[SOLVED] No radio after rooting, tmobile USA - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Trying to get my new mb525 setup. Got it last night and everything worked well as far as the radio, able to get 3G with decent connection speed.
After rooting and installing CM10 (quarx) I'm not getting anything on the network, no 2g, no 3g, and just "emergency calls only". Thought it might be the tmobile sim card, but tried others and still no luck. Put in an old AT&T sim card and got a connection, so seems that there is something wrong with the radio itself, at least for the frequencies I need, but for GSM I'd think there wouldnt be any problem since all the radios are quad band GSM, right?
I've tried using standalone Baseband Switcher, as well as the one built into CM with no luck. I also tried the 3G fixes, replacing the files in /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default with those in freq_F_US_342_107-850-1700-2100-signed.zip.
Baseband is at EPU93_U_00.60.03, and I know it has previously had JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_177-003_BLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_USAJRDNEMARAB1B8RTGB03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTGB_P019_A010_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf flashed onto it. Have rebooted, reflashed, wided dalvik/cache/system quite a few times since last night, with no luck.
Is there a solution for this? I would appreciate any insight.
Thank you,

Anybody?
Has anyone ever had similar problems and been able to fix it? After searching a bit I've found threats of others with the problem, but seems no one has ever posted a real solution

Yes, I've tried both the signed kernels here http://defy.wdscript.fr/kernel/, that were linked from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795647.

So following up on this.
I flashed the JORDN_U3_6.36.0_SIGNED_USAJRDNTMOB1B4B5DE1028.0R_JORDANTMO_P022_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf.gz sbf file, Tmobile base, as a start. No signal. Pulled the official OTA update, still no signal. This puts baseband version at epu93_U_00.58.00, and kernel at 2.6.32.9-g8431013.
Rooted with Gingerbreak and installed Baseband switcher, have tried each of the 3 TMobile bands and still no signal.
At this point I've largely given up on getting this to work for me, but now I just want to understand why it doesn't. Is there something that controls the radio that wouldn't be taken care of by flashing and SBF? Is there anything that controls radio frequencies/firmware besides this, and is there any way to determine what frequencies a current radio firmware supports?
Does anyone have a working tmobile nandroid backup that I could compare with this?
Seems unlikely, but is it possible that this is a hardware issue that just happened to occur while I was initially putting on CM10?
I realize this is a wall of questions, so thanks for reading this far

Last update.
Success, I'm a dumbass. I finally realized that the baseband I was selecting wasn't for the network I was trying to connect to, it was for the radio hardware! One of the Chinese firmwares, ME722 1.0 was perfect for me, and seems to support more than just the bands listed in CM. Says 850/1900/2100, but I'm getting nice HSPA speeds on tmobile, which is in the 1700 mhz band, so great stuff.
Hope this helps someone else, and saves them a few hours.

Nexus S Radio Updates ( Which baseband do I choose)

Since I am a new member and can not post a response in the dev forum, I'm posting this here.
I'm currently on the Cm7 RC1 build, but I have updated my baseband to the newest baseband from the 2.3.3 build.
I am currently on baseband I9020XXKB1.
I have been reading in some posts about a new baseband I9020XXKB3 which is supposed to be much better. But I saw someone post about this being only for european phones ?
I was looking for some calcification on the issue.
I am on T-mobile USA, so would it be better if i updated from KB1 to KB3 or remained on KB1
Definitely KB3.
Everything looks better with this version. A must if you plan to flash Voodoo kernel to get rid of "low contrast" or yellow tint issue after upgraded to 2.3.3.
I have the same question . I I'm running now kb1. Will it be better if I use kb3???

I just updated from kb1 to kb3. Don't notice too much of a difference yet. But still I guess its nice to have the latest and greatest.
Give it a shot. Updating is as easy as flashing a zip in recovery.

flashed the KB3 baseband on cm7 RC1.
I was on the KB1 baseband and applied the KB3 baseband thru clockwork mod.
I am on t-mobile USA and I can not get a 3G connection. All I can get is an EDGE connection...
Any suggestions to obtain a 3G connection ??
Thanks

