N.O.V.A HD. – Next Generation Gaming with the Samsung Galaxy Tab
The 20 man (and-women!)-strong team of Samsung Mob!ler’s have each been gifted a Samsung Galaxy Tab and we’ve been putting it through its paces over the past week or so. Our first task has been to check out the gaming potential that the Galaxy Tab has to offer, and I’ve focused this post on N.O.V.A. - the outstanding 1st-person shoot ‘em up style game from Gameloft.
I must say from the outset that I framed the Galaxy Tab as a mini-computer/multi-media/internet/email/phone sort of device, i.e. not something I would play games on so much; maybe just some basic freebie stuff. However N.O.V.A has surpassed my expectations and blown my mind open to just what the Galaxy Tab can offer.
Display
With graphics and gameplay on par with (if not greater) that that of a PSP, the Galaxy Tab and N.O.V.A make quite the match. Bringing back memories of the classic N64 Goldeneye, the game comes alive on the Tab’s 7inch TFT HD display. It runs smoothly with no lagging or glitches. There’s an ominous storyline throughout the game, and you get to watch a series of videos and radio messages as you follow the story of a retired marine called back into duty following a surge of alien invasions.
Gameplay and Controls
Whilst there is a degree of repetition throughout, N.O.V.A makes for a challenging and entertaining game. The controls are intuitive, simple to grasp and really put you ‘in to’ the game. There is a virtual touchscreen analogue stick that moves you about and the direction you ‘face’ can be controlled both via the touchscreen (anywhere on the screen) AND controlled gyroscopically with the Tab’s accelerometer. This means you can look around the game environment by moving the phone up and down and literally point and shoot the bad guys. With buttons to fire, reload, throw grenades, switch weapons as well as well as a host of other interactive (and customisable) features, N.O.V.A can really suck you into the game. With the gyroscope in full action you’ll look like quite the crack –pot playing this on the train or bus, but just think how much fun you’d be having at the same time!
Extra features
There’s various little extra ‘bits’ to N.O.V.A that begin to explore just what potential gaming on the Galaxy Tab could be like. Whilst these are not fully developed, they show a lot of promise. Some of them include:
- There are mini ‘hacking’ games, which are essentially little puzzles that you work through and unlock ammo/progress in the game.
- There are some cool features where you have to interact with the environment in a really intuitive way. This could be sliding an arrow to make the lift move, or spinning/moving parts of the walls/doors to open them. I guess you have to see this live… Check out the video!!
- Multi-player mode – Connect over wifi and play death matches with strangers across the world or just play with your friends over a local network! This is an amazing facet to the game, very fun and very addictive!
Conclusion
There’s a lot of ‘wow’ factors to N.O.V.A, as I’ve advanced through the game it opens up various new tasks, weapons, and ‘missions’ from sniping to drive-by’s. I just didn’t expect this level of gaming to come from a tablet. Really impressed.
There’s still a degree of repetitiveness to the game with the same sort of ‘baddies’ appearing and attacking you in the same predictable way. It thus becomes a bit too easy sometimes. There’s a good amount of detail given to the terrain/environment, although this could easily be expanded upon and is largely wasted.
All-in-all, this is a game you just have to see in action! Better still, head down to a Mobile shop and put it through your paces yourself! You will be impressed and I just can’t wait to see what else is in store for the Samsung Galaxy Tab!

Is the version of NOVA on the tab a full version or Trial?
If it's full, that'd be annoying as it went bye-bye when I updated the firmware.

