Firs of all, excuse me for my english..
Hi, my Nexus 4 is coming (Hallelujah)...
So I have around 2 weeks to find more informations about customizing the Nexus 4.. the only thing which is interesting me (for the moment..) is to customize the Navigation Bar (waste of place ^^).
I found this which look awesome, called "PIE" : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020336
But I heard about modifying a lot of other things, such as bootloader, kernel etc... but I don't know a lot about these things... it's worth it for me to learn ? if yes, why ? I realy want a stable thing
By the way, what happen if I brick my Nexus 4 ? Google would say me to put my **** in my ass ?
Is there somewhere in the forum a good guide which say "what to do" with the Nexus 4 ?
Thanks !

Bahahaha! Best thing I've read all day.
It is very worth it to learn. The only ways to get a true hard brick that I know of are a) hardware failure, b) corrupted/improperly flashed bootloader c) corrupted/improperly flashed modem.
Avoid b and c and you'll be OK.
Pie comes with the newer builds of ParanoidAndroid. A less developed version of it is built into LMT Launcher. Both are great.

Thanks you very much for your reply, but what do you mean by "b and c" ? ^^
Edit: ahh ok sorry
I would delete this message, but it looks like I can't, so why the EDIT/DELETE button ?! xD

If your reading comprehension in English is that bad, maybe you should hold off on rooting your phone, unless you find guides in your native language. I'm being serious. Make SURE you understand the steps in the guides you follow. Don't just jump in blindly.
I listed three things that could cause a hard brick and labeled them "a," "b" and "c."
Edit: Haha. OK, good.
Hi,
He mean that you try to flash a non Nexus 4 or flash a file corruped during the download (check the md5 to avoid that) kernel (b) and radio (c).
To use PIE (included in PA or RootBox) check that to keep the status bar : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2129209
We are here to help you, just ask !

This thread is being created to explain, in short, a few common phone 'terms.' Now although there are many threads explaining the same thing they are 'thicker' and written differently. A different guide will help a different person. I think it is valid that there is more than one explanation of the same thing. If you have ANY suggestions, please leave them in post form below. I have explained this relative to the Xperia x8 and this is why it is in our territory.
Remember that this is a MINI guide. So not every term in the android language will be explained. For a more complicated guide see HERE or on the everything x8 w8 thread here. Both guides are different.
Anyway Here is a mini guide about phone terms:
A ROM stands for Read Only Memory, ususally on this site referring to the phone's internal memory where your apps are stored. It's like an operating system. (OS) When people say they're flashing a new ROM, it usually means they are installing a new 'operating system'. A custom rom may have new features different to the STOCK rom.
The term Stock usually means the version of something installed by the manufacturer. Or in other words, the stuff already on that thing.
An .APK is a Package on Android. Usually you will meet these when installing apps on your phone. This is, simply put, just a file extension, like .exe on windows.
Rooting is simply giving your phone administrators rights. No roms or anything. Once rooted you could install clockworkmod which would allow you to install a rom that would work on you STOCK kernel (the one that comes with xperia).
A kernel is a set of instructions to a phone. different kernels or custom kernels (not stock) enable you to flash some more advanced roms as not all roms will work on STOCK kernel.
Also, in most cases, different kernels allow overclock and undervolt. These things allow you to make your device run faster.
Unlocking your BootLoader is required to install a custom kernel. Unlocking a bootloader can be difficult and if done wrong, can brick your device completely.(make it useless like a brick) This is why I did not do it until a few weeks ago - because I was scared. If you do however find yourself bricked, look to my guide no further than HERE.
You flash kernels with Flashtool. But you MUST have an unlocked BootLoader to do this.
If I was to recommend a rom, I would say MiniCyanogenmod (CM for short). The developer, nAa, focuses on getting the galaxy nexus android - pure version. Check out my review on the stable ever wonderful MiniCM9 HERE.
Links to Flashtool, ROMS and other things mentioned will be in my other guides hyperlinked in the article.
Please be generous with the 'Thanks' if you appreciate my effort.
Special Thanks to I Am Nice for his consistent helpful feedback
You should better explain what kernel is. Like conection between hardware and ROM

Pls don't disrespect chris. I can tell you he knows what he's saying (he didn't get to become RT for nothing).
I admire your efforts, but please add more definitions. For example: you didn't really explain what "bootloader" means. And like chris has said, it's already explained (in morr detail) in another thread. Hopefully you'll add more jargons in the near future. Good job though.
Edit: you may want to report those users thay are stalking you.

