I just bought an unlocked Nexus 4, but am currently on a non-data plan with ATT. After I attempt to cut my regular size sim card and fail, I'll have to head down to the ATT store. The thing is, I would like to try and leave data off on my phone and not add data to my plan, and use my Nexus like this until my contract is up and I can switch to T-Mobile. My question is, what can I tell the ATT rep to get them to give me a micro sim without them wanting to see the phone I'm going to stick it in and subsequently add data to my plan?
What I do with Rogers here, I just go in and ask to buy a microsim. Take it home and call in and say you want to update you iccid(number on sim card). If they ask why on the phone I say I damaged my old one and bought a new one. If they ask in store why I just say I am buying one for a friend
Do you know how much they will charge? From searching around, they would likely give me on for free if I can word it right...

I don't know, I'm guessing $10 maybe
I have att. I just went into the store and said I need a microsim and without any questions or concerns the guy just proceeded to give me one so I think you should be fine. Unless micro sim is exclusive to smart phones, they aren't going to ask to see your new phone.

ATT wanted $26 for a new SIM from me. So I walked over to the T mobile store and bought one for like 10 by buying 3 pay as you go days worth. I then used that Sim as template to cut down my old att Sim with a kitchen knife.
If I wasn't on the cheep with a family plan on ATT I'd be on T-Mobile in a heartbeat.
P
Just say you need a new sim that's what I did and go it for free.
Just a heads up AT&T does regular IMEI sweeps. They also have the play store Nexus 4's IMEIs on file as smartphones so eventually they'll force a data plan on you.

This. A thousand times this. You may get away with it for a while, but short of changing your IMEI (illegal I believe), you will get caught.

Don't have ATT, but the other day when I got the phone I just went to the T-Mobile store and they had a little tool that will cut your sim to a microsim for you

i am going to go off on quite a story here but i hope that my struggles and experience might save someone my troubles.
to start off i was on Verizon. I had the thunderbolt w/ grandfathered unlimited data plan. it was unlimited text/data but no minutes on plan. Any used minutes were $0.25 so i was basically paying $80-$90/mo for the exact same plan as this new tmo/walmart one... plus it was $50 less!
if i would have known the hassle i was about to go through i just might have stayed with verizon and waited for the nexus... If you are not planning to port a number this process might go a lot easier.
this is my experience...
To start the whole process I pulled the trigger on a local SGSII for a steal on craigslist. i thought about how to leave verizon for a few days then decided to go for it. I purchased a sim kit from tmobile.com but was unable to wait for the SIM kit (over a week to ship!) i head over to a local tmobile B&M store. i told them the plan i wanted and show them online, they said they had heard ( i call BS) of it and that i could go online and choose it. They activate the SIM and began the number port from verizon. I was told to go online at home and select the plan i wanted, so i get home and go online to select my plan, but it isn't available. Every other plan was available but not the $30 5gb plan!
I called tmo support (prepaid support is an offshore callcenter) and was told because the SIM card was activated in store i was not eligible to get this plan. i was told i could purchase another SIM kit and it would work with no problems and i would still be able to port my number (that was already in the process).
At this point i visited another tmobile store and was successfully able to swap the activated SIM kit for an unactivated one. Only after several hours (and reps over the phone) and a trip to Walmart i find this in store bought SIM would not work either.
A SIM ACTIVATION KIT PURCHASED IN A B&M TMO STORE WILL NOT WORK
FOR THIS PLAN YOU MUST PURCHASE A SIM ACTIVATION KIT FROM TMOBILE.COM OR WALMART
ok. ok. now that the confusion was cleared (i was told differently by phone and in store reps) off i head to a local Walmart for the second time. surprise surprise, for the second they were clueless of this plan and were absolutely no help at all.
Next day my SIM kit from tmobile.com finally arrives!!! YES! at this point i am pretty sure this is the only way and this will go fine and i will be activated immediately through my.tmobile.com. i go online to activate. i enter all my info and activation code. I am presented with plan options and BINGO the $30 5gb plan is there! I choose the plan click next and get a "Review your order and submit" page. when clicking on "submit" the page just errors out. FAHHHHHH! i tried again and again and from 3 computers. same error at the same place!!!!! I call support and of course their response is "we can not activate this plan over the phone. you must activate online or at walmart" and when i replied "but neither of these options are working for me!!!!!!!!!" the call mysterioulsy dropped. at this time its 4 days from starting the number port from the original SIM and i start worrying about losing my ported number... eventually (several reps and hours later) I was able to get a CS rep on the phone that put me on hold very willing to help and found a way to get me on the correct plan. I then get transfered to the number porting dept to get my number moved to this correct account. WHEW! that evening everything is working fine and im getting data and relieved to finally have this experience behind me. I am just waiting for the number port to go through then i am done and on the road to $50 savings a month! not so fast...
The next day as soon as i noticed the number port went through i got a text from TMO that i had reached my data limit!?! WTF how could i go through 5gb in a week, most of it w/o service? i used the tmobile app to check my data usage and found they changed my plan on me!!! now i have the other $30 plan with like 100mb data! i call customer support furious! little good does that do. another day on the phone and multiple hangups later i was able to find someone who said i was basically screwed and that i would have to order a new SIM online and start over. WTF!?!?!?!?!
at this point im done fighting and just order another SIM.
after some research i call back to discuss this whole ordeal w CS and find out how they will transfer my $100 deposited to this bad account to my new account when i get the new SIM in the mail. i finally found a simpathetic rep who fought to get this fixed. using my my original activation code for verification that the plan was available (from the 1st sim purchased online) the rep found a manager that was able to over ride the plan back to the correct $30 5gb plan. I refused my new (replacement)SIM when it arrived and was credited the money back. Its been almost 2 weeks now and everything seems ok... FINGERS CROSSED!