It's the full version - I also had Asphalt 5 pre-loaded and like you, i forgot to back-up when flashing and I've lost it too!
apparently it had the golf game as well, so in my haste i've lost £10 of games!
Gutted....hoping I can find a way to get them again...
i bought now the nova hd game, and im totaly dissapointed..
probably im too stupid, but is there really no option to invert the Y axis??
i mean.. WHAT THE ****, i need this, or its totaly unplayable :3
did i really waste the 5$ for nothing now?... (NO i will not learn to play non-inverted.. NEVER)
If you want the apk pm me

I have Galaxy Note (ICS) and I played some 3D heavy graphics games with this phone with zero or minimal stuttering. However, when I play most of the same game in my N7, they stutter heavily.
Games I tried:
- Gears & Guts (worst stutter)
- Dead Trigger (bad stutter)
- The Dark Knight Rises (worst stutter)
- Shadow Gun (minimal stutter)
I have NOT installed any background systems apps that takes a lot of resources to create this stuttering.
I am wondering if anyone experiences the same problem or if this just my tablet. I already did a hard reset twice and same problem persists.
Dead Trigger is the only one of those i have played and it seems to run ok but I have read A lot of comments from people in the play store saying the N7 is lagging or stuttering
Just out of interest, are you using any of the home screen rotation apps (rotation locker, ultimate rotation control etc)?
Lots of rumors that Apple are behind a HUGE campaign to try and discredit the Nexus7 in whatever way they can, which I guess means forum posts here, Play store comments claiming about lag and stuff.
I havn't seen any of this, and my Nexus7 is perfect. I think people need to make up thier own mind, rather than being influenced by Apple viral marketing campaigns.
I'm not getting any stuttering in games on mine, I played Asphalt 7 and Dead Trigger today and both played smooth and fast.

Same here. Games play flawless. Now if you have an older version of the app called rotation control, its a known fact THST app caused games to stutter. They just recently updated their app to fix this. Even says in their changelog that it was causing gaming/videonstuttering on nexus 7. With the new update for that app, they fixed it.
I have the Dark Knight Rises on mine and it plays with very minimal lag (stutter), not sure why others say its terrible as it just really hasn't been for me at all.
I had this. Rebooted it and it's not happened since

I have The Dark Knight Rises. I dont see the lag. Works fine.
from my experience, lag and stutter is purely opinionated.
i come from a PC gaming background, and i cant stand anything less than 60fps, which is why my beast is watercooled.
some games on the nexus 7 dont stay above 60fps all the time, but they run consistently more smoothly compared to on my galaxy note with factory ICS (not rooted).
however, one thing you might not be used to is the difference in screens. amoled has a very low response time (less than 1ms black to black in some applications), but IPS panels have a longer response time (6.5ms grey to grey and around 16ms black to black). to people who are sensitive to it, this can make it look like its lagging a little or ghosting. it improves a bit once the device is warm, but not by much. run a benchmark and see if the fps is similar to your note, if it is, then its mainly the difference in response time that you are perceiving as stutter.

The same here with Dark Knight Rises.
Don't play a lot of games but what I have loaded plays perfectly fine on the N7. I also have a Galaxy Note, I have the game Sleepy Jack which consistently slows down to almost a halt when a lot is happening on the screen. On my N7 it just doesn't happen at all, plays beautifully smooth. I loaded Dead Trigger after reading this post even though its not my preferred type of game & don't see any lag. Riptide GP is glorious but gets a bit boring.
In fact gaming on the N7 is a pleasure compared to the GNote (laggy, colour banding, black crush issue in dark scenes).
I'm running hotw1r3s cm10 on my note, I loaded up the games you posted on my nexus and my note, and got zero lag on either.my nexus is rooted stock

I have been playing Dead Trigger since I got my N7 on the highest settings available with no lag what so ever. I do a lot of gaming and can tell if there is "Stuttering" and let me tell you, this tablet doesn't stutter.
Well something is very strange then - if people are saying there is no frame rate issues with some of those games..
From personal experience -
Asphalt 7 drops frames all over the shop - compared to it running on a phone [it's only really smooth in the replay after the race]
Batman - does stutter if you pan the camera while moving - or in combat - or moving at speed - and the over all frame rate is low
On iphone Asphalt is very smooth - the iPad version is like butter..
I have not purchased Batman on the iPad - however reports are it's also very smooth..
I think it's a combination of things - I can see that some people may not notice - if coming from other tablets or lower spec phones.
But those two games are deff not optimised for either jelly bean or the nexus 7..
Dead Trigger - plays great - so I know it's not my tablet..

