[Q] APN Settings for AT&T - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I have been on the phone with AT&T "technical" support trying to get the best speeds for my N4. They had no idea what APN Settings were and what they should be set at. I switched over from an S3 and was getting terrible speeds on the N4 using the APN wap.cingular and have tried various other settings. Can anyone post screenshots of their APN settings that are giving them decent/good/great network speeds? I'm currently getting speeds of 0.03 mbps down and 0.24mbps up on a supposedly better apn settings :/

i too just switched from my AT&T GS3 to the N4. I live in NYC and miss my LTE Speeds. I love the N4 but was getting the same speeds as you until i found the settings in the link to work for me. i get around 4-5 down and 1 up. see how it works for you.

[Q] help, cannot get at&t 3g internet and 4g also

Hi, I got a samsung HD LTE phone from korea.
I am using at&t in new york area. The phone and mms works well. However, there seems some issue in internet connection.
The download speed is super slow, around 15kbs. I got full bars in my phone. And it shows "G" signal(Not "E"). I have tried the different apn settings, but neither help this. Any one have same experience?
I check the spec. It's not within at&t 4g lte band. But it is under at&t 3g bands. Any idea?

[Q] A question about H+

Does the N4 show the H+ symbol, somthing racking in my head says that it doesn't have a H+ and only shows H when it is infact on H+
The second question is to any one on EE in the UK, how are your speeds? In my house when am off wifi on my GS3 i could get speeds of aroun 6-9mbs which am pretty sure was on Tmobiles old network as since i put my micro sim into my N4 i haven't been able to anything over 3mb, now i was just wandering was this because i am not connecting to their H+ network since i have not seen the H+ symbol on my phone, or isit just one of those things that i haven't been able to hit the same data rates as before, as i am on H+ its just that stock android doesn't show the H+ symbo?
Thanks for any help anyone can give

Here on T-Mobile, I only get an H, not an H+. I'm pretty sure H is the highest thing it shows, and the H does indeed signify access to their fastest network (HSPA+ 42 Mbps).
I'm pretty sure the GS3 runs on T-Mobile's HSPA+ 21 Mbps network (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). For comparison, the Galaxy Nexus also runs on HSPA+ 21 Mbps (the N4 is HSPA+ 42 Mbps). At the same locations, where I used to get about 6-8 Mbps on my Galaxy Nexus, I get between 16 and 18 Mbps on my N4.

I had a similar issue in that i was getting less than 1 Mbps on AT&T here in the US. I did a little searching and found several posts in these forums on creating an APN specific to AT&T for better speeds. It worked and now I am getting 7-10 Mbps pretty consistently now. Just do some digging on xda and not just in the N4 forums.
hope this helps
The APN settings I am using for ATT (if not mentioned, leave as-is):
Name: AT&T HSPA+
APN: phone
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: default,agps,supl,fota,dun
For MMS:
Name: Cingular MMS
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wap.cingular.com
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mms.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: mms
Your mileage may vary, here. I live in Central PA (Harrisburg) and I've never gotten good data speeds (not even with my Atrix 2 stock, which is rated at HSPA+ 21Mbps).
Edit - These settings get my phone to recognize HSPA+: 15, but data speeds are still poop in this area. I'm gonna switch to T-Mobile.

No problem. I'm on Long Island, NY (if you see that in my profile now, you're not going crazy - I just realized it wasn't included and added it )
Check in About phone > Status > Mobile network type
There it shows what type of network you are currently connected to.
The Nexus 4 won't show H+ in the notification bar. This is a CM feature. You'll see just an H or 3G
Thanks guys for all that took time to post.
I did think that stock android didnt show H+, its nice that its now confirmed.
I looked at my APN settings and they were set to orange, so i thought id check the internet to see if there any just for EE (not the 4g ones) (if anyone is interested you just have to change them to EE Internet and everywhere for the apn settings.
I then checked where i am at work and i was on HSPA 10 - then i saw it on HSPA+15 so am pretty sure everything is as it should be, and set up correctly, i will check when i get home as i know i can get speeds of 6-9mbs in my house, but i did just see 5.5mbs at work (where as early it just wasnt going above 3) so am pretty happy now.
Thanks guys

