Using the Play Store without Google Apps in /system/app - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that in order for the Play Store to work (and other Google Apps as well I think), I need to have GoogleServicesFramework.apk and GoogleLoginService.apk installed in /system/app. My question is: Is there a way to get Play Store (and other Gapps) to work without having the mentioned APKs installed /system/app? Is there a way to have them function from /data/app?

Sorry chief no luck on that one. Without the framework to support it and verify your account to Google play it won't work.

Yeah, I figured I would absolutely need the framework and login, but wondering if there's anyway they can be placed somewhere else other than /system

[23AUG] "Hacked" Play Store 3.8.17.4 (Wishlist, delta "smart" updates, gift cards)
Hey guys,
I was looking for this yesterday and I found nothing, so I decided to "hack" the Play Store apk myself.
It's just 3.8.17 Play Store with Wishlist and (US only for now) gift cards activated.
How to install (or update)
1. Make a nandroid or backup Play Store by Titanium
2. Go to Settings » Apps » All » Google Play Store, tap "Uninstall updates" (if active) and confirm
3. Download my APK, place it on /sdcard and rename to Phonesky.apk
4. In Root Explorer (or any other file explorer that uses root permissions, but don't use ES File Explorer) go to /system/app and remove Phonesky.apk
---4.1. If you see any com.android.vending-*.apk file in this directory, remove it too
5. Copy Phonesky.apk from /sdcard to /system/app
6. Reboot

They aren't. It enables both them and wishlist. Both are fully usable, however there's no way to buy any gift code ATM

Can I ask if this is dpi hacked? As in for those who have a dpi of 162 like me it will fix the market incompatibility error?
If not how can I hack it to force the market to use a set dpi? Instead of reading my build.prop?

Nope. It lets you download apps unavailable in your country (they aren't shown in search results!) or for your device. It also lets you access and manage your Wishlist and gift cards.
Is that possible to free download to payable apps, can u do it?

It's impossible and illegal. Do not even ask for it.
Nice work webDeWo. Imma download this now. Funny how you hack a app that is free but not yet available now people want you to start getting apps for free. smh.
Hi, and thanks for sharing your work.
I have one question though : if I install an app while on the play store website on the PC, it will still download it to my phone with this hacked store ?
I'm sorry if I don't make any sense, English isn't my native language.

Can I ask what you did to change it? I've been trying to figure this out for the longest time. Plus sorry to be a pain but can you get rid of just device restrictions and not auto updating the market? I wouldn't mind if the market updated itself

He's talking about going to play. Google. Com and installing an app from there. But Google services framework is what handles that (if I'm not mistaken)

[Q] Samsung Apps Store on Nexus 4

I've just upgraded from a Galaxy Note and I'm looking for the Samsung Apps Store, as I've purchased a number through the Samsung store.
It's showing as unavailable in the Play store, so wondered if anyone knows if it's available to download elsewhere?
I think many samsung apps require touchwiz that's why you don't see many of them being ported.

You shall mount system as RW... there's no other way. If the busybox (are you using the Play version???) cannot do it for you, try the Remount by Stericson from Google play.
actually i am not signed up to google play.. do you have a link to an apk file?

A better way(for now)
Found a better way for installing apps not available in my region.
Just go to: "https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/promotion_3000e26_androidtv_apps_all"
(I was not allowed posting a normal link)
from any computer and install whatever app you want.
Works great for me in Norway.
(don't tell Google )

I need to use the older version of Gmail

Hi,
for compatibility with other applications on the tablet I need to use the older version of Gmail.
I know where to download it.
But I do not know how to do it automatically has not updated to the latest version of Google Play.
The application can somehow separate from Google Play?

Yes you can sever the app from the Play Store by re-signing the app. I can do for you but, which version of Gmail do you want it done to?

You don't need to "re-sign" anything.
Download the apk from apkmirror. Uninstall Gmail, or if it's a system app go to settings- apps- Gmail and uninstall updates to replace with factory version your phone came with. Install Gmail version you downloaded. Immediately go into play store for Gmail, click 3 dots at top right and uncheck the box to auto update.
If anyone modifies an apk and gives it to you, I would not trust it. Could have a backdoor or keylogger or something.

Thanks for providing an alternative.
Though, I never stated that resigning it was the only way. I only knew that way and thought it was a simplistic way of doing it.
Now I know of another way.
