How To: UnRoot the HTC Hero/Get Back to stock - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi there,
This is a bit dated but I have a HTC Hero which am trying to return back to Orange,
I had loaded a villanrom custom ROM and have tried the steps given here to unlock and revert to stock rom
theunlockr.com/2009/10/03/how-to-unroot-the-htc-hero
After trying the steps I get a signature error? I am using the Original Orange ROM listed in the instructions but it doesnt seem to work,
Any idea of how to revert to stock?
Thanks

You could try the RUU Update, it will take you back to stock 2.1 update1 and unroot
Direct link to RUU: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Her...io_63.18.55.06P_6.35.15.11_release_signed.exe
You could also try the goldcard method if you still get signature errors which I had to do to update my Hero from 1.5 to 2.1, You need an SD Card for this to work because it requires a format

Stock Hero Problem

The problem that I am having right now is actually getting my Hero back to stock only. I recently searched the forums and found a few guides here and there to get back to Android 1.5, but the problem is that I follow those and then I try to downgrade and I get told only that I have a bootloader issue.
Now the only thing I could think of or know right now is that the bootloader is wrong. Which is keeping me from going back to original stock for the Hero.
Is there a possible way for me to fix this? I have tried many things, but not sure if any of you around here have some suggestions. One thing I wanted to ask and see if some one would have is whether you would be willing to upload your original backup for you phone.
If you were, then I assume that would possibly fix the bootloader issue.
Keep in mind I am no phone expert and I am just trying to throw out suggestions.
I hope that I can get some help!

Depends, if you never ran the 2.1 ruu then your hboot is still stock. Also, running the 1.56 ruu will flash the stock hboot (only an option if you have the older hboot already though).
If you have run the 2.1 ruu.exe then your hboot has been updated and you will be unable to run the 1.56 ruu. No fix yet, but maybe after the official 2.1 ruu is released.
Hold vol down on initial power on to get into fastboot. If you see Hboot 1.41.0000 then you have the original. 1.47.0000 is the 2.1 test rom hboot.
I flashed the leak when it was released and that caused the HBoot to upgrade. I will just wait until the official upgrade is out and for now I will be using a custom ROM.
Use damage control 2.07.2 stock if you want the closest thing to the sprint 2.1.

Go back to Stock on Hero

I just purchased a HERO 6262 GSM on ebay and looks like it is already rooted and is running FirmwareVerison: Villain5.2, Baseband version:63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18, but I want to go back to stock HTC rom. I've installed HTC Sync and downloaded two different RUU's and try to install but it fails. I've tried RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.6_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver and RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.
It acts like it is going to install the rom, but it fails. In the RUU I get error 140: Bootloader version error. What am I doing wrong? Or which Stock rom should I install.....please help. I would also like the ability to root again and go to Villain down the road.
Much thanks and all help is appreciated!
Nevermind.....I just downloaded and installed RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver without any problems. So I guess I must use this one from now on to go back to stock version. How about how to reinstall Villain 5.2? Much thanks.
Well you haven't done yourself any favours, putting an official, non-rooted ROM on, then wanting to re-root it later.
Goldcard for you methinks.
Lol
You should have read more before you messed with the phone...
You should have done android backup first.
Now
I think you have to.. root.. then load the new ROM.

why would you buy a rooted phone, just to throw some stock firmware on there to want to root it again?
*Facepalm*
Because I wanted to make sure the phone was all good and not screwed up by the previous owner......looks like I gotta use the goldcard method to root it. However, which ROM do you guys recommend?
with the ruu 2.73.405.5 you can use flashrec-20090815.apk and flash recovery image without goldcard

Seconded. That's actually the RUU I used, to downgrade to, via a gold card. So at least the OP has saved themselves the hassle of that.

Downgrade Problem!