[Q] AT&T APN Help

So I called AT&T this morning to see how my data was provisioned after getting the new SIM for my Nexus 4. I was getting spotty coverage before my re-provision in Tallahassee, FL (a city that is supposed to have HSPA+) and was only seeing HSPA:10 in my phone status screen. I also downloaded the phone info app and ran a ping test...not even a single flash of HSDPA or HSPAP.
Anyway, I called and got my data re-provisioned to an iPhone 5 LTE plan since I bought an iPhone 5 with my last upgrade to unlock and sell overseas. I gave them the IMEI and they successfully moved me to an iPohne 5 LTE plan. Now I knew this wouldn't fixed my problem so I dug through the first 12 pages of this thread. Everything else was garbage anyway lol. I came across this link and added all 5 APNs to my APN list and deleted the one that was there. I did a few speed tests while on the 2nd APN (AT&T HSPA+) and got a maximum of 5.5kbps up and 1.5kbps down. I also re-ran the ping test in the phone info app and saw flashes of HSDPA and HSPAP.
Now on to my question: in my phone status screen I'm only seeing flashes of HSPA+:15 but mostly holding at HSPA:10 and although I'm seeing faster speeds, I'm sure I can see better. Is this normal? Also, I can't connect to any kind of data when I select the 3rd APN, the AT&T LTE one. Is this also normal since I'm not in an LTE market? In my phone info app I have my radio set to WCDMA preferred right now but tried changing it to LTE/CDMA/GSM to see if anything would change on APN 3 but nothing happened.
tl;dr - Are there any APNs I could try or settings I could change to cause more HSPA+:15 data access?
Thanks will be given to any and all helpful responses!

HSPA:15 is the fastest they have right now and it basically means HSPA+. HSPA:10 is standard HSPA and is used when there is no data being transfered to save on battery (which is why your icon switches between 3G and H).
As to why your speeds are slow, I'd be more likely to blame AT&T than the phone/software. They aren't exactly known for providing a lot of real-life bandwidth to their customers.
Thank you very much for your reply. That makes much more sense! I don't know why I didn't consider data band switching to save battery...cause it pops over to HSPA+ whenever I do the ping test (under load).
As long as I know that I've done everything in my power to get the fastest available speeds, I'm happy. Thanks again!!

Metro PCS and Moto G

So I went to a Metro affiliate store and purchased a sim card which they set up for my wife's Moto G (US GSM). When we left the store telephony was working flawlessly however it wasn't getting data. The store rep said that the phone will automatically get data after an hour. Me being the skeptic I started poking around and it turns out the phone only had the apn settings for Tmobile. I ended up searching the apn settings for MetroPCS which were as follows:

That's interesting. I just switched my wife over to a Moto G (US GSM) on MetroPCS via online chat. We had the same situation, calls and texts working but didn't notice until the next day that data wasn't working (because we where on our house wifi at the time). I did another online chat with MetroPCS and got the APN settings. The ones they gave me were identical to yours, except:
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
MMSC: http<dot><slash><slash>mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
(I can't post urls yet, so trade out the <dot><slash><slash> with :// )
We are in the D/FW area if that maybe matters. I wonder if maybe they are moving people to this t-mobile APN since the merger? Since changing to those APN settings though, data has been working great.

I've only seen it say 3G so far, but I did a few speed tests (only from our house though) and the data speeds were in the same ballpark as my Nexus 4 which does indicate HSPA, so I haven't been overly worried.
The US Models show 3G even though they're connected to HSPA.
Go into Settings > About Phone > Status ....and you should see its connected to HSPA.

Moto G problem?
Hi Guys,
Are any of you guys using MetroPCS and Moto G together in New York? I purchased a Moto G and having trouble connecting to MetroPCS network. It keeps saying cannot connect to preferred network, please try again later.
I reset the phone 3 times already but no luck so far. However, it picks up a TMobile SIM card right away. Do I need to do anything manually?
It was my understanding that the MetroPCS network is CDMA while the newly merged Tmobile is GSM. I'm on MetroPCS with 4G on an LG Motion and get very good data service (Central Florida). The LG has been a surprisingly good phone but I'm drooling over the Moto G but I read somewhere that in a couple of months the CDMA version would come out and I could use that on the MetroPCS 4G network. Can anyone confirm or contradict this? I have no idea what kind of data service I will get around here on Tmobile, so I would hate to get locked into that by virtue of the GSM phone. MetroPCS is very strong here and I would like to stick with their network.
Update: The Tmobile page (can't post links yet, sorry) seems to indicate that the Moto G will only operate on Tmobile's HSPA+ network in areas where 1900MHz has been converted from EDGE to HSPA+ when the specs of the Moto G are taken into consideration. If I read it correctly, the G would need to also work on 2100MHz to take advantage of those speeds on the rest of their network. I have no idea how much of their coverage is 1900MHz. The CDMA version won't work on 4G LTE from those specs so I guess using it on MetroPCS is not going to happen.
Moto G Specs
Global GSM Model:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
US GSM Model:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 1700 (AWS), 1900 MHz)
CDMA Model:
CDMA/EVDO Rev A (850, 1900 MHz)
Both GSM models require a micro SIM card.
Thanks.
MetroPCS is phasing out their CDMA devices they are going all gsm. Get the US GSM version of the phone it works great on Metro PCS. We are currently in the Orlando area for the holidays and have had no reception issues.