Check your APN settings in the phone's setting app? Not sure where they're at in Cyanogen, but there should be an option to check them, modify them.
Sorry New using up first 10 I dont like this new color scheme at all 2.3.3 radio on cm7 was complete difference picks up signal immediately at start and im getting 3g at my job where i wasnt before
thats KB1 T-Mo US
Same question here,
I have a T-Mobile phone with KB1, should i replace it to KB3?
Build number is GRH78C (2.3.2).
Thanks.
Okay what do I change the APN settings to ?
I also thought baseband version only affected the phones modem ?
What all does the baseband affect ?
Were can I download KB3 from i have been looking and not able to find it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975105
my i9020 bought in usa which is using in spain have some reboots on cm7 #11 using supercurio voodooo kernel and radio kb3 now i've changed to kb1 and seems all is ok
I don't know if radio was the problem but for the moment seems yes..
What is the radio version before kb1?
unable to update...during the process it just aborts.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
I still use JK8 with 2.3.3, because KB1 and KB3 has too little voice when calling.

What exactly do you mean by that ? Low earpiece volume ?
Hello guys,
what about the new KD1? I have it on my nexus 9020 after updating to 2.3.4.
Someone knows if there are some improvement in this release ?
thanks in advance.
hey, im in sweden, currently using KD1 should i use anything alse?
I was using KD1 for quite a while but I kept getting radio dumps...I've since tried the KC1 (the one that is supposedly only for Korean carriers) and found it to be far the fastest and most reliable even in low service areas. Anyone else in Canada finding the same or tried any radios that they found better?

Is it possible to use Defy+ on Telus Mobility in Canada

Hi,
I just picked up a Defy+ from a wholesaler online. It was supposedly unlocked already but it won't work when I placed my SIM card in it. My card is for Telus Mobility in Canada. Just curious if anyone has had success using the Defy+ on Telus's network. When purchasing the phone I was under the impression that it was just a Defy with bumped OS version and higher CPU clock speed, but essentially the same hardware. Telus previously offered the original Defy so I'm assuming that the Defy+ will work also. Any help/advice/info would be greatly appreciated.
I've also got a similar post on this thread but decided to create my own as well.

Just an incompatible baseband selected. What is the rom version you have on it?
Phone is still stock as it came
Just added a screen shot of the about phone. Haven't flashed any ROMs yet, or even rooted it. I'm waiting to make sure I can use the phone with Telus before I start doing all that to it. In case I need to return it.
I was considering flashing the baseband from this thread to see if it had an effect. Do you have a suggested baseband I should flash, or a suggested thread to follow? I'm no stranger to xda and modding phones, though I'm far from an expert and the Defy+ is completely new to me so I'm still just doing a lot of reading on it before I do anything.
Thanks,
Vic
Still not luck with Telus network
So after trying various Defy root methods I discovered that the old exploits don't work on my phone which has BL7. Found a good thread that handled rooting my device and successfully rooted. Following which I installed a current 2ndinit from this thread and then flashed the latest CM10 nightly. After playing with the baseband switcher and trying everyone I still haven't gotten it to register with Telus. The best I've achieved is finding the network and it failing to register.
Anyone with suggestions on what I should try next?
Still trying to get this device to work with my telus SIM card. Looking for any help to trouble shoot. Would like to start using this device as a second phone. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you manually entered or checked to see if the APN are correct after booting?

OKay I see it says you that it was supposed to be unlocked but i'm thinking maybe you should get another unlock code and try it. That would be the only other reason i could see it not working other than APN not correct or wrong baseband. Try China ME722.1.10.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give unlocking it another shot tonight. I tried a half dozen baseband settings in cm10 that match the telus bands but no dice. Keep getting an ME error when it did see the telus network. I'll post my efforts tonight.

I've come to the conclusion that getting the Defy+ I purchased to work on Telus isn't possible. At least by me. I confirmed that the device was indeed unlocked by trying it with SIMs from both Rogers and Fido, which both worked. I also tried a Bell card and had the same results I had with my Telus SIM, which was being able to see the network but not connect or use talk or text. This was regardless of the baseband I used.
In the end I just returned the phone back to complete stock and gave the device to a friend on Rogers who needed a new phone badly but couldn't afford an upgrade at this time.

