Restore backup on a different device. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I bought a 8gig n4 in November and got my new 16gig one this morning. I tried restoring the backup on the 16 gig and it was saying checksum mismatch which is what I expected. How do I edit or replace the checksum to make the new phone recognise and install the backup?
Thanks in advance.

Do you have TWRP or CWM? On TWRP you can turn off the MD5 check. I think you can find this in the settings menue

I was using CWM. I will give this a go. Thanks for the idea.

AW: Restore backup on a different device.
Gotta tell you that cwm backups are not compatible with twrp . Hope someone else has an idea for your Problem . But a fresh flash wouldnt be bad too, almost everything is replacable, else you could try pulling stuff out oft your backup.

Hello,
I've have also changed my 8Gb for a 16Gb. When i had transferred the TWRP backup between the 8 and the 16, I couldn't see it in the 16's TWRP.
My solution is to use Nexus root toolkit 1.6.2 and:
- make a backup (check system apps+data and shared data).
- backup virtual sdcard.
- backup sms call logs contacts.
Finally restore it to the 16Gb.
Maybe you could find another easy method to transfer ^^
FarF.

So TWRP worked for me. This is what I did.
1. Install TWRP on both devices.
2. On the device you want to backup go to the menu and select backup and remove the option for making an MD5. Also select a name you will remember, I chose nexus.
3. Boot back into the phone and copy the folder TWRP from your sdcard onto your desktop somewhere.
4. On the new device make a backup of any one partition, I used boot.
5. Connect your new device to computer and copy the contents of the TWRP folder into the /sdcard/TWRP/Backups/[your phones serial] so the full path will look like /sdcard/TWRP/Backups/[xxxxxxxxxxx]/nexus
6. Boot into recovery and select restore and navigate to the backup name you selected in my case [nexus]
7. Boot into system as per normal.
8. Enjoy the exact same stuff just on a bigger capacity phone.
9. If you so choose, copy all the contents from the sdcard onto your computer and then copy them to the new device
10. ???
11. Profit

Question About Titanium Backup And Nexus 7.

Okay, I have yet to get mine, but will in a day or two (the Nexus 7) lol. I wanted to know if I installed TiBuPro on my N7, and needed to do a full wipe/factory reset or whatever when I am installing a custom ROM, will the TiBuPro backup be deleted since the backups will be stored on the internal storage since there is no external SD slot? I use TiBuPro on my One V just fine since it has an external SD card, but was worried if I follow steps to flashing custom ROM's and such, since the storage is internal, and wipes wipe everything if I will lose my backups?
That's a damn good question Freak, to be on the safe side I would just do the backup and then drag & drop the sdcard/TitanuimBackup folder to a computer.

Once you understand the way nexus 7 works with storage you will understand more. Im not best person to explain. so .
As long as you do not format or delete /data/media your ti backup goo manager files roms and everything else there will still remain.. The cwm/ twrp skip erasing these directories (fake sd card so to speak) . I have installed many roms with few issues..
You can also use otg storage. Go into ti backup and set the default backup folder on a otg device.. same with twrp backup files.. Just plug in the device before you run either of the programs . with twrp to use otg for me anyway.. you have to boot into recovery . plug in the device reboot recovery and it will show up...
SO Simple answer is yes you can use TI BACKUP Just fine .. just know what to not format in recovery..

[Q] Lots of zeros - what can I do?

So I flashed a 4.2 ROM yesterday, twice because there were problems the first time.
I then found that the contents of my SD card had been placed in a folder called 0, which was also placed in a folder called 0.
I wanted to do a nandroid restore to go back to PA but there was no package in Restore. The backup was in the 0 then 0 file. I copied and pasted TWRP from there and managed the backup.
So now I have PA running again, and all is well, apart from the fact that my SD card is two folders down in 0 then in 0.
Hope this makes sense.
What can I do to get back to the proper setup?
Thanks for any help!
I'm just taking a guess here, the double 0s could be because you flashed the ROM twice.
The 0 otoh is most probably for multiuser support. User count starts from 0.
/data should have also been affected.
This should be the correct setup afaik. Tools like CWM recovery should be updated for these changes.

I guess my only solution is to flash the Nexus 7 image back and then re-root and flash my custom ROM again? Sounds like a lot of work!
Edit: The other solution I can think of is to copy and paste the contents of my SD card using my PC, and then delete the two 0 folders. Would that work?
Bump?

Give your second idea a shot, if it doesn't work then maybe doing a factory reset, wiping everything, flashing PA and restoring your apps via Titanium or whatever. Then just pick media/docs out of your SD backup. If you do need to push a factory image Wug's toolkit is great. That's my two cents, for what they're worth (2ยข).

How do I move my CWM backup to a PC?

I made a backup in CWM. When I connect my N7 to a PC, I see every other folder except my backup folder. (I am showing hidden files/folders). Is it not possible to move CWM backups off of the N7?
Great now the backup isn't there and I have no space left. (Have the 8GB N7)
They should be stored in /clockworkmod/backup

It is stored in /data/media/0/clockworkmod now. I think it ran out of room while backing up and didn't tell me. I couldn't find out what was eating up the space so I just had to wipe it.
You run out of space quickly with 8 GB. I've had an iPod touch 4g before I chose android. It was the 8 GB model. When ordering my nexus 7 I directly chose the 32 GB one..

So I have heard... Even after a fresh SlimBean install I still have 2.3GB eaten up by who knows what...
Koush is working on a version which enables you to store / restore the backup files directly on your PC.
Otherwise you can use backup tools like my A.R.T. which enables you to do the same either in recovery mode or while the system is running.

Twrp backups too big

Hello everybody. I've been flashing custom roms for a while now and I've never had this problem. I would like to make a twrp backup of my current rom and try another one, I've done this in the past but now I'm having some trouble doing it, and I'm not sure what's wrong. On my phone I have 5.5gb free, my apps total are 2.6gb and my other media in the SD card partition are about 4gb.. Now when I try to make a backup in twrp it comes out like 6gb which really to big to keep on the phone. I always remembered that all the backups I did where around 2.8gb so I don't understand what's wrong. I would like to backup my rom with apps and settings and exclude my SD card partition since even if a rom doesn't boot and I do a clean wipe doesn't get erased... Any ideas? I'm on the latest twrp...

Perhaps you should delete your old backups and choose to compress backup

TWRP doesn't support excluding things afaik, you could always make a backup of just /system with TWRP and use 'adb backup' to do your apps.
I usually use 'adb backup -all -apk -nosystem' as this works without root and will backup all user apps + data.

Backup

I hope I'm posting in the right section.
So I did a backup yesterday, installed diskusage app and noticed that the backup file has around 1.5 GB.
I kinda need some free space on my phone so I was thinking if is there any way to keep the backup file in my PC and use it with some sort of a program to push it into my phone if it goes into a bootloop or anything happens to it.
If you do a nandroid backup or a backup via adb, you get a backup file. This backup file has several GBs of size depending on your used storage. This file can be copied to your computer and restored anytime.
I know that. What I asked is this: let's say I make a backup file. I copy it in my PC, then delete it from phone.Next day my phone goes into a bootloop or.. I don't know, something happens to it and I need that backup file. What do I do?
What does the diskusage app backup? Most likely your going to have to get past the bootloop first. Then you can copy and paste it back to your device.

So I guess there is no point in keeping the backup file in my phone as long as I need the free space for something else.