after dropping my unlimited data at verizon i figured i was pretty much screwed and any other company (AT&T and Sprint suck in DFW from my experience) it was gonna cost more for worse... I was pretty determined to get this plan working. i guess its the cheapo in me
My experience was super simple……after reading up online prior to attempting.
Walked into T-Mobile store after seeing Wal-Mart did not have the SIM only activation kits. I paid 10$ for the kit after insisting to the Tmo store that I did not need them to set me up with anything.
Went home then plugged in the EMI,SIM & Activation code to the T-Mobile website. Funded the account and picked the plan… Done
(using Google voice for my number)
Did not have to talk with anyone and the whole process took maybe an hour.
My experience is delightful too. Since i read about ur post, i have little bit of scare about the walmart prepaid SIM card and Tmobile prepaid SIM card.
Luckily, I been into the shop so many time. All the employee know me, when i get in...they thought i getting the 49.99 value family plan, but i tell them i got the $30 prepaid plan from walmart but walmart run out of SIM card and was told to get one from Tmobile store. They had their time, they were very puzzle when i told them. But there is one experience lady went online and read about the plan, and surprisingly, she manage to figure thing out. One thing she mentions is "they had to activate the SIM card through the Tmobile website instead of their system" I think that is what saved me.
From my experience, if you going to let Tmobile employee do this, be sure they know what they are doing and you know what they are doing.

hahhahhahahah!
I did this today, didn't have any problems at all activating.
Followed the discussion on Slickdeals on this, and bought my sim card from Amazon for less than free, like 2 something, and it came with 3 something of T-Mobile credit on it.
I went onto the T-Mobile online activations website, and activated my sim card on the 5GB $30 plan. To pay I bought a discount refill pin that came instantly from CallingMart.
Smooth sailing all around.

I'd love to do a deal like this. How do you get the phone? They go for over $500! I'm getting one via T-Mobile corporate rate and it's still twice that $30 rate for only 2gb data, unlim text and 500 talk! I'd much rather have the $30 5g data unlim text 100 min deal....
Quite the horror story indeed...can't help but wonder if you had waited for your original sim in the mail if you would have had all these issues...
I really wish reps would read their email. But it may have been indirect you went to. This plan is only avalible at walmart and online. Tmobile retail stores have no way of activating this plan or switching you to it. If for some reason you change off of it there is no going back you will need to start again per the training materials provided by corporate. As for the number once a number is ported to tmobile no you cant port it again. They need to do a reuse request that can take up to 72 hours to complete. Glad its all working for you now and am very impressed you got prepaid to credit you anything.