Too late now, but for reference you could have tried flashing a new radio. Worked for me, and also the baseband that works may not necessarily be geographically related to your location. In India the Vodafone France baseband works fine
Sent from my MB526 using xda premium
I tried to flash the Telus.zip baseband I found in a thread and it returned an error on each attempt. Flashing any other baseband that matched the frequencies for my network still resulted in a failed network connection. Same results occurred with the Bell SIM I tested with, which is a very similar network to Telus. After checking Telus' compatibility list it clearly stated the Defy+ was not compatible. I still find that strange since as far as I understand it is simply a Red-lens Defy with a larger battery and a more current ROM. I thought for sure if I added the correct frequencies I'd be set. I was mistaken as my repeated attempts have shown.
Interesting. But did you flash an older or newer Radio(not baseband)?
If defy is compatible defy plus has got to be, unless they use some twisted form of imei locking
Sent from my MB526 using xda premium
I tried the baseband from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117553
I also tried using the cm10 baseband switcher.
Didn't realize I could flash a radio as well. When I did see and connect to Telus I'd immediately get an ME error and then loose connection to the network. Where would I find radio files?
Isn't it redundant now, since you don't have the phone? Anyways there's a thread called radio fixes or something
Sent from my MB526 using xda premium
Not having the device anymore doesn't negate my desire to solve my problem. I might get that phone back or I my decide to pick up another unlocked device that gives me similar problems. I no longer want to sign contacts for discounted devices so I'm always on the look out for good deals on unlocked hardware I can play with. Thanks for the replies.

Well since I'm on Telus as well with the red lense defy and I checked gsm arena and a few unlock sites. They all said and indicate that phone can be used on the Telus network. Seeing as its not a phone that Telus originally sold that is why I asked about the apn. Anytime I've ever used an unlocked phone on Telus I've ways had to input the apn.
Other than that sometimes when I flash I don't always get a radio signal for some strange reason. Even changing baseband doesn't solve the problem I usually have to flash another rom and then come back to the one I want or try a different kernel. Either way I'm like you except I never would have gave it away till I solved the problem lol
Sent from my MB526 using xda app-developers app
It was more than just a case of setting the apn. I have no problem doing that. In fact that's exactly what I did with the Rogers SIM so that I could test it's data before I let my friend have it. I tried numerous ROMs with it, none of them would allow me to connect to Telus even after choosing an appropriate baseband. Unfortunately because it wasn't a Telus phone to begin with I didn't have a working Telus radio on it. I tried flashing the Telus baseband, it would return an error. I tried flashing the entire Telus ROM, it went into a boot loop as expected. I got it back to it's stock Retail ROM, after rooting that tried a baseband switcher and still wasn't able to see connect to Telus. Though it would see the network. Best luck I had was with CM10 with the Argentina baseband which would connect to Telus until I either tried to call or text. At which point I would get an ME error message and it wouldn't connect again without a reboot. At that point I suspected that maybe this device was being blocked by some sort of IMEI filtering much as thekguy suggested above and gave up on it for now. When my friend does upgrade and returns the phone I might try again for kicks. It was a neat little phone. I'm even tempted to look for a used one that is from Telus...
Please shed some light in the errors you get while flashing the telus baseband
And if you get a boot loop after sbf flash, then wipe data and cache from stock recovery
Sent from my MB526 using xda premium
I'll clarify my description of boot loop in the instance of after flashing the Telus froyo stock ROM was actually more of a soft brick. The phone became unresponsive almost immediately after turning on, blank screen, no response to button presses, essentially a brick. The only sign of life was if I pulled the battery while connected to usb the LED light would flash white for a brief second. That gave me the idea to start up an sbf flash until it got to the waiting for device message, at which point I'd plug in usb and install battery and the flash would force it into boot loader before it could go "dead"again. As far as a ROM getting stuck at the boot image, yes I know a quick wipe fixes the boot issue. At least it had for me every time I got into an endless boot process. Had to do it after recovering from the failed Telus ROM flash with the stock Retail ROM.
Thanks for the tip though. I know you are being helpful.
As far as the exact wording of the error message, I'll have to look it up when I'm back at the PC I use for modding an such... Most I can remember is it start with "ME blah blah blah" but I have a note saved with the exact line.
Cheers, Vic

If the telus baseband failed to install via cwm due to cwm incompatibility, you can manually try to copy over the baseband files included in the zip according to the directory structure of the zip
Well, this was my last idea:If this doesn't work
Sent from my MB526 using xda premium
Ya, that was the one thing I wish I had tried before giving up on the phone. I'd considered it but wasn't sure if it'd work. When I passed it on it wasn't rooted anymore and I'd invested so much time with getting it back to stock that I had just had enough of it at the moment. Almost regret it. If I get it back any time soon that'll be where I start again.