Thankyou. After reading this again. I see that I have crossed the line on that one. Apologies to Chris and thanks to you. :fingers-crossed: I was quite tired and wasn't really paying attention. But I have typed that same line so many times that those keys on my 'board are worn out. Just a bit angry. But sorry again. No disrespect was intended.

Hey guys! forgive me for this stupid question ... I'm thinking of buying a nexus 7 arrived in Italy these days ... I decided to look at the development section to see which Rom were already available
I was amazed to see that there are two sections of development:
- Nexus 7 Android Development (for the Asus Nexus 7)
- Development Nexus 7 Original (Original development for the Nexus 7)
hardware diferences?
I don't understand what the differences are? could you explain?
sorry for my bad English ... : (
EDIT: i found this threat:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772627&page=5
but still do not understand

you tell me that the one is a section for those who want to develop a certain type of ROM (completely new), the other is for those who want to use "ready rom" (ready-made)?

Hi I'm lipka and I'm new at this forum. As you know I have the Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 2 Gb. I have a few questions for you and I hope I can get an answer but when i do not get it and will be sad . I apologize in advance to maybe stupid questions that I will ask you once, but I will mention that I've never had a phone with Android operating system, and Y is the first device I also ask for your understanding. Even in advance sorry for my bad English but I'm from Europe (Poland) and I used google translator. Okay so let's start :
1) What is this whole "rooting phone", and upload it and what is "ROM"?
2) How to change software to the "newest"? (I have XXLE1 ( i have very much lags :/) and i want to change software)
3) How to upload the whole "ROM's" to my phone?
4) What is the best kernel to choose? I ask because there are literally a lot and I do not know which one to choose
5) Which "ROM" the most speed up my phone, improve his performance and will look the best of all ? Give me your's proposites
6) Is it true that the glass front of our very mobile draws after prolonged use?
And the last one: 7) Is the two gigabyte memory card good enough to me that I need to buy better?
From the top, thanks and Hello to all, because this is my first post on this forum
Welcome to xda
Rooting is gaining acess to your phones OS and being able to change it
Update your phones firmware like this settings>about phone>Software Update or maybe use odin
As for the roms i heard hyperion is the best but you might want to install supercharger
Installing a rom is easy peasy you go in the recovery when you turn off the phonr. Ita power+volume up+home key buttons ... Hold them until the logo dissapears. And voula your in the recovery.
P.s you might want to check the sticky general section basic sgy topics

As CALIBAN666 said, test all of them. They are all used for some particular purpose or other, so you never know which one you might end up liking. Go through their features first.
And about the first post, those were stupid questions. But it dosen't matter to us as new users always come here and we welcome them. What bothers us that threads like this one are created again and again. That's why we advise new users to read the stickies of the forum and search before posting.

The advantages of root are the same as on your old device.
You can, there are a lot of tutorials around that show exactly how.
Through a custom recovery
Just disable root. Use search
Your a big boy (I suppose) use search and do some research.

Yes men, before i post this i search a find awsner´s , but in this forum are so many post´s of the same but with different awsner that i put my question here!
I wanna root my nexus 4 and try other ROM´s , but i don´t know if i after install a custom ROM and then flash the Stock again and for example, the Android 4.4 KitKat get´s release if i go check my update will be there for i update, you know what i mean ? can you awnser that for me please ?
But i will have some research, and thank you for your awsner and sorry for anything.
Just root it and play around with all the custom roms. The curiosity will eventually make you do it and if you end up not liking it u can always go back to stock.
Is there any way to change font style without rooting nexus 4? I'm really frustrated with this font style.! Please advise!

No, to install fonts you need to have access to the /system partition which you do not have unless you are rooted.
Rooting a nexus is very easy though.

Yes, you do. But with apps like titanium and carbon, you've got everything backed up. Everything else is synced with google. I don't find it too hard to do full wipes after the second time you do it.