That's weird, because I just played a long session of Asphalt 7 last night on my Nexus 7 and it played as smooth as butter, the same goes for The Dark Knight Rises. I wonder if there is a program on your Nexus 7 that is causing those issues.

Well if there is - it's one of the stock ones
I only have paper land pro installed - and I bought that after the games - and noticed the low frame rate before it.
it's very odd if theres a app causing it - that Asphalt 7 looks great on the replay..
Asphalt 7 also has bad texture loading - you get weird textures that flicker as the texture loads in.. [which others have reported]
dead trigger plays great - MC3 - fine - Dark Meadows - fine
Maybe it's something silly - like 8GB tablets have faster storage memory than the 16GB [to save cost on the 16GB]
But then you have a 16?
Noticed yours is rooted though - might have something to do with it also - mines stock
it's not a really low frame rate - but compared to it running on other devices - SG3 / iPad for example - it's really noticeable.

I have a 16 GB version too. Have you tried doing a factory reset? If that doesn't work, you might check into getting Google to send you another one out, it could just be defective.

I did a reset - I did that since I was sending it back due to screen lift [which I then fixed] - reset didn't help.
Also redownloaded in case it was a 'bad' install - still same.
Noticed yours is rooted though - so maybe something to do with it?
All other games run perfectly - so cant see it being a hardware issue - MC3 / Dead Trigger / Dark Meadows and even the Tegra 3 demo 'Glowball' all ruin great
There's an ongoing thread about Asphalt 7 on both here and the gameloft forum - some have found altering the XML device file in the game - making it think it's running on a phone - think it's a SG3 - makes it look a lot better - less bright tracks, better overall 'look' the Nexus version can look really bad when compared to the phone version..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797247
frame rate is still poor though.
The game just does not run well /look good on the Tegra 3 tablets when compared to other Android devices.
And compared to the iPhone / iPad versions - this looks like it's really struggling at some points.
Guys, notice something? The games you are saying look and run great are Tegra 3 optimized. The others are Gameloft games. It is Gameloft's issue for not optimizing their ports, I mean, games.
Will either have to petition them to optimize the games or don't play them. There's another thread about someone digging into the code in Asphalt 7 and seeing it was optimized for the S3 and not N7. They used a hacked APK and used the same settings for S3 and it became noticeably better.

Gameloft games (unfortunately) treat our nexus 7 as mid-end to low-end device. This can be seen in Asphalt 7 (missing car reflections, environment looks like crap), NOVA 3 (no smoke, no particles, no "heat" from gun after shooting) and others.
I know on older phones simply installing chainfire would trick these games into thinking they are running on some high-end device; however, as chainfire does not work for us, do you guys know of any alternative way to get the full graphics we deserve?
They need to optimise for tegra. I have tried a few hings but no luck.