Can you get an Android phone to act as a hotspot with this plan?
Dang, I feel for you man.
I didn't have to go through all that though.
I was already a T-Mobile customer out of contract. I seen that the prepaid plans were so much cheaper than the 95 something I was paying a month, so I switched over to prepaid.
All I did was pick up a prepaid phone from Target that was $30, popped the prepaid sim card into my Galaxy S2, and activated it online with the $30 web only offer.
No hassle whatsoever

Were you able to keep your old T-Mobile phone number, or did you need to activate with a new number?
My ordeal was not as bad as yours (for which sounds like a hell of a time.)
I purchased a $30 dollar phone from Wal-Mart the night prior to the $30 dollar plan being released.
Then purchased outright a GS2 from the local T-Mobile store, activated the SIM card on the $30 dollar pre-paid phone, then called T-Mobile support to port the number over.
I was quoted 24-48 hours, I was previously on Virgin Mobile with a Triumph and realized this really takes like 5 minutes.
After 48 hours I called and complained, they told me, it'll port over soon, no worries.
Called 24 hours after that, demanded to talk to the 'porting department' if there is one, and I talked to someone who did it right then and there, right to the point where he told me to reboot the phone and voila, my number was ported. From then it took about 4 hours to get full service/data, and a full 24 hours before I could go in and edit settings/profiles and stupid WebGuard settings on T-Mobile.com
Here's to hoping T-Mobile stays afloat and the pre-paid plan, If I have to port again i'm going to literally just call directly to the port department.
We all learn from these things, but the $30 plan is sooo worth it.
I'm on an unlimited family plan with my best friend right now & we're splitting the $150 bill, but he's been seriously pissing me off lately & I'm thinking of just telling him to go to hell & switching to this plan. Are there free night & weekend minutes or mobile to mobile with this? If not I'm thinking I could get around that with google voice & GrooveIP. Hmm.......

Unfortunately not, and I haven't dabbled with VOIP yet. I'll share what I find out
Yeah, it kind of went like that for me too... I was a post-paid customer (on the old Even More Plus, 500 & UL text/data for $60) and they converted me to pre-paid, but I couldn't pick the WM plan online. I had to order a SIM kit and wait for it to get here. Supposedly WM won't sell just the activation kit (I cannot confirm or deny this, didn't try).
I was told the whole time that I could port my old T-Mobile number over once it was done. That was wrong, basically ran into the same problem the OP had... I would lose the WM plan if I did. Not a huge deal to email all of my friends with a new number and put a voice mail message on the old number, small hassle to cut my monthly nut in half.
Keeping on forum topic, my new SGSII is pretty sweet!!

Something to consider, unless you have already cancelled your post account, is to port your number out to another service provider without picking up hardware (to avoid restock fees/wasting a store's on-hand stock) then giving the activations department a ring and having them port in your number from X to replace the "temp" number you have now with the WM plan.
Okay. So this isn't really a question as much as a head's up. But I'd like to hear personal experiences either way. Straight Talk is now selling SIM cards for activation using your own phone! This is a website-only offer. So if anyone happens to try this out, please, do tell!

In US, can you not buy your mobilephone one place, and the data/sms/voice subscription another? Do you have to get locked in to a long deal with dataplans and so on, only to buy the phone you want? Maybe I understand it wrong. That would be illegal here (in Norway), due to customers right to chose freely where they want to purchase services. Its also the same system all over the country, so all phones can be used in all networks.
I have wondered for a while, how is this in USA and other countries?
No this is just the case with straight talk, a cheap prepaid provider.
Edit: Though carrier phones do come locked to that carrier.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Ok, that is the same here, with prepaid service and locked phones, in order to get it for a lower price if you are willing to buy a provider-locked phone.
My speeds aren't great with AT&T around 2 down and 1 up. Are straight talk speeds comparable?

Missed delivery of my Straight Talk sim card yesterday...have to wait til Monday. My unlocked Note should be here end of next week early following week.
Super excited about this. Granted I'm just doing it to try out the International Note before Verizon's "Journal" comes along, but I'm going to use my RAZR hotspot for data, but I will report back with speeds using Straight Talk, once I get it.
I'd really like to see how that turns out. Please keep us posted!

