[Q] [Help] Partitions seem corrupted - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello again
Yesterday i had an accident with my phone...
i used the ultimate cleaning script flying around here and this formated everything... incliding my system and backups
after long hours of trying around i managed to exptract the system.img image and the userdata.img from the factory image and pushed it to my phone
i could boot again and used a backup lying on my hdd to get back to a working system
today now i was shocked when i wanted to get music on my phone again
i recognized that there are only 5,6 gig of space availabe on my phone :crying:
must havbe something to do with this stupid cleaning script... seems to have repartitioned my phone (i have a 16gig one)
could someone tell me how to get my storage back ?
thanks in advance

Also don't use scripts floating around that will wipe device. A script similar to that was required for the s2 hercules as there were some issues with the recovery not wiping certain partitions. The nexus 4 doesn't have any issues afaik so learn about partitions and wipe them as needed from recovery manually.

All along i keep saying not to use superwipes and stuff like that. There is a recovery for that!!!

I don't know about that. In other ROMs, with the Dalvik on /cache larger apps, e.g. Angry Birds, wouldn't download (not enough space) when the /cache partition was to full.
You could maybe make a swap file on /cache (and an additional swap file on /data) and throw in some of the other useless small partitions. But that's still going to require fastboot.
I like using /cache for /data/dalvik-cache though and I used to get pretty close to filling it. CyanogenMod is sort of nice in that it will actually split the cache between /cache/dalvik-cache and /data/dalvik-cache with /cache/dalvik-cache holding the system apps and /data/dalvik-cache holding the downloaded cache.

I was reading today on reddit that some people divert /cache to the sdcard so that large downloads work. I haven't tried it though.

Hmm.. Dunno about this one as well. but I never had that error, and I usually download the ROMs via my phone.
good luck! then we wont have to partition our sd card for swap anymore! possibly better battery life than swap on sd as less power is needed too!
Before you judge I'm running iceandfire 3.0 overclock at 900 and getting 13,566 to 14,000.
This build is stupid fast.

Like 3rd string mentions, cache size determines the size of an app you can download from the market as the market uses /cache as a repository to download/install apps...at least that's what I've noticed

come on he wasnt saying he did not want to help... cant you read what Hellmonger said carefully? anyway, wouldnt it be good if you could use cache as swap? makes things more complete now that there are already so many good roms for our phone. since we are almost making 2.2 perfect, why not just do a little more, instead of leaving it there and starting to work on 2.3 where theres much more work left to do...
So i think Mz has the right idea..
But do we really have to set it up as swap the whole point ois to get this set up as ram so we dont have to fast boot anymore....

still no luck...
my goal is to stop the whole fastbot thing and use that cache partition as RAM, i already know how to set the download cache directory to SD card
on my ROM it's already implemented...
/cache as Ram.....
We really need to pull our bootloaders and decomplile them to see if there's a way to do the fastboot ourselves. The people that have looked the hardest at the bootloader are on Milestone A853, but according to them they don't have a working "fastboot boot" so that code pathway is missing from their studies.
What we need to find out is what the pathway through the bootloader is that ends up with booting a custom boot.img from RAM (i.e. does fastboot boot go through the entire boot stack or not and if it does how does it convince it to skip the check). In other words I have two mental two models for how fastboot works:
Model 1
Start boot process
Read flags that direct boot to fastboot
Load and execute fastboot bootloader
fastboot reads kernel from USB into memory
fastboot continues boot using the kernel in memory
Model 2
Start boot process
Read flags that direct boot to fastboot
Load and execute fastboot bootloader
fastboot reads kernel from USB into memory
fastboot sets up the phone for boot of the memory-loaded kernel
fastboot restarts boot process
Read flags that direct boot to load and execute the kernel from RAM
So the question is which one is correct? Does fastboot boot continue the current boot process, or does it alter the next boot? That's the big question. If it's model 2, here's an outline for a possible attack:
Attack for Model 2
Normal boot of blessed kernel through sh_hijack.sh
hijack loads a new kernel from the phone into memory
hijack sets up the phone for boot of the memory-loaded kernel
hijack set boot flags for fastboot boot
hijack restarts boot process
Boot memory loaded kernel
So how do we figure out if XT720 uses #1 or #2?
FYI: these are the A853 decompiled bootloaders: https://gitorious.org/droid/reversed (see the asm folder inside the source tree--we need this for XT720 so that we can understand what fastboot boot is doing)
I believe a 2nd had beem complied but it would not boot radio and we don't have a baseband made.

