Hey guys, I bought my N7 4 days ago but it wasn't from a retail store or google play. It was from craigslist. I was fortunate enough, or I thought I was but my unit has none of the problems a lot of you guys been getting, assuming I probably got it from the new batch but that was until earlier when I was playing Soulcraft THD and I was pressing down the left side with a bit of force with my thumb and I heard the screen make that sponge/squeaky sound. There is no screen lift or anything major at all. The only other problem(minor) issue I have with my N7 is that the screen flickers at low brightness(40% and below) while it is loading an app or a website on chrome but I read that the issue could be software related so I'm not too worried about that, will just have to wait for a update.
My real question is did I make a mistake from buying it from that person on CL now that I have a problem with my N7 or do I just contact Google about the issue?
Thanks in advance guys, hope everyone is loving there N7 as much as I do!
Well, if you contact Google, they will probably refer you to Asus since you didn't buy it from the Play store. I would call Asus and just check on the warranty. If they say no, they say no. Can't hurt to call though.

I bought it brand new unopen, so I'm pretty sure it does have warranty correct?
Manufacturer warranty from Asus, not warranty from google unless you have an order number with them.

Are you able to contact the original person that bought it and ask for a copy of the receipt in case you have any issues with it?

I seem to still have their number, I will give him a text right now! Actually the seller was just a friend helping out his buddy to sell the N7. I hope he still has receipt.
Is it rooted? If it is, restore it, according to them your warranty is void'wjen you unlock the boot loader.

Nope not rooted I wanted to have it for atleast a week or two then root it.
hey guys sorry for being a complete noob at this. Almost all electronics I've ever bought has never given me a problem so I don't go through returns/rma often. I just got a copy of the receipt for my Nexus 7, its in pdf file what is the next step for me to do? It was purchased on the 29th of July at Office Max.
Why don't you just have the seller do an exchange from office Max? If that's not too much trouble.

Would it work if I go there with a printed copy of the receipt saying I bought it from a guy on criagslist? If not I will have to ask him for help.

You might as well try because you are kind of limited n options. I say it can't hurt.

okay so I called one store and they told me no I can't do it, the original buyer has to. I called another store and they said I could do it myself but they charge a 15% restocking fee...I don't want to pay for that, they are also out of stock so no point of me going there then whats my next best option?
My screen is a bit squeaky left side

I'm not sure but since Asus has a 1 year warranty on their products, I think you can get them to RMA it. you will have to pay for shipping to them though.
however I seem to recall some people saying Asus said you have to go thru Google to RMA it, so I'm not 100% positive. let me know what Asus says.
32Gig, bought in Oct, not a single issue before, but today when I want to use Google Hangout on my N7 it keeps not responding, I can hear the sound, but no image. Then I downloaded the Cam App, still no luck. Face unlock, still no image. Returned to stock, same. So I figure it's probably a hardware issue.
Never seen anyone had this issue so I post this, probably won't notice if I don't use hangout or something. Any suggestions? Should I send it to fix? Bought in Game Stop btw.

Bump, seems no one has this issue then..

If you returned to stock and it's still not working in any apps, then I'd guess it was a hardware problem.
I'm having the same issue, and i think is a hardware problem, I might buy a new camera module in the next few weeks, to test it.

Any update? I still haven't purchased the camera module. I'm no in a hurry I guess. But still curious to know what they told you or what's they did to your device.

UPDATE: I replaced the camera successfully following the "Installing Nexus 7 Front Facing Camera" guide from ifixit(dot)com. In case anyone has the same problem and is out of warranty, the procedure is very quick and easy, the camera module can be found cheap on ebay.

Well I just sent mine to ASUS and they did it for free, just waited 2 weeks. Congratulations on successfully done it on your own.
Please see attachment, it is a screenshot similar to the problem I have.
A part of the screen is not touch-respondsive. It only happened recently, never had this problem before.
Possible to fix? I have trouble unlocking the 9 dots pattern everytime I turn on the phone because of this problem.
Please help, thanks.
Never mind, flashed a different kernal and its working now.
edit: Wait, no it's still there.
update: I wiped everything and installed factory 4.2.2 patch (occam-jdq39-factory-345dc199.tgz) but still cannot fix this problem. Please help!
update: Tried this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027476 still not working :crying:
update: This also not working for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163924... possible hardware issue?
verdict: I will live with this for now, after 1 day and still can't fix it then I will contact google hopefully for a replacement.
bump
I am having the exact same issue. That almost makes me think it could be a software issue but you said you already did a factory reset.
The weird thing is that it looks like the same part of the screen. Its a horizontal section in the very middle.
My best conclusions are that its the digitizer. It just started happening out of no where though. Very frustrating. Makes it impossible to hit the send button on the stock messaging app without minimizing the keyboard! I take excellent care of my Nexus 4. It has a case and it hasn't been dropped. It hardly has a scratch on it! Its a month old.