If you look at nova 3 for instance, I'm afraid those high end settings would slow the game to a crawl at times. Even now it gets choppy sometimes.
Like leelaa said, they seem to be completely ignoring the tegra crowd, even while all other devs are catching up and catering to this rapidly expanding platform.
I know the framerate is not perfect, but I would still like to experience the full potential of the games. Hopefully a solution will appear soon.
update: I think I managed to worsen the NOVA 3 graphics using this build.prop values:
ro.product.model=SPH-L710
ro.product.brand=samsung
ro.product.name=d2spr
ro.product.device=d2spr
any idea what are Samsung Galaxy S3 values (the exynos version)? Maybe that will enable the full graphics!
Hello there. I finally got me this wonderful tablet...I wanted something small, well built, and possibly with tegra 3, mainly for the gaming exclusives that Tegra means.
I didn't buy the tablet for gaming of course, but it is something I like in general. The first thing I tried has been Epic Citadel. The benchmark gave me solid 55fps average in high quality.
Then I tried a game that didn't really run well on my Galaxy Note 1: NOVA3 from gameloft.
I know Gameloft games are not really well programmed, at least not as solid as EA products (dead space, ME infiltrator and NFS most wanted to say a few)....I played most of them on my old Desire HD, and then on the galaxy note. Some of them would not run well on the Note. I am someone that feels a big difference between 30fps and 60fps...that's why I play on PC. I don't need 60 fps on a mobile game of course, the main point of my thread is:
how can a game like NOVA 3 stutter that way on the nexus 7? From a quad core tegra 3 processor I was expecting something much different....it runs the same way it runs on the galaxy note, PLUS it has no depth of field. I watched the introduction, on the galaxy note the soldier was totally sharp, and the background was out of focus. On the nexus 7 somehow this feature is disabled (of course no way to change it in the options).
Anyway, this is not what I was expecting from such a powerful device. I know game could have been programmed better (not even sure if it uses all the 4 cores).....but what is your opinion?
I don't need to play NOVA3 this bad...it is just a curiosity, something that I would rather have explained to me. I am also quite sure the same game would run flawless on an iphone....never seen it though, i just suppose.
I am also aware of that kind of 'lag fix', which is anyway not recommended. I am on stock rom with root permission.
YOU CAN'T
GAMELOFT CAN
optimization is bad,veeeery bad ;(
You can't fix it,every game from gameloft on Tegra 3 have 15fps ;(
I've been looking at this as my next tablet, it sounds different and I like the note taking capabilities (having been a Galaxy Note user for years). I don't really game very much if I'm being honest, but I don't like the idea of spending quite a bit of cash on a tablet that's particularly slow. I've trawled around for Geekbench 4 scores and it's coming back at around 1100 single-core and 3100 multi-core.. I can live with that, it's ~3x faster than the Nexus 7 that I'm using at the moment and compared to my Note 4 it's 10-20% faster. Compared to say the Pixel C, which was the other tablet I was considering, it's a bit slower in single-core and about the same in multi-core benches. However, that doesn't really give me much of an idea about gaming. As I already said, I don't really do much gaming, and it's unlikely that I'll do anything much more taxing than Candy Crush, but I don't want to buy something that is overly slow in the first place.
To anybody that has a Yoga Book, what games have you run on it? How has it performed and how does it stack up against any of your other devices?
Cheers in advance.