I have searched and searched, tried every method, but I am offically stuck (I think) - I'm prepping a rooted Eris for return - i had previously been able to flash the 2.1 RUU to return to stock, but it now will not work - I guess somewhere along the lines of rooting/ROM flashing my bootloader has changed (it is now v1.49.000) - I can't get any RUU to work (get ERROR in RUU interface) - I have also tried flashing a P00IMG through HBOOT, but it also errors out (something is older than something else - forgot exactly) - I have tried flashing new HBOOT/Recovery Image through ADB per a JCASE post, but that will not work either - I've gotten older ROM's loaded that will allow for new OTA updates, but they ultimately will not work (signature issues i believe) -
So the question is, is there a method that will get me back to 2.1 "stock" & get rid of Amon Ra recovery?
Again, I have searched and tried every method I could find - I have updated my SDK - help anyone?
Ive seen people just send in rooted ones without any problem, so I dont know if they'll check. But if your worried, i would just flash a 2.1 rom that looks like the stock, cause i dont think they'll know the difference.
Do you have a Nandroid backup from when you first rooted?

Unfortunately I don't have it - you wanna loan me yours?
I'm only kind of kidding....
download unzipme.zip which jcase removed on xda from here http://androidmobileos.com/?p=14928 Inside theres dowgrade rom that you flash through custom recovery (which ever one you use). After that you just follow the instructions (adb parts). Works very well. If you will have any issues with adb part as far as flashing back to stock recovery and hboot than check your hboot version and make sure its s-off. If its not you can get it s-off with batery pull trick.
i had an issue like this where the ruu would say that my phone was disconnected and told me to connect it to the computer,i was on a froyo rom,i flashed a 2.1 rom and the ruu worked, just an fyi just incase this might help if you want to return to stock 2.1,once you run the ruu and sync with google you wiil receive the july update also.

[HOWTO]Vodafone Froyo for DEbrandend Legends

1. DOWNGRADE to 1.31 using this tutorial.
You do this by copying the RUU on your Goldcard and executing it.
2. Keep your Goldcard in, install this RUU.
Maybe other RUU files work too, I tried this one only. After successful install, check for updates on your phone, upgrade to 2.1-update1 and then again to FroYo!
It didnt work for me without step #1.
Edit: Instead of the RUU mentioned above under #2, you may install other Vodafone RUUs adapted to your country. Haven't tried them out though, but the UK Vodafone RUU seemed to work according to macnpaul.
this will give you vodaphone firmware with branded apps/etc? does the vodaphone froyo not have the CID check?
this gave me froyo with a boot screen from A1 and as far as I can tell no vodafone apps.
did you use the RUU_Legend_Vodafone_AT_GER_Mobilkom_1.31.177.3.. instead of the RUU mentioned in the tutorial or after downgrading to 1.31. as explained in the tutorial?
does this involve rooting ?
cos that tutorial seems to be for rooting :\
no, I don´t think this involves routing,
I think this changes the version number for you get no error 140 when loading an older RUU
This method does NOT involve rooting.
Do one step after the other. First you install the first ROM (non-Vodafone), then you install the second ROM and then the upgrade path to froyo is available to you. This avoids the [140] error.

HELP!!
I did exactly as described in the tutorial, i.e. downgraded my debranded Voadafone Legend from 2.05 to 1.31 and then installed the German 1.31 rom. No problems. I then used the phone to upgrade OTA to german vodafone 2.05, again no problem. Finally I then used OTA to get Froyo. The update downloaded OK and seemed to install OK. However, when the phone rebooted the touchscreen doesn't work and I can't unlock the phone to use it. I've tried rebooting several times by removing the battery and also clearing the cache and doing a factory reset - all to no avail. The phone works as a can call it but I can't answer it as tghe screen doesn't work.
As I can't get into the phone at all I can't even set debugging mode to downgrade back to something that works.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks in anicipation.

Look here, this might help... others have experienced it too, it does not seem to relate to the update method.