Tablet doesn't look so good...

I have an SGH-T849. Trying to unlock it. Cant find any positive guides for custom roms or anything. Everything is only on the p1000 so I took my my chances and flashed p1000 firmware so I can fit in. But now I really need your help cuz network signal is a must and I lost it after the flash. I have tried copy and paste modem.bin to system/vendor and flashed the tmobile modem but no go.. Also I am in bad shape because I cant find stock firmware anywhere. All links are dead and samfirmware doesnt even have it listed. Any help would from anyone would be great considering this isnt my tablet
Not every Rom has modem.bin at /system/vendor
In fact most at /radio except for cm10 that was built about two weeks ago to last week.
Now all back to /radio.
And I am talking about ICS and JB Rom.
And correct apn is a must.

Overcome gb stock safe has T-Mobile modem. Modem thread in development subforum sticky also has it.
But let me ask you this.
What do you see as baseband in the phone info.
Because even JPZ can connect to T-Mobile just no 3g. Edge only.
If has baseband and can't connect, can't help you.
But there is a person that has stock T-Mobile froyo and can share it.
You just have to search.

Well Itried flashing the the tmobile radio but it wont stick. Everything on the tab seems fine it just wont register the network. my baseband is JPZ.
Edit: I flashed Overcome stock GB and the tmobile radio... It went good my baseband is T-Mobile. However it still wont register the network. I am staring to think that the sim card is not activated.
Edit: Thanks much for your help. I am happy to say that my friends sim got deactivated. Up till 4 am thinking I screwed something up.
It sucks isn't it when another thing cause you to troubleshoot other things.
But, if you are on T-Mobile network and only going to use data and not voice call, your JPZ modem is going to only give you EDGE (2G) speed.
To get 3G you still need to use the T-Mobile modem I mentioned.

T-Mobile USA and Older radios problem!

We all know that after updating to 4.2.2 via OTA and the new radio .48 the LTE is disabled. Some users have flashed older radios .27 and .33 and were successful enabling LTE again on our devices! However most of T-Mobile USA users(including myself) are NOT able to get older radios work on stock rooted 4.2.2! After flashing older radios you have usable data connection but no audio in call! I`m not able to hear anything when connected to a call! So far I have tried:
1.Flashing .27 radio and installing the RIL for 4.2.1= no audio in call
2. Flashing .33 radio and installing the RIL for 4.2.1= no audio in call
If anyone has been successful getting it work on T-Mobile USA, please share your steps and methods to achieve that!
Thanks

I had the same issue. .33 screwed up my phone. I couldn't hear anything from the earpiece. Unfortunately I found the reason why and .48 fixed the problem. Anyways, which city do you live in that has LTE from T-Mobile? There are very very few LTE coverage in USA from t mobile. It would be pointless to enable lte if you do not live in a lte coverage area. I don't know why .33 won't work on 4.2.1. It should work.

I don't think it would matter if the phone was running on a custom rom with a old baseband. Basebands, bootloaders, kernels and roms are kinda like their own thing, y'know.
Same thing happened to me, had to go back to .48

[Q] Using new "hybrid" (.27/84 or .33/84) radios on 4.2.2 works?

I'm not quite clear on whether you can use a newer radio on an older ROM. As far as I can tell, I should be able to, but I just want to make sure I'm not just misreading the various posts about radios. Most posts talk about downgrading to older radios but not many talk about upgrading to a newer one. I would like to try out LTE in my area and see how it goes but since the N4 is my daily driver, I don't want it out of commission too long because I tried something I shouldn't.
I'm not quite as familiar with flashing Radios. I'm quite comfortable flashing recoveries or new roms, but flashing radios is a new one for me. The exact question I have is - Can I flash one of the new "hybrid" radios from HERE (I'm not sure whether the .27/84 hybrid or .33/84 hybrid will work better for me so I plan to try both) and have it be alright on my current ROM? I'm currently running Paranoid Android 3.6, Android 4.2.2.
Also - is there a post that someone knows about that can give me some more detail about where Radios fit in with all the other "pieces" (ie Recovery, Kernel, Boot Loader, etc)? I'd like to learn more about it.
Thanks,
Zeustopher
yes, you can. ive been using the .27 hybrid radio since yesterday, and it works great on 4.2.2 and lte. and ive even seen better data speeds since. my lte topped off under 29mbps download before yesterday. after, i now top off just under 33mbps download
