[Q] CWM causing problems? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I remember putting CWM on my N7 but I then decided to switch because CWM caused me problems by making more and more subfolders in /0 . Has that problem been fixed or adressed? And has it happened to you? I want to hop on back to CWM because TWRP isn't doing the job for me on most things.

Twrp for me is much better than CM. Try the latest twrp. They just updated 2 days ago I think.

I haven't used CWM yet so I can't confirm nor deny what you say, but your post would be much more valuable to me (and I suppose others, too) if you could please BE SPECIFIC.
The phrase "most things" provides zero useful details.
Thanks

Well i am currently using CWM flashed using the rom manager app. Then flashed it to manually flash Cwm touch recovery. Working a-ok for me. In case it helps i am on v6.0.2.3

Flashing stock recovery with cm7 ROM

Hi guys, sorry if it is a stupid question, but am I okay to flash the stock recovery while I'm running cm7?
My battery life is horrible so I just want to try the work around that involves charging while the phone is off and we know cwm recovery doesn't work like that right now.
I would flash back to cwm 3 afterwards.

Here's a link to one of TrueBlue_Drew's =bazillion= answers to this question. His method allows you to have two versions of CW Recovery available via the Rom Manager. Since the Rom Manager does not support CW Recovery 3.x, that version is stored as "2.5.1.4". With CW 3, ROM Manager is used only for going back and forth between CW 2 and 3.
Hope this helps.

I've actually talked to TrueBlue and I came up with the idea of making the oemrecovery and renaming it, recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.1. He is supposed to be updating his guide here shortly but I just spoke with him regarding this last night.
Basically, download the oemrecovery, go to the clockwork folder on your sdcard and go clockworkmod>download>koush.tandgaming.com>recoveries. Drop the oemrecovery into that spot on the sdcard and rename it EXACTLY recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.1. Once that's done you can now go into rommanager scroll down to all clockworkmod recoveries and choose 2.5.1.1. That is now your stock recovery. you can reboot into the stock recovery, and keep the phone off to charge it. Once done, reboot the phone, go back to rommanager and click 2.5.1.4 and that will give you cwm3.xxx back. If this helps you, please hit the thanks button!
Thanks. Sorry for posting in the wrong section.
I'm aware I can flash back to 2.5.1.2, but for some reason I recall that this also went into recovery when charged. I'm probably wrong about that though .
amac, that sounds like a very elegant solution. I'll have too give that a shot.
I was really mostly concerned that not having 3.x would somehow affect the cm7 installation. But im guessing it should not and only affects ability to flash the rom.
Thanks again all. And for bearing with my ignorance!

Well i just checked, and 2.5.1.2 still turns on the phone when charging while powered off.
I've looked around but can't find it, is there a flashable stock recovery for the MT4G somewhere? I know there's an image posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843289 but this one isn't flashable. But i guess i could still manage if there isn't one out there.
Thanks again everyone.
use the oemrecovery file found on page 118 of the cm6 thread. It was posted by phateless. Sorry I would link it but the xda app doesn't let you do that.

I think I broke it

Not sure exactly what happened. I was using the tablet and all of a sudden the bottom three buttons disappeared as well as the top bar. The system kept getting force closes. I rebooted and it just sat in the reboot mode. I tried to recover from the system but that is not working. I cant seem to get the system to mount via usb now. I am in clockwork mod v5.8.0.2 and do not see an option. If I could mount it I could put an img file back on and get it to work. Any help would be great.

You could try to flash back the stock software to see if that helps? Look here for some help.
Are you running a custom ROM or anything else? ALSO, once you do manage to get everything fixed, I would upgrade your CWM to the most current version 6.0.1.0 by flashing this in the older (5.8.0.2) version.
Sounds like it might be permission related, you could try a 'fix permissions' in recovery

Permissions did not fix it. I am trying to figure out the ADB.

Just do a bunch of reading! We were all noobs once
I keep getting the message "error: cannot load 'bootloader-grouper-3.34.img' . It seems like something is wrong with the file. Is there a way I could just flash another Rom on this way or even update the clockwork mod using adb?

Did you download the nakasi file from the google site? You shouldn't have an issue with that. And you can update CWM using ADB, just check over in the Android Development section.
A lot of people have been having problems with the nexus 7, best bet is return it and get a new one

This is seriously not the advice to be giving out on the forums for a minor software issue on an unlocked and rooted tablet especially.

i'm having the same issue. how did you finally get it to work? i've redownloaded the file a bajillion times and still nothing. HELP

Which recovery do you use? CWM or TWRP?