Sprint Cant Activate Service - Needs Kernel or someting - Total Noob

Hey yall,
I recently purchased what I consider to be one of the best phones one the market (Epic 4g) for the second time and this one I bought off of Swappa.com for $100. The phone is in great condition, with ICS which my last Epic didnt have, and it also has cyanogen 9 mod which my old phone didnt have either. I have never modified a phone or rooted them or anything like that. But I like the cyanogen mod so I dont mind it. The phone also has the latest clockwork recovery.
But the phone cannot activate with Sprint because the rep says the numbers have been wiped from the phone. I read somewhere that I may need a certain kernel that mimics the codes or replaces the codes or something?
Can anyone point me to a stable, reliable source for a kernel that will let me activate the phone and keep cyanogen 9 mod?
Sorry if this is just a total f**#$# noob question that makes you want to pull your hair out but I honestly dont know anything about the latest software or anything like that. However I am very resourceful and I got this far, I think I can install a kernel if someone could just point me in the direction of a good file to download.
Thanks in advance!

can you tell me where to find the "temporary gb rom"? Also looks like I need the EL29 EMMC utility, can you tell me where that is as well?
And how to get mobile ODIN on my phone? Do I need mobile ODIN or can I use regular ODIN? In the video he said you could use either one...
Sorry again for the noob questions. This is overwhelming.

We don't have mobile odin. You will need to odin stock and the cwm recovery and nubernel so you can keep the recovery because samsung has it so stock recovery returns after a reboot, and nubecoder fixed that so you'll need his kernel. Then you can reflash cm9. Once the cm team or me include nexus s 4g ril and modem in a build, then we can make updating prl and profile and activating possible. With ours it is impossible.

There is no link inthe OP, there is a link in a quoted reply and while I got that link to work at home and began the download,I cannot begin the download here on my work computer. Is there an updated link anywhere for the stock el30 multiboot for samsung epic? Any clue why the download worked at home but not on my work PC? It might be a firewall or something so I am going to go home and put the file on my thumb drive.

If he already has CM9 then he already has custom recovery (and root, etc) All he needs is the multiboot flashable to temporarily boot into the stock rom. The latest version is FC09 - I'll see if I can link to that thread, but it is in the development section (Epic 4G development)
EDIT: Here is the multiboot thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...te PRL and Calibrate Sensors for CM9 and AOKP
The OP of that thread contains a link to the correct page on the Epic CM team blog, in which you find full instructions, a link and the md5sum (definitely verify the md5 before continuing)
You will need your computer to extract the archive (most android apps for archive files seem to struggle with this one, and while I swear I did it successfully once, I have been unable to duplicate that result or find the app that worked), and it's generally easier to download on the PC as well to avoid a few quirks.

That link is the one in the previous post I mentioned. I got the link to download at my house, my work had it firewalled.
Ok so I got the file, now how do I install it or run it? Just put it on the SD card and then boot in recovery and flash it to everything? Do I need to unzip the files before putting them on the SD card or anything?

Yeah, I just noticed that TazFanatic had already posted it without a description - but the same link from two people is better than no links from anyone, I suppose
That archive needs to be extracted to your sdcard in a very specific directy structure. Check the instruction in the blog where you downloaded the multiboot, but I believe you should be able to extract to the root of the sdcard (with a computer, not your phone - I can't stress that enough) with the option checked to recreate the folder structure.
Once extracted, the actual flashable zip is found in the FC09 folder, which is in the multiboot folder (and may still be EL30, although I have an updated version which I was sure came from that page). Flashing that zip from custom recovery will not actually install anything, but it will reboot the phone after setting it up to boot the rom on the sdcard instead of reading the internal storage where your rom (CM9) is installed.
But as I said, that page should cover all of the details, so be sure to read it thoroughly and you shouldn't have any problems (or additional questions on the subject) from this point forward

Go to the settings screen (menu capacitive key, then "settings" on the touch screen - just in case, I don't know how familiar you are with android or the Epic so I'm just covering the bases, lol)
From there, look for the "storage" sub menu, where you'll be able to see if the phone is detecting the sd card (if you have the card in and it does NOT give you the option to mount or unmount the sd card, then it thinks no card is present)
If the phone is also not detecting the sdcard, then it sounds like the card was corrupted - you may have to reformat it, which will erase everything on it. If it is detected, then maybe rebooting your computer will clear out whatever is preventing it from detecting the card when you put it in the computer... but it sounds like you'll most likely find that the phone isn't even detecting it - try rebooting the phone and checking it again under storage, before you start worrying about reformatting the card...
Also, for everyone else following along - this is why you should not sell a phone with a custom rom on it. Too many problems, better to give the new owner a link to xda and let them decide if they want to take the leap

I thought you said the computer wouldn't read the sd card even if you took it out of the phone and put it into the computer? Hopefully I misunderstood - your wording above seem to suggest a successful usb mount...

