[Q] Nexus 4 Sim Card

I was wondering how easy it would be to go from a Galaxy S2 to a Nexus 4. If I wanted to, would I be able to just buy the Nexus 4, pop in the SIM card from my Galaxy S2, and just go giddy with joy from there?

The N4 has a Micro SIM, so you would either need to 1) Cut the SIM (service available almost anywhere) or 2) Get a Micro SIM from your carrier.
You can then get a Micro SIM adapter, which in short converts the Micro SIM back to the Standard SIM size if you choose to go to the S2 again.

Okay, I'm hoping you can and are willing to share some of your knowledge with me. I just sold my Galaxy Note (i717) but held onto the SIM card, should I trash it since the Nexus 4 needs a Micro-Sim?

Your SIM card will still work on the nexus 4 just cut it. Plenty of tutorials online and pretty easy.

If you're really desperate for a micro-SIM and/or short on cash you can cut it, though personally I'd recommend that you just get a micro-SIM from your carrier. Here in Australia at least, I believe there are a small amount of SIMs that just won't cut down to a micro-SIM without turning into a dud since the metal contact sections are slightly larger/smaller.
You can also use a cut mini-SIM->micro-SIM as an interim SIM whilst awaiting the legitimate micro-SIM

Whoa, wait. They CHARGE for sim cards in Australia? Here in the states you can go to your local carrier store and request a few for free! Or does it only apply to Micro-Sims?

Oh dear, the inequity, for my carrier at least, it's $20 for a new SIM (any new SIM). Not sure about other carriers though they might be free (mine's a very budget oriented but great value for money type of carrier)

Definitely free to get a replacement SIM with Telstra, though they're pretty much the premium carrier in Australia. Guessing you're Amaysim or LiveConnected? I'll probably switch to LC once I get the N4.

Yep, LiveConnected. I get heaps of data and credit to use though and I'm more than satisfied with their service.

I think you got your answer already, but wanted to give my input on one thing, might save you a few bucks if it isn't too late already.
If you chose to use the micro sim back in S2, you DO NOT need an adapter. I was swapping my iPhone 4 sim back and forth between s2 and ip4, In s2, you just align the sim contacts with the metal contacts of the phone and push it in place.. no need for an adapter, and most adapters wont fit in s2 unless you apply a lot of pressure which may damage your phone.

Activating the N4

So I am going to get the N4 from the play store as soon as its available.
I have a galaxy S2 with TMobile now. I've put it up for sale and have a buyer all lined up. How do I activate the N4? Will there be a place for my to put my SIM card in? Will I have to take the phone to TMobile?

there's nothing to activate, just make sure your SIM card is a microsim. If it isn't then I suggest ordering a 3$ micro sim cutter from amazon, or go to T-mobile and see if they're willing to give you a micro sim.

Thats what I needed to know. I have a mini sim in my S2. I don't even know if tmobile has micro sim cards yet. I'll end up getting one from amazon.

Haha, I don't think I'll get a micro sim or a micro sim cutter. I'm cutting it with scissors LOL. But it probably would be a good idea to go to att and ask for a micro sim so I could keep the original to go back in my old phone if the N4 sucks, butI doubt it will...so I'm still cutting it with scissors

You don't have to take it to T-Mobile. I just called Customer Support (611) this evening and told them I'm getting an unlocked phone to upgrade my current line and need a micro SIM for it, and they are mailing me one free. (They'll do expedited shipping if you pay for it.) When you get your Nexus 4, just call 611 again or go to www.t-mobile.com/sim to activate it. No scissors, no cutter, and no trip to the store necessary.

Just talked to the tmobile rep. I can go to any tmobile store and get a micro sim card free of charge at any time.

Funny thing. I just called them asking that exact statement, they said unfortunetly they cannot ship just the micro sim card, only with a new phone. I asked to speak to a manager and got transfered to the accessories department. They went on to tell me they don't deal with that and I need to go in store WITH THE DEVICE.

That's because you were the guy who escalated to a manager. Trust me on this, I've worked call centers. Just be polite, say thanks anyways and call back. You'll get someone else and they may have a different tune. Having been on the other end of the phone, no matter how nice or polite you are, if you "ask to speak to a manager" you are labeled instantly as a ****.

Never said you did it right away, but the fact you did at all is the point. Not trying to step on toes, just giving some call center tips to help you get what you are looking for. I won't go into it as this isn't the place for it, but feel free to PM me if you are interested in some good tips.
Activating for myself will involve dropping in with my N4 to Telus retail and picking up a microSIM as my current phone uses a regular SIM. Store has it listed for 10$, but we'll see if I can talk it down. I don't want to deal with cutting the SIM.

Careful with that, friend did it with a printout template and it wouldn't work on the HTC One X because it was off by a very small amount. Even despite trying tape/etc it still wouldnt make proper contact.