Which do you use and why?
I would love to be able to use 4ext. But Nexus 4 seems to be on low priority now.
I'm using the stock recovery but when I need to backup or flash something I boot into CWM.

Seems easier to just have it on the phone. Are you doing this so you can get OTA updates?

I couldn't agree more, i put in a request for max to port it to this device ages ago, when my back ordered N4 eventually drops through the door, I'll get back on his case as it was without doubt the greatest recovery ever (all credit to cwm where due obviously)
4 ext, had the ability to stack multiple complex wipe, flash, restore and backup operations into one step greatly simplifying the flashing process, was also rock sold in my experience.
So until then will monitor this thread

I don't have my nexus yet but on my gs2 I'm using twrp. I had cwm touch and liked it, it worked pretty good. But I like the twrp format better and I think it's easier to navigate. Also you could name your backups on twrp unlike cwm. Last thing is cwm I usually have to wipe and flash wiping scripts like darkside for some roms and twrp you don't have to.
Using CWM at the moment but will be switching to TWRP soon once I get back home to my computer.
Edit: Oh now I see that the goo manager method is working, will be installing TWRP tonight =)

You wouldn't happen to know where we stand on getting 4ext support would you? I'd only used it a few times on my gf's phone and loved it instantly... For now I'm still stuck on CWMR, but would love to switch over!

I think he meant that there is a "wipe all (except SD)" button that includes the boot partition. It's quite useful. TWRP doesn't have that.
I used 4EXT recovery touch on my Glacier. Purchased the updater. Great recovery. Used all the same folders as cwm, too. All apps designed to work with cwm worked with it, too.
CWM works flawlessly so i see no need to switch. But originally when deciding between the two, TWRP had overheating issues so with CWM I went.

Fixed with a kernel change. I've used both. I see cwm being like iOS. It's simplicity makes it easy to maintain. The core features everyone NEEDS are there. TWRP is more feature packed, more on the bleeding edge. More features means more chances for bugs. But that's the price you pay to be on the bleeding edge.
TWRP...FTW!
The 2 reasons I use TWRP
1. Flash multiple things at once
2. Set backup name

TWRP, I'd rather use touch and CWM touch is more of a hassle to install unless you pay.
TWRP all the way for my N4!
CWM for one reason and one reason only: stability.

Huh?

Edit: I guess when there's a new version of your recovery every couple weeks using fastboot might get annoying.
CWM! The "devs" of trwp better become themers. Twrp is totally unreliable.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I've never had a single problem with TWRP, I have no idea why some people think it's unstable
My N4 is unlocked and rooted, but using factory recovery so that it installs it's own OTA's when it gets them. I have to manually update the tablets in my house and it's getting to be a hassle(and I'm lazy).

[solved]Clockworkmod Backups

Anyone having trouble making nandroid backups using clockworkmod? I'm using the latest version of clockworkmod touch and stock 4.4. I run the backup, it appears to run fine, says it's finished, but when I reboot there is no backup files. This has happened multiple times, including getting burnt by modifying a system file and then finding out my backup is non-existent. I'm used to TWRP, but someone told me it doesn't work with 4.4 so I switched.

Maybe you are looking into the wrong directory.. mine is located at Device\Data\Media\Clockworkmod\Backup.
Hope that helps!

That was it, thanks!
I guess I'm used to TWRP where it is saved under /sdcard/TWRP, plus I was thrown off by the clockworkmod folder at /sdcard/clockworkmod
I just wasted a couple hours setting everything up because I couldn't find the backup

Recovery Issues

Hey guys I'm fairly new to the droid, but not new to installing stuff and that. I've tried multiple times to install a recovery but twrp doesn't, through fast boot it says it's invalid or something. Somehow I got cwm on it but to install a new Rom I've to make a complete backup since I've heard these phones brick pretty easily. The data can't be mounted to backup And I can't backup on internal storage either.
If you guys could help me out a bit it would be great. Thanks

Which system version are you on, and which version of TWRP did you try? Where did you get the TWRP? Check this thread it has all the walkthroughs and download links needed... Side note this should be in general or q&a not in the Dev section
We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.
I'm on the stock rom 4.4, and I've already gone through the steps, as I said and understand how these things work, the cwm I'm using now installed but doesn't allow for a data backup. I read there isn't one for this phone which allows that.