Strongertyer I can feel your frustration.
Here's mine (the one in my op was found from google). Mine is a bit lower, it blocks the top half of the qwer line on the keyboard and the yes/no buttons on prompt windows.
I can still type qwer just fine by pressing the bottom half of the keys, but for the the prompts I have to tilt and rotate the screen every time so the buttons aren't under the "dead zone".
Strongtyer are you also thinking of sending the phone back to Google?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Just talked to support and they seemed helpful. However, his first suggestion was to do a factory reset of course. He said if that didn't work then I could send my phone back for a replacement. Did a factory reset and still the same issue. Looks like I'll be calling again tomorrow.
I guess the plus side is that they send brand new phones and not just refurbished ones.
Any luck on your end?

I gave up fixing it already as you can see in my 2nd post and I believe it is not possible to fix it other than having the whole screen replaced, so I asked directly for a replacement under warranty. Then after a brief moment google emailed me a set of instructions for packing the phone.
So on Sunday evening I booked the courier, printed the documents, picked everything back in the box, warped and taped it. And today the courier came and collected my phone.
Now I have to use my good old HTC Legend again. However it uses regular SIM card, so I had a bit of fun making myself an adapter to up size the Nexus 4's micro-sim!
I talked to Google today and they are sending me a replacement. They told me I can keep the phone till the new one arrives. I just have to return it within 21 days.
Just crossing my fingers that they don't say the damage is my fault. I don't know how o could have caused it. I haven't does it and I take really good care of it.

You should contact google anyway if you want a warranty replacement. Go to the link below, click contact google, answer a few check box questions and there should be a phone number.
https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2411741?hl=en&ref_topic=2803008
Because I believe that the only way to fix this is to have the screen replaced.
Have the same problem here. I have the phone for 1 month now.
I live in the Netherlands and the nexus 4 did not get official release here. Should I still contact Google?
Could it be this problem only happens with the newer phone's? I have the one with the little feet on the back. Version 605 I thought. What version do you guys have?
Also should I unroot and lock the boot loader when I send it in for repair ?even though the problem has nothing to do with it.
Sorry for the poor English...

Welcome to xda-developers. Your English is fine.
You should contact Google.
Interesting that you mention the newer version of the phone -- I'd be interested in knowing if this is in fact a result of a newer manufacturing process, different materials, or maybe the place of manufacture (Korea or China). The place of manufacture can be identified by the letter in the fourth position of the serial number found on the box.
can someone update us on this issue? I have the same problem and i am so sad! I saved up 8 months to get this phone!

well, its certainly a hardware issue.
Digitizer, for what I know.
But no easy solution.
Would have happened due to the faulty charger.
But google is not helping!
I have the same exact issue. Playing PVZ2 is now extra difficult because of this issue.
Is there any other fix other than an RMA (currently not in the US)? :crying:

I have this same screen issue. Mine is is first row from top which makes it very frustrating. I am on 4.4.2 and still have this issue.
Can you describe what you've tried in more detail?
I have the same problem but mine is like 2 inches from the bottom of the screen. I can use the softkeys in portrait but they are unusable in landscape. I have had the phone since Nov 12 so sadly my phone is now out of warranty. LG's approved repair centre want £95 for a new screen. I am thinking maybe buy a Nexus 5 and trade this in for £70. I could sell it for like £130 but I would feel bad selling a phone I know the screen is on its last legs.
I have owned a Nexus 7 2nd gen for a couple months now and have just started to get random flashes of black (occurs for not even a quarter second) ...
I am wondering what causes this...
I have not damaged the Nexus in any way and bought it brand new..
I have only used CleanRom and PA ROM...
The functionality of the tablet remains great, but the flashes are very annoying ...I have tried clean installing multiple times but the flashes still happen...
Any feedback/solutions would be a big help...
Thanks

The whole screen?
I've noticed black lines when playing Terraria for hours but its only the background of certains areas. I chalked I up as game glitches.
I haven't seen anything outside of that.

I had that happen soon enough for a return to be viable. Do some more Google searching and you'll find people who fixed this as a hardware issue. They had to open the back and fiddle a connection. Didn't sound to hard but I just went to best buy instead.
Happy hunting, sorry I don't have a link.

Yea I would exchange it before it is too late. Doesn't seem that troublesome but if it got worse, or worst, disconnected entirely, it would bring bad news.

Just because you bought it off ebay doesn't mean it doesn't still carry the 1 year manufacturer warranty on the hardware. It would require you to send it in, but worth a shot.
Once you pop the back and start fiddling with hardware, you run the risk of doing enough damage where Asus will void the warranty. I think I would check with Asus first before resorting to hardware modifications.

AFAIK if you haven't already signed in to the apk then it won't work anymore since Google shut down the servers some time ago.
But don't worry, your Q still has a lot more potential than a paperweight.
I unlocked mine following ianandamy's guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2408799
Since KitKat is already available thanks to hharte I'd say go for it, instead of the guide's cm10. Here is the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596910
So according to the great guide
1, unlock your device, than
2, load an unsecure boot image,
3, load a recovery (you'll find a KitKat compatible in hharte's thread)
4, install the rom that suits your needs (with audio amplifier support or with HDMI audio out instead) and gapps.