Your first question is quite broad, so I highly recommend reading the EpicCM blog site and the official site, cyanogenmod.com, because there are so many features that we will likely forget a few (unless we read the web pages for you, but then you have to trust our summaries... anyone remember the telephone game from childhood? Best to go straight to the source, lol)
That doesn't mean we won't try, of course... but I can't decide on a favorite feature, lol. The theme engine is a well-known feature that is almost a CM exclusive (it originally came from T-Mobile phones). I'm currently on the CM7 side of my usual cycle of roms, so I have to work from memory until I decide to switch back (I stay with 7 most of the time because I can't afford a decent replacement battery, lol)
As for homescreen shortcuts, both apps and widgets can be found in the app drawer - long-press and drag to drop them on the homescreen. There may be a direct dial widget (I haven't messed with direct dial shortcuts since long before CM9, so no guarantees on this part) - dropping it on the homescreen should open a dialogue where you can choose the contact to shortcut to. I know that other widgets that have variables that lack logical default values, like the direct navigation widget, work that way... I'm just not 100% sure if there is a direct-dial, or just a shortcut to the contact info

These links did not help me a lot.
I've seen this post before(not the chinese) and i buyed a 512 MB SD card but it did not work.
The progress bar stoped at 1/4 of it again.
Maybe I made something wrong but I could not download the file from mediafire.
It was something like a programm and I did not understand how to download the file from it.
Perhaps you know what to do?!
Thanks anyway for your help:good:

Follow the instructions inside the folder.
You have to press "Vol. + and -" with Power like 3-4sec. to get the pink screen, your pc will recognize the phone

This is not the problem.
I can easily achieve the pink screen and my pc regonizes him, but if he tries to install the HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES drivers he fails.
So the programm also does not recognize the device.
This is my problem in your instruction.

Well, I can give some instractions but there is a issue. If emmc backup isn't from your specific device then you will lost wifi and IMEI.Because of that you must do as a last chance(...)
As I can understand your phone is in locked bootloader (pink screen) state additionally some file on it crash.
Its better flashing B512 has unlocked bootloader.Don't care if stops after 1 step or not.Just flash it and then go in pink screen. Then connect it On your windows os and copy paste pink screen files from your CWM backups.(unzip boot.fat.tar).
Afterwards pull out battery disconnect USB, reconnect battery and go to cwm (...)

Thank you for your fast reply.
So you think I should do this:
1. Flash B512 (If is stops of not unimportant)
2. Go connect in Pink Screen on Windows
3. Copy the files in the image foldner.
4. Pull out battery
5. Disconnect USB
6. Reconnect battery and go to CWM...
Ok I will try this but there is a little problem. I cant start my device without USB cable because the battery is empty and I cant charge it.

[Q] Sd-ext NOT visible in CWM, how to backup & restore sd-ext?

Hello guys,
I try level best to find the solutions to the problems on my own, but at times like this i have no way other than to bother you.
Here's the problem:
Cannot see the sd-ext partition in the CWM recovery.
Do not get the backup of my sd-ext partition after making backup of the device.
'Restore sd-ext' IS available in 'Advanced Restore' options, but when to use since there's no backup being made.
and so every other problem which may arrive due to this.
Details:
Rom: Jellyblast3.0.4
Kernel: RepencisV7 Final
CWM tried: cwm-madteam-galaxY.zip, CWM_bla_bla.zip, CWMv5-Skin1980-GT-S5360.zip
Everything is in native rfs format
sd-ext is formatted with ext2
Using A2sd by Darktremor
sd-ext IS mounted and working fine(screenshots)
No additional tweaks by me.
Only ten scripts in init.d(attached)
CWM Error Report: ...backing up cache..sd-ext not found..
skipping backup of sd-ext. Creating md5 sum..backup complete. (log attached)
Please let me know..
if any other data/detail is required.
I don't know what's the cause of this problem, though i feel like it might be something related to the kernel.
And also since its Repencis kernel i don't have any clear idea about whom to approach!
And thus made an individual thread for this peculiar problem.
Hopefully, looking forward to find a solution to this problem.

Thankyou sir for your kind interest, but i have used that CWM also.
And talking about kernel sir, i would first prefer to solve this problem then think of opting to 'alternative' solutions.
Because i prefer full a2sd support, i settled with this kernel after testing many.
The only kernel that supports backup of ext is whitesxp kernel
Flash this kernel and the perm cwm included with it will support backup of ext partition although creating a nandriod backup is much slower than with other kernels

Hello marcussmith2626,
I once also tried Merruk kernel and it also used to make the backup of sd-ext when making backup of the device.
In fact. . .its a common thing.
Whenever backups are being made, if sd-ext is present then its backup is automatically made by CWM.
The problem is, in my case its not happening like that.
And about WhiteXP's kernel..
do it support a2sd?
I did try this kernel too. . .but didn't use it for long..since appeared as if it was draining my battery fast.

Use whitexp's kernel and your ext partition should be ext3 . I noticed that Ext3 format is the only format which supported backing up and restoring sd-ext partition successfully. That's my experience . You may like to try.

i have been to every single stinkin forum about this topic, and it seem that you guys know what you are talking about- my phone- galaxy s gt-i9000 or something like that- long story short- battery died. nothing else happened, and now it will not boot back up. I downloaded something named "kies" thinking that would help (looking at a different forum) and it doesnt even recognize that the phone is connected via USB. I just bought this stupid phone from a "friend" 3 months ago, and i really cant afford to get another one.