Huh, strange. I wouldn't have expected that, given how straightforward and easy it was when I called. I said, "I'm buying an unlocked phone and need a micro SIM for it," and the agent just asked which line I was putting it on and how soon I needed it, then confirmed that the order had been placed; couldn't have been easier. Oh, well, YMMV, I guess. (And we'll see how well it works when I get the phone -- it's possible that it was easy because it was wrong! Worst case, I have to hop in the car for the 20-minute drive down to the T-Mobile store.)

Does this not look easier than any option to anybody? If it goes wrong, then you can go through the trouble of getting a sim and activating it, but I think cutting is definitely worth a try.

Oky guys I already have 2 pre-paid micro sim card activation kit, seating on my table they aren't activated yet. So my question is when I got my nexus I can put the sim and transfer my number to the micro sim ?

Prepaid T-Mobile sims aren't compatible with a post-paid account.
If you have a prepaid plan then I think you can transfer.

[Q] Cut down Very old normal SIM down to MICRO SIM -> Damage Sim Slot?

Hey,
I earlier cut down my very old, like 6 or more years old SIM card down to a Micro SIM.
When i inserted it in the Nexus 4 there was some kind of resistance but it fit in.
Unfortunately the cutting didnt work so i had to get a new Micro Sim eventually from my mobile phone provider.
When i took out the old , cut-down-SIM i also had to press comparatively strong with the ejection tool to get the SIM-Tray to pop out.
Now when i compare the thicknes of my old SIM and the new MICRO SIM, the MICRO SIM seems to be thinner.
Is it possible that i damaged the SIM-Card Slot?
If yes , how would i realize this?

next time I would suggest to use sand paper to smooth the edges so that it can be easier fitting in. Thats what I did when i cut my SIM. works perfectly now.
It is possible that your sim slot has a light damaged.
You could realize it this way:
if you are using a regular MICRO-SIM, and if your phone sometimes searching for SIM card, it means the MICROSIM is too loose inside the slot and probably because of the damage.

Send the phone to me and i'll fix it

Ok, thanks for your help!
I did indeed sand the edges until the card itself fit perfectly without any tolerance into the tray.
checked on wikipedia and obviously all the simcards , micro, mini, should be 76mm in thickness (only nano being thinner)...dont know where that slight resistance came from. Funnily though that the new MICRO is from a left and right moving/tolerance perspective (width and height) has some little tolerance i could let it practically fall into the tray. however i think left/right movement should be no problem, more if the card doesnt touch the contacts within the phone at all i guess?

I'm upgrading my GNex to the N4 when it comes in the mail. Never had to cut a SIM before, but looks like I'm about to learn how :laugh:

If I have an LTE plan (I come form a Skyrocket), could I assume this microsim is LTE capable? Just wondering, after reading some people reporting that some HSPA+ APNs work much better, but only when you "have an LTE plan".

True. TMobile will give just about anyone a free SIM. The trouble is getting my account (prepaid) moved from one SIM to the other without them screwing up my $30 / month unlimited data plan. That, and I don't think they offer this service to prepaid customers. Heck, I've never even been to the TMo store...I got the phone direct from Google and activated it with a SIM activation kit online. I thought the easy route would be to just cut the SIM I have. Seems simple enough, but I've never cut my own before. Can anyone recommend a certain brand / model sim cutter (or one to avoid)? Thanks.

I got the Noosy 2nd generation SIM cutter from Amazon for like $9. Easy to cut and fit into the Nexus 4 with no problems.

A microsim card on t-mobile/ATT is only 99 cents more... And free if you are on contract...
Additionally, 6 year old sims are unlikely to support 4G data service, at least not very well. I don't understand why people are confused when they have terrible speeds or a broken sim tray after they spend time cutting their own sim, even buying a cutter when you could just buy a microsim for $9.99. It's common sense. Just get the right part, don't cheap out on a $400 device. T_T
It's really just simple logic. Do you guys really not have $10 to just get a microsim from your carrier? It will work so much better and be so much easier.

Once my N4 arrives, I'll go with that option. As long as I can be assured the microsim AT&T gives me supports the speeds, I'll take it. I think their only official microsim device is the iPhone 5, isn't it? So they should have an LTE-capable microsim card...

iphone 5 uses a nanosim. As long as you get a recent microsim, you should be able to access the network and get HSPA speeds.

I was thinking of doing that but the only sims I have are from dumb tracfones can they be cut down and used with the Nexus 4?

Right! I thought I was wrong on that one, a few minutes after I wrote it... but then again, if it's as you say, I should have no trouble once I request a microsim at AT&T - I have a minisim right now that came with my Skyrocket.

Or you could not do that and spend the same amount of money on a micro Sim as a Sim cutter. Seriously. Its a scam, they sell the Sim cutters for the same price as the Sim card itself, I can't believe people really fall for this.

TMobile switching out Sim for New Nexus 4

I hope that my New Nexus 4 will be here tomorrow. I plan on switching out my Standard SIM to the Micro SIM for the Nexus 4, but I won't have the phone with me yet. Will the TMobile Store need the new phone with them in the store before they could switch out my sim?

