Display goes dark when starting a call - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i read that the problem could be the screen protector so i removed it. still the same problem. as soon as i start a call, the display goes dark and cant be reactivated until the call has ended. i already reseted the phone. didnt help anything.
is the sensor dead?

Have you tried turning the screen on after you pick up?

of course i did but it doesnt work. or it just flashes randomly very fast after pressing the power button multiple times.

Do you have a screen protector on there? I had a Realook screen protector on there for a day and it kept happening. It covers the sensor so after you start the call, it goes dark immediately. Thought it was hardware problem until I remembered it was working fine before I put on a screen protector.

i removed the screen protector, as i said in my first post.

That's a common problem, its due to a bug in the proximity sensor.
Try keeping it away from your face for a few seconds and than pressing the power button to turn it on, if that doesn't work, than there is no real fix that I am aware of.

well the thing is, i never put it near my face. i always hold it in my hand and dial/call.

It could also be a faulty proximity sensor. You can get apps the check the prox. sensor. See if they're picking it up correctly.
If it seems like it's not working, you could send it in for repair.

when you start a call the display is on and will turn off when you cover the top left, I enabled power button to hang up and it didn't come on when i moved it from my ear on a long call till I pressed the power button lol,
I will have to try with swipe to wake or another way to turn display on,
you rooted?

Display goes on and off during calls

When I'm on handsfree during a call and trying to access the phones menus or programs, the screen first lights up after pressing pwr button, stays on for about 0,5sec, then goes black, then flickers on again, then off, then on again, and then off!
Sometimes I manage to get it to stay on by pressing on the screen repeatedly during the first 0,5sec. But usually I go through that whole procedure and have to repeat it until I manage to access the phone.
Anyone experienced the same thing? Only happens during call.

Same thing here, I use a BT headset. It is quite annoying.. I think it is trying to shut down the screen, because of battery saving. But I want to use the phone while speaking
Could have to do with the proximity sensor maybe?
Yeah it is to do with the proximity sensor. To solve this issue I try not to hover my finger over the top of the phone where the speakers are located (I think this is where the proximity sensor is placed).

[SOLVED] cannot hang up during call

I noticed this problem:
when i start a call, my screen become black and i cannot hang-up the call.
anyone with same problem?
another little question:
i have a time-limited data plan (40H /month) is there a way to know if my HD2/WP7 phone is connected or not? or a way to control my data connection?
thank you!
I have the same issue. If I hold the proximity sensor directly to a bright light source the screen comes back on but I'm not always near a bright light source. I've been making calls on my bluetooth headset because that has a hardware hang-up button. If someone could work out how to hook up the hd2 hang-up button this would be a massive help...
EDIT: i make some test, plese discard this post (test result in post #5)
I'm not sure about yours, but after I finish my call I just remove my phone from my ear then the screen show up . Regardless where I am (dim or bright place) the screen responds to the movement of the phone away from my ear .
ok, i make some other test.
confirmed, we have some problem with proximity sensors.
when i make a call, the screen become black. immediately, witoutn anything else.
wen i remove the phone from my ear the screen will NOT come up UNLESS the other part hang up.
for example: if the other part use an answering machine, i am able to record my message, but the screen DOES NOT comes up when i remove it from my ear.
if the other part is a friend, and HE hang up the call, my screens lights up, again, sayng "call ended". then return to the home screen.
if i'm in-call, and i expose the phone to a bright light, the screen comes back too, sowhing all in-call options (speaker activation keypad, and some other things)
Just press the normal hang up button and that should act as the power button to bring the screen back on...

during call this button doesn't do nothing.... already try with all button..
i just play with registry entries, some are interesting.
HKLM\Drivers\Builtin\Proximity
ScreenOffDebounceTime DWORD:50 (Decimal value)
ScreenOffThreshold DWORD:256 (Decimal value)
But i cannot figure how they affect screen (i try to change their value with no effect)
update:
seems i fix it!!!
after an UPGRADE (hehehe) to winMo 6.5, i realize that problem still exist.
then i remove a portion of the screen protextor and proximity sensors works again!
even if i use original HTC screen protector... :\

I've tried that already but it didn't work for me. I did have my screen replaced so I wonder if the problem started then...
Same to me... Is this a replaced screen issue?
Strange one this...the red button (bottom right of the 5 physical buttons) just brings the screen to life for me and should work I would have thought regardless if screen is replaced.
hey guys i am facing a problem too with my tmous hd2...i have dual booted it..when i make a call in android or win7 proximity sensor doesnt turn off the screen at all.....so i end calls without my knowledge and intent.....anyone facing similar issues??? anybody knows any solution???

Screen turns on while I am on the phone and my cheek turns off call. What to do?

I am sooooooo tired of this.
When I had 2.2 I had no issue, but, ever since I upgraded to Gingerbread (2.3) the screen will just turn on out of no where while I am on the phone and a lot of times my cheek will turn off the call or sometimes mute the call. It is so darn annoying.
Is there anything that can be done to fix this issue? I am sure I can't be alone with this.
Odin back to 2.2 and confirm that it is software and not your sensor that has gone bad.

