in a heartbeat, and my roommate has a Note 2 as well and the S4 is still smoother.
Very weird, this is one beast of a phone haha. There is literally nothing better at the moment since it came out so early in the year!
I'm sure any issues you have will disappear in a second once kernel development gets going!

What do you consider to be "lag"? The S4 does lag. That's all there is to it. Not as much as my EVO LTE does but it still does. Especially compared to the HTC One. But I'd rather have a little lag as opposed to the negatives with HTC, Sense, and the One.

I'm sure you know all about my phone.
My phone doesn't stutter in the slightest, it does not ever freeze up even for a second, everything opens and close immediately, multi tasking works flawlessly, there is literally nothing on it that doesn't work flawlessly. It has a processor that's already excessively powerful for just a phone.
As other people have said, some people may be having lag solely due to software, and the consensus is that the latest firmware updates took care of the minor issues people were having. I've had an android phone from every generation starting with the G1 and I can say that my phone, the one in my hand, does not lag at all, while all others had plenty of lag decreasing exponentially through generations.
I am running AOSP though, and not the stock TW though and have been since it came out, so I can't give a respectable opinion on the current state of the stock rom.

The S4 is a better investment. HTC is on the brink of going out of business. The S4 will receive constant updates for the next 2 years where that's always been a challenge with HTC phones.

Weird. I noticed lag on the display model at Sprint, on my brothers S4 right after he purchased his, and on mine right after purchasing my S4. My brother also claims his device doesn't lag the slightest bit but it clearly did while I was testing his out. Maybe some of us are super-human and can detect a higher FPS in the 'ol noggin. Lol. Who knows.

Keyboard lag, home page and app draw lag anyone?

Anyone here suffer the occasional keyboard lag? How about pressing a single letter will cause you to type that letter multiple times?
How about when you're flipping through your home pages or app draw you get that transition lag?
I'm getting lag way too often with my phone I'm considering it taking it back and trying out another one see if it act the same. So far my experience with this phone has been rather disappointing considering the lag.
There's even a thread here about the Play Store lag when you choose an app then it takes a few seconds for the app to pop up. I'm even getting that lag.

I have noticed that once this device hits about 400mb of free ram it starts to lag very bad at 300 its un usable, mine sits at 780 after a reboot and around 550 after about an hour, also if you dont kill the sms after say 30-40 text the keyboard gets very slow, the ram optimization on this phone is absurd and absolutely ****, this is the only thing holding this phone back from being epic

No.... But the word "bloat" is used so loosely here on Xda. Exactly what is bloat? Is bloat just an app that actually bogs down your phone or is it just an app that people don't use but the carriers force upon you?
Cause really I don't see how an app that's not running really slow down a phone with this kind of specs.

The keyboard problem has nothing do to with "bloat" and more of a problem in the keyboard itself and its odd how the phone was a monster for 2-3 weeks and now is buggy even with a factory reset, about 3 weeks is what im seeing on here when some ppl are seeing problems come up, im on att btw.

I agree. Bloat is more of the second scenario you mentioned above. It shouldn't slow the phone down at all but unfortunately carriers tend to ruin these phones more than help them out with their software doing all kinds of stuff in the background
This is why the note 3 and S4 are suffering from lag issues even though technically they shouldn't be considering what's under the hood spec wise as well

Note3 and s4 lag cuz of touch wiz has nothing to do with the amount of apps.
Here's a bit of an update:
Well I returned the original phone this morning because of all the issues I was having in the original post.
So far so good with the new phone, been playing with it for hours since I got it and everything appears silky smooth there's definitely a night and day difference even while the available RAM still seems kind of low.
I might have actually got a detective phone.... I'm recommending anyone who has any of these issues and are still return within your return policy, to just get another phone while you can.

This is exactly correct. The S4 and Note 3 lag has absolutely very little to do with bloat. It's because Touchwiz isn't even optimized for Jelly Bean yet. It's trash.

I experience little lag. Nothing major, maybe because of Nova launcher that the I use and the SwiftKey keyboard rather than stock.
Lately I have been experiencing weird issues with playstore freezing up. I read somewhere Google is experiencing problem with their service so it is probably not the phone.

weird.. had mine since launch day, rooted now, removed all bloat and i never have lag. using swiftkey though so idk about keyboard lag, but that stock keyboard seemed pretty sweet

Hangouts - Supper Laggy

Is anyone's Hangouts super laggy in the beginning when it's loading all the SMS's?
Whenever I close all my apps and start it up again, it takes like 5 seconds to load up. Maybe not too long, but obviously with the processor we have it should definitely be faster. Anybody suggest a fix if they have fixed it, or just somebody experiencing the same?
And by laggy, i mean it's just a white screen until the sms's are loaded, and then it's smooth as butter for me.
-Side note, My WIFI turns ON randomly even though I don't touch the phone.... odd.
You have to realize that no matter what kind of power you throw at it this phone is 3 version behind in android now. Optimization is the key thing here.