Was it a free upgrade to the Micro SIM? There are also rumors that there are two types of SIM cards now: non-ISIS T-Mobile SIM card and a ISIS T-Mobile SIM card. I heard that the ISIS T Mobile SIM card takes support off for Google Wallet.
I just cut my standard SIM to micro.

If you have been a customer with Tmo for awhile, they will give you the new Sim for free. Otherwise, it is a ~$10 charge. No need to take the phone with you, just go to the store and ask for a micro-sim. Then, just activate the sim once you get your phone via the web (website listed on the new card).
I activated my micro-sim online and it was active almost immediately as opposed to when I have called and spoke to a CSR (~ 2 hrs).

One time my SIM card wasn't functioning properly and didn't detect my phone # and all that. I called 611 and they offered a free SIM card replacement but I had to get it from a store. Went to like 4-5 different T-Mobile stores even though the person on the phone said that the store closest to me had them in stock and when I went there the person said that they didn't have any in stock. It was so frustrating getting a replacement that I felt that I was being lied to in my face about them not having SIM cards.
Regardless of that, my SIM card works fine as it is now. Just cutted my standard SIM card (from a few years back) into a micro-sim and works fine on the N4.
$10 is still a rip off for a SIM card, they can't be that much to produce -_-

You can purchase a Micro-SIM off of T-Mobile's site for $0.99 + tax (free shipping). That's what I did and then I just activated it online once my Nexus 4 arrived.

They should be able to cut your existing sim card. They have Sim cutters which will turn it into micro. If you do get a new sim, do not get the Isis ready one. It won't work with Google wallet.

I previously had a normal sized card in Tmob on my Gnex. I usually got H speeds on it. Used an HTC one S (cut the sim) and almost always had H showing on the phone. Today I received my N4, its been perfect but now most of the time its 3G or very low reception. Is it the phone? or can it be the Sim card that I cut?

I would think it might just be damage to the sim card from being cut and then taken in and out of different phones. Just get a micro some from T-Mobile. I called them and only paid 1.04 with tax and it was free over night shipping too. Put the next sim in my N4 and called customer server and they had it running in a matter of minutes.

I cut it with scissors, and it worked fine on a One S. Just to be sure the Tmob store gave me one for free. I still get very low speeds tho.

Nexus 6 Nano SIM Card

Just a heads up to all who are purchasing the Nexus 6. It uses a Nano SIM card. The Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 use Micro SIM cards.
Get in touch with your carrier to have a Nano SIM on hand. I have mine from T-Mobile US ready, and can easily switch my micro SIM to nano SIM on the T-Mo US portal.

Will they have to activate it and thus deactivate the sim card in my Nexus 5 or can I call and have it activated once I'm ready? Come to think of it, is it possible to have both activated at the same time so I can switch between the two devices as necessary (while waiting for a case)?

Unless you get the phone from the carrier your going to have to go to a store and get a new sim, which they might charge you for, and have it activated. You won't be able to have both active with the same line but there are adapters that let you put a nano sim into a phone that uses micro sims.

You can turn the micro SIM into a nano by cutting the plastic around the gold contacts. If you don't trust yourself to do it manually, there are cheap cutting tools online specifically made for it.

Guys phone box comes with Sim card in it.

Thank you guys - I just bought a Nano to Micro adapter on Amazon just in case. I won't take my Nexus 6 to work if I don't have a case for it and the cases may be a little delayed after the phone is released...so I'll want to be able to swap between my Nexus 5 and 6 for the first week or two.

Got at least 30 notifications from pushbullet.. but ordered nothing... and where is the white 64GB!!!!

That's how I created the micro sim for my Nexus 5, from a normal sim. I'll just trim it down further when my Nexus 6 gets here

I just cancelled my order on Amazon after reading that someone was able to walk into AT&T without their phone and request a nano sim. AT&T gave them an adapter as well. Free sounds much better than $6!

Why go to the effort of trimming when you can just walk in and get one or call and order a nano SIM and adapter from your carrier? Do some carriers charge for them?

I needed a nano sim when I got my last phone. I went to the AT&T store before my phone arrived and they wouldn't give me one. They told me it was a new policy and that I had to have my new phone with me. I was so pissed.
I went home and did an online chat with AT&T reps and gave them a sad story and they eventually agreed to ship one out with 2-day shipping.

Takes less time: no need to drive to a store and deal with salesmen.

For t-mobile, sometimes they will charge you and sometimes they won't for getting a new sized sim. You could get those slickdeals for t-mobile sims for 1 cent and activate one of those over the phone. They just need to verify your account and need the sim number.

A phone call is pretty quick, though.
I have a Premier business account with AT&T, maybe that's why it's so much smoother for me than what others are saying.

I always walk into my local AT&T store if I need a different size SIM card no questions asked no charge, done.

Ordered a couple from T-Mobile a few weeks ago. $2.12. For 2 of them. ?

My Att store doesn't care they will give you a Sim no questions asked for free, they guy have me 3 once because I said I wanted to have a spare one.