My wife and I have the same phones and she compains of this too. I never have an issue with this on my phone. But, she can use my phone and have this problem. She also said she never had this problem on froyo, only after the gingerbread update.
I've tried installing several proximity sensor apps that are supposed to lock the phone when you put the phone to your ear. But not had the luck witht them that I was hoping for. The phone will lock, but the dialer stays on top of the lock screen. You are only taken to the lock screen after you hang up and the dialer goes away. Please let me know if someone has a solution like this that works!
I think the difference is how she holds the phone to here head. I've noticed her ear doesnt complete cover the proximity sensor all the way. She also likes to hold the entire phone screen tight to her cheek. I've tried to encourage her to hold the phone a little different, but she would rather that it just work for her. She also wants me to restore her phone back to froyo. I hate the idea of that.

also make sure your screen is clean. perticaly around sensor. had a problem with screen not turning off when on phone once and as soon as cleaned screen problem went away.
Just press the power button when your on a call so ths seen won't turn on

Yes, that's a good suggestion, but that wont always keep the screen off. I agree that it *should*.
To test, I call my voicemail.
Putting my finger over the proximity sensor will cause the screen to turn off. Now, lightly pressing the camera button to its half way point caused the screen to turn on. Pressing the volume buttons also turns the screen on. So, overly gripping the phone will turn on the screen.
Next test, turn off the screen with the power button. First call to VM, turn off screen with power button, screen stays off while I try to press volume button, but turns on with half press of camera button.
Seconds call, turn off screen with power button, screen turns on when pressing volume or camera button.
I continued making a few more test calls with these same mixed results. Finger over the proximity sensor always turns the screen off if it was on previously. I just can't get the screen to stay off during a call for my wife. I've tried to convince her she just needs to use a BT headset or wired one for long phone calls. She doesnt care for the solution. LOL.

I should also mention I'm on CleanGB 1.1.2 EL30 modem. This problem happened for her when she was on Sprint's stock GB rom too.

I find that the proximity sensor doesn't work well through hair. if i get a little hair in front of the sensor it would turn on and my cheek would hit end.
My proximity sensor stopped working on CM9, but works just fine on a TW rom (CleanGB). It's not a hardware issue that I assumed previously. Ditto autorotation...
Its not your phone or apps, its Gingerbread for the epic. It has done this since day one for me and others. It particularly happens when you get a text message while on a call. The only thing you can do is if you see it light up, just pull away from your face and then back to it and it will go back off.
I upgraded both our phones to Cyanogenmod 9 beta 1 and she hasn't complained about the proximity sensor problem yet. I think it's almost been 2 weeks. Otherwise, she was about to throw her phone out a window because she was so frustrated.
I've noticed the sensor is setup so there is some delay when turning the screen on and off. So, having the screen come off your face for a second or switching ears quickly, won't aways cause the screen to come back on. So far so good. Plus, I LOVE ICS. It's been a perfect daily driver!

[Q] LG g2 power button

Hey, do any of you have a problem with the power button? More specifically, when I try to wake the phone, instead of using the knock knock feature, u sometime press the power button. What happens is, the screen turns on, and then immediately after 1-2 sec turns off again. It seems that I only can turn the screen on by using knock knock

It does that when the proximity (right next to the front speaker on the top front, to the left) is covered, so it doesn't turn on in your pocket. It's a safety feature. So it has to be completly clear before you press the power button.
A bad screenprotector can cause it to happen.

Yay, proximity sensors just sometimes **** up. It used to do on my old phone. I thought they had fixed that long time ago though, hence I didn't mention that possibility.
Good you fixed it!

Same thing happens to my phone and it bugs the sh*t out of me. There better be a fix soon for this.
It's just due to the proximity sensor. Nothing to be worried about.
So how does the proximity sensor error work exactly? if it detects low light (like being in a pocket) it won't let you unlock? Wouldn't that mess up unlocking in the dark?

It's a light detector AND proximity sensor.
Uses the light for the screen light (auto brightness)
The proximity sensor checks if there is something covering the screen. (like being in your pocket)

[Q] N910G proximity sensor

When i make a call, and place the phone on my ear, the screen will go black (turned off), but when i take it away from the ears, thr screen stays off. I had to press a button like power or volume to turn on the screen.
This wasn't a problem when i first got the phone (3 months ago).
Only recently i got the problem.
Phone is stock, not rooted and still on 4.4.4
I searched the settings, but couldn't find any.
I tried *#0*# to being up the hardware test, went to sensors, waved on the sensors, and i got green screen and the phone vibrated, so i assume the hardware is working fine.
I'm guessing this got to do with software?
Please help
Anyone?
Hey...so in the test where you cover the prox sensor and it turns green and vibrates, does it stop when you lift your finger and then able to repeat that?
If so the sensor should be fine, try a restart. Pull battery out or hold power button > restart phone. If you haven't already.
When i moved my hand over the sensor, it turned green and kept vibrating. Only way to stop it was to press back on the capacitive button.
I have restarted, took battery off etc. No luck.
Any other suggestions?