Will do...I may push the data usage a bit and see how much I can get away with. Nothing major mind you.
I'm in Baltimore, Maryland and I used the old sim swapping way to get straight talk service. So far I'm impressed. I'm getting a consistent 3-4+ M down and 1.5 Up. Thats way higher than the 1M down and 100k up I was getting on T-mobile with my sensation 4g and the 150k down 100k up I was getting when I had an Evo on Sprint.
In the mobile phone world, the US seem so far behind! I often see in US movies people using flip open phones with an antenna stub, or even a pull up antenna. Phones we had in the '90s.
"You can get hold of me on my cell..."
Of course! Like a week after I buy a phone for ~$123 (including shipping) from Wal Mart.
I wonder if I can return this one to Wal Mart. I hope so.
I put a thread together here that shows how to set this up. (Or will these SIMs work without having to change all this stuff?)
There are currently three different types of SIM cards Straight Talk is offering; SIM cards for locked AT&T phones, SIM cards for locked T-Mobile phones, and SIM cards for unlocked phones. As long as you buy the appropriate card for your type of phone, you should be able to get full service.
And as for the US's current state of mobile technology, I rarely see anyone other than drug dealers using prepaid flip phones. The main problem with mobile service in the US is the carriers. Carriers don't sell unlocked phones. Most carriers have no truly unlimited data plan to speak of. And plan pricing, for the most part, is outrageous... especially with AT&T. The reason this Straight Talk SIM card business is such a big deal is simple. My AT&T plan is $90/mo. It includes 450 minutes, unlimited text, and 2GB of data. With Straight Talk for $45/mo., I can get unlimited minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited data. I can get unlimited everything for two phones on Straight Talk for the same monthly rate that AT&T charges for one phone. And AT&T doesn't even have an unlimited smartphone data plan... at all!

That used to be the case, but no so much anymore. You do still see 90s style phones on cheap prepaid operators like Tracfone, but the top end phones on the big carriers are pretty much the same as we get in Europe.
Plan costs and data allowances are often dreadful though!

This is definitely an awesome deal for people in the US. That's why my Straight Talk SIM should be here today. I've been dealing with using Edge on Simple Mobile because I wasn't going to give in and pay $180 a month for two lines on AT&T.
I'm definitely hoping for some decent data speeds.

Straight Talk Sim card just showed up...now waiting on my Note ....getting anxious.
Hmm, I was considering adding another line just so I could keep my iphone and the Note, both with data instead of switching between the two, but I didn't want the additional voice plan with At&t. This sound pretty sweet. Since I mainly want the unlimited data, $45 for it is not bad at all. If the data speeds are not that great, I just won't renew after a month. Definitely going to try this.
Had my GN for a week now, rooted and ready for a new rom. My Straight Talk sim will be arriving in 2 days so I can test out the data speeds around my area in the suburbs of NYC. Well worth the $45 30day plan with no contracts. IMO.
I will be driving down to Florida (20 hours) next week so this is also a good opportunity to test the data speeds along Interstate 95. If this works well, I will definitively port my Sprint # to Straight Talk and cut my bill more than half.
No, for the most part, if you don't go prepay, you have to go to a carrier, which LOCKS the phone to their network. Even if you put a different SIM card in the phone, it will not work, unless they unlock it (or you use an online unlock service).
Most of the time, I've had no issues getting the carrier to unlock the SIM card, after you have either been on their service a while, or, are a good standing customer (bills paid on time). I just tell them I'm going out of country, need an international SIM, and the code shows up in my email within 24 hours.
The reason the U.S. market is the way it is, was the business model that the carriers adopted a long time ago. They offer you a "free" or "reduced" price
phone, by showing you the alleged retail price. You "think" you are getting
a huge bargain, but, they lock you into a 2 year contract, which more than
makes up whatever reduced price you are receiving on the phone.
We all know, the "retail" price of the phone isn't what the manufacturer pays,
since they buy in bulk. Heck, the "49.99" phone they sell you, is most likely
what they paid for it in the first place, and the carriers laugh all the way to
the bank! But, the moron consumers in the USA, who never have been taught
economics, think they are getting a bargain, so they come into a carrier store,
and the carrier drones just toss a line, hook em and reel them in.

T-Mobile website is currently 'out of stock' for the micro sim activation kit (i want the prepaid 100 voice, unlimited text, 'unlimited' data plan). According to the online chat person I talked to, the kit should be back in stock in 24 to 48 hours.
I just did a chat session on their website. Asked for a Micro-SIM to use with the Nexus 4 and the rep in the chat gave me a link to order, and verified the order number went through. I did this at 4PM. Literally at 9AM in the morning our mailroom guy handed me a package with the SIM inside.
All for $1 and change...lol

Did you need an activation code? I am not currently a T-Mobile customer.