As for Windows 10 version goes:
- Hearthstone - running fine
- Terrarian - running fine
- Armello - fine on low/medium details
- Portal 2 - running fine on medium/high details
- Torchlight 2 - generally ok-ish but slows down significantly with more effects/mobs
- Mirror's Edge - slideshow even on lowest details
The issue with Windows version & games is that Halo keyboard has issues (see here) so if you are going for windows version, get external keyboard or game pad.
Cheers for that, good to get some actual real world feedback. I'm likely to go for the Android version over the Windows one, however if you can run actual 3D games that were aimed at fully fledged PCs only a few years ago, then I should hopefully be ok running Angry Birds
Anybody else tried something like Real Racing 3 or Goat Simulator or *something* that is to Android devices what Crysis was to PCs?
Hello
I just got the Android version. I have also been wondering about gaming performance. I have been looking around for some information regarding the performance. It seems that the CPU part is comparable to the Snapdragon 810 and the GPU is comparable to the Snapdragon 800. I don't think the GPU part is as bad as it sounds, because most devices using a more powerful GPU's, is also using a higher resolution. But i tried a few games out to see if it run them.
Games:
Modern Combat 5 - OK
N.O.V.A 3 - OK
Riptide GP Renegade - Ok - At default setting (High) but the game suggests lower settings. But the highest settings is made for the Nvidia Shield tv.
Limbo - OK
Colin MCRae rally 2 OK (But you get a warning about possible performance issues. But i didn't notice any)
Newer Alone - OK (It didn't show up in the Playstore, so i installed the game from my cell phone)
Lost Journey - OK
Rayman Adventures - Not OK (Stops before you can play)
Rayman Fiesta Run - OK
Rush Rally 2 - OK
Virtua Tennis (Sega) - OK
Field Runners 2 - OK
Robo Defense - OK
Sonic 4 Episode 1 - Not Ok ( Runs in slowmotion)
Sonic 4 Episode 2 -Ok
Deus Ex The Fall - OK
Crazy Taxi Classic - Not OK ( Hangs while loading)
Wings - OK
Leo's Fortune - OK
Monument Valley - OK
R-type 1 & 2 - OK
Raiden - OK
Minecraft PE - OK
Super Soccer Champs - OK
Emulators:
Amiga 500 - OK (UAE4Arm - IK+ and Pinball dreams Using the Keyboard)
Commodore 64 - OK (C64.emu)
Arcade - OK (Mame4droid 0.139 and FBA4droid - CPS 3, Neo geo and more)
Nes - OK (Nes.emu)
NEC Pcengine - OK (PCE.emu)
Sega Megadrive - OK (MD.emu)
Dreamcast - OK But not all games will run well. But that the way it is with most devices (Raicast)
Playstation 1 - OK - (EPSXE)
Snes - OK (Snes9xEX+)
GBA - Ok (My Boy)
Quake3 - OK (Q3-touch)
Doom - OK (D-touch)
PSP - OK But not all games will run well. But that the way it is with most devices (PPSSPP)
Half Life / Counter Strike - OK (Xash / CS16Client)
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
To add to the Windows 10 version, TESIV Oblivion (and by extension, Morrowind) run fine on medium settings with the view distance still far away.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...-web&utm_medium=nvidia-web&utm_content=detail
The nVidia Shield exclusive Strike Suit Zero plays remarkably well. Unfortunately the game doesn't listen to the halo keyboard, but it does have controller and touchscreen support.
Hi! I have a Lenovo Yoga book Android version and I cant run ppsspp emulator, It stopped before I can open it. How can I fix this
Try downloading and older version from official website.
I had the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition before I got the Yoga Book.
I play:
XCOM: EW Graphics are awesome compared to the Note
Star Wars: KOTOR Same as above
Block Fortress War Same as above
Hitman Sniper Same as above
Games not working right.
Block Fortress Everything is inverted
Call of Duty Strike Team It loads to the main menu but I can't get pass the campaign load screen.
I'm also hesitant between Galaxy Tab s3 and Android version of Yoga Book. I mainly read and brows plus I play Unkilled multiplayer regularly . Does the Yoga handle smoothly Unkilled, Dead Trigger 2 etc. I'm coming from the excellent Galaxy Note 2014 /still in use but now with terrible Chinese battery which somehow makes the software act strangely/ . I'm considering Yoga Book cause it will save me money for Xperia XA1. I am on the budget and trying to maximize the utility.

Yoga Book is a great replacement for the Note 10.1 2014. I had shattered the screen on my Note. It is well worth the price new, even though I got it used for half the price.
How will this tablet work for mail, browsing and social media? And compared to the Galaxy tab 3?

Having the Halo Keyboard is great. Being able to have floating windows is nice.
Can you run warframe?
I´d like to know if someone has tried on the Windows version League of Legends and Medieval II Total war, and how is the performance on those games. Thanks.
Curious if the Windows version would be able to run Minecraft mods (through Technic Launcher, Twitch, etc.) and games on Steam like Stardew Valley, Nier: Automata, DanganRonpa, etc.
Not expecting phenomenal results, but if it runs at least Stardew and light Minecraft mods relatively comfortably, then I'd be happy.

Counter Strike Source
Day of Defeat Source

Lenovo Yoga tablet on windows is a must-have device if you are always on the go and need an office machine always to be around. It is small and compact and would fit in a tiny bag. The advantage of having a windows version instead of android is because you have a fully equipped office machine and on android, you are a bit limited to the system therefore on windows you can do whatever you want to. Also, I was curious if anyone on this forum plays cs go as I do. A few hours ago I bought a legendary knife and wanted to ask if this knife is worth something if someone knows the game. Thanks in advance!