More or less. Install the T Mobile Visual Voicemail in the play store and it seems to work fine. The voicemail to SMS is an upgrade (extra fee) so I haven't tried that, but I do get notifications of VM, select the order to play, delete, etc.

Unfortunately, I'm on Straight Talk and I have yet to see decent speeds. I'm pretty sure they throttle the bandwidth. I know they use ATT towers, but when I had ATT directly, speeds were much faster.
I recently got on with metropcs and had a issue. Of slow speeds, turns out they need to do a refresh of your Sim after installing or it gets throttled for exceeding your 4G limit. Now your probably saying "wait the moto g doesn't support 4g". Which is what I had to explain to their dealer support, who kept insisting I used 500 megs in 2 hours just in email notifications(pre downloaded everything on my home WiFi before going into the store) but it turns out they just needed to update the device on their end.
so what I thought I'd do is, pretend to be one of those deaf mutes
It's very usefull.Good.

I can not for the life of me get this to work. The people at the metro store were predictably zero help.

Guide to get 4G LTE Total Wireless ( Verizon ) with 3G issue

First you need to make sure your APN settings are correct.
With my service I had to change that APN to tracphone.vzwentp and that got my 3G service.
After that Dial *#*#4636#*#* for phone testing
Go into * Phone information *
Then down to * Set preferred network type * and set it to * LTE/CDMA auto (PRL) *
This helped give me 4G LTE
And or you need to change the preferred network under cellular network settings to LTE/CDMA
First post so let me know if I need to change anything thanks
So apparently when I changed the band over to USA Band it gave me LTE. The calling worked for around two days and then just stopped working but I still had LTE.
Once I changed the Band back over to Cellular it gave me calling and txt back. I can switch it back and forth to get either 3G or 4G.
I'm hoping that with the new Nougat update it will fix this issue but for now if your calling and LTE work for you on USA Band more power too you.
If the Nougat update doesn't fix this issue I'm going back to Straight Talk AT&T where I had 4G LTE, Talk, and TXT
Motorola Moto G4 XT1625

I only get 5.4mbps down and 2.3mbps up so far.
I'm headed to California in two weeks where I wanted to test it.
Before when I was a Verizon customer I got 65mbps down so I'll see if it's different there too.
It's possible it is throttled. I have Net10 and using the CDMA option because Verizon has awesome signal where I live compared to att. Att did have higher speed rates on LTE but 5mpbs is more than enough for what I need and what anyone should need.
All Verizon MVNOs are throttled to ~5Mbps down, ~2Mbps up. Only Verizon Prepaid proper and Verizon Postpaid are unthrottled.
Hi there, your guide helped me get on LTE. Thank you!
United States band option is located in the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner.
So why in the world is it that these MVNOs recognize this phone straight away using the verizon network, but through VZW I can only get 3G? This is infuriating! I set up several of these for friends on prepaid networks and they all worked straight away with 4G. Finally added our son to our VZW plan so he could use his phone as an actual phone and it's stuck in 3G hell.
I'm on an MNVO using Verizon's network and it defaulted to 3G. I had to do this to get on 4G. I've lost the ability to make phone calls though, so I'm using hangouts for that function.
I can confirm that regular calling does not function on 4G LTE so like the OP, I am having to switch back and forth on Automatic and United States which is aggrivating.
I hope this helps someone:
I have LineageOS 14 nightly installed on this phone. I was going to return it because I was tired of dealing with the switch to make calls.
I figured out that my baseband wasn't the latest, so I figured one final nuclear option of flashing the stock back on to the device would potentially help this.
After a long bout with a soft bricked phone, I managed to get the phone to flash back to stock Amazon adz and then take an OTA. My baseband changed from x45R to x62R.
I then reflashed TWRP and LineageOS 14. It still didn't work but I played around with the settings and managed to get it working. You have to set the Radio Band to Automatic and then you'll get LTE data and CDMA voice. Preferred network type in Mobile network settings is LTE / CDMA. FYI The settings may reset after a reboot.