Definitely just go to the store and get one. I called 3 stores in the atlanta area (near my house, near my work, on the drive there) and they all said they have a crap ton of them in stock and will give you one/activate it in store for free, or (if you prefer) will cut your normal sim with a hole punch type of thing for free as well.
I'm a prepaid Tmob subsriber and I went to my local store where I go to refill my account every month, the guy there said that a microsim would
cost 20 bucks!
Planning to order one online now. I would still be able to retain my number, right?
I just got one for free in my local T-Mo store. Google doesn't anticipate even shipping mine until today, so I asked them not to activate it. You can activate it from 611 or from their website once you get the phone - obviously that will kill your existing phone so hold off before doing this.

Waiting on my Nexus to arrive so I can go through the steps. I hope it won't be a pain...
If I am using Straight Talk ( or planning on using ) is the sim card different?

The last phone I purchased directly from VZW was a full-price Note 2. To upgrade the phone, I went to VZW website, selected my full-price Note 4 and attempted to check out. However, to complete the checkout, VZW required me to make changes to my plan where continuing the Unlimited Data feature was not an option. Manager at the local VZW outlet confirmed the same; they can't sell me a full-price phone without changing the plan.
Had to purchase my VZW, carrier unlocked phones from Amazon.
well that's bs. good thing is it seems more companies are making universal phones that can be activated anywhere... like the nexus 6, and the new moto x and new nexuses comin out... meaning, I'll never again buy a phone from Verizon itself with their ugly branding. yay!

Wow that is messed up. Verizon is trying anything at this point.

I wonder if the new phone came with a new Sim? When I upgraded last, the procedure to keep unlimited is to toss new Sim (burn with fire then microwave) and install old Sim for first activation.
Funny, I just ordered my phone on the 13th and it did nothing to my unlimited data. Bought from the Verizon Web site. It was a certified pre owned.I have been out of contract with unlimited data for years.

maybe you just had bad luck in store.. we all know how corporate verizon employees aren't the most truthful people.
just asked my old boss who runs his own retailer... they can sell off contract no problem. it's like when you goto verizon and buy off contract, they still want your number and stuff.. but it's like, i'm just buying a phone full price, you don't need to know anything about me... yet again, another reason why I never buy from corporate verizon and only use retailers.

I bought one 3 days ago and kept unlimited data no problem. I would call CS and complain LOUDLY. A few months back I had a sim card go bad and when I took it in to get replacement, the rep changed my plan to 2 GB. Month and a half later I get an email about overuse of data and when I called in and explained what happened they gave unlimited back to me. She said within 30 days it is much easier to correct, but, they had to put in a service request for mine, which, took about 2-3 business days to reinstate. Good luck!
I can't see a corporate store do this, so must be a franchise store to screw up like that.
The people in the stores have been told to do what ever it takes to cheat you out of the unlimited data, that is first hand knowledge from a store manager in the family. As far as the phones go, you should not have been able to buy the phones without changing your plan, all phones from verizon are full price no more upgrades and require changing your plan, wether you pay cash or on the little deal on a monthly basis.
How about buying an unlocked compatible phone from Amazon or elsewhere? Will they try to force you out of the unlimited data plan to activate?

not if you're buying full price. I got the new moto x.. has nothing to do with your plan. it's just like buying any product on amazon. click buy, bam, done. throw your sim in, and it activates. verizon had absolutely nothing to do with the process and I love it.

My girlfriends sister currently has LG G3 with Verizon. She just paid it off and the phone started to go bad. So Newegg had a good deal on 6P 499.99 64GB +free 50$ Newegg GC.
Last week I was able to get the month2month discount back for that line it was really rough, had to tell them if they don't all the lines will be gone to att, which they will sooner or later just waiting for some cell phone deals in bestbuy. Anyways I had the Moto X Pure and what would happen was the discount would fall off because the system would see the phone as unlocked with no image etc.
What's the easiest way to proceed without cutting the current LG G3 sim? I asked the rep to send me a nano sim card. I am just afraid activating a new sim card online on verizon or with rep will trigger the system to remove the discount.
Worst case scenario i'll go to a cell phone store and pay 10$ to cut the micro-sim.
Any tips?
You can go in and get a nano sim and have it activated without them modifying any account.

You mean go with the free sim card sent to any Verizon store and have them activate the sim? I can do the same thing online though. What would be the benefit of doing it in store? the problem is on Share Everything plans those greedy people at Verizon took those discounts away, unless you really try hard to get it back.