Yeh, I had a look at that earlier. He managed to get into the phone though so he could make changes. Mine is just stuck solid on the lock screen. I did just notice that when it is starting up the language on the lock screen goes from german to english and then back to german. Weird.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Yes I can. Will that help?
Another thing I tried that didn't help was renaming the German Froyo update file as update.zip and then installing from the SD though recovery. The full intallation seemed to happen but the screen still stays locked.
I also tried extracting firmware.zip from the update, renaming it to legeimg.zip and then puting it on the SD card. With a standard SD card fastboot says incorrect CID or something similar. With a goldcard it says no image or wrong image.
If it's of any use to anybody the Hboot version is on the phone 0.43.0001.
Probably a stupid question, I got a debranded vodafone legend with all the latests updates (apart from 2.2 obviously) and my hboot is 0.43.0001. But where can I check my rom version? Or is it 2.1 as shown under settings - software?
its something like 2.05.405.2 a little bit further down the menu.
Thanks that is what I ment. So I do need to downgrade first. Does anybody happen to have a mirror for the ruu file? Because shipped roms doesn't seem to work atm. All downloads get cut off.
Massive thanks to RunSeven
I followed the link to downgrade but used a vodafone UK rom (instead of the one mentioned) to put my Legend back to how it was before I debranded it. That allowed me to upgrade to FroYo using the OTA updates.
Obviously I now have the branding back, but I can live with that.
Worked for me!!
thanks !
Basically i'm after any advce please.
I debranded my Legend a few weeks ago (was UK Voda) its now on 2.03.405.3
I have an option ota to go to 2.05 then pressumably to froyo.
Do i give it a go, has anybody been able to get debranded to froyo via ota.
Or do i re-create a goldcard and go back to Voda 1.32 which i have downloaded ready.
If i stick with debranded and try froyo will it be any harder to go back to branded Vodafone after?
Or option 3 should i stick where i am and wait for a 2.2 RUU?

No, it won't be harder, I think. Probably the update to Froyo will fail with debranded rom, that is all.

if yes then where is the defaults wallpapers for android which i saw first time
AlphaRev/Revolutionary breaks some functions of official ROM's. So you have two ways to get back:
1) Sense Fix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156713
2) Remove AlphaRev / Revolutionary S-OFF HBoot and go back to S-ON
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160251
Both will give you back your wallpapers, initial setup wizard, and default homescreens.
but i dont have root
Then use option 2. If you don't have root, I assume you don't wish to install custom ROms and stuff anymore. Going back to S-ON doesn't need root.

Dear 3xeno
Plz Short out my problems, currently i'm on CM7 and want to switch over to original ROM
Plz suggest me simple method to roll back on same.
should i go for "RUU version" from shipedrom.com Or Directly go for this
1) Sense Fix

Or any other help will be much Appreciated.
Thanks
Sense fix is only for fixing the original ROM's wallpapers and widgets (Which don't display if you have S-OFF'ed using Revolutionary). To go back to your original ROM, you have to install the RUU, or, alternately, flash this ROM like you flashed CM7:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877977
(If you are claiming warranty, then definitely go the RUU way)
Thanks dear for fast reply !

Now you can't. If you wanted Eclair, you should have flashed an Eclair RUU when you were on CM7. To go to 2.1, you have to go the long way, get S-OFF using Revolutionary again, and then, downgrade and get back S-ON. (Basically, the entire thing of rooting again, downgrading, and unrooting)
BUT, There is an alternate method, I am listing the post, but remember, its complex:

There are a lot of ways. If you had your contacts backed up on your Google Account, then you need not save it again. Simply re-sync your phone after installing the new ROM, and it will re-add all your contacts.
Alternately, go to Contacts, Press Menu Key, Select Import/Export, then select Export to SDCard, this will create a VCF file on your SDCard with all contacts. To restore, select Import, and select this VCF File.
Lastly, there are a ton of 3rd party apps available to do this. Just perform an Android market search for "Contact Backup".
well, now i am s-off and installed cm7 again.. successfully now what ?
Now flash the Eclair RUU (WWE 1.37.405.1) and repeat the same steps to get back S-ON. Remember to use the HBoot.nb0 file from your specific RUU.
