So firstly , im not a NOOB with Nexus, i know how to root and all that and i came from the Nexus S, Iv always had it in the back of my mind that i was going to install a custom rom on my N4 and i think nows the time
there are just SOOO many , which is great , but a little advice would really be appreciated , iv been checking out Paranoid Android due to its customisations, and some of the themes on these things look amazing , also i really like the look of the PIE features.
Just wondering if you guys no of any advantages to other roms? or even other roms with the PIE function currently?
Also some advice on some Epic themes would be awesome to
Thanks
Try them for yourself. They're all free, it's not like you go with one rom and you can't go back.

Thats true ,
Same thing goes with kernels.
1. Check out the forum thread like what you see in OP?
2. Read the last couple of pages (skim through it) and read user feedback.
3. Youtube some videos of the kernels or roms (mainly roms.. i dont think people make videos of kernels lol)
... Still like what you see? Flash it! Give it a try. Most people will tell you to flash everything, I say no. Just go through the list and go with what impresses you.
if you are noob you should not try. But by saying that I mean read for couple of days in couple of ROM forums , be little familiar and you should try. Follow the steps and you will be good to go.
By reading few forum you will automatically short list.

Rule #1: don't use a toolkit. read what you're supposed to do and do it. its not difficult
but everyone was a noob at one point. just proceed with caution and make sure you read before you do.

The pie function only comes into play if you plan on using extended desktop (I personally don't like extended desktop). I don't like paranoid android currently because I feel it is missing a lot of features and is far from complete. I love CM10.1 because it feels like the most complete experience. CM10.1 also includes Trebuchet which is my favorite customizable launcher.
Can we expand on this 'pie' feature plse, I'm running PA Rom and don't know about this feature?!

If you are using one of the latest nightlies, enable expanded desktop (through the power menu after holding the power button), and slide up from the bottom of the screen to see the pie. You can customize it through the settings.
If you don't want to flash PA but still want the pie feature, you can flash other ROMs and use LMT launcher.

What is your favorite rom (including plain ol' stock), why, and kernel?
can I use the Gapps I am got for the S3?
also, what other apps / tweaks do you guys recommend?
I never used an Android as a tablet so it's some what of an uncharted waters for me.

Seriously, Custom roms are not worth of it.. or well not yet. I've tried over 6 differents rom and came back to Stock. Stock 4.1.1 has really great performance. The only useful thing I can think of is to flash a different kernel over the stock rom to overclock.

I can read, but at the same time, I created this thread to get other peoples opinion in one place rather than going all over the place. and as for above, I was looking at PA too.
Can I use Gapps (7.27 i think) I am using for the S3 or does the Nexus 7 have it's own different Gapps?
So i've hesitated on rooting for a while now, but i finally did today. Now i'm looking for some good roms to flash, and i notice that a lot of N7 owners use PA. I want to know why? I tried CM10 and its pretty cool
Eh. I didn't like it. I had to RMA my tablet because the touchscreen was bein' cray.
But the interface of the rom? 10 points. Amazing. So fluent... it is a hybrid ROM that let's you use the tablet in tablet ui. And switch between stock, tablet, and phablet. I loved it.
Tldr;I hated it. I loved it.

The best thing to do is read the op for the pa rom and note the features it lists. All roms have their features listed to help you decide. Also, read other users comments within the thread to see what they are saying. It is all there waiting for you to read.
And for future reference, questions belong in the Q&A sub forum, not general.

I agree. PA has never felt as stable for me as CM. And I find that I prefer my tablet in portrait mode now, so I don't care about hybrid apps (plus the mail ones like email work proudly now)

I just tried it out and it was really unstable for something I would use everyday. I use SmoothROM and it is really stable. I put tablet UI and its perfect for my preference. It's all up on what people really want from their Nexus I guess.

Gotta disagree, as mods have gone on record stating that something such a that is outside of the scope of the Dev forum and against the rules. Replies in those threads are supposed to be limited to those relevant to development of the rom, such as bug reports. Asking a question of this nature in a Dev thread is only going to make it harder for folks to find relevant info in the thread.

I've been running PA on my N7 for a while now. Had 2.54 (the last 'stable' release) on my old 16GB and it was great. When I broke that one I got the 32GB and the first thing I flashed was PA 2.99 beta. Now running the 14-01-2013 beta build and for me its flawless. I love tablet UI and the ability to change the layout of individual apps and to set DPI to 160. PA Colours let's you choose custom colours for Nav bar, buttons etc. Its smooth and stable. Its like another device entirely. I even bought their Preferences Pro app to support the project and I'm eagerly awaiting P.A. 3
Combined with M-Kernel a30 and Trickster Mod I'm running at 1.9Ghz Max CPU and 600mhz GPU.
Its beastly. NFS:MW flies! Lol

c'mon dude. why the hate. miui is probably the only rom that google considers when they look for inspiration. and that says something. i havent noticed they're looking here. in some parts 4.2 is basically a holo version of miui. i am really, really impressed from what i've seen. it may not be my style (holo fanboy), but they do bring fresh ideas and creativity to the table.

especially miui v5 looks very interesting and awesome
The reason I ask is my wife and some of my customers love their iPhone. Hate the android lock screen and no notifications on lock, the fact that they would have to setup addons to receive notifications on phone, voice, and SMS, etc. After trying to help my wife move over from her iPhone to a new nexus 4, little things like this made her want her iPhone back. I used miui for awhile back on my my touch and it has all of these stock. I think its a great addition to the Eco system and would be an easier move to for iPhone users. Thoughts?

I started missing those cool features such as the custom dpi, the pie and most of all Halo! I know there is

You guys should definitivly give it a try when it's released. It's simply amazing!

Despise and have no use for Halo personally, but I loved PA on my N4. PIE was the best thing ever, only thing that made my N4 tolerable.

But I prefer AOSP ROM's just due to simple things like Halo or even just the stock messaging app and stuff.

I like Sense 5, but the one thing that stops me from using it is that it doesn't support landscape on the desktop. Super aggrivating. The apps that will allow you to force landscape aren't good at all for Sense either.

Most popular seem to be FireNote and dynamic kk. FireNote seems to be a bit more stable with great speed and battery life. I have been averaging about 1 day 8 hrs with 6-7 hrs of screen on time. Dynamic brings the latest and greatest kit kat as well as some customization. It has some bugs but the developer has been great about updating and fixing bugs very quickly!

If you like KK rom, dynamic is the best one out right now but there are a bunch of other great devs are pushing new one that are great as well.

I'm in the same boat as the OP and others here. But I went back to stock. Reason is because I got the new Gear 2 watch and saw many ROMs weren't working as well because they had features stripped from it such as Samsung Apps.
